We recently had the opportunity to ask a few questions, including what the marketing strategy will be and how Sinotron will carry out this strategy to successfully introduce this device to the market in Singapore.

Why Sinotron? Sinotron has been the leading supplier of photocopier and printer consumables for over 15 years. Not only we are strong in the field, we also have strong technical support. How do you describe the feeling of Sinotron being the sole distributor in Singapore for Pantum? We are excited to have obtained the distributorship in Singapore. The printer industry is still large in Singapore and it is extremely timely to introduce our Pantum printers to everyone. Even though the landscape has changed tremendously, the digitalised platform will not entirely replace the printing needs of the consumer. In fact, technology has opened up more opportunities. How many models do you represent and do they include consumables products as well? Sinotron is distributing 4 models to start: P2500W, P3500DW, M6550NW and M6600NW. Our compact monochrome laser printers boast of a reasonable price, respectable speed, high monthly duty cycle, processor, memory and solid texture quality. Our printers are suitable for both personal and office use. The P2500W and P3500DW are single-function printers, whereas the M6550NW comes with 3-in-1 print, scan and copy functions. 4-in-1 is available in our M6600NW model. To top it off, all of the printers are equipped with WiFi and mobile printing capabilities. We are also distributing 2 models of toner cartridges: PC-210 & PC-310H, catering to the range of printers, with PC210 being universal with P2500W, M6550NW & M6600NW printers and PC-310H with P3500DW. What will be your strategic plan to introduce Pantum Printer to the market in Singapore? What will be your advantages and challenges? Our printers all come with WiFi and mobile printing capabilities that cater to the entire industry, from end users up to enterprises. The Pantum printer is retailing at a competitive price where consumers will find it worthwhile and affordable. A 3-year warranty is also applicable for our printers. On top of that, an inhouse ecommerce presence and external ecommerce platforms are also part of our plan to strategically market to our target audience. The saturated printer market competing with other big OEMs poses the greatest challenge. Who will be your target customers or channel customers? Our target customers are both end users and enterprises.

What will your marketing strategy be? What kind of trade events will be your best choice? Our marketing strategy is to reach out to our target consumers through various channels. We held our product launch recently at a premium art gallery in Orchard, for example. We are also actively participating in roadshows and exhibitions to create brand awareness for our products. Coming up next will be an exhibition at which we will be exhibiting—the Singapore IT fair, Comex Show 2016. Involvement in digital marketing is also the growing trend to generate awareness efficiently, and Sinotron is leveraging this platform to grow its consumer base. In other words, as mentioned earlier, we have both an in-house ecommerce platform and external ecommerce websites to conduct sales and spread awareness. What kind of support will Pantum offer you? We work closely with the main principal and they have provided us with much marketing support. How do you see the printing market development within the SEA market? There is definitely room for improvement in the printing market within the SEA regions, but we foresee that it will be growing over time. Hence, there will definitely be an opportunity for us to expand to the SEA markets. Where will be the next growth area for the printing industry? Where do you think lies the best profit potential? Who’s the Fairer of Them Both: HP or Xerox? HP and Xerox, two of the biggest names in imaging technology, are dealing with a changing market in pretty similar ways. First, HP split into two and now Xerox is following the example: by the end of the year there will be two companies, Xerox and Conduent. Xerox, a leaner, smaller Xerox, will deal in printers and other hardware, while Conduent will take the business process outsourcing services and all other services the original Xerox currently provides. HP’s split was along similar lines: hardware and services. Yet HP is betting big on 3D printing while Xerox has not so far announced any plans to venture into this field. In fact, to be fair, HP is more ambitious: its plans include a whole new tech ecosystem, as they call it, featuring both software and hardware. Xerox has no such ambitions and still it might be viewed by other players in document technology as a tasty morsel. Consolidation is always popular in times of trouble and the imaging and document technology market is troubled. There may be an acquisition in Xerox’ future. It’s hard to say which of the two – or rather four – companies is “fairer”. They have a different focus and priorities, so it would pay to watch them for a while.

