Luckily this season we can hold on for a little longer as we all dare to be different as we’re going back to 2010 as we see the return in block colour jumpers. Spring Essentials with Joules Joules has quickly become one of Britain’s most treasured and loved clothing brands with its colourful and funky prints.

reton stripes and floral prints have become the basis for many of their vibrant and upbeat garments which would brighten up anyone’s day. They have accompanied warm pastel tones with a splurge of their signature coral and bright yellow to create several uplifiting collections. One of the new collections that has hit the brand new Southampton store is a blossom print which was found by the design team in New York, the team then took aspects of the blossom painting to create their own print that features on a multitude of Harbour tops, tunics and Wensley scarves. However, what is really special about these prints is that they are all hand drawn so no particular garment is the same.

The bright blue blossom harbour is especially refreshing with its cool blue backdrop complementing the pop of the bright pink design. But of course, it wouldn’t be Joules without their stripes. Among the pretty prints are the standard Breton stripes that are one of Britain’s most loved item that the company produces and is definitely an essential in anyone’s wardrobe. These patterns have become the core basis of the brand that allows you to spot the garments anywhere on UK high streets. Another item that is an absolute must have this spring is the polka dot Sammy dress. It incorporates a hint of casualness with its denim material but also maintains an area of chicness with the polka dot desgn. Paired with a chunky belt and a wensley printed scarf, it becomes the perfect spring outfit.

Florals? for Spring?

Many of this season’s floral print is given a grungier note with dark backgrounds, as seen in some of the offerings from River Island who boast the season trend of floral dresses (in shirt dress, tea dress and midi form), as well as floral statement trousers, skirts and swimwear. Marks & Spencer Marks and Spencer have channelled the floral trend in a much more classic and subtle means, translating florals through swing dresses, high-waisted swimwear, A-line midi skirts, t-shirts and blouses. In the iconic fashion classic, The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep’s charcter Miranda Priestley famously quoted “Florals? for Spring? Groundbreaking”

Despite the sarcastic note and its obvious signal to the repeating trend, the fashon industry continues the ongoing commitment to the floral trend for yet another Spring/Summer season. Floral motifs, signature prints and applique all channel the romantic aspect of Spring, continuing to blossom and bloom for another season and you can follow the iconic trend through items available at Westquay

that will last you for future seasons. Floral dresses were popular across the catwalk and range from ditsy floral motifs to Liberty London inspired prints. Whether you opt for floral accessories for a subtler nod to the trend or wear full frontal floral - spring summer wouldn’t be spring summer without floral dresses perfect for the warmer weather. You can also adopt other SS18 trends by opting for florals that combine bright primary colours or pastel shades or sheer fabrics.

Silhouettes have become thinner but wider, with many implementing visor-like lens, which, granted, could make you look like you’re competing in the Tour de France – lycra optional – and have been worn by celebs everywhere from the likes of Kimmy K, to Stranger Things teen Millie Bobby Brown.

Square Eyes Keeping with the retro theme, styles have been leaning towards the boxier end of the spectrum. Square or rectangle? The choice is yours. Choose sharp, square edges for a bad-ass feel, or opt for a chunky rectangular frame for a look more nostalgic, laid back approach. H&M Sunglasses with sparkly stones- Grey £5.49 Retro Cat-Eye

Zara Extreme Cat Eye – Red, £15.99

A New Underwear Essential Mix up your lingerie choice for a refresh this Spring W O R D S B Y E L L I E O AT E N

In the modern world, lingerie is a common currency between women across the planet. Few can deny that there is a rousing delight that comes from decadent lingerie. The definition of ‘decadent’, however, can vary person to person. Some favour luscious barely-there sets, while for others it’s beige separates that, frankly, have seen better days, some women can experience separation anxiety over being split up from The One. Underwear is a choice that every lady must make when getting dressed, intimately replicating the essence of a lady’s personal tastes and demands, an appropriation tailored towards the individual. To many, there is a certain level of satisfaction that comes from donning their favourite pair of pants – is there many other things that compete with the knowledge that your most prized possession will be housed comfortably for the duration of the day? While society tames most women’s clothing, whether this through uniforms, work dress codes or simply what is deemed socially acceptable, lingerie defies these restrictions. Historically, underwear has been mistaken as a constant course of romantic seduction. Unknown to many of the opposite sex, the correct undergarments can force an empowered emotion into many lingerie wearers.

