PUBLISHER'S MESSAGE AUGUST 2016

Dear readers, The capitalized economy in China has allowed businesses to expand with exponential growth at an unprecedented rate. Examples of this rapid expansion are reflected in a multitude of companies such as Apex Technology Co., Inc., Hubei Dinglong Chemical Co., Ltd. and Suzhou Goldengreen Technologies, Ltd. Speaking of Hubei Dinglong Chemical Co., Ltd., it was recently announced that it will be changing its name to Hubei Dinglong Co., Ltd. (stock #: 300054) in order to reflect its more diversified business portfolios due to its recent extensive acquisitions. Additionally, it was recently announced that Hubei Dinglong has entered into another strategic alliance with China Integrated Circuits and Parts of Industrial Technology. With respect to APEX, breaking news is that APEX Technology Co., Ltd., along with PAG Asia Capital and Legend Capital Management Co., Ltd., has recently completed its merger agreement to acquire Lexmark. The transaction is to be completed by the second half of 2016. And let’s not forget Suzho Goldengreen Technologies, Ltd. Its IPO has been approved and it is ready to distribute 3000 shares, 25% of the total, to the public on August 2nd. Again, the industry has reflected versatile growth under the Chinese capital economy. However, at the same time, we may also wonder about its potential impact on the survival of small- and medium-sized companies. Will these companies' long term goals be to build a long-lasting international empire that will dominate not only their industry, but the global economy as a whole? I guess we will have to wait and see. As one last thought, summer is unusually hot this year and the world is acting crazy, with so much violence occurring around many parts of the globe. It is difficult to understand or make any sense of it. Still, I hope that you will take the time to try to find a cool spot to sit and steal a peaceful moment on summer day to read this interesting issue we have worked so diligently on to compile for you.

What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures By Malcolm Gladwell

RECOMMENDED

READING

What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard-but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century? Here is the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling inventions of the pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and "hindsight bias" and why it was that everyone in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate. "Good writing," Gladwell says in his preface, "does not succeed or fail on the strength of its ability to persuade. It succeeds or fails on the strength of its ability to engage you, to make you think, to give you a glimpse into someone else's head." What the Dog Saw is yet another example of the buoyant spirit and unflagging curiosity that have made Malcolm Gladwell our most brilliant investigator of the hidden extraordinary.

TRANSFORMING FROM A SMALL PLAYER INTO A BIG ONE

The Success Story of

POINTROLE by

SUNNY SUN

SUcceSS comeS from Where YoU Are The city of Wuhan is embedded in the beautiful landscape of southern China, crowned as “A Jewel of the Earth”. This can be easily transferred to the toner industry: the city is home to more than 10 well-known toner factories, supplying one-third of the toner in the whole country, and attracting both OEMs and aftermarket consumables makers with its resellers or distributors. Wuhan Pointrole Technology Co., Ltd (Pointrole) is one of the best-known successful enterprises in Wuhan that has become one of the “jewels” in the region. Pointrole was set up in 2003 as Wuhan Pointrole Information Technology Co., Ltd. with fewer than 10 employees. by 2014, the company had grown enough to find a place in the first group of successfully launched “New Third board” or NEEQ. What is the journey like from a small company to one playing an influential role in the industry? DAre to DreAm Big, PrePAre for the JoUrNeY Pointrole began as a small company only selling toner powder. Mr. Wang Linan, the chairman of the company wished in the ‘90s that he had a team of researchers to develop its own high-quality products to change the market that was filled with poor quality goods. In September 2003, they purchased a state-owned enterprise. Remembering the past of Pointrole, Mr. Wang gets emotional. He says those were tough days when there was only one production line with 80 tons production capacity, less than 10 employees, no intellectual property, no technology, out-dated equipment, and unstable product quality, all leading to lots of returned purchased items. This continued until 2005, when Pointrole developed its own R&D department, purchased research equipment, hired high tech research personnel, and struck alliances with research institutes from several universities, to develop new quality products. It was only then that the market started to open up for the company. From then on, the growth came naturally. In 2010, Pintrole was awarded the title of “New high-tech enterprise at the State level.” In 2011, Pointrole partnered with Marubeni from Japan to set up baohong—a company for the production of color toner. In 2012, bao Ling was founded as a subsidiary of Pointrole, to focus on toner resin, an important component of making quality toner products. In 2013, Pointrole restructured and Pointrole Technology Company Limited was founded. In 2014, Pointrole entered the “new third board.” Over these ten years of development Pointrole has changed: it has become bigger and better. The company currently