Credit Suisse Pessimistic about HP Q3 Results, the Street Cautious Credit Suisse said in a note that HP Inc is likely to miss its estimates for its third-quarter 2016 financial performance. The bank cited weak demand for printers on a global scale and pressure on profit margins. Other analysts, however, from The Street, expect HP Inc. to report EPS of $0.44, in line with company projections of EPS between $0.43 and $0.46. Global spending on printers and other imaging machinery is slowing down and this is affecting all big players in the field, The Street analyst Kulbinder Garcha said, adding that HP Inc. is sensitive to movements in the Japanese yen since much of its printing cost base is denominated in the currency. The strong yen, in other words, is likely to affect the company’s profit margins.

Two New 3D Printing Techs to Watch As we know, the 3D printing space is bursting with constant innovation, so here are two projects worth watching: Borealis and Symbionica. Borealis is a metal 3D printing technology that, unlike other 3D metal printers working with metal powder, uses a robotic arm with a revolving head that can mix the powders while the printer is working and having it melted with a laser. The printer can also jet binders and materials. In addition, the Borealis has a second laser that can save a lot of time from secondary finishings by performing the smoothing, texturing or hole-drilling in the finished product while it’s still in the machine. The project is at the prototype level right now, with the final version planned for 2017 or 2018 and market launch for 2019. The Symbionica, for its part, is researching the viability of a 3D printing system specifically targeting the production of personalized bionics and prosthetics – basically smart implants that are cheap enough to be economically viable and good enough to serve their purpose. The project aims at a super-high level of customization, relying on a variety of materials that can be mixed within the sale item, which will be a clear advantage over currently existent prosthetics and bionics.

New Form of 3D Printing Using Thermoforming Not many people realize that that magic maker, Disney, has a whole separate network of research labs that support the company. It’s called Disney Research and has facilities in Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Boston, and Zurich. Supporting The Walt Disney Company, its primary purpose is to pursue new scientific and technological innovation to advance their own company’s entertainment efforts. Just recently, some of its researchers uncovered a new way of creating 3D models using the old method of thermoforming. The computational thermoforming technique works by first creating a digital image of the product and then using a 3D printer to print a negative mold of the image. Next, the negative mold is filled with a gypsum powder compound and using a vacuum former a layer of plastic coating is shrunk over the top of the item to add a layer of detail. The computational thermoforming process

then sets to work creating a 3D plastic copy over the previously printed maudlin a paper published by Disney Research, the authors go into detail about the hardware and software that is used during the process and also goes on to conclude how this method will be a valuable tool moving forward. By using computational thermoforming, manufacturing companies could save a fortune if they switched to this method of making products. Material costs are low, running costs are low, there are low hardware requirements but high fabrication speeds and quality. What more could you ask for?

The Ceramaker – Making the Best of Ceramics Ceramics is getting increasingly popular as a 3D printing material but it remains applicable in only a handful of areas, especially compared with the vast range of applications of resins and plastics. Still, many of its properties make it more suited for these applications, however limited, than any alternative. One of the main players in the ceramics field is French 3DCeram, creator of the Ceramaker. The Ceramaker uses a material consisting of alumina, zirconia and hydroxyapatite, made into a photocurable paste. The machine uses the SLA method and has a build volume of 300x300x110 mm, capable of achieving a layer thickness of just 25 microns. The items printed with the Ceramaker have attractive properties including thermal conductivity (thanks to the alumina, which is a heat conductor), strength, corrosion resistance, and low density. What’s even better, waste is reduced to a minimum since the unused paste can be recycled and reused. The printing process is anything but fast: it includes a machine layering paste on a flat surface, the laser curing the area of the desired shape, the all this repeating with the next layer. Eventually the excess paste is removed and the item is put in an oven to bake until the final item is ready. This slowness is offset by the level of accuracy of the prints.

Nike Leans on 3D Printing for Cutting-Edge Track Shoes Nike has used 3D printing extensively in the design and testing of its latest, cutting-edge track shoes, which just helped Jamaican athlete Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price win the gold medal in the 100-meter sprint. The sportswear giant used 3D printing to make the plate of the shoe with the spikes. Then the athlete tested 20 different versions of the Zoom Superfly Elite, which in this year’s Olympics will be worn by another 99 athletes that are sponsored by Nike.

