klm's laundry team 2011

hi, i am rebella

great things in business are never done by one person alone you go fast, together you go far

hi ! when i was given the responsibility for the logistics of all of KLM’s catering and board supplies at schiphol airport around 2010, i quickly discovered that the supply chain of all textile related items – blankets, pillows, napkins, overalls, uniforms, etc – was not operating optimally. almost each item had its own logistics and was managed accordingly, leading to a scattered landscape of management responsibilities and lots of waste everywhere. i started to create momentum to change this. together with colleagues from many different KLM-departments and an innovative supplier that excels in corporate responsibility, we developed a bold and ambituous collaboration. reBella simone van neerven

hi, i am rebella

we are talking about 5 million pillows and 5 million blankets yearly. within the entire supply chain a little less than 300.000 kilometers were made every year more than ten different KLM departments were involved, making the decision process not so easy J but together we pulled it off and especially super proud of the social corporate responsibility aspects in this initiative

as well as many different articles that need cleaning; from pillows and blankets to curtains and napkins we are talking about more than 10 million items in total !

reBella | 11

klm outsources these cleaning activities, but the problem was that every department managed their own contracts, leading to a suboptimal result in many ways

reBella | 13

together with a team of mixed skills and expertises, we leaned the entire supply chain

reBella | 15

we created value stream maps to understand the current state of the processes

reBella | 17

we used these to design a new process

reBella | 19

one of the key solutions was to create a 'laundry and handling hub' close to schiphol airport. we found the former catering building very well suited for this

reBella | 21

from this

to this

with this hub close to schiphol we simplified the entire supply chain drastically

reBella | 23

with 40% less handovers, we significantly reduced the number of mistakes

reBella | 25

... and 80% less truck movements ...

reBella | 27

... which also meant 80% less co2 emissions !!

reBella | 29

oh, and by the way, the total cost of ownership was reduced by 10-15%

reBella | 31

we found an incredible supplier to partner up with: lamme textielbeheer their open, honest, and innovative way of working made us decide to go for them

reBella | 33

actually, we so strongly believed in this collaboration that we managed to sign a 10year contract, which was highly exceptional at klm ( honestly, we had to put in a lot of effort to convince klm's coo J )

reBella | 35

in this contract we plead we would honestly divide every (financial) gain if we would further improve the process

reBella | 37

this also kept everyone going to continuously look for better ways, leading to an open & win-win collaboration that stimulated bottom up innovation and empowered employees

reBella | 39

also, they have a very strong commitment towards corporate social responsibility ( they walk the talk !!)

reBella | 41

lamme textielbeheer managed to set up a fantastic innovative collaboration with the am group, a sheltered employment organisation

reBella | 43

it turned out to be a great success in many different ways

reBella | 45

always respectful to and proud of all cultures represented by the workforce

reBella | 47

by adopting the same principles and way of working the supplier could grow its business and expand internationally

reBella | 49

an inspirational ‘can do’ story for other klm-teams that were facing challenging issues where multiple departments were involved and progress had stalled

reBella | 51

the approach was so inspirational that the next challenge to tackle followed soon after: shorten the aircraft turnaround time of the embraer 190 open the booklet here
