Chargers 11 Warriors 9 The Chargers won this tight defensive game from the charity stripe. They were able to hit 6 pre-game free throws and another in the 3rd quarter that proved to be all the difference. The Warriors played their hearts out and held the Chargers scoreless while inching their way to a tie at halftime. Trouble started for them when the Charger’s Lareul Clintt entered the game after the half and immediately contributed a free throw and lay-up to give his squad a 2 point lead that they would never relinquish. Darrel Sahuri led the Chargers scorers with 4 points. Kostaki Goumenidis led the Warriors with his scrappy defense and 4 points while Adrian Fonseca scored 3. Justin Seeger was also key for the Warriors with multiple rebounds and steals. What was different was that Parsons decided to enter the offensive foray as well with a 9 point debut to lead his team to a convincing win over the Tracy Warriors. You wouldn’t have been able to deduce that from the start of the game, however, as the Tracy squad was in the lead 12-11 at the half with Edward Navarro leading his team with 4 points. A scoreless second half doomed them as Parsons, Vin Gaines III and Aiden Sorenson went to work with Gaines and Sorenson each finishing with 5. Exotic Warriors 33 All Stars 6 The Exotic Warriors know how to put the ball into the bucket and they did so in impressive fashion this week. Jackson Milanese and Tristen DeBenedetti led the way with 10 and 9 points respectively. Ethan Knaus and Diego Apostol added 5 and 4 respectively. The All Stars came out shooting well from the line but were unable to score a single field goal in the contest. Christopher Kee, Daman Randhawa and Drake Murphy played excellent defense for the All Stars. After the dust settled it was the Dub Nation who outlasted their opponent to claim sole possession of first place and the undefeated title. The game featured gifted players with advanced basketball skills going head to head. Golden State’s Kyle Ramirez has averaged 17 points a game this season while Dub Nation’s Jaden Martinez is averaging 13. Both of these players hit double figures as expected with Ramirez scoring 13 and Martinez 10. The difference for Dub Nation was a stellar offensive performance from Sean Rutter who broke into double figures for the first time with a season-high 10 points. Golden State nailed their free throws and started the game ahead 7-5 and maintained the lead going into the half. But Dub Nation outscored the Warriors 8-3 in the 3rd quarter to lead for the first time and then were able to hold off the Golden State surge as time ran out in the 4 th. Joseph Hunter added 4 points for Golden State and was the only other Warrior to score from the field besides Ramirez. Warriors Hartaj Brar and Osi Latu turned in great defensive performances and Zack Brown took care of the rebounds. Nathan Taclas, LaRell Dean and Jacob Sawyer all gave outstanding performance for the winning Dub team. Emily Huddleston help Negron by adding 4 points of her own. Geovanna Brown and Jasmine Khangura made key steals and Kali Meek played outstanding defense as well for the Silvers. Brooke Gunn has been working hard on her free throws and this week she nailed one to help seal the victory. Hannah Hint was the sole scorer for the Divas as she hit a free throw and added a lay-up to finish with all 3 of their points. She was aided defensively by Madisyn Zamora and Nyah Jackson. Blue Jays 12 Flamethrowers 10 The Blue Jays notched their first win of the season with a close win over the Flamethrowers. The game was a very tight defensive struggle with each team employing very active zone defenses to try and frustrate the inside game of their opponent. The difference was on the offensive end this week for the Jays who usually rely on agile big man, Bryan Redfearn to do the bulk of their scoring. Redfearn wasn’t able to get to the rim because of the tight defense but his teammates responded in a big way as 4 other Jays got into the scoring column, many for the first time. The Flamethrower’s Naveed Mansur did his best to lead his team and netted 6 points in the process while his team’s emotional leader Estevon Vasquez hit a shot and was all over the court defensively. Shane Mertz also added a bucket but the Flamethrowers came up just one bucket short as the horn sounded. The Warriors were great offensively but they were plagued defensively as they committed 15 team fouls and saw their top scorer, Jonathan Huerta, foul out just when they needed him most. In the 4 th quarter those Warrior team fouls sent the All Stars to the line 4 times for crucial one and one free throw opportunities and the All Stars made good on 3 of the 4 charity shots