One of the perks of wearing a bralette is that the lack of under wiring and padding results in a more comfortable fit: a reassuring squeeze of your hand, as opposed to a strong iron grip. The bralette is the lazy Sunday morning of the bra world, perfect for those moments where you’re looking to adopt a more relaxed physique, with the added feminine allure of delicate lace and soft materials in opulent shades. The range of bralette designs being sold within Westquay are widening dramatically. Brands like Next, Victoria’s Secret and New Look are extending their range of designs on offer, following the Autumn Winter 17/18 highlights of sheer mesh, harness-inspired structures and high-neck bras. Dainty mesh in romantic blush, gold and amethyst are upon offer, contrasted with sets in seductive jewel tones, such as peacock, ruby and classic, but chic, black. Many pairings are offering minimalist compositions, perfect for everyday wear, while heavily appliqued floral designs remain popular.

You might be wearing a demure work blouse, but underneath, on the items that are most closely situated to your skin, your body is complimented by a web of scarlet lace - a secret shout of unchaste desires. Although your gym kit might be soiled with sweat and a face to match, hidden below, a good sports bra could be the crucial piece of kit that, no only helps you beat your PB, but gives you the equipment Once exclusively for women with cup sizes D and under, brands are and consequent power to believe that you could beat your PB. beginning to expand their repertoire. Boux Avenue, who have expanded their range of D+ designs to bralettes, adding under wiring, a higher apex When it comes to lingerie, it’s not uncommon to stick to what you know. The and light padding where necessary, without compromising on elegance same cut, style and brand in a variation of colours for the sake of ease. Why and delicacy fix something that isn’t broken? Underwear shopping is already as close to hell as it gets, without adding a plethora of designs, a bout of a comfort eating and a series of Googles such as “how to look like Beyoncé” into the Waistbands are creeping up higher, as Westquay store holder M&S mix. But, in fact, a lot can be said for the resulting feeling of mixing it up reports that full briefs have become the most popular knicker shape, every once in a while. It allows you the opportunity to undertake a variety firmly knocking the Brazilian off the top spot. If the idea of moving of different characteristics to suit your emotions that day, your needs, or towards a bralette seems daunting, then why not opt for one of these the occasion – wink, wink. If there are only a few items in your collection high waisted designs? Not only do they ooze a retro nostalgia, they that offer you some kind of pleasure, then what are you waiting for? cover all the bits and bobs which women usually are keen to hide. Church Style Tips

PHOTO: TINEVIMBO MUPFACHA

WORDS BY BREN MUPA

Every place and occasion has suitable fashion to go with it. Clothing matters when it comes to worship. As much as one cannot wear gumboots and an overall to the beach on a sunny day is the same way we have to dress appropriately for church.

A

ppropriate is relative according to individuals. Some worship events have now become relaxed and informal, though some congregations remain divided between traditional and contemporary styles. In some places, the contemporary has an upper hand because of time which keeps moving and fashion trends have changed over the years. People have come to an understanding that people look at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart. One can look fashionable on a Sunday and still be on God’s good list, my few style tips will send you straight to heaven. Staying away from dresses that are too tight and above the knees is a good idea. A short dress and high knee boots scream “club” and this might not be appropriate for church. A shift dress is a good fashionable piece and one can achieve a statement look and still remain modest. Adding a cardigan will complete the look and earring studs would complete the look. This kind of dress can be paired with a colourful cardigan and a pair of heels to complete the look. If you are not into dresses maybe considering a pencil skirt is a great idea; just make sure it’s not extremely tight as you will want to leave that for your next hot date. They are not only feminine but also look good on most body types. This can be paired with a simple white tee and trainers to finish the look. If you are a pants kind of chica why not pick your favourite black pants and you can dress them up by adding a blazer

and a shirt that you can tuck in. Avoid stretchy pants/ leggings or jeans as they exaggerate the body. A pair of stilettos can add a sophisticated touch to the look. Pumps are also a great choice to wear with a shift dress, a pencil skirt or pants as they are very comfortable. By all means, the dress code for churches do vary, so you need take into account which kind of church you will be attending. A church is a sacred place of worship, not a place to flaunt your long legs. Sometimes beauty is best when shown less as the saying goes; “less is more”. colours or pastel shades or sheer fabrics.