resides in a local industry park, with its facilities spanning 19,630 square meters and including three toner production lines from Toshiba, Japan, one Alpine toner production line from Germany, and three self-developed toner production lines. It has 30 plus technologies with national patents and six leading technology patents at the international level, and more than 100 matured products on the market. These products are applied to a variety of laser printer models, copiers, and multi-functional devices, and distributed to 28 countries/regions around the globe. Mr. Wang proudly remarks, “Pointrole is no longer the small company of 10 employees. We are stepping up to the plate to make the company a much better place”. BecomiNg A PUBlic trADeD comPANY iS JUSt the BegiNNiNg of the JoUrNeY Pointrole has made a tremendous effort to become one of the first group of companies in Hanyan region to enter the “new third board”. It is a honor for a small company to have grown so much so fast. As noted by Mr. Wang, there are various reasons for companies to go public: some want to get more formalized; some want to grow faster; some want to raise capital; some want to add one more card to its profile. For Pointrole, going public is just the start of a long journey. “Our future,” says Mr. Wang, “is to focus on toner production by adding more advanced equipment and more innovation to play a leading role in the industry, providing the best quality products and be the top sellers in the marketplace; as well as to grow upstream in the industry by building a stable raw material production base, and also to grow downstream by improving brand-building and e-commerce development, and diversifying the product lines.” Now that it has become part of the fast-changing capital market, Pintrole hasn’t loosened up its structural priorities. One is to actively push for an equity-based incentive plan, envisaging executives and core staff becoming shareholders; and the other is to introduce new investors and form strategic partnerships. by issuing new stock, the company has successfully raised $20 million thus far to secure funding for its further development. Faced with capital market fluctuations, Pintrole feels it is the company’s R&D and product performance where its true value lies. According to Mr. Wang, the company will continue to focus on realizing its full potential, aiming to create a comprehensive industry chain, utilizings strategic alliances to improve its competitiveness and profitability, and generate a good return for investors.

emBrAce comPetitioN, AvoiD SlUggiShNeSS In today’s toner market in China, there are numerous production facilities, many of them small-scaled, with intense competition. “In such a market environment,” Mr. Wang says, “one should never dare to let down their guard, and,” he adds, “although we have the strong technical development capacity that gives us a competitive advantage, we risk losing market share and facing a decline in our profits if we cannot keep up with new innovative products, scale up production capacity, promote our products effectively and create more sales channels in this fierce market competition. Pointrole has already 80 kinds of toner products on the market that can apply to 10 different brands of laser printers, digital copier, and analog copier. The company has also been ISO9001-2000 certified. Quality is the key, and only survival kit the business can’t afford to lose. The most representative products of Pointrole are the AR series and LJ series, which represent the company’s printer toner and copier toner products. The LJ series toner is mainly used in brother and Lenovo printers, while the AR series is used in Ricoh, Sharp, Toshiba copiers as well as other brands. baotelong, for its part, produces polyester resin, with a stable performance and environmentally friendly product, awarded gobal certification such as REACH, MSDS, ROHS, and AMES, and sold across the globe. BUilDiNg AN iNDUStrY chAiN, SettiNg the BAr high To build an industry chain of consumables is an ultimate goal for many enterprises, as seen recently with the mergers and acquisitions in the printing consumables industry. In the toner and associated fields, demand in China is growing at an annual rate of 20%, which means a robust growth potential. These are the market fundamentals in which Pointrole operates, and with its new third board listing, it now has the financial means to build an industry chain in the printing field. It is a chaos in the printing consumables market in China, due to its lack of standardized management, overall poor product quality and low-pricing practices that are ruining the market order and affecting the industry’s healthy development. Pointrole hopes more consumables will be made in China, with stronger collaboration between research and development institutions and domestic enterprises, to produce unique China featured toner products, and to avoid blind market competition. Pointrole’s own recent technical innovation—“high-speed, low carbon green powder”—is favored by customers both at home and abroad. High-speed toner has been a priority R&D area for Pointrole in recent years. When talking about Pointrole’s long-term development target, Mr. Wang says that within the next 3-5 years, Pointrole is to become the largest toner manufacturing base in central China, and to form a toner manufacturing industry chain. In upstream development, the priorities are stabilizing raw material suppliers cooperation and collaborating on a toner resin production base. In downstream, our goals are to manufacture brand products, design finished toner consumables production lines by using our strong technical capacity, via 1+N model to streamline toner productions among the small and medium toner factories, to adopt a one-stop solution by implementing purchasing management, R&D management,

148th Issue - August 2016 production management, quality control management, sale and distribution management, and to reach our target of 8,000 tons production per year. Over the last 10 years, we have taken a big step from being a small company to becoming a large corporation. In the next 10 years, Pointole’s aim is to build an industry chain of toner manufacturing. Going public is just the beginning of the long successful journey we will hopefully witness in the years to come.

New Third Board

O

ver the past 30 years, fast growing China has produced many entrepreneurs and thriving enterprises. Pointrole is one of the many success stories. Within less than 10 years of hard work and dedication to its cause, Pointrole has transformed itself from a small private company to a big public brand. A celebratory note to Pointrole is its recent successful launch of the “New Third Board”. Here is an explanation of the “New Third Board”. The third board market, initially known as the share transfer system, officially opened on July 16th, 2001. At the time, the “New Third Board” market referred to the pilot project whereby unlisted joint stock limited companies in Zhongguancun Science Park entered the share transfer system to carry out transfers. In 2012, expansion of the New Third Board was approved by the State Council. To the original pilot Zhongguancun Science Park were added the Shanghai Zhangjiang Hightech Industrial Development Zone, East Lake High-tech Zone and Tianjin Binhai Hi-tech Industrial Development Park. On October 11th, 2012, the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) formally issued Measures for the Regulation of Unlisted Public Companies, which were followed by a series of complementary measures, or new regulations. On January 16th, 2013, the National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQ, or New Third Board) was established. On May 6th, 2013, Premier Li Keqiang presided over an executive meeting of the State Council, where it was announced that a plan to expand the scope of the NEEQ pilot project was to be issued. According to reports, the CSRC is currently studying the formulation of a specific plan to expand the New Third Board pilot project to the entire country. Construction of the new technical system will be completed by around November this year, and after connection testing and simulated transactions will formally come online before the end of the year. At that time, in addition to such functions as share quotes, transfers, targeted financing, etc., the NEEQ will permit the transaction of such new products as bonds. The New Third Board has the following advantages: As the objective of the New Third Board is to foster new small- and medium-sized enterprises, the listing threshold is low. No financial targets are set in the listing conditions, it does not require “prominence in main business”, and companies are not restricted to high-tech firms.

