Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 24, Issue 7 | 15th March 2024

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

This week has been another hectic but eventful week for our students. There is so much going on at the moment with opportunities for extension and enrichment in so many diverse fields that I am thrilled for the students who put themselves out there and get involved in the life of the school.

Last weekend, thirty-three Year 9 and 10 music students braved the scorching inferno known as the Adelaide summer to attend WOMADelaide World Music Festival. Despite temperatures soaring past 40 degrees daily, our brave students danced through the heatwaves enthusiastically, ensuring they saw as much variety of cultural music at this unique event. In between the festival time, our adventurous crew found time to relax at the hotel pool, learned to salsa at QuickSteps Dance, and sampled different cuisines from many of the food trucks around the Botanic Gardens in between music acts. As our sunkissed troupe returned home, they brought memories of laughter, friendship, and a newfound appreciation for the power of music to unite us all. Congratulations to the students who showed resilience and fortitude in the oppressive heat, determined to make the best of the situation, and hats off to our brave teachers who orchestrated this unforgettable adventure.

Alex Marucci of the Year 12 Judiciary wrote the following about the UN State Conference, which took place last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Attendees were Alex Marucci, Robbie Kaplan, Otto Torazzi, Ben Simon, Milana Perczuk, Paloma Nicholas, Georgie Davis, Hugo Bendeich, Maya Hatzvi, and Nevin Hemachandra.

“Last weekend, a group of Reddam Students and I attended the UN Youth 2024 NSW State Conference, where we engaged in workshops, speaker panels, and committee debates to discuss young people's power in shaping the future. Throughout the state conference weekend, we learned about young people, the media, and governments' roles in modern democracy. We also tested our diplomatic skills with the IPS (crisis management activity) and the model UN debates. This year’s State Conference theme was ‘The Future of Your Democracy in the 21st Century’. Throughout the weekend, we discussed whether our current climate invites democracy and the power of technology in shaping our future. As a Delegate of the United States of America, I loved the model UN scenarios and enjoyed arguing and debating with almost everyone. My weekend was fun, challenging, and unique, and I speak for the other Reddam Students when I say I can't wait to return next year.”

Last Friday, in an exhilarating Round 2 of this year's Eastside Debate Competition, our teams went headto-head with Sydney Girls High School, known for being one of the most formidable opponents on the circuit. The challenges were steep, but our debaters rose spectacularly to the occasion, securing victories in four out of six debates in Years 7,8,10, and 11 a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about our students' skill, dedication, and passion. Congratulations to all our debaters for their outstanding performance. Your hard work and dedication are truly making a difference. Let's keep this momentum going.

On Tuesday, the Year 7, 8, and 9 students attended the first seminar day of 2024, and speaking to the teachers who organised and supervised these events, the students could not have behaved better and appreciated the out-of-class learning experience.

Year 7 students participated in a field trip to Watsons Bay. They observed and assessed the features and characteristics of the Sydney Harbour coastal landscape and examined its landforms. While discussing the management and protection of environments for their sustainability, students examined various land degradation issues and environmental hazards. They also actively interpreted graphs and maps.

Year 8 students participated in a cultural awareness and integration program at the Sydney Jewish Museum Education Centre. This excursion facilitated a broader understanding of multiculturalism within Australia. I have heard from facilitators at the Museum, and our teachers present said that the day was a great success, primarily due to the engagement of our students. I thank them.

The Year 9 Geographers students immersed themselves in the history of the Gadigal people of the Sydney Basin. They explored the area's evolution post-colonization, discovering the original shoreline and examining indigenous artifacts such as boomerangs, woomeras, animal skins, and clapsticks. Led by program leader Jarmarni Tompkins, students were awed by her mastery of the clapsticks, which deepened their connection to Gadigal culture. Additionally, they learned about cultural traditions, settlers' use of shell middens in construction, and local bush tucker, including plant identification for water and sugars and weaving techniques with grasses. The day was both enlightening and enjoyable, with the program leader expressing appreciation for the students' enthusiasm and engagement.

