PUBLISHER'S MESSAGE NOVEMBER 2015

Dear readers: Winter is just around the corner, carrying with it its chilly breeze. We can’t help but ponder what season the aftermarket industry is in. Facing the wave of a rapidly growing online mobile connection, how is the aftermarket, as a traditional industry, to catch up with the pace of such a massive online presence?

Lots of happenings are going on in the industry right now. Probably forefront on people’s minds are discussions about industry consolidations. Additional topics include how the traditional aftermarket will keep pace with the internet of things and 3D printing with the market potential it brings waiting to be taken advantage of.

The industry has matured with a complete supply chain, where cooperation and competition through co-existence will become the norm. I am proud that many successful entrepreneurs have been born out of this industry growth and maturity. We will gradually introduce them and their successful stories, hoping to present successful examples to emulate in your own venture. Happy reading,

Ms. Sunny Sun Publisher sunny@rechargeasia.com

My recommended book for the month: 3D Printing Will Rock the World, by John Hornick, to be published near the end of November. Several thought leaders in the 3D printing space said this about the book:

Analyst: HP May Consider Buying Stratasys HP’s entry into the 3D printing field has created a lot of buzz and one analyst, Jason North from investment bank Jefferies, believes this entry might involve an acquisition or at least a partnership with the current leader, Stratasys. The reasons for this speculation seem logical. Among then, North cites, is Stratasys’ reseller network. This network gives the company a definite competitive advantage over the second-best, 3D Systems. What’s more, Stratasys’ technology is not a direct competitor of HP’s multi jet fusion, which makes them more suited for partnership than, again HP and 3D Systems. Besides, HP and Stratasys have already cooperated in the 3D printing niche, back in 2010, when the imaging major was making its first steps there. At the time, Stratasys made 3D printers carrying the HP brand and HP sold them internationally. In short, should HP look for a partner to make its foray into 3D printing more successful, chances are it has to look no further than Stratasys.

Trefis Forecasts Further Decline in Lexmark Printer Revenues Tre f i s e x p e c t s t h e d e c l i n e i n p r i n t e r a n d p r i n t i n g consumables revenues at Lexmark to continue going down in the second half of the year. In an article for Forbes, the research company notes that this business department contributes the bulk of Lexmark’s profits but that it is facing intense competition from other OEMs as well as third-party manufacturers and remanufacturers of printing consumables. This is a reflection of a global trend in printer and printing consumables demand, Trefis notes, quoting IDC data that reveals hardcopy peripherals shipments in the second quarter of the year shrank 6% as demand is slowing. Regarding Lexmark in particular, Trefis notes that one factor contributing to the decline in revenues is the improved efficiency of its cartridge technology, which leads to longer-lasting cartridges and therefore fewer cartridges sold. Last year, Lexmark sold an average of 5.22 cartridges per printer and this number is likely to drop to 4.82 this year. There is hope, however, and it comes in the shape of the company’s managed print services. Contracts in this segment are increasing and this supports consumables sales. In fact, says Trefis, the MPS business will likely become the main driver of revenues for Lexmark’s ISS department.

Memjet vs. HP: The Patent Suit! This lawsuit has stirred the industry because the implication of this technology is widely recognized as the next technology revolution in the wide-format printing or even 3D printing industry. According to Memjet: Memjet has a completely reenvisioned printhead design, named “waterfall” technology. It’s 70,400 jets per printhead shoot millions of ink drops per second. HP PageWide Technology stated in its white paper: “In 2015, HP will introduce a new generation of high-productivity large-format printers using the printhead module. And, in 2016, HP will introduce High Definition Nozzle Architecture (HDNA) for HP Inkjet Web Presses. HDNA uses the highdefinition capabilities of HP SPT to place low drop weight nozzles between existing nozzles on the 4.25-inch printhead. This provides low and high drop weight printing with twice the number of nozzles—21,120 at 2,400 nozzles per inch—for a breakthrough in quality and performance in high-speed production printing.” “HP PageWide Technology overcomes these trade-offs with revolutionary and scalable designs that deliver quality and speed together—at a significant cost advantage— based on the latest HP printing innovations built on proven

technologies.” The Memjet suit, filed in United States District Court for the Southern District of California, asks the court to prevent HP from using what Memjet insists is unauthorized use of its patented wide-printhead technology, and to award monetary damages for product already shipping. It mentions eight specific patents as relevant to the case. It is indicated in an article by Randall Newton in Cadalyst, this suit may impact HP’s plan for a new line of 3D printers based on the same technology.