Lexmark Shareholders Approve Merger Agreement Lexmark Inter national, Inc. announced that its shareholders have approved the definitive merger agreement under which Lexmark is to be acquired by a consortium of investors led by Apex Technology Co., Ltd. and PAG Asia Capital and including Legend Capital Management Co., Ltd. Upon completion of the transaction, Lexmark shareholders will receive$40.50 per share in cash. 70% of the outstanding Lexmark shares were voted at the special shareholder meeting held. Of the Lexmark shares that were voted, 99% were voted in favor of the merger. The transaction remains subject to certain regulatory approvals, including among others the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., and other customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to be completed in the second half of 2016.

China at the Forefront of Tech Innovation 3D printing is blooming in China but it’s by no means the only innovative technology that the Asian nation is focusing on. Let’s take public transport and traffic jams for example. Jams in China are notorious, so the authorities in the eastern city of Qinhuangdao are planning to introduce a new form of public transport: a straddling bus, which, as the name suggests, straddles two lanes, allowing smaller vehicles to move freely underneath it. The bus will carry 1,400 passengers and travel at 60 km/h. Among other innovations are smart cities – China is estimated by Navigant Research to take a substantial portion of the smart city market, which the market research company estimates will be worth $174.4 billion in seven years. Projects in this area are already under way, including urban-sensor networks that will be used to manage traffic and monitor air quality, among multiple other purposes.

Pantum to Build Household Name in Printing Industry: HUAWEI

H

uawei and Pantum: one is a giant in telecom, the other is a pioneer in the laser printing. These two do not seem to be related, however, they are both innovative companies, upholding the same principle of fiercely focusing on innovative technology, IP, quality products and brand development. Two different companies but with the same strategic vision. A patriotic burst of passion often ends up with a one-day debate and a big decision: Let’s just do it! As Huawei once said, if a product is developed without its original makers, the company developing it is built on sand, without foundation. This statement made Jackson Wang think his company has to have its own brand and patented products. It was now or never. In 2008, when Jackson Wang was back from a printing industry event, where he saw branded products from Japan, Korea, US, and Europe, but none from China, he became determined that he was going to build an original Chinese printer. There was a tremendous risk in taking on this task, due to the state of the printing market (no free corners) and China’s technology limitations at the time. However, he felt his company had the team and the know-how to get the patents it needed. From that time, Jackson remembers one senior staff member, about to retire, who came forward with a request to be part of the force to develop the first printer that was to be made in China, a national pride and patriotic act that marked the start of this journey. The birTh of a naTional branded prinTer: panTum It took one day for Jackson to make a decision and two days to put together a dedicated tech team to start this daunting task. Their printer would break the foreign companies’ dominance of the local market. He set one goal for the team: to build a printer with its own patented technology. As we all know, patents are a major roadblock to new entrants on the Chinese printer market. But after getting its own hundred patents, Pantum was eligible to receive patent authorization via an exchange deal that allowed them to obtain the core technology. In 2010, after 700 hundred hours non-stop working, day and night, the first Pantum printer was born. Jackson described that day as “the happiest day of my life; the feeling was the same as when you welcome a newborn baby into the world.” rock The boaT, Then down To The die-hearT fighT To survive Just like Huawei, when it started growing its market share, Pantum faced ferocious competition from OEMs. When Pantum entered the market, the OEMs lowered their prices by as much as 30%, aiming to kill the Pantum printer in its infancy. The fight for continuous growth was on. Huawei has attributed its success to its core technology, and Pantum had the

16

www.rechargeasia.com

same idea of winning the battle by building a strong portfolio of key technology patents. As of now, Pantum has about 1,000 patents and 10,000 authorized patents that it can apply to its production. Pantum’s printers focus on end-users’ demand for “fast, small, easy, and cost-efficient”. In 2015, Pantum boasted a 33% market share among government institutions and agencies, including the police, the army, banks and other financial institutions, and social welfare agencies. looking forward To The fuTure Huawei did not strike success overnight; the journey was long— ten, even 20 years. Pantum aims to become a top player in its field and it understands this won’t happen quickly. It has already achieved a number three spot on the Chinese market, by continuously innovating its products, and it is on course to build an empire in the printing industry. Pantum printers now feature single function and multi-function, high speed in two-sided printing, Internet connection and Wi Fi connectivity. These functionalities meet some 80% of customer needs. Pantum is actively engaged in developing A3 digital copier and color printers. The first A3 M9000DN digital copier, Pro-series, will be rolled out to the market this year. Like Huawei, there is no secret recipe, every company can duplicate its successes by focusing on its core products, technology, and innovation. The opportunities will always be there for anyone to grasp. Says Wang, “We have marched into success by becoming #3 in China’s marketplace, and we are confident our continuous growth will be even more robust in the future.”

