he past year was a very exciting one for the CLA Charitable Trust. Thanks to all our members and their increased contributions, not only have we been able to make more grants to projects, but we have also been able to increase the level of funding we can provide. Thank you to everyone for their contribution in 2021. On top of that, we have also welcomed three new trustees to the Trust. So, what have we achieved this year? Our key aims are twofold. Firstly, to fund charities and social enterprises that focus on advancing people’s physical and mental health and wellbeing by delivering access, recreational and educational opportunities within and about the countryside. Secondly, funding organisations that promote and encourage education in sustainable farming, food production and rural land management. Within this, our priorities are to support children and young people who are disadvantaged financially, physically or mentally, or who come from areas of deprivation. In 2021, we received 74 applications and we were delighted to fund 33 of them, amounting to £106,733. All the projects we funded are doing incredible work and make fantastic differences to so many people’s lives. The trustees and chair have had the pleasure of visiting

some of these charities. We are continually inspired by the organisations’ passion, dedication and importantly, ambition. The funding we provide contributes to both capital and running costs. We were delighted to be able to support Bryntail Cottage Charity in Wales, which used funding to restore an ancient cottage that enables inner-city children living in the second most deprived constituency in England to stay and learn about the countryside. The Trust was particularly pleased that there was a connection between Bryntail Cottage Charity and a nearby CLA member who will provide onfarm education for the charity.

It is always hard for charities to raise funds towards running costs, and this has been compounded by Covid-19. We were delighted that 48% of the grants awarded in 2021 specifically supported running costs. We provided Growing Well, a charity in the Lake District, with funding to continue to run its educational programmes. These support mental health recovery through horticulture training, enabling individuals to achieve City & Guilds qualifications, and increase their employment opportunities. The trustees want to thank all CLA members for their continued support of the CLA Charitable Trust, and look forward to further growing our grant giving in 2022.
