SUPPLIERS GUIDE CONTENTS

WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL IBMS SUPPLIERS GUIDE

IBMS Chief Executive David Wells on bridging the gap between diagnostic needs and supplier expertise.

At the IBMS we recognise the critical role suppliers play in empowering our members to provide the highest standards of patient care. This guide connects you with the trusted partners, innovative products and expert services your laboratories need to excel.

The healthcare landscape evolves rapidly, with laboratories facing increasing demands to enhance efficiency, maintain quality and adopt new technologies. Access to the right tools, expertise and support is essential to meet these challenges. The Biomedical Scientist Suppliers Guide makes those connections easier, providing a comprehensive directory of suppliers committed to supporting your work.

The IBMS’ commitment to fostering collaboration goes beyond providing a list of suppliers. We create an environment where productive partnerships flourish – where members find solutions to enhance services, streamline processes and improve patient outcomes. Suppliers gain opportunities to showcase innovations and demonstrate how their offerings support the critical work in laboratories across the UK.

Our collaborative white papers with industry partners, such as Hologic, BD, Abbott and AstraZeneca, are reinforcing the importance of these relationships. These

publications address crucial topics from earlier diagnostics and digital cytology to community diagnostics and cancer testing, driving progress across the sector. These efforts highlight the necessity of collaboration between suppliers and laboratory professionals to build a resilient, futureready healthcare system.

As we look ahead to IBMS Congress, this guide takes on additional significance. The Congress exhibition hall offers premier opportunities for direct engagement between members and suppliers, showcasing the latest diagnostic innovations. Connections established through this guide can lead to meaningful collaborations at Congress and beyond.

The Biomedical Scientist Suppliers Guide is your essential connection to those dedicated to advancing diagnostics. I encourage you to explore profiles, reach out to potential partners and seize new opportunities. Every connection contributes to a stronger, more efficient diagnostics sector that delivers better care for patients. Together, we can push the boundaries of what’s possible and ensure the best outcomes for laboratories and patients alike. BS

40% increase

It estimated that, with a growing and ageing population, the projected increase in the number of cancer cases would be more than 40% above current levels.

514,000 cases

The projected increase would lead to a total of about 514,000 new cases per year in 2035.

INTRODUCING THE COMPANY MEMBERS

Who are the Company Members and what is the aim of the scheme? We give an outline of their role and responsibilities.

During 1992, the Institute of Biomedical Science launched the Company Membership scheme and the Company Members Liaison Group, which comprised Company Members and Institute Officers.

The latter held its first meeting in April 1992, which provided an excellent forum to both discuss issues at the Liverpool Triennial and work with exhibitors to transform the event.

Fast-forward to the present and the scheme connects a members’ network of over 20,000 biomedical staff worldwide to many of the leading organisations in biomedical science, covering disciplines across the sector.

Delivering success

One of the central aims for the scheme is to ensure that members are up to date with the latest developments in technology and advances in scientific techniques.

Working with the Company Members also enables the delivery of the highly successful annual Congress, while the companies also support local IBMS regional and branch scientific events and recognise members’ achievements through the award of the Company Members Prize, which is presented to the IBMS member who achieves the highest mark in each specialist subject of the Higher Specialist Diploma examination.

Essential for the future

The IBMS Company Members Committee (see box) works closely with IBMS committees and staff to help organise Congress and strengthen links between biomedical science companies and IBMS members.

Mark Reed, IBMS Company Members Committee Chairman, says: “Open-forum communication between all aspects of the industry, trade association, professional body and working parties is essential for the future of all in this continually changing and challenging business. The partnership between the IBMS and its Company Members continues to be extremely important.” BS

WHAT IS THE 10 YEAR HEALTH PLAN?

What does the next decade of healthcare in the NHS look like? We review the new plans for England and ask what is happening in the devolved countries.

The 10 Year Health Plan for England was launched in July 2025 and focuses on the opportunities provided by new technologies, medicines and innovations to deliver better care for all patients and better value for taxpayers.

The plan is centred around three main transitions in the NHS:

From hospital to community: more care will be available on people’s doorsteps and in their homes.

From analogue to digital: new technology is hoped to liberate staff from admin and

allow people to manage their care as easily as they bank or shop online.

From sickness to prevention: the health service hopes to reach patients earlier and make the healthy choice the easy choice.

The IBMS response

Writing in The Biomedical Scientist magazine, IBMS Chief Executive David Wells welcomed the plan.