The company churns out more than 40 successful projects on an average, every year. Catering to a wide variety of market demands, Print-Rite New Materials bridges China’s gap in the inkjet field.

A Short Guide to AirPrint Apple’s AirPrint service offers the opportunity to print wirelessly from any Apple mobile device onto any compatible printer. Tech Times has compiled a short guide for using the service based on information supplied by Apple. Initiating the printer job starts with finding the appropriate app and clicking on its share or settings icon. Apple warns that not all apps have a print function, though. After tapping the “print” icon, the user can select the printer they want to use. A list of AirPrint compatible printers is supplied by Apple. The user needs to make sure, however, that both their mobile device and the printer are connected to the same network. After that, they just need to choose how many copies they want and tap “Print” Canceling a printing job is also easy: the user simply has to tap the “Home” button, go to the Print Center and cancel the printing from there. Errors could be experienced if the mobile device is not running the latest version of iOS and/or if the printing app has not been updated, although another reason could be a non-updated printer.

Singapore Copier Supplier Extends Offering Times are tough for copier sellers, so some of them are coming up with fresh ideas to push their products. Singapore copier retailer ML Solutions has decided to go for an extension of its offering by launching customized package deals to its customers. The focus of the company, which has been selling Canon photocopiers for the last ten years, is on small and medium businesses. It now offers the options of renting a machine, leasing it, or buying it. LM Solutions has already partnered with leasing companies to this end and is offering competitive prices.

3D Printing at Cybersecurity Risk Cybersecurity is a concern for a lot of industries and 3D printing is no exception. The technology has a huge gamechanging potential and this could make it a target of cyber attacks. Researchers have revealed that there are two main aspects of 3D printing that could become the target of an attack: orientation and deliberate insertion of defects. The orientation of the printed item during printing is essential for its strength, so a deliberate re-orientation could compromise this strength by as much as 25%. The insertion of defects speaks for itself. The researchers warn that the growing reliance on cloud services and remote printing heightens the risks. The 3D printing market is set to grow fourfold over the next four years, from $4 billion this year.

Dubai Moves Closer to Becoming Global 3D Printing Hub Dubai has moved a step closer to achieving its stated goal of becoming the world’s 3D printing hub by 2030. The emirate has devised a 3D Printing Strategy to that end, with a triple focus on construction, medical, and consumer products. For now, the greatest progress has been made in the construction field: two months ago, the first 3D printed office building in the world opened doors in Dubai. Building it took 17 days and then installation took two more. Plans are to have a quarter of the buildings in the city-state 3D printed. The benefits of 3D printing for the construction industry are numerous, people involved in the initiative note: less waste, less workforce and shorter construction times.

First 3D Printed Quake-Proof House Built in China A Chinese company has announced it has produced an earthquake-proof house using 3D printing technology. Beijing-based HuaShang printed the building on site, using a standard building material, Class C30 concrete. The process took 45 days. Thus far, 3D printed buildings were not entirely 3D printed: their elements were completed using the tech and then assembled on site. The house is a two-story building and it has all the usual fixings, including plumbing and rebar frame, and it used 20 tons of concrete. With a floor area of 400 meters,

the house’s walls are 25 cm thick and can withstand an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 on the Richter scale. HuaSing developed its own printer and modeling software and told media that the technology can be scaled for use in high-rise buildings as well.

3D Printer Helps Scientists Scale up Nanostructures BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Nanostructures are prized for their seemingly infinite material qualities, whether mechanical, chemical, electrical or optical. But scientists have struggled to scale up promising nanostructures without sacrificing their uniformity and the qualities that made them desirable in the first place. Researchers at Virginia Tech believe they've begun to solve this problem by developing a technique for scaling up nanostructure materials using a 3D printer. The new printing process creates multi-leveled hierarchical lattices with nanoscale features. The metallic nanostructured materials maintain their impressive strength, while gaining improved flexibility and elasticity. Multileveled hierarchical structures describe structural patterns that are mirrored at various scales within a single material. "Creating 3D hierarchical micro features across the entire seven orders of magnitude in structural bandwidth in products is unprecedented," lead researcher Xiaoyu "Rayne" Zheng, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech, said in a news release. "Assembling nanoscale features into billets of materials through multi-leveled 3D architectures, you begin to see a variety of programmed mechanical properties such as minimal weight, maximum strength and super elasticity at centimeter scales." Researchers believe their printing process can yield materials with applications in the aerospace, military and automotive industries. "The increased elasticity and flexibility obtained through the new process and design come without incorporating soft polymers, thereby making the metallic materials suitable as flexible sensors and electronics in harsh environments, where chemical and temperature resistance are required," Zheng said. The new printing process also increased the surface area

of nanosctructures within the multi-leveled hierarchical lattice, thereby amplifying optical and electrical properties.

