Welcome to Wine and… This year we are on hiatus from our usual Grape Vine which will be back next year. Wine and… came to us as a fun way of filling the creative void. Wine and... art is what we are touching on in this Special Edition for your pleasure. Art goes with wine and wine goes with art. Art when defined includes the various branches of creative activities, such as painting, music, sculpting, performing arts, costuming, lighting, designing, literature, and dance. Please enjoy with us this year’s Wine and...

Paint and Sip Parties The painting and wine industry, often referred to as “paint and sip,” combines the power of two dynamic and longstanding industries: the creative arts and the hospitality sector. It also draws upon the power of the flourishing “Do It Yourself” market and home decor trend. Mix in hospitality partners like restaurants, bars and wineries, date night, girl’s night out and creative corporate parties, and you have a healthy industry with incredible room for growth. All you do is show up and an instructor walks you through step-by-step directions on how to paint the model art piece for the evening. While they paint, customers enjoy an alcoholic beverage of their choice (or, if they prefer, coffee or water). And when they finish, they get to keep their creations. You get to sip alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages while you try to cultivate your creative side and flex your artistic muscle. There are many paint and sip businesses, such as The Wet Palette Paint Parties in Richland, located at 615 The Pkwy. On occasion art studios, art galleries, wineries, restaurants and community centers will even put paint and sip nights together as a one-off a kind special event. A quick Facebook search or phone call to a local winery answers any questions of whether they will be hosting a “paint and sip” or “cork and canvas” class. Classes can cost $35 to $65 a person, depending on locale and format. If looking for a certain paint project, the website www.paintnite.com can also assist in finding local businesses that offer a night of paint and sip fun. All you have to do is use the search engine to specify the town you are wanting to paint in or the distance you are wanting to travel to. Most places are family friendly - they’ll allow someone under 21 in to join the fun.

The Best Pairing, Wine and Art By Bright Cellars

Renaissance & Muscat Blanc (Da Vinci Mona Lisa 1503-1515) The Renaissance artists were drama kings. (Feminism wasn’t cool yet.) Back then, intense light and shading was the modern-day Instagram filter. In the Mona Lisa, Da Vinci fused the subject with the background using a hazy or dreamlike effect called sfumato. So you know, he went bold with #nofilter. Also originating in Greece and Italy, Muscat Blanc was likely Mona Lisa’s wine of choice (and probably made her feel hazy, too). High in fruit and acidity, this wine is commonly characterized by lemon, orange and pear flavors. Romanticism & Riesling (Caspar David Friedrich Wanderer above the Sea of Fog 1818) The Romantics were an 1880s version of the modern-day tree-hugger. A very emotional bunch, they could look at a flower and start to cry. Riesling is the wine to pair with these lovers. Originating in Germany, Riesling is full of natural, fruity flavors like lime, green apple and beeswax. A wine so beautiful, it’ll probably make you cry too. The Impressionists (Claude Monet The Japanese Footbridge 1899) The Impressionists ain’t got time for that. Working outside, their style was fast and sketchy, aiming to capture the quick-changing natural light. They were all about the sensory experience. Since he worked in Paris, I’m guessing Claude Monet sipped (rapidly) on that Rosé, soaking in the floral and fruity flavors. Post-Impressionism & Syrah Vincent Van Gogh The Starry Night 1889 The Post-Impressionists were moody af. They used color to create visual tension and intense emotional imbalance. Much like these emotionally overloaded artists, Syrah is a full-bodied wine saturated in rich, intense flavors of dark berries, plum and chocolate. The deep color of Syrah would make those Post-Impressionists swoon. Cubism & Chardonnay (Pablo Picasso Three Musicians 1921) Paris in 1907 got real weird. The

Cubists revolted against any realism and depicted reality in abstract shapes and lines. They took out all perspective and depth and flattened it right out. Similarly, the French wine region Jura is known for being the “most obscure region” in all of France. Their most popular grape? You guessed it, Chardonnay. Surrealism & Grenache (Salvador Dali The Persistence of Memory 1931) If you thought the Cubists of Paris were on something, wait till you see the work of the Surrealists. Their work portrays a dream-like state full of hallucinations. They aimed at exploring the unconscious. Fun. What wine pairs better with this movement than Grenache? Also originating in Spain, this wine’s high alcohol content may have contributed to some of the inspiration behind these works. Full of fruit, you can find flavors of dried strawberry, plum and grapefruit in this dreamy wine. After just a few sips you’ll feel your taste buds melt, almost as dramatically as the clocks in Dalí’s most famous piece. Pop Art & Sauvignon Blanc (Andy Warhol Campbell’s Soup Cans 1962) Quite different from the Surrealists, the artists of the Pop Art era told it like it was. They didn’t sugar coat anything. What you saw was what you got. Artists like Andy Warhol painted ordinary objects, like Campbell’s soup cans or Brillo boxes. Much like the work of the Pop Artists, Sauvignon Blanc is in-your-face and overt. While specific notes and flavors can vary depending on its region, Sauvignon Blanc will always be crisp, acidic and remarkable. You may not be an art historian, and you probably aren’t a sommelier. But at least now you have an imaginative way to discuss the flavors of your favorite wines and the techniques used for the world’s most famous art pieces. We promise, if you describe the first sip of a Syrah as “Van Gogh swiftly painting a plum-stained Starry Night on your palate,” people’s jaws will drop. Remember to sip with that pinky up, you’re a fancy wino now.