China Is Serious in Its 3D Printing Ambitions Three years ago the Economist forecasted that 3D printing will drive a third industrial revolution. These days it seems that this revolution is indeed taking place. In China. There are hundreds of 3D printer making companies, from small startups to large companies like Beijing Tiertime Technology, which employs north of 150 people and markets its affordable desktop printers in the tens of thousands across 40 countries at prices ranging from $470 to $3,146. The company also offers 3D printing services. Since 2012, its revenues have been growing at annual rates of between 40% and 50%, with turnover for 2014 exceeding 100 million yuan. The consumer segment is a major growth driver for the industry, and along with medical applications, education and industrial applications have boosted the 3D printing market in the country from 1 billion yuan to 3-4 billion over the past three years. Luo Jun, secretary of the world 3D Printing Technology Industry Alliance, says that the market has the potential to reach 10 billion yuan next year. Tiertime’s marketing director, Guo Qiao, commented that when the 3D printing technology reaches a stage in which it is as easy to use as a PC, the future will be “unimaginable”. New applications for the technology are constantly emerging but the biggest share of the market in China belongs to the educational system, at 90%. Thanks to a special policy of encouragement from Beijing, schools are setting up 3D printing laboratories in order to familiarize their students with the technology at an early age. At the same time, the individual consumer market is underdeveloped. This, however, is true on a global scale, as 3D printers are still something of a quirk rather than a household necessity.

3D Printing Stories Roundup Sols, a consumer product 3D printing applications company has introduced 3D printed, customized insoles, SOSL Flex. The insoles provide greater comfort, better arch support, pain relief, and cushioning. The hopeful owner of a pair of these can scan their foot using an iOS app and send the scan to the company, which will then print and ship the custom-made soles within ten days.

An 11-year-old Australian boy has designed and 3D-printed a special device for the storage of old blood test strips for diabetics. The device is small enough to fit in a diabetic kit, and it won its creator, William Grame, the Origin Energy littleBIGidea. Grame is a diabetic himself and the idea came to him as an easy way to stop littering the floor with used strips after he tests his blood. Staples will distribute the products of XYZprinting, it has been reported, making a per fect match given the Taiwanese 3D printer maker’s usual target groups: schools, small businesses, and home offices. The U.S. retail major will also distribute consumables for the Da Vinci product line. Polish company SMARTTECH claims its 3D scanner, Micron 3D ARCHEO, offers the highest resolution in the market, 24 megapixels, which provides a glimpse into the structure of fabrics and other complex materials. The unique scanner was showcased at the TCT Show in Birmingham, the UK. Materialise and 3Dvinci Creations have joined forces in the creation of i.Materialise, a provider of 3D printing services for the Middle East, specifically in Beirut and Dubai. Materialise will provide the platform and 3DVinci Creations will bring into the partnership its low-cost 3D printing services centers to offer consumers in the region the best of both worlds.

3D Printing Materials Market Grows at 18% CAGR The global 3D printing materials market is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 18% and will continue to do so until 2020, according to the latest report by Transparency Market Research. By that year, the market will reach a total value of $1.4 billion, up from a mere $450 million in 2013. In terms of materials, plastics are the leader for now, and will continue to grow at the fastest pace until 2020, Transparency Market Research forecast, explaining it with fast-growing demand from industries ranging from electronics to consumer products. These two, by the way, are expected to register a 17% CAGR in terms of 3D printing materials use until 2020. Among the other main drivers for the 3D printing materials business are increasing adoption in education and government agencies, as well as regulatory support for the technology. Region-wise, North America will continue to be the largest market for 3D printing materials until 2020.

3D Platform Leverages Open Market Opportunities 3D Platform, a manufacturer of large-format 3D printers is taking advantage of the opportunities created by the open market, the company’s VP for sales and marketing, John Good, said at the TCT show in London. “For example,” he said, “3D Platform has drawn on the expertise of material scientists working for companies such as GE and BASF, instead of trying to develop its own material science team.” Good also said that the company has been working to develop printing with more than one material in order to offer customers the additional benefits of multi-material printing. In speaking about the latest achievements of 3D Platform, Good said they have released an upgraded version of their Workbench series, which offers better user experience and a better interaction between the user and the printer, and that they have moved quite a bit forward with motion control. Good said a lot of other producers use stepper motors with their large-format 3D printers, but 3D Platform has instead bet on servo technology, which leads to twice shorter cycle times and improved print quality, with resolution reduced to 1.25 microns.