“The plan proposes a shift from hospitalbased care to neighbourhood services and more integrated, preventative models. This is welcome. If we can deliver care earlier and closer to where people live, we can reduce

the burden on acute services and improve outcomes. But that system only functions if it is underpinned by timely, accurate and accessible diagnostics - delivered by a skilled and regulated workforce.

“The government’s focus on digital transformation reinforces that point. Biomedical scientists are already driving innovation in AI, data integration and genomics. These technologies can support earlier intervention and better decisionmaking – but only if they’re implemented safely and effectively. The plan promises fully AI-enabled hospitals, expanded access to genomics and digital tools as standard. Our profession will be central to ensuring these tools are clinically useful, quality assured and equitable in practice.”

The devolved nations

The 10 Year Plan focuses on England and does not directly apply to Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, as health and social care are devolved matters and each devolved nation has its own administrations and respective plans for their healthcare systems.

However, the devolved nations are all currently looking to change the way their health services are run.

The Scottish government has outlined an Operational Improvement Plan, a population health framework, and a health and social care service renewal framework and aims to address long waits, reduce health inequalities and improve population health outcomes using digital technology and a cross-sector approach.

NHS Wales is undergoing a transformation that is focused on building a future-fit health service. e key priorities include reducing waiting times, training

more staff, investing in new equipment and moving care closer to home.

A three-year strategic plan for health and social care has been published by the government in Northern Ireland. The plan involves a wide range of initiatives based on three central themes – stabilisation, reform and delivery.

Science and technology

Science and technology are a key element of the 10 Year Health Plan for England. The executive summary says the NHS of the future will be a service that offers instant access to help and appointments; one that predicts and prevents ill health, rather than simply diagnosing and treating it; a patient-controlled system, in place of today’s centralised bureaucracy - and one where frontline staff are empowered to reshape services. It continues to say that the service will have the core principles and values of the NHS but with the know-how of a wider network of technology, life sciences, local government, civil society and third-sector organisations, working in partnership to improve the nation’s health.

AI and genomics

Despite the scale of the challenge faced, the plan says there are more reasons for

optimism than pessimism. It says the NHS is the best placed system in the world to harness the advances we are seeing in AI and genomic science.

The plan describes how the government will use these advantages to propel the NHS into a position of global leadership. When coupled with our country’s excellence in science, innovation and academia, the UK can lead the world in developing the treatments and technologies of the future, it is claimed – this plan will put the NHS at the front of the global genomics revolution and make the NHS the most AI-enabled care system in the world.

Neighbourhood health service

Also in the plans is the “neighbourhood health service”, the idea of which is to bring care into local communities and convene professionals into patient-centred teams. The government says the Neighbourhood Health Service will embody a new preventative principle that care should happen: as locally as it can digitally by default in a patient’s home if possible in a neighbourhood health centre (NHC) when needed in a hospital if necessary. There are a number of ways that the

“A core ambition of our 10 Year Plan will be to provide first-class healthcare for everyone”

government plans to drive this change, including: proportionally greater investment in out-of-hospital care; training thousands more GPs and building online advice into the NHS App; establishing an NHC in every community, beginning with places where healthy life expectancy is lowest; expand same-day emergency care services and co-located urgent treatment centres; free up hospitals to prioritise safe deployment of AI and harness new technology to bring the very best of cutting-edge care to all patients.

What the government says

Launching the plan, Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting, said: “The truth is, those in greatest need often receive the worst quality healthcare. It flies in the face of the values the NHS was founded on. The circumstances of your birth shouldn’t determine your worth. A core ambition of our 10 Year Plan will be to restore the promise of the NHS, to provide first=class healthcare for everyone in our country and end the postcode lottery.

“Last year we sent crack teams of top clinicians to hospitals in parts of the country with the highest waiting lists and levels of economic inactivity. It has seen waiting lists in those areas falling twice as fast as the rest of the country, helping get sick Brits back to health and back to work.

“Thanks to the reforms we’ve made to bear down on wasteful spending, we can now invest the savings in working-class communities that need it most. Where towns have the greatest health needs and the fewest GPs, we will prioritise investment to rebuild your NHS and rebuild the health of your community.” BS

HOW THE MAKE-UP OF THE FLU VACCINE IS DECIDED

Earlier this year, the Francis Crick Institute hosted scientists from across the world for a series of data presentations and deliberations, culminating in a decision on which influenza virus strains will be in the vaccines for the Northern Hemisphere this autumn. Here the team give an insight into the process.

