Ant Encounters: Interaction Networks and Colony Behavior by Deborah M. Gordon

RECOMMENDED

READING

How do ant colonies get anything done, when no one is in charge? An ant colony operates without a central control or hierarchy, and no ant directs another. Instead, ants decide what to do based on the rate, rhythm, and pattern of individual encounters and interactions--resulting in a dynamic network that coordinates the functions of the colony. "Ant Encounters" provides a revealing and accessible look into ant behavior from this complex systems perspective. Focusing on the moment-to-moment behavior of ant colonies, Deborah Gordon investigates the role of interaction networks in regulating colony behavior and relations among ant colonies. She shows how ant behavior within and between colonies arises from local interactions of individuals, and how interaction networks develop as a colony grows older and larger. The more rapidly ants react to their encounters, the more sensitively the entire colony responds to changing conditions. Gordon explores whether such reactive networks help a colony to survive and reproduce, how natural selection shapes colony networks, and how these structures compare to other analogous complex systems. I hope this book will help understand social behavior in other systems, to face our internet dominated society where decentralized however collective efforts are in a great demand.

Will HP Inc. Make It into 3D Printing? We h a v e b e e n hearing a lot of HP's pending entry into the 3D printing industry. We know it will happen via its 2D printer and PC company, HP Inc, and its very own Multi Jet Fusion printer. HP Inc. is led by Dion Weisler who wasted no time in making sure that everyone knew that 3D printing was going to be a major focus for the new, slimmer company. The new CEO first set up a standalone 3D printing division, and then appointed former senior VP of imaging and printing Steve Nigro to run it. HP Inc. has already introduced a new desktop PC called Sprout that integrates an entire 3D ecosystem into it, and they also developed their very own MultiJet Fusion 3D printer that they hope to make a regular in the office. The full-color 3D printer will reportedly be the fastest highquality commercial 3D printer on the market, and is priced considerably cheaper than their competitors. The MultiJet Fusion technology uses a thermal inkjet array and binding agents to produce what they say are more reliable and precise parts. But the technology is untested, and until the first units start to ship in 2016 there really isn’t much to go on in regards to quality other than their word. And for a tech company, HP hasn’t been very good at making great tech for a very long time. "2016 is going to be a very important year for HP Inc., either because they revolutionized full-color 3D printing, or because they failed spectacularly at revolutionizing fullcolor 3D printing. I have little doubt that in 2016 HP Inc. will make a lot of waves in the 3D printing industry, but if their technology isn’t up to snuff then those waves are going to be caused by a bellyflop," says 3DPrint.com contributor Scott J. Grunewald.

VOJD Partners Up with Akris to Produce Geometric 3D Jewelry for Paris Fashion Week Futuristic Swiss fashion house Akris has teamed up with VOJD Studios recently to produce an interesting line of rings. Akris has always been known for its futuristic and architectural designs. This year, Albert Kriemlier, Akris’ Creative Director, partnered with Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto for his Spring 2016 collection. Meanwhile, VOJD Studios is known for its diverse range of luxury 3D printed jewelry collections, such as electrical currents, DNA coils, and aeronautic engineering. Together, the team created a set of geometric 3D printed rings for Akris’ Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear Collection. They were mainly inspired by Fujimoto’s Naoshima Pavilion, a large polyhedron built from white, stainless steel mesh. This structure is currently on display in Japan as part of Setouchi’s International Art Festival. The rings are made of silver and polyamide pieces and were created by SLS 3D printing technology. They are also the first 3D printed pieces to be featured in Akris’ looks. However, as 3D printing is on the rise, there may be more pieces to make the runway. 3D printing allows for unique wearable products at lower costs with shorter lead times. Designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and Iris Van Herpen have already showcased 3D printed pieces in their lines.

The 7 Major Events in 3D Printing 2015 Last year was a good time for some in 3D printing and a very bad one for others. Some trends continued from the previous year, while others were completely fresh. The Motley Fools has put together a list of the seven major events that marked the year. First among these was the sales slump for the Replicator – the desktop line of Stratasys, made by MakerBot. The slump was attributable to a fault in the extruders on the 2014 edition of the Replicator. Stratasys suffered a significant draw in revenues plus a goodwill impairment on MakerBot of between $436 and $476 million. Another of the key events of the year is also about Stratasys and again regards an impairment charge, this time to its enterprise business. The company announced late in the year that it will need to write off between $730 and $770 million in this department. The second event was rather a trend, and a bad one, especially for Stratasys and 3D Systems. The macroeconomic situation has forced businesses to be more cautious about investing in 3D printers, so a lot of them are biding their time, which has hit printer makers’ sales. 2015 also saw the launch of a new 3D printing technique – the Continuous Liquid Interface Production – developed by a startup called Carbon3D. The technology, like stereolitography, uses liquid resins to create an item, but unlike it CLIP can work with a wider variety of polymers and, according to Carbon3D, makes these items not just much more quickly but also much more reliably. The tech definitely has a respectable disruption potential and is worth watching. Back to the corner of the big guys, last year 3D Systems parted ways with its chief executive Ari Reichental. Reichental had attracted a lot of criticism over the last few years mostly with relation to the shopping spree the company went on, which failed to bring in the returns investors hoped for. One other piece of news that shouldn’t really surprise anyone is that Apple announced its intentions to enter the 3D printing space by filing for a 3D printer patent.