IMAGE

Bren’s Top Tips Try staying away from shorts, see-through blouses, and flip-flops, tight or short dresses and skirts. You can wear your jeans or pants with pretty much everything. Just be sure you stay away from pairing them with spaghetti tops and crop tops. Avoid wearing tops that show so much cleavage or dressing in a way that would send a wrong message that goes against your principle of belief. When one dresses for the church it is expected that they do so in a way that reflects the standards and morals of that particular church. While the church is social gathering just bear in mind that it’s not a nightout or a party with friends. One can be modest and still look fashionable at the same time avoiding offending other church members due to dressing inappropriately.

hether you are attending a traditional, outdoor or destination wedding this year, Phase Eight have a wide selection of sophisticated Spring/ Summer dresses, guaranteeing you the perfect wedding guest ensemble. From floral to fishtail, the designer brand have collated a beautiful range of outfits with the most popular trends in mind. With such a huge variety on offer, with multiple different styles, no matter what your taste, Phase Eight have got you covered.

Simplistic Style For those of you who like to keep it sweet and simple, we think you are going to love the Ruby, Valentina and Willa dresses. The nude colours work stunningly by themselves with each dress working their own subtle details, or you opt for braver choices in accessories. With stunning embroidery, tie waist or fit and flare style, which is your favourite?

Floral & Lace So, as cliché and unsurprising as it is… florals and lace are back this Spring/Summer. There is a reason this trend is so popular and we cannot see it being demoted to the back of the wardrobe just yet. For the ladies who like to emphasise their feminine side, we think either the Suki, Sable or Peony dress is the ideal choice for you. With all styles either having a belt or cinched in waist, these pieces are sure to accentuate your curves in all the right places.

Green Power One of the biggest trends this year is (believe it or not) the colour green. With most people’s initial reaction to green being ‘yuck’, we have compiled a couple of tips for those of you who may be considering this complex colour. The general rule of thumb is the lighter your skin, the darker shade of green you should go. If you are extremely fair we would suggest

W E S T Q U AY M A G A Z I N E | 1 8

going with a bottle green, much like the Pascale Dress. If your skin is darker in tone then a bright green like the Morganna Frill or Kathy Shirt dress will compliment you perfectly. If you are a redhead then pick whichever shade you like - you look flawless in all of them! If you are hoping to make a statement with your wedding attire, then green is the way to go.

Maxed-Out Short and midi dresses are not to everyone’s taste, so here is a selection of maxi dresses perfect for any wedding guest. All three styles are extremely flattering in fit with a tie or fitted waist, as to not swamp the body. If you are attending an event the requires you to bring your ultimate ‘A’ game, then the full length Sabine Tulle Dress is the one. Want to stand out and take a step back from the florals? The Colour Block Maxi and Tally Maxi will most definitely turn some heads.

Summer Sleeves Lastly, if you are a lady who prefers to keep your arms covered, then Phase Eight have a variety of long sleeved dresses to choose from. These long sleeved beauties mean you will not require a jacket, which is ideal for outdoor weddings. The sheerness of the material allows for full coverage yet still airy enough to ensure comfort. The sophisticated and elegant design of the dresses speak for themselves. With the Nissa and Sorina dresses both bodycon in style and the Antonetta dress fit and flared, you can pick whichever style you feel most confident in. Remember, no outfit is complete without the right accessories. Head over to West Quay Phase Eight now for your matching shoes and clutch!