3D Systems Reports Loss for Q2, H1 2016, Remains Upbeat 3D Systems reported a loss of $0.04 per share for the second quarter of 2016, and $0.20 for the first half of the year, on the back of slow demand for 3D printers and on-demand services, the company said. Till, it boasted healthy demand for its healthcare solutions and software, and noted its gross profit margin had risen to 50.9% in the second quarter thanks to these two segments. Still, revenues over the first six month of the year fell by 7% to $310.7 million.

Stratasys Posts Decline in Q2 Loss Stratasys reported an operating loss of $17.1 million for the second quarter of 2016, down from $33.5 million for the same period of 2015, with net loss at $18.5 million, down from $22.9 million a year earlier. Gross profit margin improved too, rising to 46.2%, up from 45.5% in Q2 2015. In the three-month period Stratasys expanded its offering by introducing a new design-to-print workflow application and a number of enhancements for its Fortus lineup of 3D printers, plus a professional services and consultancy package aimed at helping businesses make the most of 3D printing technology.

i.materialise Integrates with Windows 10 i.materialise, the online platform of Materialise, has been integrated with Windows 10, which will give every user of the operation system access to the platform and a 3D printer, regardless of where they are. The printer in question is one of Materialise’s array of industrial-scale printers. The

machines can print in titanium, gold, silver, and ceramic, among other materials and shipments are worldwide. Windows 10 users can design the item they want to have printed on their own desktops and then order the item printed by Materialise.

Vector Space Systems launches 3D Printed MiniRocket P-20 is a small rocket designed for the launch of minisatellites and developed by Vector Space Systems, a company set up by space tech veterans from SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, McDonnell Douglas, and Sea Launch. Most of its parts are 3D printed, which has made the rocket pretty affordable compared to traditional manufacturing. This means that the P-20 can be used by smaller companies who want to launch a mini-satellite, especially in light of the fact that it is the first of its kind – there are no other rockets specifically targeting mini-satellites. It’s not about satellites only, either. The rocket can carry loads of up to 50 kg into orbit.

Chinese researchers Devise New Hybrid Printing Method Researchers from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology have developed a new, hybrid printing method that combines traditional metal casting elements and 3D printing principles. The method, which they have been working on for a decade, is called intelligent micro casting and forging, and it eliminates a lot of the problems that arise with metal 3D printing or casting as standalone technologies, namely porosity, cracking, crumbling, etc. The hybrid technology is already being used to produce titanium joints for China’s stealth planes and its developers believe that it can make a big splash in aerospace as a whole. The maximum print area is 5.5x4.2x1.5 meters and the printer uses metal wire, rather than powder, which is cheaper, and the technology is also more efficient than selective laser melting.

The rocket was tested at the end of last month, when it carried into space a microsatellite for Iceye – a company focused on the launch of a series of small satellites carrying synthetic aperture radars, data from which Iceye will use to assist with decision-making in areas ranging from farming to humanitarian aid. The company just closed an agreement for 21 launches with Vector Space Systems.

Australian Scientists Develop Cheap Circuit 3D Printer

Polaroid Rolls Out Low-Cost 3D Printer for UK Market

The method combines 2 and 3D printing: the circuit board is first printed using inkjet technology but with a unique ink. The 3D print part is not exactly printing as such. It involves flashing a very powerful flash on the circuit, which affects the chemical properties of the ingredients of the ink, making it electrically conducive.

Polaroid has just announced a new addition to its 3D printer lineup: the ModelSmart 250S, which is specifically targeting the UK consumer, educational, and commercial markets, but with a special focus on consumer. The printer, with a price tag of GBP1,500, will be distributed across the country by Tech Data. The company said it is looking for partners to build a multi-tiered distribution program, which will offer buyers a series of discounts. The ModelSmart 250S is very user-friendly and comes with Polaroid’s Prep software, specifically designed for use by non-professionals. The printer has a print area of 250x150x150mm, with a resolution of between 50 and 350 microns. It also features Wi-Fi connectivity and can work

Scientists from Australia’s RMIT University in Melbourne and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization have developed a new 3D printing method using light, to print electronic components, more specifically circuitry.

The method is very cheap and has a great potential for wearable tech, such as for example solar panels to use as recharging source for a laptop or another mobile device.