22

www.rechargeasia.com

142th Issue - February 2016

Apparently, the only unique feature of their printer is that it can color an item while it is being printed. Time and Apple’s market research will show how sharp an edge this is. Finally, around the end of 2015 3D Systems announced it is withdrawing from the consumer market. There has been a lot of analysis through the year that this market is not yet ripe enough for 3D printers to become a mainstream technology and it seems 3D Systems has heard the message. It discontinued the production of its Cube, the sole consumer desktop printer it made and said it will focus its attention and resources on initiatives that will bring in profits more quickly.

2016 Could See a 3D Printing Revolution The start of a new year, like the end of an old one, is a traditional time to make predictions about industry trends. 3D printing is no exception: here are the trends and developments to watch for this year. Speed has always been one of the major hurdles for the wider adoption of 3D printing. This year the market may see some ground-breaking new entries on the market, most notably HP’s Multi Jet Fusion printer. But HP is not the only high-profile tech players preparing for a foray into the 3D printing field. Autodesk is also working on a 3D printing, as is Toshiba. There are also hosts of startups eyeing the 3D printing market and they all know that the faster printers they make, the better chance of success they have. Of course, precision is also an important consideration, so it would be interesting to see which companies will be the first to combine speed with precision the best. Metal printing is shaping up as one of the top priorities on the 3D printing agenda. Plastics are all very good for household items and toys, but 3D printing has not been dubbed a technology of great promise for the aerospace industry because of plastic filaments. Aircraft manufacturers need reliable tech that can make complex shapes from metal quickly and cheaply. It’s as simple as that, and it’s also true for carmaking, to mention just one. Alcoa, the US aluminium giant, last year announced it’s working on raw materials specially tailored for 3D printing.

MARKET SEGMENTS

142th Issue - February 2016

3D Systems, which has been in the doldrums, all but exiting the consumer 3D printing market, is also focusing on metal printing. Then there are the startups developing all new metal printing methods that would also be interesting to keep an eye on. Finally, there are the questions of color and size. Aside from speed, the ability of 3D printers to create multi-color objects is still a rarity. HP claims its MJF machine will be able to print with more than one color simultaneously, so all we can do is wait for its official launch and see if it lies up to this promise. Other companies are also working on multicolor printing but for now it seems speed trumps color in terms of priorities. As for shapes, according to Fortune this will be the year of the Golf Ball Rule, attributed to one 3D printing software developer Materialise. The Gold-Ball Rule states that if something is small enough to fit in a gold ball, then it’s “ripe” for 3D printing. This rule refers mostly to high-value items, such as jewelry and medical devices and implants. It is this market segment that could become the major driver for 3D printing development in 2016.

3D Systems to Exit Consumer Printer Market 3D Systems, one of the biggest players in the 3D printing field, announced it will discontinue the production of its flagship desktop printer the Cube, as part of management efforts to boost profitability in the short term. This effectively means the company will be leaving the consumer 3D printer market. 3D Systems has had a difficult couple of years, with an influx of new startup competitors and declining sales, which hit its profits and share price. This has also been true of the other giant in the industry, Stratasys. Following the announcement about the discontinuation of the Cube, 3D Systems’ shares shed 9%, then another 4% on the next day, December 30, and on December 31 the stock ended trade at $8.69.

Medical Applications, Metals Are Best Investment Opportunities in 3D Printing 3D printing has clearly a growing industry where investment opportunities abound yet investors should be aware that even in 3D printing now everything that sparkles is a diamond. Take the biggest 3D printer manufacturers, for

example. Stratasys and 3D Systems have suffered a huge slump in their profits and share prices, and have gone for serious layoffs and operations streamlining in order to return in the black. Until that happens, however, it will be smarter to keep away from manufacturers. There are a lot of new entrants into this market and for the time being the smart choice would be to watch them closely until it becomes clear who will be the future leaders in the field. One indication on these future winners is the area of application they focus on. 3D printing companies focusing on metal printing and medical applications are a pretty safe bet: these two areas currently have the greatest potential for growth, according to various market analyses and forecasts. And speaking of metals, 3D printing materials as a whole are a good investment area. Material manufacturers are quick to respond to market demand for a greater variety and investors would do well to take advantage of the fast growth in the materials segment. 3D printing software makers are also a good bet at the moment. Previously, 3D modeling software has been difficult to use if you’re not a software engineer but the last year has seen companies like Autodesk and Dasault Systemes compe up with much easier to use solutions. This is a natural consequence of 3D printing tech makers increasingly targeting the consumer market. The demand for user-friendly software will continue to grow, so the companies with the capacity to offer it will be a good investment choice.