Summer Wine

Strawberries cherries and an angel’s kiss in spring My summer wine is really made from all these things I walked in town on silver spurs that jingled to A song that I had only sang to just a few She saw my silver spurs and said lets pass some time And I will give to you summer wine Ohh-oh-oh summer wine Strawberries cherries and an angel’s kiss in spring My summer wine is really made from all these things Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time And I will give to you summer wine Ohhh-oh summer wine My eyes grew heavy and my lips they could not speak I tried to get up but I couldn’t find my feet She reassured me with an unfamiliar line And then she gave to me more summer wine Ohh-oh-oh summer wine Strawberries cherries and an angel’s kiss in spring My summer wine is really made from all these things Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time And I will give to you summer wine Mmm-mm summer wine When I woke up the sun was shining in my eyes My silver spurs were gone my head felt twice its size She took my silver spurs a dollar and a dime And left me cravin’ for more summer wine Ohh-oh-oh summer wine Strawberries cherries and an angel’s kiss in spring My summer wine is really made from all these things Take off your silver spurs and help me pass the time And I will give to you summer wine Mmm-mm summer wine Songwriters: Lee Hazlewood

1. Jay Z, “Picasso Baby” (2013) Marina Abramović was just one of the many art world figures to team up with hip hop mogul Jay Z for the music video for his 2013 single, which makes references to Art Basel, the Tate Modern, Jeff Koons, and Leonardo da Vinci, among artists and art institutions. 2. The Creation, “Painter Man” (1966) British band the Creation released this song, which chronicles the struggles of a man looking to make it as a painter, in 1966, a year prior to their album, We Are Paintermen. Boney M. later did a magical cover of the songin 1978. 3. Nat King Cole, “Mona Lisa” (1950) Nat King Cole ruled the charts in the 1950s and early ’60s with a warm voice and a gift for the slow songs, and this is no exception. In a piano ballad about the beauty of a woman and the beauty of love, Cole describes his appreciation of Leonardo da Vinci‘s Mona Lisa, known for her mysterious smile. “Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?/Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?” Cole asks. 4. Lady Gaga, “Applause” (2013) The Jeff Koons-designed cover was all the rage when Lady Gaga’s album ArtPop came out in 2013. (It also secured a spot on artnet News’s Top 12 Album Covers Designed by Famous Artists in 2014.) The lead single, “Applause,” a pumped-up and lively anthem, also features some fine art-inspired lyrics, with Gaga singing “One second I’m a kunst/ Then suddenly the kunst is me/Pop culture was in art/Now, art’s in pop culture in me.” 5. David Bowie, “Andy Warhol” (1971) This classic tribute to Andy Warhol immortalizes the artist’s career as a dedicated leader in the Pop Art movement. David Bowie‘s enigmatic lyricsprove to be as mesmerizing as the song itself, such as the chorus “Andy Warhol, silver screen/Can’t tell them apart at all.” The words reference Wahol’s wide range of creative achievement, from music to art to film, and capture just what an important figure he was for the evolution of art. In 1996, Bowie would go on to play Warhol, donning the artist’s signature silver wig, for Julian Schnabel‘s Jean-Michel Basquiat bio pic, Basquiat. 6. Don McLean, “Vincent (Starry Starry Night),” (1971) Written as a tribute to Vincent van Gogh‘s tragic life and the artist’s most famous painting, The Starry Night, the song also includes a description of a few other paintings by the Dutch post-Impressionist, such as his selfportrait without beard. “Frame-less heads on nameless walls/With eyes that watch the world and can’t forget” sings Don McLean, best-known for the hit tune “American Pie,” in one haunting passage. The singer goes on to romanticize van Gogh’s tragic death, singing “You took your life, as lovers often do/But I could’ve told you Vincent/This world was never meant for/One as beautiful as you.” 7. Kanye West, “Famous” (2016) Ah, Kanye. The man is clearly no stranger to controversy. His latest stunt, a music video for his new song “Famous,” was inspired by American artist Vincent Desiderio‘s Sleep, a 24-foot-long painting of nudes on a bed with tangled sheets. For his version, West replaced the anonymous nudes with digitally-rendered bodies of famous celebrities, including singer Taylor Swift.