3D Printing Adoption in India Grows, Say Insiders Prasad Radogi, founder of Altem Technologies, said in an interview with the International Business Times that 3D printing tech adoption across the industrial world in India is growing at a fast pace. Already, he says, some of the major heavy industry players in the country such as TATA, Mahindra, and HCL are using 3D printers for prototyping. There is general enthusiasm surrounding the technology, which facilitates its adoption, he says, along with its most appealing characteristics for the business world: shorter prototyping times and lower costs. Among the industries that will most benefit from 3D printing are also aeronautics, cookware manufacturers, and consumer electronics. As for how Altem Technology is helping the development, Raadogi said the company is taking an active part in school and college seminars aiming to raise awareness about 3D printing among the younger generations. Also, the company offers a free 3D printing service as a way of promoting the technology.

3D Printing Can Help Nerve Regeneration Nerve regeneration is a long, complex, and, worst of all, rare process, rendering most nerve damage permanent.

MARKET SEGMENTS

Perhaps not for long, however – a study by scientists from a number of U.S. universities has suggested that the damaged nerves can be replaced by a 3D-printed silicon guide featuring biochemical cues. The team tested their concept on rats with damage to the sciatic nerve. They first took 3D scans of the healthy nerve, then used the scans to 3D-print a silicon scaffold with chemical signals to replace the damaged nerve. The rat in which they implanted the artificial nerve regained the ability to walk in 12 weeks. The authors of the study claim that even though the regeneration process will be long, the implantation of the 3D printed structure would only take about an hour. Now the next step is to create a library of healthy nerve scans to be used in case of nerve damage, to make it easier to create custom-made “nerve prosthetics” for patients. Silicon will eliminate any possible rejection problems since it is an inert material in the human body, although some scientists would prefer a biodegradable scaffold for the regenerating nerves.

3D Printing in Healthcare To Grow at 15% CAGR By 2019 The market of 3D printing in medical applications is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15.4% through 2019, according to a report by Transparency Market Research, reaching $965.5 million by the end of the period. The sector is one of the main drivers of the technology, which will truly revolutionize healthcare. Medical applications of 3D printing include medical devices, implants, surgical instruments, surgical guides, and bioengineering. The key markets for 3D printing in medical applications are North America, Europe, and the AsiaPacific, with North America set to relinquish its lead spot to Europe, where, says Transparency Market Research, market conditions are more conducive to growth.

Cancer Patient Gets 3D Printed Ribcage A Spanish man with cancer of the sternum and rib cage has now received a whole new rib cage made from titanium using 3D printing technology. The treatment of his malignant growth required the removal of parts of his rib cage, so the alternative was either prosthetics or, better, a customized rib cage. The rib cage was made by Anatomics, a company that makes medical devices,

which worked in partnership with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization. CSIRO, Australia’s science agency, provided the 3D printer and also access to Lab 22, an innovation center in Melbourne. The lightweight rib cage was designed based on computer tomography scans of the patient and was then built from titanium powder.

Astrophysicist Funds Chinese 3D Printer Startup Famous astrophysicist George Smoot has set up a 20-million-yuan fund for a 3D printing startup based in Zhongguancun. The fund is part of a larger undertaking worth billions of dollars that has been set up by Smoot and several other investors aimed at supporting technology advancements around the world.