Australia Scientists 3D Print Superconductive Metal A team of Australian scientists have successfully 3D printed a microwave cavity using a superconductive aluminumbased alloy. Superconductivity – zero electrical resistance – is a major area of interest for physicists, especially quantum physicists and is essential in particle accelerators, also a hot topic in the science field. The team utilized selective laser sintering and discovered that the conductivity of metals depends on the size of the grain of the initial material. The grain size can affect superconductivity one way or the other by increasing or decreasing the critical temperatures at which superconductivity is reached. They concluded that the smaller the grain size of the initial material, the easier it is to 3D print a superconductive item.

and 3D printing hub in Spain, in Sant Cugat. The center, already producing some 150 patents a year, will receive funding of 60 million euro a year for further research and development. The center employs 1,700 people and plans are to raise the number of patents they register to 200 a year.

Evonik Joins HP’s Open Platform Evonik, the German materials developer, has joined the open platform initiative about materials to be used with its Multi Jet Fusion 3D printer. The German firm has already started work on powders that could help HP realize the game-changing potential of the MJF technology. HP has been smart in not going for proprietary printing material, like many in the 3D printing field. Instead, it has bet on open sourcing, providing all necessary information to third-party developers to customize printing materials to suit specific needs.

Ricoh Launches Novel Metal 3D Printer Alcoa Opens 3D Printing Metal Powder Production Center Alcoa will produce metal powders for the 3D printing industry at its Technology Center, the biggest light metals research facility globally. The focus of the new unit will be on materials used in the 3D printing of high-performance components. It’s part of a $60-million investment project focusing on advanced 3D printing materials and will be transferred to Arconic, after it gets spun off from the company’s commodity business in the second half of this year. Alcoa is not just working on materials, either. Right now, it’s also developing additive manufacturing techniques, the latest among them Ampliforge, which is actually a hybrid between traditional manufacturing and 3D printing, which involves the near-production of an item via 3D printing and then finishing with a traditional manufacturing method such as forging. According to Alcoa, this hybrid method enhances the properties of the item, especially its toughness and strength.

HP Expands Spanish 3D Printing Hub HP Inc. has announced it will expand its large-format

Japanese printing major Ricoh has just unveiled a novel 3D printer that combines the best of metal 3D printing and injection molding. Riding the wave of metal 3D printing, which is all the rage these days, and injection molding, which is equally popular though not new, Ricoh’s new machine is based on the selective laser sintering method that binds the metal particles with resin, rather than using a laser. The printer effectively coats the printable item with a nanolayer of resin, which is then followed by a coat of ink and the item is then placed in a sintering furnace for the final blending of the particles making up the item. The company has not detailed the specific purposes that the 3D printer will be used for but it certainly holds promise in an industry that’s getting more and more interested in metal printing.

extensive fine-tuning of the image. The latest upgrade also features a preview option that allows users to evaluate their work before finalizing it. Perhaps the most important new addition, however, is the new non-manifold assembly algorithm, which lets users combine different parts of a model more easily than before in instances such as implant modeling, when the structure involves bone tissue and implant.

i.Materialise Lists Top 10 3D Sculpting Programs 3D printing service provider i.Materialise has compiled a list of the ten best 3D sculpting programs that can turn anyone’s vision into a digital reality before having it 3D printed. First among them is ZBrush, which i.Materialise notes as the best digital sculpting program for both hobbyists and professionals alike, with an extensive sculpting tool lineup. Despite a steep learning curve and a hefty price tag of $795, ZBrush is worth it. Next comes Autodesk’s Mudbox and while it’s pretty similar in capabilities to ZBrush, it is easier to use by beginners and it costs $10 a month to use. Third from the top is Meshmixer, a freebie app from Autodesk again, even more beginnerfriendly than Mudbox and ZBrush. Then comes 3D Coat, whose best features are its great texturing, UV mapping, and its range of painting tools. The license suits for 3D Coat range from $99 and $279.

intuitive tools that make sculpting that much easier. At number 9, we get Maya, which has extensive sculpting capabilities and a whole new set of brushes. Like Cinema 4D and MODO, it’s part of a larger package and for many prohibitively expensive if you don’t already have the package. Finally, there’s another free app for 3D sculpting – SculptGL. It’s probably the best option for complete beginners who don’t want to spend any money on this sort of software before they spend some time messing around with designs.

Sculpteo Releases Feedback on Carbon’s Prototyping Acrylate Resin French 3D printing service provider Sculpteo has been experimenting with Carbon’s CLIP 3D printer M1 and its range of printing materials. It looks like the most versatile to date will turn out to be the prototype Acrylate resin. As the name suggests, it’s perfect for prototyping, featuring properties very similar to these of injection-molded items. The material can be used to create smooth objects with a solid infill and, theoretically, even moving parts, although that would depend on the model. Besides versatility, the Prototype Acrylate also comes in several colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, black, white, and gray. These can also be mixed to create other colors. Sculpteo’s final conclusion is that the prototype Acrylate resin can be used for very fast prototyping of items with above-average detail fidelity.

Fifth from the top is another free sculpting app, Sculptris. It’s available from the same company that markets ZBrush, Pixologic. It can be used by complete beginners and this is reflected in its lower functionality compared with ZBrush. Yet, it’s good for base models that can then be fine-tuned with ZBrush.

