elcome to SET's Membership Review of 2021-22, which highlights our key achievements over the past year. As the repercussions of Covid-19 continued, SET members have faced the ongoing challenges head-on, delivering the highest-quality teaching and training to post-14 learners. In support, SET has remained agile and responsive, ensuring our members have access to relevant support, guidance and professional development activities. The SET team was particularly busy during 2021. As promised, we launched our new website in May, which gave members access to a new-look member dashboard, an improved CPD log and quick access to our 14 special interest digests, which many of you have signed up for. We also reviewed the Code of Practice – the revised Code of Ethics and Conduct will come into force on 1 April and is a key pillar of professionalisation, detailing behaviour and conduct expected of our members. I would urge all members to ensure they are familiar with the new code,

which you can find overleaf, before the new membership year gets under way. Although 2021 was a challenging year, our SET community continues to grow. We are reporting the highest number of Corporate Partners and individual SET members ever, which is a clear indication that during difficult times, the support of a professional body with access to a community of practitioners is essential to maintaining and driving best practice throughout the sector. Looking forward, SET has ambitious plans to grow our membership significantly over the next three years to ensure we are truly representative of the sector. To help us achieve this, we are asking each and every one of you to act as our ambassadors: together, we are undoubtedly stronger. So please do spread the word with your colleagues and throughout your networks. We are proud to support you all and we look forward to working with you during the next 12 months.

CODE OF ETHICS AND CONDUCT

MEMBERSHIP REVIEW

THE CODE IN FULL

Maintaining standards The new and updated SET Code of Ethics and Conduct includes references to professional online conduct and sustainability, as well as supporting the development of others. Following a review in autumn 2021, the new and updated SET Code of Ethics and Conduct will be launching in April 2022, for the new membership year. The new version considers developments in recent years and references both professional online conduct and a dedication to sustainability; two areas that have seen rapid growth in recent years. We have also included points on supporting the development of others, advocating for the profession, and ensuring inclusion. The SET Code of Ethics and Conduct is a marker of professionalism for the sector, differentiating SET members from non-member practitioners. The obligations of the code are grouped into headings of professional responsibility (your commitment to the industry), professional behaviour (your commitment to yourself) and professional competency (your commitment to development). They apply to all members, at all stages of your career.

THE SET CODE OF ETHICS AND CONDUCT IS A MARKER OF PROFESSIONALISM FOR THE SECTOR

Professional responsibility As a member of SET, you agree to: 1. Uphold the reputation of the profession – you must not act in a manner that is likely to undermine the public’s faith and confidence in you and your profession. 2. Uphold your responsibilities as a further education and training professional towards stakeholders and the wider community. 3. Ensure appropriate access to inclusive activities and services for the further education and training sector. 4. Support others in their development and be an advocate for the profession. 5. Behave in a suitable way to safeguard young people, adults at risk and, where relevant, children within your care. 6. Not engage in any online behaviour that would not be acceptable in your workplace, that puts your profession into discredit, or that is illegal. Professional behaviour As a member of SET, you agree to: 1. Act ethically, honestly and with integrity in the educational setting, without compromising or abusing your position. 2. Act in a way that exhibits and fosters respect for other people’s customs, habits, culture and personal beliefs, recognising difference as a strength. 3. Act in a way which demonstrates and promotes sustainable development and respects human rights standards. 4. Comply with all reasonable requests for information from SET (including all reasonable requests that you consent to the disclosure of information held by third parties about࣢you).

5. Co-operate with any investigation in your capacity as a further education and training professional and in accordance with the law. 6. Not seek to stop any person from raising a concern or from whistleblowing, nor to act unfairly towards them if they were to do so. 7. Act in accordance and adhere to the terms and conditions of membership and inform SET within 15 working days of any information which may have a bearing on your suitability for membership. Professional competency As a member of SET, you agree to: 1. Uphold and demonstrate commitment to the ETF Professional Standards (et-foundation.co.uk/ supporting/professional-standards). 2. Use reasonable professional judgement when it comes to your responsibilities and obligations to students, colleagues, institutions and the profession as a whole. 3. Take care to ensure the safety and welfare of learners and comply with relevant statutory provisions to support their wellbeing and࣢development. 4. Respect the rights of learners and colleagues in line with relevant legislation and organisation࣢requirements. 5. Maintain professional knowledge and competence through continuing professional development in both your teaching and subject specialism. SET values In return, we, the Society for Education and Training, agree to act in accordance with our values. We are Responsive, Striving for Excellence, Inclusive, Expert and Trustworthy. We will: 1. Be responsive by listening to our members and providing effective solutions. 2. Continue to strive for excellence, aiming for the highest standards in everything we do. 3. Be inclusive and reflect your views in our thinking and actions. 4. Base our decisions on evidence and expertise from you, our members, and the wider࣢sector. 5. Be open, honest and act with integrity.

CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS

With 12 new providers joining SET as Corporate Partners in 2021, there are now 36 organisations that have taken the step to support the development of their staff

STRONG

COMMITMENT 2

021 was a big year for SET Corporate Partnerships, with 12 new providers joining us and supporting the development of their staff, taking the total number of SET Corporate Partners to 36. We’re delighted that so many organisations are taking these steps to improve the standard of teaching and professionalism, and we’re looking forward to working with our partners to continue this over the coming years. Some of those who have already signed up have outlined the benefits they have seen as a result:

Jonathan Gallie, people and talent director, Babington “So far, we’ve benefited from access to materials that support continued professional development, as well as thought leadership around the future of education and training. We will welcome the ongoing development and our own contribution to SET CPD materials, contributing to and attending future conferences, together with practical discussion around the attraction and development of talent in the sector.”

David Brook, FSET, ATS, CTeach, training and development manager, SecuriGroup “We became a SET Corporate Partner last year as part of our commitment to benchmarking best practice within our sector. As the first chartered teacher in the private security industry, my aim was to ensure that SecuriGroup maximised the potential opportunities of my own experiences and this partnership to develop our inhouse team of trainers and improve the quality of teaching and learning across the organisation. All our in-house team of trainers have professional membership ranging from associate, affiliate and member to fellow. This builds confidence in our trainers and our commitment to the ethos of lifelong learning. We network with SET partners and access resources and CPD events, and use these to improve professional practice. Although we are still in the early days, feedback has been extremely positive. Our team strive towards commitment to the 20 Professional Standards for further education and this has led to improved professional practice. We are

PRACTITIONER ADVISORY GROUP

On the inside SET enjoys a strong following from people throughout the FE sector. Here, Martine Ellis of the PAG and Phil Green from the PAG and SMB outline what it means to them Martine Ellis, ATS, FSET, CTeach “SET’s mission to champion the quality and professionalism of teaching and training across post-14 education really resonates with me. Joining the Practitioner Advisory Group (PAG) has allowed me to lend my support more practically. I’m in Guernsey, in the Channel Islands, and sometimes we face different challenges to our colleagues in the UK. Another reason for joining the PAG was to share the island perspective. “My primary interests are initial teacher training, professional learning and teacher wellbeing. The PAG was recently asked to provide feedback on the ETF stakeholder plan and revised Professional Standards – this was a highlight of my PAG membership. Supporting the development of the Trainee Teacher Advisory Group has also been fulfilling. I hope to work with the PAG in the future to find ways for SET to continue supporting teacher wellbeing. “One benefit of being a PAG member that I did not anticipate

was that I now have access to a new, diverse, highly engaged professional network. I have connected with many of my PAG colleagues outside meetings, especially on Twitter. Our conversations have enhanced my professional learning extensively, and I hope that we will all be able to meet face-to-face (and share chocolate brownies) in the summer.” Martine leads professional development, scholarly activity and teacher education at The Guernsey Institute. She also writes and speaks about wellbeing-driven productivity, professional learning and personal knowledge management.

Phil Green, ATS, FSET, CTeach, learning and development executive, who also sits on the SET management board (SMB) “2021 was another uncertain and stressful year where SET was able to really showcase what it can offer and how it can support its members. I have been part of the SET management board and PAG since 2019, and have always felt in a privileged position to help, support and connect those at the forefront of teaching and training with decisions discussed, at both PAG and SMB levels, in the best interests of SET members. “We have seen teaching and training going from face-

to-face to online, as well as hybrid models. I have been proud to see the positive impact that SET has made with its wide selection of offerings to members. Whether through CPD, webinars, sharing best practice or its specialist networks, SET has been a constant port of call for members in a time of࣢uncertainty. “This is reflected in the number of members (established and new) attending online events and activities organised by SET as a result of feedback from members and input from PAG members and decisions made by the SMB. “Ironically, all of this has happened in a time of stress within teaching and training. I have been proud to see SET strengthen its identity and support of its members.” Phil is a Fellow of SET and a PAG and SMB member. He is also a member of the Chartered College of Teaching and has QTLS, ATS and Chartered Teacher Status. In his spare time, he works for England Athletics as a coach education tutor.