Cheap 3D Printers Spearhead Shipment Growth A new study from Gartner has revealed that 3D printer shipments are likely to increase to 244,533 this year, then further to 490,000, and more than 5.6 million in 2019. This considerable increase will be driven mainly by low-cost machines, Gartner says, the so-called consumer printers with price tags below $2,500, which are the preferred choice of schools and higher education institutions. What’s more, printers in the ranges below $1,000 and between $1,000 to $2,500 are selling particularly well, but those below $1,000 will come to account for an increasingly big portion of total shipments; from 25.5% currently to 40.7% by 2019. The fastest-growing segment within the industry is printing materials, with filaments the leader among them. Their shipments this year are seen at 232,336 units, which will likely grow to 5.53 million units over the next four years. Geographically, the fastest adoption of 3D printers is happening in China, where the annual rate of growth for this year has been calculated at 172.9%, thanks to a government policy encouraging the development of 3D printing technologies and the education of the future generations of its creators and users. Eurasia boasts a rate of growth of 131.7%, and the Asia-Pacific has a growth rate of 126.4%, completing the top three.

printed parts has just been entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest structure made entirely from 3D printed parts. The pavilion, dubbed VULCAN, was showcased during the Beijing Design Week and stands in Parkview Green. A total twenty large-scale 3D printers were used for the components of the structure, which is 26.5 feet long and 9.5 feet high. The inspiration for its shape came from silkworm cocoons, authors You Lei and Xu Feng from the Laboratory for Creative Design said.

Chinese Startup Offers 3D Printed Jianbings A startup company set up by two graduates of Chinese Tsinghua University is making the country’s most popular street food using 3D printing technology. Peter Pan Science Technologies was founded by Shi Kanyue and Wu Yili, both with a technological background. The 3D printers used by the company can make up to 20 jianbings simultaneously, while a human being can only make three at a time. The 3D printing is also faster, with a pancake ready in no more than two minutes. An additional feature of Peter Pan Science Technologies’ products are the different shapes they can come into, from comic book heroes like Superman, to pop culture icons like Hello Kitty.

South Korean Firm Makes Superfast 3D Printer 3D printing is not the quickest way to make things, at least for the time being, but it seems that like everything else in this industry print speeds are rising at a very fast pace. The latest news in this respect is South Korean Carima’s C-CAT (Carima- Continuous Additive 3D Printing Technology), which can make a digital light processing printer work 400 times faster than it would without it. A 400x speed increase is certainly impressive and the company demonstrated the ability of its machine by completing a 10-cm model of the Eiffel Tower in less than ten minutes. The important thing is that Carima’s printer successfully avoids the problem of precision that is the usual company of faster print speeds in 3D printers. Carima said it would release the first 3D printer fitted with the C-CAT tech early next year, and it will be able to print at speeds of 1 cm/minute, with a layer thickness of just 5 microns, which would ensure the accuracy of detail. The company did not say, however, whether the C-CAT can be fitted, as an upgrade, onto existing Carima 3D printers.

Superfast 3D Printer Gets Kickstarter Funding Readybox, the latest promise for a much faster than usual 3D printer has passed the $12,500 mark set by its creators in a Kickstarter funding campaign. According to these creators, Radybox can print at speeds six times faster than existing machines. The person behind Readybox is a 21-year-old engineering student from the University of Maryland. Brett Potter explains that his brainchild uses a new extrusion system that allows for faster printing speeds. In addition to these improved speeds, the new system, which is currently pending a patent, allows for greater accuracy, and reduces the risk of the plastic filament clogging the extruder because of the higher force with which it is pushed through. The funding from the Kickstarter campaign will be used for the launch of industrial production.

GM, Stratasys Launch 3D Printing Art Program in India General Motors and Stratasys have joined forces in the launch of a special 3D printing training program for GM’s employees in India. The three-month course will teach the carmaker’s designers in the country how to use the technology in their work and how to create their own designs using 3D printing, from prototypes to end-use items. The course will involve a two-day workshop, followed by two months in which the participants will be able to develop their own designs. These designs will then be judged by a panel of industry experts, and the results will be announced next month.

Formlabs Introduces Reworked Form 2 Printer For mlabs showcased its completely reworked For m 2 flagship stereolitography 3D printer at the TCT show in London, with co-founder Max Lobovsky saying that the main purpose of the rework was to provide greater reliability and better print quality, as well as making the machine easier to use. “The reworked Form 2 has a 42% larger print volume, an improved optical system, and a proprietary galvanometer, which makes the printer more precise and faster,” Lobovsky explained. With regard to reliability, the new Form 2 features a sealed optical system. The printer also has improved capabilities for printing larger crosssection objects and a cartridge, so the user won’t have to handle the resin. In addition, the machine features Wi-Fi

connectivity, which improves the user experience.