The Year 9 Historians, as part of their unit on Australia’s Involvement in World War One, students attended the ANZAC memorial and seminar to learn about the Light Horsemen in WWI. In this inspiring and moving seminar, students explored the role of the Australian Light Horse to learn more about our First World War history through the unbreakable bond between man and horse. Students discovered the compelling Australian war horse story – the battles fought, won, and lost that helped forge our national identity and gave birth to a legend. The seminar included a live theatrical performance of Loyal Creatures, written by Morris Gleitzman, a remarkable piece of historical fiction. Students also participated in a guided discovery tour of the Anzac Memorial and their new exhibition spaces. With the knowledge gained from the tour, students then utilised perspective and fictional writing techniques to create their short piece of historical fiction in response to the performance earlier in the workshop.

On Wednesday, we had the monthly Bondi Sound Sessions on the senior campus at lunchtime. Twenty performers and eight different bands and solo items were on show this week, and we packed as much music as possible into a single lunchtime. It's great to see so many students keen to get up and show off songs they've been learning on their own or with a group of mates. The next Session is Week 2 of Term 2 (Wednesday, 8th May), and students can sign up using the QR code on the music department noticeboard or displayed each week in the newsletter.

On Wednesday afternoon, Prefects from the surrounding schools were invited to a social gathering held on the rooftop at Woollahra. It was a fantastic afternoon of fun trivia led by Mr Francis, connecting over common issues and culminating in dinner to enjoy the sunset. Many friendships were formed, and the Reddam Senior Executive proudly celebrated their school with visitors.

Also on Wednesday, over 40 Drama Students from Years 9, 10, 11, and 12 were treated to an outstanding production of 'Holding the Man' directed by Eamon Flack at Belvoir Street Theatre on Tuesday night. The performance was a hilariously funny and deeply moving love story. All enjoyed the first Theatre Club excursion for the year. Congratulations to Mateo Lopez-Fisher on winning the Bronze Medal in the High Jump at the NSW Athletics Championships last weekend. Mateo has qualified to compete at the National Championships in Adelaide. Great job, Mateo.

Tomi Reynaldo ran at the NSW Junior Athletics Championships this past weekend and won a Bronze medal in the 400-metre hurdles. He'll head to Adelaide next month to compete in the Australian Junior Track & Field Championships. We wish him well.

This week, the Reddam Swim Team competed at the CDSSA Swimming Championships. All your swimmers gave their races everything they had, with the following students achieving 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in an event. These students will represent CDSSA at the coming AICES Swimming Championships.

Last weekend, some of our students represented their Surf Life Saving Clubs at the NSW Nippers Surf Life Saving Championships held at Queenscliff Beach.

Mimi Tolnay - Silver Medal, Mixed Beach Relay. Mimi also competed in the Senior NSW Athletics Championships and achieved 4th place in the Under 15 Girls high jump.

Nicholas Fasol - Gold Ocean Team Swim, 8th in the Individual Ocean Swim

Special mention must go to Krishna Inder. Krishna has one of the most impressive records ever for a Nipper competing on the sand. He has been the NSW Beach Flags Champion for the past four years. This year, he won the bronze medal in a gruelling final at this event. Along with his flags medal, he also won silver in the beach sprint, gold in the all-age relay, gold in the mixed relay, and silver in the boys' relay.

Tia Hinds of the HSC Class of 2020 has been playing for the Aussie Sevens women's team since making the team for the Olympics in Japan. We continue to follow her progress with much pride.

HSC 2024 music performance rehearsals are well underway! This week the spotlight is on Sophie Marcolina (HSC Music 1), who has been rehearsing her small ensembles HSC item with professional Australian opera star Rebecca Currier. Rebecca's long list of professional engagements include Second Lady, The Magic Flute; Mariette and Lolette, La Rondine; Madchen, The Arms and the Cow, the Lady in Waiting, Macbeth; Tzeitel, Fiddler on the Roof, and the list goes on! We are lucky enough to have the very talented Ms Currier on staff teaching voice, and we are excited to hear this beautiful duet. Thanks also go out to the talented Mr Burton for his support as always!