FBI Get Around Touch ID Security Issues With 3D Printed Fingers Just when you thought it couldn’t get any stranger, here we are talking about the FBI printing fingers. Although it

may seem like a crazy concept at first, it is actually not too bad of an idea, it just needs a little work. One thing that has always been a pain for law enforcement officials is getting into locked iPhones. With the implementation of this new idea of 3D printing fingers, officials are hopeful that it will lead to the capture of more criminals and essentially make the world a better place. Professor Anil Jain from the Michigan State University, who is an expert in the field of biometric identifiers, has been hired by the FBI to take on this project. Being able to get into a murder victim’s smartphone to look for evidence or clues may mean the difference between catching the killer and letting them run free. As well as taking the victim of the crime’s fingerprints and making 3D printed fingers from them, the team also had to coat the printed product with a thin layer of metallic particles to activate the galvanic sensors found inside fingerprint scanners. Computational Thermoforming Combining 3D Printing and Molding A team from Disney Research has developed a new way of using 3D printing: as an intermediary stage in a process they call computational thermoforming. The process is a modification of traditional thermoforming used to make packaging, among other things, and involves making a 3D printed mold, then filling it with gypsum and then transforming this gypsum specimen into a 3D plastic form through thermoforming. The plastic used is in the form of a sheet, on which the design is printed. Then this sheet is put on top of the gypsum object, both put into a vacuum thermoforming machine. Computer simulations are used before the actual forming to make sure the plastic sheet follows exactly every crease and detail of the design. The researchers involved say the process is very cheap and very effective, and that it offers a great degree of detail plus, of course, a variety of colors.

Hewlett Packard Plans $275 Mln Buy of Hardware Maker Hewlett Packard Enterprise has agreed to purchase Silicon Graphics International Group for $275 million. The deal represents a price of $7.75 per share for the computer hardware maker, which is 30% above the target company’s recent stock price. According to HPE, the acquisition will add to its data analytics and computing business divisions and will boost its sales to government agencies. SGI used to be a big player in computer hardware once upon a time but more or less slipped into obscurity in the late 1990s as new players took over the computer hardware field, offering more flexible and cheaper solutions.

Brother Tops PC Magazine’s Best Printer Award Brother has become the best printer of the year, according to readers of PC Mag. The edition notes that the printer has been winning consistently its Reader’s Choice award in the last ten years. It’s also ahead of other brands in the business segment, namely Xerox and Epson, with an overall score of 8.5 out of 10. Samsung ranked second, with a score of 8.3 but since that was the same score as last year’s, PC Mag shunned the company when it came to awards. In terms of score improvement from last year, Brother came in first again, followed by Dell, which last year had an overall score of 7.6 but this year achieved 7.9 out of 10. Printers ar ranked in terms of ease of use, need for maintenance and repairs, and likelihood to be recommended to other people, among other criteria. In terms of need for repairs, Xerox did better this year than last, unlike Lexmark, which had more users needing repairs this year than last.

Canon’s Selphy CP1200 – Small but Slow Acquisitions Help Canon Stay Afloat Acquisitions made in the past years are helping Canon stay in the black, despite plunging demand for laser printers and digital cameras. Canon Tokki, for example, which became part of the company in 2007, manufactures vacuum deposition equipment, which is used in the production of organic luminescent displays. The equipment is used by Samsung, the king of organic LED displays, and Apple is also interested. Toshiba Medical Systems is another new part of the imaging giant that is holding a lot of promise. The medical arm of rival Toshiba has been posting stable and impressive profits and is expected to significantly boost Canon’s bottom line as early as next year. All in all, analysts estimate that thanks to these and other acquisitions, Canon will post a profit of 202.3 billion yen next year, 12% more than the result that the company has projected for 2016.

Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certification committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide. First released in March 2016, the Pro M452/477 series of color laser printers are based on a 28ppm black & color, 600 Dpi engine. (38,400 x 600 DPI enhanced DPI). The first page out is stated at under 9.0 seconds. Standard installed memory is 256MB NAND Flash with 128MB DRAM up to 256MB NAND Flash with 256MB Dram depending on the model. New cartridges do not come with a drum cover. They use a new type of box insert to protect the cartridge. It’s a good idea to have your customers save these inserts. See Figure 1