structures, such as printed robots, new plastic solar cells, military and medical equipment, radiation and light detectors, smart windows, sophisticated drug pills and even human organs. The new center’s director, Prof. Shlomo Magdassi, said: "The 3D and Functional Printing Center will be an interdisciplinary hub catering to researchers and students from across the university's scientific disciplines. In addition to chemists and physicists who are already in the field, the Center will invite researchers from biology, medicine, agriculture and computer science to move into this sphere. By encouraging scientific collaborations between researchers from different disciplines, I expect we will see new breakthroughs based on their synergistic expertise.” The 3D and Functional Printing Center at The Hebrew University will function as a central “printing lab” that provides accessibility for Hebrew University researchers to the printing technologies and infrastructure needed to perform high-level research in this field. The center’s equipment spans numerous technologies such as inkjet printing, digital light processing, fused deposition modeling, powder printing and laser sintering.

MBot3D Showcases Improved Flagship Printer at CES MBot3D, a company making FDM 3D printers, introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show this year its upgraded flagship machine, the Grid II. The company said that unlike many of its competitors who focus on more attractive design and detail improvements, it has decided instead to improve the functional aspects of its machine. MBot3D specifically targeted the printing plate and the printhead of its machine. Now the Grid II features a removable magnetic printing plate with a threeinduction tripod to make it more stable. The company also introduced an automatic compensation system that ensures flawless leveling during the printing process, avoiding warping of the item. The company also improved its printheads by introducing a new nozzle that features a dual cooling fan. This fan ensures the stable release of the filament and also prolongs the motor’s lifetime, MBot3D explained. The improved printheads also include a filament sensor, which alerts the user when it’s about to run out of filament, which reduces

the likelihood of printing failures.

Polaroid – the Latest Entrant into 3D Printing Polaroid has become the latest entrant into the 3D printing field, showcasing its very own printer, the ModelSmart 250S at this year’s edition of CES. The FDM desktop printer has a maximum print area of 250x150x150 mm and print speeds ranging from 20 to 100 mm per minute, which is reasonable enough. Resolution varies from 50 to 350 microns. The printer works with Polaroid’s very own set of 1.75 mm filaments that come in nine different colors. The filament cartridge features a smart chip that alerts the user of the printer when the filament is about to end. The printer features a self-calibrating extruder as well as a Wi-fi camera that allows the user to keep an eye on the printing process remotely. ReFlow – Promoting 3D Printing and Recycling Making 3D printing filaments from plastic waste is by no means new. However, most of the initiatives take place in developed countries. ReFlow is different – the social enterprise aims to help waste pickers in developing countries make a living and at the same time raise awareness of 3D printing in these countries. As part of its efforts, the company has developed a cheap extruder, which costs less than $1,000, that can turn plastic waste into 3D printing filament. ReFlow has already established a number of small-scale production facilities for such filaments in many emerging markets. The enterprise believes emerging markets are to play a big role in the global expansion of the technology and by helping matters along it will also help waste pickers earn a better living, since plastic filaments for the 3D printing industry cost a good deal and part of the not inconsiderable profits can be passed on to the pickers.

MakerBot Replacing Flawed 3D Printing Product The Smart Extruder, a MakerBot product that has received much heat in the past because of its flaws, is being replaced. Meant to make Replicator printers easier to use, the Smart Extruder is supposed to detect when filament is running out and make printers more reliable.

However, MakerBot has received many customer complaints about the Extruder jamming extremely easily and breaking down too quickly. MakerBot has been accused of tricking investors into thinking that these problems were not as severe, so now the company promises that their soon-to-be released Smart Extruder+ has been extensively tested and can work for 700+ hours at a time, with most of them being able to work for 1200+ hours. MakerBot is also doubling the length of the warranty for this product from 3 months to 6 months. The Smart Extruder+ will be slightly more expensive ($199 instead of $175), but will only cost $99 for those buying a new printer or who already own a fifth-generation Replicator. Units will begin to ship on January 18th.