This year, the week of meetings to decide on the make-up of the annual influenza vaccine was held in the UK for the first time since the meeting was first held 70 years ago. Each lab, known as a WHO Collaborating Centre, works throughout the year to gather information on which virus strains are circulating and whether they will respond to current vaccinations and treatments. This is critical as the flu virus is constantly changing, resulting in a need for annual top-up vaccines.

The experts gather twice a year to present their findings, propose suggestions for which strains are most prevalent and listen to research from other areas of the globe.

This results in decisions on specific vaccines for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

The group also discusses zoonotic viruses, such as bird flu, to assess current risk. They identify which vaccine viruses we need ready and waiting, to be able to produce vaccines if these viruses evolve to spread more easily to and between humans.

Proposed vaccines

Following the week earlier this year there was an announcement including a summary of which strains were circulating, where they were distributed across the world and whether current antiviral drugs or the previous season’s vaccines work against them.

The WHO then announced which three strains they proposed for the two types of

vaccines available for manufacturers to make. They continue to recommend trivalent vaccines, which have three slots –two for A-type flu viruses and one for a B-type flu virus.

The vaccine composition in both types was the same as last year, apart from an update to one of the A viruses in both vaccines. This was to reflect that this strain has evolved and the old strain in the vaccine does not match circulating viruses as well. It is predicted that the newer virus may be prevalent in the Northern Hemisphere this autumn.

The group also reported on zoonotic transmission of influenza from cows and birds and showed whether these strains could be targeted by candidate vaccine viruses already waiting in the wings for production, or if new candidates needed to be made. This allows preparedness for potential future outbreaks.

Best possible recommendations

Following the decision, industrial development of the vaccines kicked into action with manufacturers beginning production as early as possible to ensure that

“There are 3–5 million cases of severe seasonal influenza each year – our best armour is regular vaccination”

the vaccine is ready by October 2025.

Nicola Lewis, Director of the Worldwide Influenza Centre at the Crick, said: “The virus causing flu is constantly evolving and adapting, which means we’re racing to keep up with its movements. It wouldn’t be possible to characterise which strains pose the biggest threat just from our position in the UK; we need information from across the globe to get a full picture. The week-long decision process is hard work but allows us to come to a decision collaboratively and independently of national priorities. We wouldn’t be able to do this without the international nature of science, and flu research specifically.”

Wenqing Zhang, Head of the WHO Global Influenza Programme, said: “There are at least 3–5 million cases of severe seasonal influenza each year and our best armour at the moment is regular vaccination. By bringing together global experts from the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) and those associated with GISRS at this meeting, we make the best possible recommendations on viruses to be included in vaccines for use in the upcoming Northern Hemisphere season.

“We also stay on top of avian and swine influenza virus evolution and associated risks to humans, develop new candidate vaccine viruses to support countries’ prevention and control strategies, respond to avian and swine influenza outbreaks, and prepare for an influenza pandemic that might occur at any moment.” BS

Four

recommendations

The IBMS and global consultancy PA Consulting have released the report Earlier Diagnostics: End-to-End Diagnostic Pathways, which outlines critical improvements needed across all stages of the diagnostic process. It concludes with four recommendations.

1

Standardising the pre-analytical phase: Establishing uniform protocols for sample collection, labelling, and transportation, complemented by real-time tracking systems. This reduces errors and ensures quicker, more reliable sample handling.

2

Enhancing analytical efficiency with automation and AI: Implementing laboratory automation and AI-driven diagnostics to streamline test processing, prioritise urgent cases, and maintain high accuracy, easing strain on laboratory staff.

3

Improving post-analytical communication: Integrating diagnostic IT systems with clinical care platforms to provide faster, transparent result reporting to clinicians and patients, ensuring clear, actionable data that supports informed healthcare decisions.

4 Bringing diagnostics closer to patients: Expanding communitybased diagnostic centres and home testing solutions, thereby ensuring equitable access, particularly for underserved communities. Initiatives such as community diagnostic centres demonstrate the potential to reduce delays and improve overall patient care.

David Wells, IBMS Chief Executive, said: “Improving diagnostics is not only about speed – it’s about shifting towards prevention and ensuring equitable care. By optimising every stage of the diagnostic pathway, we can significantly improve patient outcomes and build a sustainable, responsive healthcare system.”