Sculpteo Identifies 3D Printing “Power Users”

The rest of the lineup to 10 are modeling programs with sculpting capabilities, such as Blender, which is a popular choice among 3D print designers, and Cinema 4D, whose sculpting feature includes multi-resolution sculpting and an extensive range of painting tools. University of Passau Researcher Makes 3D Printed Smart Eyeglasses A professor from the Ger man university of Passau has designed smart eyeglasses that can count how many calories you eat and where you get them from. The glasses utilize electromyography, a method that measures the electrical activity generated by muscles. More specifically, the glasses register how hard your jaw muscles are working while you chew. The measurements are taken by a host of miniature sensors, placed on the handles of the glasses. While the measurements are not perfect for foods with similar consistency, they are pretty good at measuring how many calories you get from a banana or from a celery stick. The prototype is part of the WISEglass project, whose aim is to design regular eyeglasses that are equipped with technology that can register different activities per formed by the wearer and warn them it’s time to stop doing one of these activities, such as staring at a computer screen for hours on end in the night, compromising their sleep.

MPS is the Future of Printing Printer sales are steadily declining and the idea of the paperless office is gaining traction. In the consumer segment, people are increasingly using their mobile devices for printing whatever they need to print whenever they need to print it. But there is one hope for printer makers and that’s managed print services. Unlike the market for printers, the one of managed print services is growing. According to a survey by IDC, the MPS market in Western Europe is growing thanks to a cost-cutting drive plus an improvement in ef ficiency and productivity. The market will continue to grow thanks in large part to small businesses, according to the managing director of Brother UK, Phil Jones. The reason SMBs will be spearheading the MPS market development is that to date they are mostly unaware of the benefits this could have for them in terms of cost savings. MPS providers offer an extensive range of services, including cloud storage and printing, pre-print audits, and device design and optimization plus maintenance. As a result, MPS will gradually displace traditional printer makers from the top spot, unless, of course, they transform into more serviceoriented providers, which many of them are doing. The printer maker market is in for a major consolidation, so in the future there will be fewer players in that field, according to Jones. Printing and IT services will become increasingly intermingled, and eventually print services will become just a part of a wider IT and document management service offering.

Canon Solutions America Examines Impact of G7 Process Control for Commercial Printers In the graphics market there is an expectation of consistency and repeatability of output, regardless of where and when the job is printed or which print technology is used. However, this can often be a challenge for commercial printers with an array of devices being operated by employees of varying skill levels. To help ensure accurate and predictable color printing — and meet growing customer demand — more and more commercial printers are looking to implement quality and process controls, such as G7 Process Control, into their operations.

The Importance of G7 Certification Varies Depending on Customer Type

Canon Solutions America, a subsidiary of Canon U.S.A., explains how G7 Process Control helps commercial printers ensure consistency and repeatability of output across a gamut of printing devices and substrates, and better position themselves to meet the printing needs of large corporate businesses.

What G7 Certification Means for Commercial Printers

While print quality is important to all customers, the value of G7 certification can vary depending on the size and type of company outsourcing the print job. A recent study from the Print Industries Market Information and Research Organization (PRIMIR) found that the requirement for color certification and quality assurance when selecting a wide-format signage and graphics supplier increases with buyers’ company size.

Customers outsourcing their print needs want the output to look the same every time. Unfortunately, there are a number of factors that can significantly impact the color quality of that output, including printer type, the raster image processor (RIP) used, the type of ink and substrate material, as well as the skill level of the print operator. That’s why the G7 process control was created.

According to the PRIMIR survey, 90% of respondents with 500 or more employees reported that they look for a color certification or some other assurance of quality when selecting a wideformat signage and graphics supplier. This compares to only 48% for companies with less than 100 employees and 75% for companies with between 100 and 500 employees.

With certification available for print facilities, operators, system manufacturers, and software systems, G7 helps guarantee that print operators have the expertise in the field of color management, established processes and quality control for proofing and printing. This certification helps to deliver repeatable, predictable results and that the software system has the ability to calibrate a printing device to meet the G7 grayscale definition using four 1-D Curves and its ability to operate a consistent G7-managed workflow. G7 allows print providers to deliver the highest possible color match with less preparation and waste, ultimately providing a higher quality product at a lower cost. While you can still produce quality work without being G7 certified, G7 certification provides a set method and specification to produce consistent, high-quality results. And that assurance of quality and predictability can be critical for many customers looking to outsource their print needs.

HP Australia Launches New DesignJet Models with Chromatic Red Ink 28

www.rechargeasia.com

Many corporations have strict corporate policies around the colors used for their brand. Whether it’s fashion retailers printing banners and counter cards with specific colors to promote a new line of clothing or companies with logos that are a particular Pantone, it is critical that all print jobs have the desired color — regardless of where the job is printed, how often a job is repeated, who is doing the printing and what technology and substrates are used.

However, of the wide-format print service providers surveyed, only 21% reported that they are G7 certified or have some other color certification. As a result, commercial printers who are G7 certified are better positioned to serve those customers, especially large corporate accounts, who require quality assurance certification.

Partnering with the Right Vendor With G7 certification comes the expectation to provide your customers consistent, high-quality color print jobs. But not every workflow is up to the task of G7 certification. As a result, commercial printers who are G7 certified, or who are looking to become certified, should partner with a print solution provider who understands the process, the challenges and your equipment needs. By selecting a vendor who is G7 certified, not only can they help provide you with the necessary printing equipment, but they can also provide consultation and support to help you within the workflow and assist you in the proper use and operation of the system.