Bing Predicts 3D Printing Will Become Mainstream in 2016 Every year Bing produces a wide range of predictions which cover everything from the most popular technological breakthroughs to who will win certain sporting events. Bing’s head of consumer marketing Kevin Stagg reports that the company uses a series of advanced algorithms to make these predictions intelligently. Almost all experts agree that 3D printing is skyrocketing and will certainly become mainstream very soon, and Bing confirmed that by putting it at the top of their “Tech trends to watch” list for 2016. As a search engine, Bing has access to a lot of useful data and can use the most common searches in order to make their predictions. For example, if a large number of people search for hotels in Budapest, then Bing can safely predict that Budapest will be a popular travel spot for 2016. The same goes for 3D printing, but it is more difficult to tell if these searches are just out of interest in the subject matter or if they will result in actual sales of 3D printers. However, most market analysts agree that the 3D printing market is set to enlarge at an enormous pace. The coming months will tell if Bing’s predictions are correct – they have been eerily correct in the past, so it seems that 2016 will be a prolific year for 3D printing indeed.

3D Scanners Revolutionize Crime Investigations 3D printing is all the rage these days but there is another branch of 3D imaging tech that is gaining growing prominence, and this is 3D scanning. 3D scanners are increasingly being used by law enforcement to reenact a crime scene, to visualize every little detail of it without changing it. This helps investigators in more than one way: it allows them to see the crime scene from different vantage points without needing to be there, and it also helps them with evidence collection by revealing these different angles. What’s more, by preserving the crime scene as it was at the time of the crime, it saves investigators an enormous amount of time and lowers the risk of overlooking something because you’re racing against the clock. One of the leading manufacturers of 3D scanners, FARO, says their devices can capture images with an accuracy of just 2 millimeters, up to 1,000 feet in each direction, and display the images in full color. FARO’s scanners can also be used for face and body part reconstruction, which is invaluable in cold case investigations. In addition, they can be used for what are called virtual autopsies – scanning the body before the actual autopsy is performed in order to preserve the texture of different ridges, wounds, bruises, etc. on the body, which isn’t possible with 2D pictures.

3D Printed Ceramics Hold Promise for Aerospace 3D printing technology used for the creation of complex shapes from ceramics could help major advancements in hypersonic airplanes and microscopic devices, a team of researchers from HRL Laboratories in California claims. The team has created a whole new 3D printing technology for ceramics, using resin instead of powdered ceramics, which is what the other existing methods for this material involve. Objects 3D printed from ceramic powders, however, are not very solid due to the porosity resulting from non-melted particles. With the resin this risk is eliminated and the HRL team says the items 3D printed using this technology have all the positive features of

Shapeways. The trilobites have been done in silver, bronze and steel.

Among these features are high strength, hardness, and resistance to abrasions, corrosion, and heat. These characteristics make ceramics particularly good for a wide range of applications in engineering and 3D printing has made a lot of these possible because it allows the material to be made into complex shapes.

3D Printed Gold Mesh Can Make Touchscreens More Sensitive A new 3D printing technique involving gold nanoparticles can help make touchscreens even more sensitive than they already are. The technique was developed by Swiss researchers is based on inkjet technology and uses gold particles in a solvent as a printing material. The particles are deposited by a tiny printhead and when the solvent evaporates, the gold particles arrange themlselves in a gridlike structure with walls thick between 80 and 500 nanometers. These walls are highly conductive of electricity, which improves the sensitivity of the touchscreen. At the same time, they are more transparent than the standard indium tin oxide screens, which improves overall performance, the research team says.

3D Printing Shows How Trilobites Looked Trilobites are the most numerous group of ancient organisms in the fossil record. They lived hundreds of million years ago in the oceans and are a staple exhibit in museums around the world. Yet until now we only knew how they looked from fossils and drawings. Now, a professor from the University of Chicago has 3D printed trilobites, utilizing the technology to show every detail of their appearance. The trilobites are printed in metal and in plastic resin.

A 14-year-old boy who got severely burned on the face when he fell on a live power line has become the latest in a growing number of happy patients who have benefited from the versatility of 3D printing. The boy got a 3D printed nose, which has helped restore his sense of smell and taste, two of our main senses. The feat was accomplished by two surgeons from Mount Sinai and Oxford Performance Materials, a company specializing in 3D printing neurological and orthopaedic implants. This is the first successful 3D printed nose implantation in the US, which resulted in a fully functional olfactory organ.

Chinese Desktop 3D Printer Market to Surpass US Market in 2016, IDC Experts Predict In 2016 China's 3D printer market shipments will reach 160,000 units, surpassing the US market,’ says Mo Minyi, an analyst with IDC China. “However, in terms of income, the US market will remain ahead of China, as the Chinese 3D printer market growth rate over the coming five years is primarily being driven by low cost desktop machines. In contrast, a relatively higher emphasis is placed on industrial 3D printing and high-cost, high-end 3D printers in the US market, where a relatively high number of business users is turning to 3D printing.

Professor Alan Drummond, human geneticist and biochemist, first drew the trilobites he was going to 3D print by hand, then used Inkscape to turn the drawings into a basis for 3D modeling. Then he had the shapes printed on a selective laser sintering printer from Formlabs. For the metal shapes, he used the 3D printing services of