小公司也有大智慧 ——采访北京阳光普达科技发展有限公司经理国旭东 亚洲再生业 孙玉芝 笔者走进位于昌平区南邵镇工业区一小院内,这个院落不 大,但也算整齐空旷。院内有一栋两层的小楼,上层是办公区域, 下层是库房,库房内摆满了各类型号的墨粉产品。不太大的院落, 属一个不太大的公司。 迎面走来一位微胖的青年人,笑容可掬,他就是北京阳光 普达科技有限公司的经理国旭东。 我们非常友好地交谈了起来。国经理虽然一脸憨厚的笑容, 却透露出一种做事有信念、困境中有坚守,充满着正能量的精 气神。当笔者问到“当前耗材行业不太景气的时候,您是如何 打算在这个行业继续做下去?”的时候,国经理非常坚定地说: 要想在这个行业站住脚,就要善待自己,与大公司合作,还要 做精自己,在产业链中做一颗有价值的螺钉。 善待自己

久发展之策。成功没有捷径可走,只有善待自己,做正直的人, 赢得客户认可,才能实现你在行业中的真实价值。 与大公司合作 俗语:近朱者赤。小公司在生意场中应多找大公司接触合作, 大公司的帮助有助于小公司成长。 大公司一般都有质量稳定的产品和良好的售后服务,所以 选择大公司作为供应商也省去很多的售后成本,也容易挣到钱。 另一方面,大公司一般也有成熟的技术培训机制,小公司与大 公司合作可以提前得到技术上的指导,避免后续工作出现差错。 由北京莱盛高新技术有限公司主导的北京耗材联盟组织的 各项市场分析会,国经理都会积极参加,不管是技术培训,还 是市场分析会,都让国经理有受益匪浅。 莱盛公司副总经理杜海泳在某次会议中谈到:“有一次,

几年的创业,有收获也有教训,挣到钱也丢过单,生意中 的种种酸甜苦辣让他体会到:在耗材行业生意圈内,大家交流 互聚,目的是多识客户,目标是生意兴旺,但其实这些不重要。 重要的是,在耗材的产业链中,你不管处于哪一个发展阶段, 都要善待自己,实现自我价值,让客户认可,这也是做生意的 重点所在。 善待自己,就要做正直的人。正直不同于诚实,诚实是告 诉别人真相,而正直是告诉自己真相。 正直,在价格战泛滥的耗材行业内里尤显珍贵。HP 12A 粉合理价格是 38 元 / 公斤,有的企业却卖到 32 元 / 公斤;有 的公司网上卖硒鼓,价格可低至 19.8 元 / 支,而正常的工厂成 本价应该在 28 元 / 支左右。这种低于成本的定价是不正当的竞 争,任何事情是有低线的,突破了这个低线,为了降低最后 1 元钱,将导致退货率、起诉率 10 倍的增长,这会成为压倒骆 驼的最后一根稻草。现在耗材行业很难挣钱,就是由于像这样 自己折腾自己造成的。走各种“捷径”让自己获得一些眼前利益, 长远来看却让产品竞争无力,也没有利润可得。虽挣到了小钱, 却丢掉了正直,搅乱了市场,也使原先忠诚的客户大量流失。 事实证明,在产品中打价格战是不赢利的,也不是公司长

的公司合作,因为心里踏实且有钱可挣。 因此,国经理认为,在当前的形势下,要与大公司合作, 与外围深度合作才会有发展前景,这也是小公司的生存之本。 做好自己 想与大公司合作,前提是要做好自己,审视自己的定位。 国经理说:“我做墨粉的代理,以前做散粉,现在做精加工, 同时也做瓶装粉、袋装粉,做自己品牌。去年又增加了复印机 粉业务,因为兼容粉增长很快。我们实时跟踪客户的需求,确 保产品质量。” 国经理认为,产品质量和忠诚客户是第一位,要实现目标 则需要脚踏实地一步一个脚印走。世上没有捷径小道,不要有 投机心理,妄想一夜爆富。 国经理还表示,现在是行业大整合的时期,行业内的兼并 和收购屡见不鲜。当某天大公司需要你的时候,做好准备了么? 你凭什么是大公司的首选? 采访结束了。眼前的年轻人虽然经营着一个不太大的公司, 但笔者认为:公司虽小,但只要管理者有大智慧,有奋斗目标, 就会有发展成功的一天。