Put a Spring in your step with Zara’s SS18 Menswear

Zara kick off their Spring and Summer edit for 2018 with their latest menswear range. WORDS BY LAUREN BRADLEY

I

t might seem like winter has barely left us, but it is never too early to start adding bright spring additions to your wardrobe - you can never have too many clothes! So, if you’re into affordable fashion and looking to update your style for the new season, it is essential that you take a look at this campaign. Their new collection is all about dressing up in a dressed down manner. It’s made up of a variety of garments, including pirnted baggy shirts with matching chino trousers, trench coats, bomber jackets and patterned jumpers. All of which are incredibly comfortable but give an image of someone who is well put together. The running theme across the collection seems to be a 70’s/80’s vibe, infusing pastel colours with quirky prints, allowing you to step into the season whilst being comfortable, but also on trend.

that it can be paired with pretty much anything (depending in the colour); wear it with one of Zara’s quirky shirts, or dressan outfit down by wearing it with chinos, the options are endless. Accessories are a major part of their collection too, but in a understated fashion. Black leather tote bags, backpacks and even men’s clutch bags feature in the range, making your day more practical when going from A to B. And if you’re someone who is looking for a more affordable pair of glasses, it may be worth considering Zara’s new metal framed retro glasses -other styles are also available, giving you a pair for every outfit choice.

They have also put a spin on the classic style of suits. Keeping with the quirky theme, suit jackets with matching trousers are available in a black, white and grey grid print, so you can make a statement in the office. Add a loose fitting chunky belt and a pair of zip up Chelsea boots to your outfit (available in just leather or leather with a suede finish) and you’re ready to go. The British summer can never really be called ‘summer’ as the weather is often unpredicatble, so a lightweight bomber jacket can go a long way into making those less warmer days more bearable. And the best thing about a bomber jacket is

Comfort

Over Style WORDS BY BREN MUPA

Kids fashion has come a long way over decades, it has moved from the classic kiddy clothes to the most fashionable clothes that even as adults we could wear. Most children are exposed to smartphones hence they are aware of what’s trending and the celebrity culture around them. They are more aware than we were because of the advanced technology and the connected world that is there now. But kids should still be kids, right?

I

t is easy to go over the top with the style and glamour of kids. Children look beautiful in almost everything they were but it is definitely up to the parents to keep them looking good and most importantly comfortable. As much I am all for style and all things fashionable you are not going to see me recommending a 3-inch heel for girls. For children, I choose comfort over style because it is important for kids to feel comfortable and to be flexible in their clothes. They should free to run around and play how they like and not to be restricted by what they will be wearing. When you do choose a girl’s party dress or a boy’s suit for a special occasion like a party or christening service, be sure that the fabric breathes and cut allows the child to be a child. One should ask themselves questions when choosing an outfit for the child: Can your daughter comfortably play, run, bend over, sit, or twirl in her dress? Can your son climb, jump, in his trousers? As a parent are you able to relax during the event without worrying that they will rip, tear, or stain their outfit? If you happen to answer “no” to any of these questions then the outfit, as beautiful and cute as it may be, might not be practically the right outfit for that particular occasion and might not be suitable

W E S T Q U AY M A G A Z I N E | 4 2

for your family’s lifestyle. Avoid kids clothes that have lots of buttons because such details can easily fall off or go missing while the child plays or in the daily washing of the clothes. Stay clear of outfits that your child needs a lot of help when putting on or taking off. The dressing should be fun rather than being stressful. It is important to dress your child for the weather rather just concentrating on the style. It’s okay for an adult to put on a boob tube dress and leave the coat behind for a Christmas party because they don’t want to deal with the hassle of a coat check, but our children can’t make that decision.

IMAGE

It is exciting to dress our little ones, and very tempting to make all the decisions on how they dress. Let your kids participate in choosing what they wear. If they are toddlers between the age of 2 and 4, begin by giving them options to choose from. You could start by letting them choose between two options, “which dress do you want to wear today? This one or this one?” Not only does this teach them independence it is empowering and it helps them gain confidence. It also makes them active participants whenever they dress up. You could practice routine when shopping too, let the kids choose their own clothes by giving them a few selections to choose from, depending on their age and apprehension. See how they put cloth pieces together; even if it looks funny and weird ask them why they made that choice in a non-judgemental way. While they are our mini-mes, they are individuals with their own tastes and style. By asking them the questions and leaving them to choose their own clothes, you are helping them express their opinions without restrictions. You get to know them and learn more in the process.

Interior Trends of 2018 WORDS BY BETHAN ANDREWS

Homeware and furniture are popular purchases to update any home, much like you buy new clothes and beauty products as the seasons change. Make sure your house is as on trend as you are with these upcoming interior trends. You may have already seen some collections and pieces in stores, but this is the low down on all the trends you need to know.