Reddam House students once again entranced Westfield shoppers with musical delights during a lunchtime set on Monday afternoon. Friends and family gathered with the enraptured public to enjoy some jazz, pop, musical theatre and even a spine tingling Serbian folk song! About the What Matters? Writing Competition 2024

Inspired by Gough Whitlam's commitment to involving young people in shaping Australia's future, the What Matters? writing competition is currently open to school students in years 5 to 12 from Australia. Responding to the simple question 'What matters?', entrants are free to express their views on any matter they care about.

Part writing exercise, part civics and citizenship activity, What Matters? is the perfect opportunity to empower students to raise their voices on issues that are important to them and know that their perspectives are valuable, no matter their age, background or viewpoint. Entries can be fiction, nonfiction, poetry or prose of up to 600 words, and submitted online.

Following on from its inaugural History Tour in 2019 to Russia, Germany and Italy, and the enormously successful April 2023 tour to Germany, Italy and Türkiye, the Reddam House History Department is launching The History Tour France, Germany and Italy for April 2025.

The tour is in the 3-week holiday period after Term 1 2025.

We are hosting a Parent Student Information Evening at the Bondi Campus, on Wednesday 6th March at 6.45.

The itineraries are closely aligned with the senior Modern and Ancient syllabuses; however, it is not a requirement that participating students study History. All students are welcome.

The HSC and Careers Expo 2024 is back in 2024, celebrating 16 years of delivering post-HSC career and study information to students, teachers and parents in New South Wales! With over 12,000 attendees expected, the Expo will be held over three days – Thursday 30 May, Friday 31 May and Saturday 1 June, 9am-3pm at The Winx Stand, Royal Randwick Racecourse. This year, the Expo will host over 100 exhibitors and include seminars on a wide variety of topics, covering:

Applications for 2025 entry open on 3 April for domestic students and 17 April for international students. UAC will email UAC PINs to all NSW HSC and ACT BSSS students on 3 April. Students will need their NESA or BSSS student number and their UAC PIN to apply through UAC.

Interstate and IB students should wait until 1 August to apply as UAC won't receive their student data until later in the year. I'll let you know if this changes.

Access schemes

When applications for admission open, so will applications for the Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) and the Educational Access Scheme (EAS). This year there are a few changes.

SRS application changes

The SRS application is now part of the undergraduate application, similar to EAS. Once a student submits their undergraduate application, they can follow a link to SRS: there will no longer be a standalone application accessible from the UAC website.

Students will be asked to confirm that their school name is correct. If a student needs to upload their Year 11 results, they will be prompted to do so.

EAS process change for schools

This year we will not accept emailed educational impact statements (EIS). However, if you cannot give the EIS to the student to upload to their EAS application, you will be able to upload it through the School Access portal (where you now complete SRS ratings). More details will come soon.

In 2023, an increased number of applicants provided EIS from people not considered ‘responsible persons’ (eg parents, other relatives, gardeners, cleaners). This year we will add the definition of a responsible person to each document package.

EIS must be completed by the school principal, counsellor, year adviser, teacher or careers adviser. If this is not possible it must be completed by a responsible person, such as a doctor, lawyer, social worker, counsellor, or community or religious leader who has knowledge of the circumstances and the effect on the student's studies.

Finally, a reminder that EAS is only used for ATAR-based offers unless otherwise specified.

UAC publications

Another reminder: as advised in my April 2023 email, UAC is no longer producing the UAC Guide. All information about the next admissions cycle will be updated on the UAC website from April.

If students would like a printed information booklet, they can pick up a copy of Steps to Uni for Year 11 and 12 Students from one of the many expos we'll be attending this year. If you are from an interstate school, we'll be bringing Applying to NSW and ACT Universities with us to the VCE and Careers Expo in Melbourne, TSXPO in Brisbane and the TIS roadshow in Tasmania.