NASA Shortlists 30 Finalists for 3D Printed Mars Habitat Challenge NASA has announced a list of thirty finalists in its $2.25-million Mars Habitat Challenge that involves teams of architects and engineers designing 3D printed habitats for the Red Planet. The designs should be capable of supporting human life on Mars for a prolonged period of time. The contest is a partnership between the space agency and America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute. The finalists will be judged by a panel on September 27, and the winner team will take home $25,000. The secondbest team will be awarded $15,000, and the number three will get $10,000. Their designs will help NASA figure out how the astronauts it plans to send to Mars in the 2030s will make a home for themselves. The idea is to make shelters from locally available resources using a 3D printer. The requirements included a total area of 1,000 square feet for the habitat for a team of four astronauts. The habitat should include life support systems, cooking areas, bedrooms and bathrooms.

Polymaker, Covestro Join Forces to Improve Filament The market of 3D printing materials is a growing one and a lucrative one. In the latest sign that industry players are aware of its potential, filament maker Polymaker has teamed up with 3D printing consumables manufacturer Covestro in order to perfect a polycarbonate filament developed by the latter company. The focus on polycarbonate is no accident; this material is a favorite among 3D printing users because of its high strength-to-weight ratio, one of the highest in the polymer department, in fact. In addition it is heat resistant, which makes it suitable for a wide range of 3D-printed items and superior to the more widely used PLA and ABS materials. There are, however, problems with currently available polycarbonate filaments, the biggest one being difficult adhesion to the print bed, which leads to warping. To avoid this, polycarbonate filament producers are blending the material with PLA and ABS, which essentially compromises the benefits of the material.

Commenting on the new partnership, a Covestro representative said the company’s knowledge in the area of materials and Polymaker’s know-how in 3D printing will make for a fruitful and mutually beneficial partnership, which will result in innovative, groundbreaking materials. Currently, Polymaker offers two polycarbonate filaments: PC-Plus and PC-Max.

Fascinating as the range of 3D printed designs can be, functionality is also a good idea, which sometimes gets neglected. Three companies from the industry, online platform 3D Hubs, software maker SketchUp, and 3D printer maker Flashforge, have joined forces in a competition that aims to generate cool but, more importantly, functional designs that can be used in everyday life.

Stratasys Teams Up with Wired To Bring 3D Printing To Schools

The competition is on and anyone can upload a design concept to SketchUp’s 3D Warehouse. The design should be tagged with #sketchup3Dhubs and the box reading “I want this to be 3D printable” should be ticked. The application period continues until October 25. The criteria, according to which the designs will be judged, include innovation, printability, and utility. The organizers of the event will award the ten best design concepts, with those at places 10 to 3 receivinga 3D print of their designs. The second-best design’s author will be awarded a FlashForge Finder 3D printer. First place prize is a FlashForge Dreamer printer plus a SketchUp Pro License.

A competition organized by Stratasys and Wired magazine is aiming to popularize the technology among students, in line with a British government initiative for including 3D printing in the school curricula in the near future. The first prize in the competition, a Stratasys uPrint Se 3D printer, went to the Watford Grammar School for Girls, and the eight winners had the chance to try it immediately, producing smartphone cases. The printer will now be used in a 3D printing workshop at the school. Commenting on the competition, Andy Middleton, senior vice-president and general manager of Stratasys’ EMEA division, said that educating the next generation of engineers and designers has always been part of the company’s agenda, as has raising awareness of the technology among students.

Startup Aims for Biggest Glass 3D Printer A startup company called 3DTOPO has the ambition to build the largest 3D printer that uses glass as printing material. The company’s founder, Jeshua Lacock, said he was inspired by a project from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and he is using the design that the MIT team developed for his project. His machine has a 3 x 3 x 3 foot print chamber, where molten glass will flow from an alumina crucible. Lacock told 3D Print that some of the parts of the printer he developed himself using proprietary technology he calls Lost PLA casting. The technology involves 3D printing a plastic mold and then pouring molten aluminum in the mold. At the moment, Lacock and his team are working on the nozzle that the glass 3D printer will use, and after that they will begin showcasing the new product.