HP Australia recently launched two new models from the DesignJet series, both featuring the company’s chromatic red ink. The Z5600 and Z2600 are equipped with HP’s six-ink printing system, which, the company says, guarantees 20% lower ink consumption. The red chromatic ink enhances the “color gamut” of the system, HP says, adding that the color

system ensures bright, vivid colors and fast printing speeds, up to 39% faster than the average. The two models are best suited for the needs of large businesses, print shops and retailers.

CONVERSATION

corner

Editor’s note: The goal of my Conversation Corner column is to inspire and to inform. I try to engage those working on the front lines in dealing with printing issues and solutions and to serve as a channel for our readers to put their finger on the industry pulse through insight from various companies, large and small. I am fortunate this month to have Ron Hulett sharing with us his industry views and his vast experience, earned by working in the industry for the past 28 years. Below is a recap of our exchange.

Ron Hulett by

How many years have you been in the Office Technology space? I have been in this space for 28 years.

When did you start and how would you define your journey thus far? I started in 1988 as a service technician for a large dealer that was bought by Alcoa Standard, became a Copyrite dealer and ultimately IKON. My journey has been one defined by a lot of hard work and perseverance to make it in this business. My company was started in 1992 by a few of us that had aspirations to do an honest job for people at a fair price. Today we continue that work and our company’s core values and mission statement reflect those still today. It has been a long, challenging road to continue to be relevant to our clients and compete with the manufacturers and very large dealers in our area, but it has been rewarding to watch the business continue to grow and develop into what it is today. We had a dream, a focus, and a commitment to do whatever it took to make it and do what was right. I am proud to say that we have not wavered. We continue to stand behind our people, products, and services and always try to do what is right. Sure we make mistakes, but we will make it right with our customer and make the changes to keep from repeating them. At the core of our business lies an attribute that drives and guides our decisions: integrity. What is the most valuable advice you can share with our readers? Probably the most valuable advice I can share is to never forget that your word is the only thing of value you have to trade on. If your customers know that you are honest with them, and working to solve problems, they will continue to trust that you have their best interests in mind. The other thing would be to surround yourself with good, quality and talented people. Don’t be afraid to let go of control of something if there is someone that can do the job better. The world is changing and continues to change fast, how do you see the industry going? What an exciting time to be in this business! I can’t think of any other time in my tenure in this industry that has brought about more opportunities and challenges. This industry will continue to be a services-led business; what those services are and the

value they represent to the customer continues to morph and change. We have been in a consumption-based market for many years with our traditional cost per page agreements on the copiers, and now printers as well, where we bill the customer based on their consumption of pages. Now, many of us have entered into the Managed IT Services space, and this adjacent market opportunity is a very similar model. Typically, billing is also based on the number of users or seats and the amount of consumption of the tools we provide. Now, enter the “Cloud”, an almost completely consumption-based business model. How information and the application’s interface experience are delivered to the user is shifting from “thick client” premise based systems, to a virtualized environment where the applications are “accessed” rather than “run”. Regardless of how they choose to “move to the cloud”, i.e., public or private, on-premise or hosted, environments are user/consumption based and fit nicely with our recurring revenue model that we have all relied upon for the last 20 some years to provide stability and positive cash flow to fuel our growth. While currently the number of dealers that are really in this Managed Services space is relatively small, I believe that number will start increasing at a fairly rapid pace. I say “really in this space” because I talk to a lot of dealers who say they are providing Managed Services (similar to Managed Print Services), but when you peel the lid back, they don’t quite understand the market and model and are primarily providing fairly simple and very low level IT services around their MFP offerings. The window of the greatest adoption opportunity is closing for dealers to embrace this change. Many other IT support companies are starting to figure it out and changing their model from a break/fix model to a contracted model. Those companies will be tying their clients up in long-term agreements, and that limits the ability to come in and capture the business. You have been the President of BTA. What do you perceive is its core mission? Does it serve as the best possible bridge to connect businesses? The core mission of BTA is and has always been “Dealers Helping Dealers”. This has not changed and continues to be the focus. Since it is a dealer run and led organization, I believe it is the best resource available for dealers to connect with each