S hou l d Know

Lena Dunham railed against the video, saying that its depiction of women make them feel unsafe. Swift also protested the song, which includes an insulting line about her, but West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, subsequently leaked a phone call in which Swift appears to give the song her blessing. (West is used to being all anyone can talk about, so he probably didn’t mind the uproar.) 8. Paul McCartney and Wings, “Picasso’s Last Words (Drink To Me),” (1973) Paul McCartney can do no wrong with this serenade to pioneering Cubist master and all-around art great Pablo Picasso. At his death in 1973, Picasso’s last words were said to be “drink to me, drink to my heath, you know I can’t drink anymore,” which form the chorus of the song. 9. Coldplay, “Viva La Vida” (2008) Coldplay front-man Chris Martin was inspired to write the song by a Frida Kahlo painting titled Viva la Vida. The singer-songwriter was inspired by Kahlo’s perseverance in the face of polio, spinal injury, and chronic pain, he told Rolling Stone, saying, “She went through a lot of pain, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said Viva la Vida; I just loved the boldness of it.” 10. Florence and the Machine, “What the Water Gave Me” (2011) Another Frida Kahlo painting inspired this song off the 2011 Florence and the Machine album Ceremonials. “At lot of the time when I’m writing, things will just appear. I was writing the song and this book on symbolism was lying around, and it had the painting in it. It’s nice to mix the ordinary with extraordinary,” lead singer Florence Welsh, who penned the tune, told NME. The painting’s disturbing scene of people drowning in a bathtub are reflected in the song’s lyrics, which reference children being swept out to sea.

Where the West still lives

One of Yakima’s proudest accomplishments, The Capitol Theatre is at the heart and soul of Yakima’s qualityof-life. Restored in 1978, after a devastating fire, the 1920’s Pantages style theatre is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Capitol Theatre’s long history began over ninety years ago with Frederick Mercy, Sr.’s vision of a grand vaudeville theatre located in downtown Yakima. Construction on his dream project began in 1919. He commissioned renowned theatre architect B. Marcus Pretica, the architect of choice for the great vaudeville impresario Alexander Pantages, to construct his theatre. Another Pantages favorite, A. B. (Tony) Heinsbergen, was hired to create the decorative murals that graced the theatre’s interior. The April 5, 1920 opening performance of Maytime brought audiences in droves to see Yakima’s showcase. At that time, the Mercy Theatre was the largest theatre in the Pacific Northwest. One year later, the name officially changed to The Capitol Theatre. Today, The Capitol Theatre remains a testament to its past and the arts. Seating 1,500, the theatre is a frequent stopping point for touring Broadway shows and national concert artist. The stage is also home to the productions of numerous local organizations such as the Yakima Symphony Orchestra, the Yakima Town Hall Series and numerous dance recitals, school events, and concerts, with annual attendance at the Capitol Theatre exceeding the population of the City of Yakima. The 4th Street Theatre, a smaller 499 seat venue, located on the east side of The Capitol Theatre, provides Yakima with a highly-flexible space for private

events, from weddings and receptions to dance parties and celebrations. The theatre features state-of-the-art acoustics, and full sound and lighting systems and can accommodate events ranging from meetings, to weddings, to full stage productions. The Robertson Room is located on the lower level of the Capitol Theatre, and provides the perfect venue for both business meeting and private parties. Elegant and intimate, seating capacity is up to 190 for lecture style, or 60-80 for a formal dinner or 45 for a meeting in classroom style. Tours of these spaces are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. Contact us to schedule your visit today. arts@capitoltheatre.org

Mighty Tieton

Mighty Tieton is an artisan business incubator located in Tieton Washington which was created to establish successful, distinctive businesses by connecting creative entrepreneurs with local resources. This activity helps to improve the local economy by generating jobs, revitalizing buildings, and instilling a sense of hope, unusual possibilities, and dynamic connections with artisan businesses throughout the region and beyond. The City of Tieton is uniquely positioned to be a hub for artisan businesses. Tieton has some of the conveniences of a larger city, but without many of the disadvantages. Real estate is affordable. It’s close to Yakima and is part of a county of a quarter million people. The mayor and city council members are dedicated to business development, making it easy for entrepreneurs to set up shop and thrive. Over the past ten years Mighty Tieton has attracted many talented entrepreneurs to Tieton. In turn, this informal group has grown into an unusual marketing force and resource for Tieton itself. A dozen businesses have started or grown under the banner. Enterprises have the benefits of opting to share space, marketing platforms, labor, and shipping and fulfillment services. “ Writing in my sixty-fourth year, I can truthfully say that since I reached the age of discretion I have consistently drunk more than most people would say is good for me. Nor did I regret it. Wine has been for me a firm friend and a wise counselor. Often... SANDRA.PROOF.HGG#4.CMYK wine has shown me matters in their true 50.44736.THURS.1208.1/2PG./V.SPR perspective, and has, as though by the touch of a magic wand, reduced great disasters to small inconveniences. Wine has lit up for me the pages of literature and revealed in life romance lurking in the commonplace. Wine has made me bold but not foolish; has induced me to say silly things but not to do them.” --- Duff Cooper, Old Men Forget. SANDRA.PROOF.HGG#4.CMYK 50.44736.THURS.1208.1/2PG./V.SPR