139th Issue - November 2015

The second new model is a food printer, the XYZ 3D Food printer, which can use any soft food as printing material, for instance confectionery products such as fondant, chocolate or sugar. It could also print a pizza crust or biscuits. What’s more, the company has announced that the range of materials compatible with this machine will be quickly expanded, even before it officially hits the market. Following the trend of liberalization in the use of thirdparty materials, the third new model XYZprinting will be launching is the Da Vinci 1.0A Professional, which can use third-party filaments. Although no specifics about this model can be released, it’s reasonable to expect that it will offer the same high quality at an affordable price that all the other Da Vincis offer. In addition to the three printers, XYZprinting has also released a number of robotic kits, aimed at beginners in the field. The kits include step-by-step assembly instructions that are easy to follow to make a customized robot design and programming.

XYZprinting With 20% Share of 3D Printer Market XYZprinting accounted for 22% of all 3D printer shipments in the first half of this year, according to a report by independent analyst,Canalys. The overall shipments rose by an impressive 52% on an annual basis, reaching a total 88,000 globally. The analyst firm noted that XYZprinting’s top performance was due to the variety of machines they market – a line of six 3D printers, using both FDM and SLA technology. Another reason may well be the affordability of the Taiwanese company’s products. All in all, Canalys reported that the annual increase in 3D printer shipments highlights growing demand for the technology both from individual consumers and from businesses looking for ways to take advantage of the many applications of 3D printing. The value of all 3D printer and related sales, including filaments, other materials and services, went up by 21%. The size of the 3D printer market in the first half of the year reached $1.8 billion and Canalys forecasts that this will swell to $20.2 billion by 2019.

Xerox Releases Two New Printed Memory Products In a bid to help businesses and government agencies avoid counter feiting, Xerox has launched two new printed electronic labels, or printed memories as they are also known, aiming to ensure the integrity of a product throughout its journey from the factory to its destination, says Xerox’s vice president in charge of printed memory. The first label, Xerox Printed Memory, contains 36 bits of rewritable memory and can store up to 68 billion points of data. It can help track down the journey of a product and make sure it is genuine. The second label, Xerox Printed Memory with Cryptographic Security, features an additional encrypted code. The code can only be read by authorized persons with a special reader, which makes it one of the safest anti-counterfeit products in this market segment. The two solutions provide a cheap and reliable way of authenticating a product and avoiding counterfeit products.

Canon MF229dw – Great for the Small Business The canon MF229dm all-in-one, which you can get for $299, is one of the best choices for a small business where monochrome printing and copying are the main activities in the imaging department. Its design is compact, with the automatic feed-in tray on top of the scanner plate and the output tray also within the main body, and the 250-sheet paper tray is at the bottom. Outside design, the MF229dw offers print speeds of some 17.1 pages per minute, which is faster than the average for devices in its class, and two-sided printing cuts that to just 11.7 ppm. It is also faster than average when it comes to graphics, achieving a speed of 12.7 ppm. With respect to photos, however, it is slower than its direct competitors. Yet, it’s not made for printing photos, so that’s not such a great disadvantage, especially given that the print quality for text and graphics is excellent, according to tests. The speeds and quality for scans and copies are also above average. In terms of cost per page, there are two options. With a standard cartridge for 2,400 pages, cost per page comes in at $0.035. With a high-yield cartridge, which is good for 2,800 pages, this cost comes down to $0.032. As for compatibilities and software, the MF229dw works with Apple AirPrint and the Canon print Business app, which offers users additional capabilities such as camera and document sharing. The toolbox for Windows users includes options such as scan to email, OCR, and PDF functions. In short, it’s well worth its price.

Remanufacturing the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M552, M553 series Black and Color Toner cartridges By Mike Josiah and the Technical Staff at Uninet Imaging

Mike Josiah Mike Josiah is the Technical Director at UniNet’s East Coast office, a global distributor of toner, Smartchips, OPC drums, and other toner remanufacturing components. Mr. Josiah is an industry veteran since 1987, and a member of ASTM committee F.05, the STMC Technician Certification committee, as well as an STMC trainer. He and his support team at UniNet contribute with technical articles to industry trade magazines, and conduct seminars at association meetings and tradeshows worldwide.