CONVERSATION CORNER other, with vendor/supplier partners or prospective partners, and stay up to date with all the latest trends, education opportunities and partnerships in the industry. It’s hard to imagine that an association such as BTA can survive 90 years, let alone remain as the most relevant resource in the industry. I am proud to have served as its President as one of many volunteers who have helped guide the association and, in many ways, the industry and dealer community over these 90 years. Because it is truly run by dealers, the content and intent is in the dealer’s best interest, the benefits are tremendous, and the people are genuine professionals. The members are thought and knowledge leaders, pioneers and a successful group of entrepreneurs. What is the future outlook for the BTA, especially in the face of ever increasing digitalization? BTA will remain true to its mission; of that I am certain. Incredible people like Brent Hoskins, Bob Goldberg, and the many other first rate volunteers who guide the organization will make certain of that. In a time of mass “consumerization” and consolidation, BTA has retained a strong membership of dedicated industry professionals who recognize the tremendous value that BTA offers its members. The association continues to add to its broad list of benefits and the types of education that they provide along with how the information is delivered. Many virtual classroom training opportunities are coming down the pipes and they already host training webinars that have very good attendance. Look for more from them utilizing the tools and technology available. Globalization is an unavoidable trend and, as a result, you likely have seen Chinese producers entering into US market. How do you see this and how should US business owners respond to this? Well, this is an inevitable trend and one I believe that largely the US market has and will continue to embrace. Our businesses have always been in partnership with global companies. The manufacturers are all based in foreign countries and so that really is something we’re used to. In my view, the focus has to be on the benefits that are provided, not on where they are being transported from. We’re not dealing in national security here, so if the products are good quality and price competitive and the supply chains are reliable, I can’t think of a reason that a business person would not take advantage of every opportunity that is before them. Look at Samsung, for example, a Korean organization that has become the largest information technology company in the world (based on 2012 revenues), and they are getting more and more attention and distribution of their print centric products. They certainly didn’t do that without globalization of their products and services and large adoption in the U.S. “Build it and they will come” still stands true today… quality, service, and reliability equals successful distribution. Apex Technology and PAG Asia Capital are in the process of acquiring Lexmark International, Inc. What is your viewpoint of this consolidation? Again, it is part of an inevitable trend that a fairly well known brand is going to be the target of an Asian company acquisition, at least in my opinion. I’m not very smart, but when you consider that the Asian market has been working very hard to penetrate the printing and aftermarket industry here in the U.S. and Europe for several years now and gaining more and more traction from just a few short years ago, it’s only reasonable to conclude that something like the Lexmark acquisition was on the horizon. With Apex Technology being a giant in the imaging aftermarket space and Pantum looking to make a bigger

splash with their print engines, these companies possess the people and knowledge to drive that business forward. Add in the enormous amount of capital behind PAG and Legend (who also has experience in the technology space) and look out, you’ve got a story to tell. Now, couple these assets with the Lexmark name, which has very good brand awareness, and they are positioned to make an impact. To effectively enter US business channels, more Chinese companies may buy US businesses. How do you perceive this process of integration? Have you had any personal experience? While I have had no experience or interaction with Chinese companies aside from a few conversations at some industry events, I imagine that there are some very bright people at the helm of these organizations who are looking to enter the US market. With this Lexmark deal on the table, a successful transition and integration of that organization will provide a lot of insight as to the things that worked and what didn’t I’m sure. I recall from the initial announcement/press release that they planned on maintaining Lexmark’s corporate headquarters in the US. I personally think that is smart and a good move. American companies are much more likely to embrace working with new partners if these organizations don’t come in and gut the existing structure and people of those companies they acquire. People buy from people in my world and largely, I believe, that ethos goes up market as well. I have been involved in situations where our branding was changed (Gestetner to Lanier, for example) from a top down decision. Within weeks, almost everyone that we had a relationship with was gone, and the resulting impact was that our relationship with that organization went with the people and so goes the business. Within a short time we had shifted focus to a different brand and ultimately severed ties due to lack of interest on both parties. I don’t know a great deal about Asian culture to be honest, but Americans like to have a relationship with the people they work with; trust is a vital piece to that relationship and it must be developed. How do you see the upcoming November US election? Will the United States be more open to a free flow of trade or more closed for protection? Oh wow, ouch!! Haha, well that is a moving ball, and I’m afraid I have no idea how to pitch that one. I do know that this is the craziest of times in my life as far as an election and politics go. There is so much unrest and divide in the world, our country and the two major parties, that I wonder if there will be any common ground to work from. Certainly, Mr. Trump has spoken at length about the trading with other countries such as China, and has indicated that there is an imbalance. I don’t pretend to know what those arrangements look like between the two countries and really don’t want to disrespect any of your readers by giving what would be a relatively uninformed opinion. I hate to sound politically correct, as I am not that guy, I am a conservative by political and religious standards. I would suggest that our market is pretty open now, you cannot go into any store, market, mall, etc., and not see products from nearly every country on the planet that has a product to trade. How the future election will impact that trade in terms of short- and long-term affects, I really do not know. I do know that it has gotten a lot of attention on the campaign trail, both with an aggressive approach and a more passive one. At the end of it all, I believe that whoever is elected, will look at this with a mind to insure that the trade is not restrictive and benefits each party involved. There must be common ground and mutual benefits in any trade agreement or the results will have negative impacts.

Remanufacturing the HP CLJ Pro MFP M476 Black and Color Toner Cartridges By Mike Josiah and the Technical Staff at Uninet Imaging

Mike Josiah Mike Josiah is the Technical Director at UniNet’s East Coast office, a global distributor of toner, Smartchips, OPC drums, and other toner remanufacturing components. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certification committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide. The M476 series of color laser printers are based on a 21ppm black and color, 600 Dpi engine. (3600 DPI with RET). The M476 cartridges are an all in one type cartridge that consists of the toner supply, drum, and waste chamber. These cartridges are similar to other recent small to mid-size color toner cartridges from HP in that they are a rectangular shaped cartridge that comes with a toner seal and a snap-on drum cover across the bottom to protect the drum. See Figures 1 & 2. New machines ship with starter cartridges rated for 1200 pages so users will run out of toner fairly quickly.
