ummer is always a busy time at the College as we plan for events in autumn and winter. Thankfully, this year we have been afforded more certainty to prepare than we had in 2020. The government’s delay to the end of restrictions until 19 July is a necessary measure to combat the rise in cases. Many of you will understand the legitimate reasons for this but feel a sense of frustration. The College and our members remain committed to reducing transmission of Covid-19 in their everyday lives and workplaces and to ensure patients can still access services safely. It has been a particularly challenging time for final-year students. These accomplished people, the future of our profession, are about to venture out into the world. It is a rite of passage that is difficult to adjust to even in normal circumstances. My thoughts are with all those studying podiatry who have had to suffer interruptions and unfortunate conditions in the final years of their education. The quality of this year’s graduates is as high as ever, and the College stands ready to support them at every stage in their career.
For the second time in its history, the College hosted its AGM online. This has allowed more of you to attend and has boosted engagement between the College and our members. Now, more than ever, there are increasing opportunities for you to ask questions about our performance. I was pleased to see members of all stripes attend the event and have their say, and many more of you vote on our resolutions by proxy. We have published the results, which were followed by many of you live on social media, on our news channels. The day of the AGM held extra significance, of course, as later that afternoon our Summer Festival of Learning concluded. More than 1000 of you attended this two-day event. Many thanks to all who attended and took part, including our speakers, sponsors and online exhibitors. We have much to look forward to in the coming months. College staff are now planning the annual conference and exhibition at the ACC Liverpool from 18 to 20 November – three days of expert speeches, plenary and concurrent sessions and the largest podiatry exhibition in Europe. Those exhibitors who have signed up to attend so far are industry-leading, diverse and exciting. Despite the forecasted end to restrictions this month, the College stands ready to adapt to any eventuality. We will keep members informed on these pages and across our usual channels. For now, I hope you enjoy this issue of The Podiatrist, continue to stay safe, and have a lovely summer. STEVE JAMIESON Chief executive
