Like the Israelites who returned from exile, we are experiencing a full range of emotions as we are living through the trauma of a global pandemic. This four-week adult education series, taught by Pastor Jenny, will explore loss, emerging from the pandemic, and learning how to build up tolerance and resilience for ambiguity. Each class will provide practical exercises for coping with change as we draw from Ignatian Spiritual Exercises reflecting on where we’ve been, where we are now, and where we might go from here.

MUSIC WELCOME BACK! Children and Youth Music Ministries will resume on Wednesday, August 25. We are excited to resume making music together and learning in a safe community.

The Redeemer Ringers is a beginning handbell choir. The children learn basic music reading skills and handbell techniques.

The Joyful Rhythm Ringers is our youth handbell choir, enjoying each other and furthering their skills as they prepare music for worship.

Outdoor Brass Concert The Redeemer Concert Series opens its 2021-22 season on Sunday, September 19 at 2:00 PM with the glorious sounds of a brass quintet on the Redeemer green. The Atlanta Brassworks will kick off the season with a concert of great American music, celebrating legends from Stephen Foster to Leonard Bernstein.

The members of the Atlanta Brassworks are professional musicians with principal positions in the Atlanta Ballet and Opera Orchestras , as well as teaching posts at various local colleges and universities.

Bring your own lawn or camp chair, or use one of the folding chairs the ushers will have available.

In case of bad weather, the rain date is scheduled for October 3. The concert is free, but donations to the “Friends of Music” will be accepted. Please join us as we celebrate the gift that music is to our community.

"We are so excited for the 2021-2022 Sunday School year! We are looking forward to connecting with God and each other while still keeping everyone safe and responding to current conditions. Sunday School is a great way to fulfill the promises you made in baptism and one of the ways our congregation fulfills the baptismal promises we make as a community. This fall, Sunday School will vary between both in-person (outdoor) and online (Zoom) formats. We look forward to your presence in our community whether it is on a screen or faceto-face!

First Day of Sunday School is September 12th!

Join us in person, outdoors at Redeemer on September 12 from 10:15-10:45 for an in-person Sing and Play with a blessing of our Sunday School bags! You can take your bag home that day, but if you do not attend we will bring the bag to you later in the week.

Sunday School will have two formats in the fall semester: Outdoor, in-person Sing and Play days as a multi-age group. We aim to have these at least once per month.

A Zoom format, A Zoom format, typically in classrooms according to age groups.

Fall classes will be one of these formats as indicated on the schedule opposite. Please note that if pandemic conditions change, we will change our format according to the recommendations of the Church Council and Covid Task Force. Thank you for your flexibility and patience. If conditions allow for us to resume fully in-person, we will also continue to offer a virtual option.

Complete a new registration for the current year for each student. For the 21-22 school year, advance registration is required for all participants whether we are meeting digitally or in person. All registration will be online. You can find the form at this link.

Sunday School is from 10:15-10:45 in either format. Please be present to provide your child the support needed for participation.

Online: Some kids will need a parent present the whole time, some can participate well on their own. You know your child's needs.

In person: please plan to stay with your child or nearby as we get used to this new format.

Children with Special Needs are warmly welcomed in our Sunday School classes. Please speak to Deacon Mary about how we can create the best possible experience for your child.

Please don't hesitate to bring questions and ideas regarding Sunday School to us. We are looking forward to a great year as we join the whole congregation in exploring our fall theme: Growing Faithfully, Serving Boldly!

High School Sunday School High School Sunday School meets on Sundays from 10:00-11:00 am. Come catch up and discuss what is going on in our lives with other High School Youth! We study the Faith Lens curriculum too. We will not be meeting on Sunday, September 5. We will be officially starting back on Sunday, September 12. This will be available as a hybrid.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT REVISITED

by Jeanne P. Merritt IN THE BEGINNING In January 1986 Redeemer sponsored a Czech family, Jana, Milan, and 5-year old Veronika, who had escaped their Communist homeland. After spending some time in a refugee camp in Italy, they made their way to Atlanta under the auspices of the World Council of Churches (WCC). There was no Inspiritus or Lutheran Services of Georgia then. Forty members of Redeemer led by Virginia Godfrey volunteered to help. Some made monetary contributions while others searched for an apartment, secured house furnishings, and sought job opportunities. Peg Wyse and I coordinated day-to-day activities—arranging rides to the social security office, health department, job interviews, MARTA bus and train tour, etc. Everything they needed seemed to miraculously appear at the appropriate time.

