ARCH 149: Design Fundamentals & Principles Final
DATE: Dec 2022
LOCATION: El Segundo, CA
The name “El Segundo” was adopted in 1911 when Chevron built its second refinery. This is where the term El Segundo comes from, which derives in Spanish for, “the second”. This city is known for its history of space and aircrafts, holding major aerospace companys such as Aerospace Corp, Boeing Co, SpaceX, and LAX. Because of this iconic history, it was almost certain to create a design that revolves around the aerospace theme that the city is widely known for.
This project is the culmination of learning how architecture not only can address issues, but also create yet to be discovered opportunities in the user experience. The objective for this project has been to introduce us to some of the various steps involved in considering, analyzing and developing a design solution that addresses challenges and fills a need for a particular site. It also demonstrates how the artistic expression is essential and distinguishes architecture from other professions, such as engineering and planning, associated with the built environment.

Constraints Opportunities
- Police facility due south, casts shadow over plaza
- One plaza entrance for handicapped
- No handicap entrance on east side
- Create experience from end to end that tells a story
- El Segundo has muliple history topics for concept
- Outdoor plaza for workers
- Attraction for farmers market
SUN & WIND DIAGRAM

Based on the sun path, the plaza gets continuous light throughout the day. City hall and the police department lack longer overhangs which results in less shaded areas in the plaza. This means it gave me opportunities to create shaded areas for the users to interact with.
The prevailing winds coming from south west are partially blocked by the police department but still provides minimal wind circulation. On the other hand, the seasonal winds have a difficult time reaching this plaza due to city hall and other surrounding existing buildings acting as a barrier for the warm winds.

The civic plaza is known to be the heart of El Segundo. It was important to understand and create a sort of hierarchy in design that paints that picture of the city. Based off of the initial site visit and site plan, there were many opportunities to create large gatherings for the users of El Segundo.

ELEVATION
Because of El Segundo’s title “Aerospace Capital of the World”, it was most certain to base my design off of an abstract airplane wing that acts as a multi-functional stage for assembly and/or gathering, which is something that the community currently lacks.

Located at the heart of the city, this proposal has the intentions of being a monument of a plaza that anchors down El Segundo. With its respected history within the concept of this design, the users are now able to visit the park to learn more about the city with its ability for pop up kiosks and art walls for the users to interact with.

RENDERS

The story being the plaza starts with the concept of “astrionics” which is the science and technology put into aircrafts. Metaphorically speaking the aircraft being El Segundo, the astrionics would be the users itself. The three basic stages of flight are as follows:
Takeoff: The users are greeted with a much needed “El Segundo” sign that reels the users into the plaza by walking up a slope.

Cruise: The main part of the plaza is a central green that has passive play for children and a multi-functional space with buckwheat for the blue butterflies.
Landing: A step lower in grade where we have stadium seating for employees to enjoy lunch or gather.

Plaza Liftoff
We were lucky enough to be offered the chance to present this project in front of El Segundos planning comissioners. It was an honor because we were able to receive feedback and critiques about what the city has the potential for. With this idea, the wings of the plaza could represent a hierarchy at the heart of the city.

GRANDPA’S ABODE
ET103: Sustainable Materials and Methods
DATE: Dec 2022
Grandpa’s Abode was a title named from another name for an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) known as grandma flats. For this design proposal, we were to design a net zero ADU that uses both passive and active sustainable design opportunities. It’s main focus is on becoming net zero by its use of building performance and material carbon footprint.
This project represents a culmination of the semester’s content. The objective of the course was to understand the material and method choices made and their ecological implications when designing and constructing a proposed building.