Shaping strategy The Trainee Teacher Advisory Group is helping to ensure SET’s membership offering for those studying or recently completing Initial Teacher Education remains relevant

I

n April 2021, the Trainee Teacher Advisory Group (TTAG) was introduced. The group was launched to gain valuable feedback from members who are either studying their Initial Teacher Education (ITE) or in their first year after qualification, to complement the feedback provided by the already-established Practitioner Advisory Group (PAG). The group meets online three times a year to give its views on upcoming plans, helping us to determine content, services and SET benefits for those who are going through or have recently completed their ITE journey. By providing its own experience and knowledge, the TTAG helps SET to improve and develop its membership offer.

The group has also had the opportunity to advise us on key issues affecting those who have recently undertaken their ITE journey so we can respond to this via existing and potential SET services and benefits. In the group’s first two meetings, members discussed resources and content that would help support teaching and learning, CPD that could bridge the gap between teaching qualification and employment, and ITE support during the pandemic. We are continuing to expand the group; having recruited new members in January, we will run a further recruitment drive in 2022. Keep an eye on our emails and social feeds to be the first to know when more spaces are available to join the TTAG.

“Since joining the Trainee Teacher Advisory Group (TTAG) in April, I’ve had the opportunity to share my experience, knowledge and pedagogical trends with the group. We work collaboratively and reinforce best practice – discussing the key issues affecting us and the sector, the quality of placement experience, whether the ITE courses have prepared you for the type of teacher you want to be, and how to improve the comprehensibility of training offers. The TTAG meetings focus on expanding SET’s offer to certify highquality outcomes for trainees and are a great opportunity to connect with others at a similar stage in their career. “The TTAG is a fabulous platform in preparing trainees for advanced reflection and provides consistency of excellent standards of professionalism.”

PROFESSIONAL STATUS AND STANDARDS

MEMBERSHIP REVIEW

PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS REVIEW The Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers have become an essential tool in informing and supporting the continuing professional development of teachers and trainers. The Education and Training Foundation has created this differentiated structure to provide a common language for understanding and communicating career progression The standards are helping to drive culture change within the sector, focus initial teacher education and continuous professional development, and provide a holistic view of what makes a professional educator in our sector The standards were established in 2014. Although they are still relevant, it was agreed that a five-year review cycle was needed. This has now been established, and the professional status and standards team has now commenced the first review The team has engaged with our Practitioner

Advisory Group and key stakeholders from across the further education and training sector to update the Professional Standards and its associated framework. Other associations in a number of industries have also been consulted to establish best practice The first quarter of 2022 will focus on testing and support arrangements for the revised framework, and the team will engage with SET members, Corporate Partners and further education practitioners to complete this The revised Professional Standards will be launched later in 2022

SET BENEFITS

There are a number of ways in which you can ensure you make the most of your SET membership

AXX MAXIMUM VALUE 1

Post-nominals

As a SET member, your postnominals are a key benefit. Your membership designations are a public mark of your professionalism and your continued commitment to upholding standards and integrity through the Code of Ethics and Conduct and ongoing CPD activities. SET strongly advocates the use of your post-nominals to help support our work in raising your profile (and ours too) and to promote the value of the FE profession more widely. Using your SET membership designations provides formal recognition

of your skills and expertise and shows that you are part of a vibrant community of FE practitioners, managers and leaders dedicated to the advancement of FE. They also demonstrate your expertise and knowledge to your colleagues, employer and the wider world.

SET Special Interest Groups

In the last 12 months we’ve launched SET Special Interest Groups (SIGs), linked to the Special Interest Digest topics decided by you, our members. The SIGs provide opportunities for like-minded people to network, and share ideas and expertise around a certain theme. The SIG events are short – virtual and just an hour long, typically held over a Friday lunchtime. A speaker briefly shares their experiences on a topic and then attendees move into breakout rooms to discuss further in smaller groups. We’re looking forward to developing these groups in the coming year and offering more opportunities for SET members to connect with others around important topics. Make sure you’re signed up to the Special Interest Digest topics that interest you (this can be done through your online MySET dashboard) to be the first to hear about SIG events in the future.

SET Conference

For the past two years, we’ve offered the SET conference as an online event in response to the pandemic. For 2022, we’re delighted to return to holding a faceto-face event, and we look forward to welcoming you to The Vox conference centre in Birmingham on Thursday 3 November 2022. The virtual conferences have enabled us to continue to provide CPD and networking opportunities for members over the past two years; however, we’re looking forward to getting together in person again and making the most of the benefits that face-to-face brings.