The M552/553 series of multifunction color laser printers are based on a 40 ppm black and color 1200 x 1200 Dpi engine, (3600 DPI with RET). The cartridges are an all in one type cartridge that consists of the toner supply, drum, and waste chamber. The basic physical style of this cartridge is similar to others but there are some distinct differences in how the cartridge is built as well as how it works. All will be covered in the instructions. One major change is in the chip technology. These new cartridges use a technology HP calls CAT which stands for Cartridge Authentication Technology. This feature comes off by default, but if turned on the user can specify only new genuine HP cartridges can be used. If on and a remanufactured cartridge with a new aftermarket chip is installed, the printer will not work. It must be turned off, if not an “Unauthorized Cartridge” message will display. This system also has an anti-theft feature which allows the user to lock a set of cartridges to a specific printer. According to HP this helps prevent theft. Once locked if a cartridge is moved to another machine a “Protected cartridge” message will display. This feature is also off by default on new machines.

The Color toner cartridge printing process happens in a series of stages or steps. For the purpose of this article, we will call them stages. Figure A shows the basic layout of the cartridges and how they relate to one-another and

the printer. Note that the laser units are on the bottom, the cartridges are at an angle, and the ITB is on top. Figure B shows the complete image formation process

Figure B In the first stage, light from the preexposure LED strikes the drum to remove any residual charges from the drums surface. See Figure C. This LED erases all residual images and charges. In older the machines the PCR ran a DC and an AC voltage. The AC was to help erase any residual voltages. In newer engines the PCR charges the drum only and the LED erases. So if you’re getting ghosting and/or backgrounding it’s not the PCR but most likely is a dirty LED lamp.

Remanufacturing the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M552, M553 series Black and Color Toner cartridges places a uniform negative DC voltage on the OPC drum surface. The amount of the negative DC voltage placed on the drum is controlled by the printer’s intensity setting. See Figure D

Figure D In the second stage, a laser beam is fired onto a rotating mirror (called the scanner). As the mirror rotates, the beams are reflected into a set of focusing lenses. The beams then strike the drums surface, reducing the negative charge and leaving a latent electrostatic image on the drum. The areas where the lasers did not strike the drum will retain the higher negative charge. See Figure E

is also held onto and attracted to the developer roller by another negative DC bias voltage. This voltage is controlled by the printer’s intensity setting and causes either more or less toner to be attracted by the developer roller. This in turn will either increase or decrease the print density. The amount of toner on the developer roller is controlled by the doctor blade, which uses pressure to keep the amount of toner on the roller constant.

The third or developing stage is where the toner is developed on the drum by the developing section (or supply chamber), which contains the toner particles. The development stage is actually made up of two steps: toner charging, and the actual development. In the toner charging stage, the toner stirring blade turns inside the hopper. As it turns, friction causes a negative potential to develop on the toner. In addition, a foam feed roller brings the toner to the developer roller and also places a negative charge on the toner. These two charges help ensure a uniform charge on the toner. Once the toner is properly charged, the toner will coat the developer roller. The toner

is moving between the Secondary transfer roller and the ITB. As the ITB passes the Secondary transfer roller, the positive charge is picked up, and draws the negatively charged toner off the Belt and onto the paper. Note that this entire process is upside down from most previous Hp engines. The ITB and transfer rollers are on top of the OPC drum, not underneath it. See Figures G & H

As the laser exposed areas of the OPC Drum approach the developer roller, the toner particles are attracted to the drum’s sur face due to the opposite voltage potentials of the toner, and laser exposed areas of the OPC drum. See Figure F

Figure H

Figure F

Figure E

The fourth stage is the transfer stage. This is where there are some large differences from monochrome printers and also from other color lasers. In the Primary transfer stage the transfer roller which is located directly opposite each OPC drum, places a positive DC bias charge on the back of the ITB or Image Transfer Belt. Each toner cartridge has a separate transfer charge roller. T h e i m a ge is t r a n s f e r re d f ro m t h e drum directly to the ITB. This process is repeated for each color cartridge in the following order: Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, and Black. At the same time, the paper

Figure G

The paper separates from the ITB belt as the belt turns back down to start the process again. The static charge on the back of the paper is decreased with static charge eliminator. This helps stabilize the paper feed, and also prevents toner flares (spots) under low temperature and low humidity conditions. See Figure I

Figure I In the fifth stage, the image is then fused onto the paper by the fuser assembly. The fuser Assembly is comprised of the upper heating assembly and lower pressure roller. Reasons Chinese Papermaking Industry in Dilemma

Pigment & Dye, Which Fits Inkjet Printers More?

Digital Printing in China