to get within one and then tie the game. With the game all tied up and seconds remaining Lamar Dean made the front end of his one and one opportunity to sneak in this close win for his squad. The Warriors were led by Huerta with 8 points including two long range treys. He was helped by Marlon Matute-Diaz’s 6. The All Stars were led by Dean’s 7 points and Wyatt Brandt’s 3. Splashers 22 Lakers 13 Both teams came into Saturday’s game with perfect records. Both teams wanted that elusive perfect record and played their hearts out to attain it as evidenced by the 27 foul calls made equally between them. It was the Splashers plentiful offense that took them over the top. Omar Haronee led the Splashers with his 10 points including 2 long threes from beyond the arc. Angelo Rodrigues backed him up with 6 first quarter points and a smattering of Splashers each chipped in a bucket apiece. The storyline for the Splashers was their defense as they held the Lakers who on average score 27 points a game to just 13 points. The Laker’s Avery Knox was still a force to be reckoned with and proved that it doesn’t matter if you foul him because he can hit his free throws, swishing 3 of 5 from the stripe. The problem was that only two other Lakers were able to find the bucket. Hurricanes 22 Sparks 15 The Hurricanes continue their perfect record now deep into the season with another convincing win against the young and scrappy Sparks club. Maliyah Hutchinson was back from injury after missing a game the previous game and she stepped right back into her role as the point guard and leading scorer for her team. On this occasion she had 11 points with Savina Salazar and Deanna Amani backing her up with 4 and 3 respectively. Although it doesn’t always show in the box score the Hurricanes have multiple players who contribute to their success by playing aggressive defense, rebounding and passing. Of note was Savina Salazar’s work containing Sparks’ star Jada Cannon to only 4 points. The Sparks are an exciting team with Cannon in the paint and Mysteree Chairez slashing style of play and they each had 4 on this occasion to lead their squad. Box Score Hurricanes: Anjelie 0 Maya G 0 Mariah 0 Savina 4 Zoe 2 Mackenzie 2 Maliyah 11 Natashia 0 Deanna 3 Sparks: Madalyn 2 Maleyah 1 Mysteree 4 Nevaeh 0 Leanna 2 Jada 4 Grace 0 Olivia B 2 Trill Squad 37 Warriors 21 This exciting division features talented athletes from 5 th all the way up to 8th grade. This can be somewhat of a challenge as the younger players learn to compete at a higher level. What makes it work are the amazing coaches we are blessed to have. A case in point are the Trill Squad and Warriors coaches who make sure their younger players are heavily involved in each game. The Warrior’s point guard Aliya Tipton (6 pts), small forward Maya Sekhon (5 pts) are both 5th graders along with Kiana Ablaza, a 6th grader (6 pts) who are in the mix of every game and getting better each time. The Trill Squad’s defender extraordinaire Mia McNesby and Cassie Duke who had 5 steals Saturday are also 5th graders. It is fun to watch these players develop into solid basketball players. At the end of the day it was a host of Trill Squad 7th graders who grabbed the win; Allison Kee (16 pts), Autumn Harris (13 pts), and Olivia Quin (8 pts) with Taylor Hoyt grabbing the boards. Air Ballerz 31 Splash Fam 28 An old sports adage says that on any given day any team can beat any other without regard to records, etc. Such was the case this Saturday as the winless Splash Fam took on the unbeaten Air Ballerz. The Fam seemed like a different team than we’ve seen before with an aggressive offense that rained treys as if they were stealing a page from the Ballerz playbook. This seemed to have the Ballerz on their heels as the Splash Fam led all game until late in the 4th quarter. With a first loss in sight Ballerz Caden Duke and Jacob Shrout led a furious comeback outscoring their opponent 11-4 and taking home the win. Brandon Moun, Scott Shook, Omeid Nadery and Andreas Goumenidis led the scoring for the Fam. Point guard Goumenidis was key directing his squad and getting through the Ballerz defense for deft passes. The Air Ballerz’ Shrout led all scorers with 13 points and power forward Ethan Inman was a rebounding beast and defensive presence. Ironically it wasn’t until a 5 th player showed up that the Wolverines were able to pull away and grab a win to move past the DC team in the rankings. Armaan Pannu and Justive Sandoval are two of the best scorers in the league and they dueled to an impasse as each player finished with 13 for the winners. Noah Bauer banged out 8 points in the paint with support from guard Paul Coleman who also finished with 8 points.