SETTLING IN Milan, who spoke perfect English, as well as a number of other languages, was hired by the Ritz Carlton to work in-room service. He later left the Ritz to work for Delta Air Lines, where his linguistic skills were of great value. Jana, who spoke no English, was able to take language lessons from Berlitz, thanks to a grant from a local foundation, secured by a Redeemer member. What a gift! Piedmont Hospital ultimately hired her as a nursing assistant. The Board of Nursing would not meet with her without nursing credentials which the Czech government refused to supply. So, Dorothy Beasley cut through the red tape and secured for her an audience with the Board who allowed her to take the nursing boards after taking a course in psychiatry! She passed the course and the boards and was immediately elevated to registered nurse status.

FAST FORWARD Five years after their arrival, they had a son, Michael. By this time Peg Wyse, her family, and I had developed a close relationship with the Polaceks. Each Christmas season we would have a holiday celebration together and relive their early days here. Michael, who had experienced none of it, learned from the retelling of the whole story, ours and theirs.

REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT REVISITED THE REST OF THE STORY Milan is now retired from Delta and Jana retired from Piedmont, Fayetteville this year; they live in Peachtree City. Veronika and her husband, Britt are happily married with three children. Michael and his wife, Erin are expecting a little girl and her name will be Norah. A month ago, Peg and I went to a baby shower for her and after the shower, we gathered with the family for a cook-out at Milan and Jana’s home. As we sat around the pool visiting, Michael announced that Norah’s middle name would be Jeanne! I was stunned, overwhelmed, and deeply honored. This family has been an enormous blessing in my life. I am reminded of the scripture from Hebrews 13:12 “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” If you are looking for a great experience, I highly recommend helping refugees find a new life.

Wellspring Living Celebrates 20 Years!

Founded in 2001, Wellspring Living provides domestic sex trafficking victims and those at risk with specialized recovery services through residential and community-based programs.

In 2020, Wellspring Living served over 330 participants! Created in 2011, Redeeming Grace of Redeemer celebrates 10 years of supporting Wellspring Living in its Girls Residential Program.

REDEEMER QUILTERS

The Redeemer Quilters have been making quilts that touch lives all over the world for more than 30 years. Annually the quilters produce approximately 300 quilts that serve a tangible function as a covering, a bed, a wall, or a roof and also serve as a tangible symbol of caring, giving, sharing, and loving, Recently, the quilters returned to the familiarity of the Fireside Room to continue their important work and invite new participants to join this outreach ministry.

The sole requirement is an eagerness to help others and to enjoy fellowship. All are welcome all the time!

Facility Reservation Request Did you know Redeemer has over 60,000 square feet (under roof)? Within this space, we have over 30 dedicated rooms and spaces for your ministry team to meet. As you know, our meeting rooms are used by our ministry teams and community groups on a regular basis.

As you can imagine, the scheduling of over 30 meeting spaces require all of us to plan…in advance of our meetings, events or activities. To ensure we are prepared for our ministry teams’ meetings, we have implemented a new online Facility Reservation Form. The form is similar to our previous paper versions, but it allows you to upload diagrams, additional instructions or pictures.

Now is the time to prepare for an infusion of new leadership on the Redeemer Congregation Council. As a member, it is your privilege and responsibility to help select the five new Council members to replace those who will complete their three-year terms in December.

The retiring Council members form the heart of a nominating committee that will assemble a slate of ten (10) qualified candidates from nominations submitted by the congregation according to the requirements of CR12.02c of Redeemer’s Continuing Resolutions.

Every Church Council election is important, but 2022’s election will be critical to Redeemer’s future. The 2022 Council will guide Redeemer through the post COVID restrictions, continued implementation of the Strategic Plan, and discuss the future of our facilities including the adjoining 4th Street parking lot.