Steps to Uni for Year 11 and 12 Students will not be sent out to schools but it can be downloaded from the UAC website if needed.

Steps to Uni for Year 10 Students will still be printed and one copy for each Year 10 student will be sent to all NSW schools in early Term 2, as usual.

Online Medicine Information Night – 20 March

A reminder that Charles Sturt University is running an online Medicine Information Night at 6:00pm this Wednesday, 20th March 2024.

We'll start with an overview of the course, our facilities, entry requirements, and how to apply.

Those who attend will get information on clinical placements, career opportunities, support services, scholarships and more.

We will also cover information about the University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand (UCAT ANZ) and hear about the experiences of rural and regional doctors.

Charles Sturt University offers the Joint Program in Medicine in partnership with Sydney University. The two-year program runs on our Orange campus in regional New South Wales and is followed by three years of regional placements.

Those who wish to attend can book here. Charles Sturt Advantage (CSA) early entry program 2024/25 Following the release of the Universities Accord: Early Entry Findings we are now able to provide an update on the Charles Sturt Advantage (CSA) early entry program details for 2024/25.

This year the CSA program details will be as follows:

• Applications will open on the 1 May and remain open until the 31 August.

• There will be one offer round and offers will be sent in late September.

• There will be two types of offers released - students will either receive a firm offer or a conditional offer.

• A firm offer means a student must complete year 12 without the ATAR requirement. This will be the vast majority of the offers students receive.

• A conditional offer means you must meet the minimum ATAR requirements before receiving a confirmed place in the selected course. Offers will have the conditions clearly outline in the offer email.

• Application requirements remain unchanged, the program will consider the students year 11 results and answers to three x 150-word questions, with examples included in their responses demonstrating their soft skills.

Applications open for the Hansen Scholarship Program, 2025 entry

The Hansen Scholarship Program aspires to nurture and significantly expand the horizons of Australian students who may otherwise struggle to access a high-quality university education through fully funded accommodation at Little Hall, tailored mentoring and extracurricular activities, and focused financial support.

Current Year 12 students across Australia who plan to begin their undergraduate degree at UniMelb in Semester 1, 2025 are encouraged to review the eligibility and selection criteria and start on their application. Those who apply before 3 March 2024 will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their application and resubmit by the closing date of 3 April 2024.

December and January offer round 1 outcomes

We're thrilled to share that we've offered 2,328 domestic undergraduate students a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) in the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) January offer round 1. We also offered 5,953 places in the December offer round, an increase of 956 offers on the same time last year.

The December offer round includes 1,103 offers to our inaugural Narrm Scholarship candidates, while 42 per cent of our overall domestic December round offers went to applicants eligible for Access Melbourne, our Special Entry Access Scheme.

In December, we awarded Victoria’s highest-achieving VCE students with a Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship to study with us in 2024.

The Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship is one of our most prestigious awards for school leavers, offering a generous fee exemption, as well as a guaranteed CSP in their preferred graduate program, including the Doctor of Medicine and Juris Doctor (Law).

The Scholarship is offered to school-leaver applicants who have satisfied prerequisites (and any extra requirements) and achieved an ATAR or equivalent of 99.9 or above, with concessions for Bachelor of Music applicants and Indigenous students.View article

As one of the nation's longest running and most highly regarded precollege academic programs, it gives motivated students the chance to

• Get a head start on their college journey while earning 3 to 12 credits

• Build college study skills during engaging Ivy League classes

• Prep for college applications with one-on-one admissions counseling

• Enhance their college applications with an impressive Cornell transcript

• Have fun connecting with diverse students from around the world

Students choose from dozens of three- and six-week online undergraduate Cornell courses in Arts and Architecture, Business and Hotel Management, Health and Humanities, International Relations, Psychology, Science and Technology, Sustainability, Veterinary Medicine, and more! More courses will be added in the coming months.

Courses are offered between June 3 and August 6, 2024. Limited financial aid is available.