V

elvet is a luxurious texture to introduce, perfect in crushed, printed or classic styles. Velvet can be found in all colours, look for dark neutrals such as grey’s and navy’s or be bolder with an on trend millennial pink or bright orange. Pieces to look out for include soft furnishing like cushions and throws, chairs and footstalls and quirkier items like lamps or rugs. Industrial décor has been a growing trend in the past year with many restaurants choosing heavily industrial interiors that are chic and well styled. Now it is becoming popular to style your home in a similar way. This look can be achieved with character that you may already have or may be hiding in your home, think exposed brick and beams, concrete and taking up carpets to expose wooden or concrete floors that can be polished or varnished. Furniture such as coffee tables and shelving units are available in a range of industrial looks, using metal, wood or cables. The most sort after industrial pieces will be lighting, ceiling or floor lamps that incorporate wooden legs and metal housing for large bulbs. Scandi is a continuing trend that isn’t going away, its moved on from just flat pack furniture. To truly master the modern Scandi look use natural fabrics and colours. Loosely woven baskets and rugs are easy to add to a room, furniture is often simple and uses a lighter wood with a seat of wicker or similar fabric. To break up the neutrals add some greenery indoors or fake plants if you forget to water them.

W E S T Q U AY M A G A Z I N E | 4 4

Country or rustic is a key trend to look out for, think vintage and distressing in neutral colours such as cream and sage green. Wild floral prints or fake flowers can be perfectly matched with a mix of vases and jugs. Botanical prints can be quirkier with insects as the main focus. Wooden or stone floors with a weathered finish are timeless and keep the room cool in warmer months. Plaid is a popular print for armchairs or soft furnishings in muted and natural colours, if you really want to embrace the cottage feel. Green is the colour of the year, and you’ll be seeing it in a variety of shades and placements. A classic leaf green in the form of plants, both real and fake are simple flourishes to update any room. A bold tropical print on walls, bedding or soft furnishings can easily change the overall feel and look of a space. Try a deep, emerald green for a more luxurious vibe and mix textures to really keep it modern and stylish. Global, think well-travelled and not cluttered, whether you’ve bought them all in the same store or collected them from across the globe. Transform your living room into a Moroccan bazar with rich and bright colours and patterns on soft furnishings and rugs. Touches of various metals on furniture and accessories such as side tables and lamps add to a natural eclecticism. Exotic animals used in prints are quirky and mix global with alternative style.

Statement Furniture for 2018 WORDS BY BETHAN ANDREWS

Key pieces and capsule wardrobes have always been popular in fashion and styling, but why not in your home? Here’s how to invest in one piece of furniture that will instantly update any room. Fall in love with making a statement and build your décor to nest around that love.

L

uscious velvet is the perfect fabric for statement sofas and chairs to make everybody jealous. A rich colour palette is the only pairing for this lavish texture, think mustard, purple, pink, navy and green. Short legs in dark wood or metal with a deep seat is the only way to relax in style. Add a fluffy cushion for the ultimate place to chill.

Industrial lighting is the only way to illuminate your home. Opt for sleek designs and a variety of tones for a current look worthy of being an artistic centrepiece. Warm bulbs are a must to create the perfect ambience and mood. Hang low above the dining table for an intimate feel or larger lighting above a bed or living room to make the most of the space.

Make any room cosy and cool with dark wood. Look for a mix of grains and direction of wood panels for a stylish and stand out piece. The only chest of drawers to store your belongings, or coffee table to draw attention while oozing extravagance. Look for metal finishing’s for a fusion of modern and luxury.

Luxury beds are made by having the best headboards and upholstered is the only choice. Classic neutrals form a calm setting to clear your mind, while opulent, deep colours craft a focal point to relax into sweet dreams. Choose a design you adore and from a range of fabrics, like leather or velvet. You can sleep easy knowing your always on trend.

HOME DÉCOR: HOW TO BRIGHTEN A DARK ROOM FOR SUMMER WORDS BY LAUREN SMITH

Follow these simple tips and tricks to turn your dull and dreary room into a sunnier space. No demolition required!

W

hen you think Winter, you think dark and cosy. Low, atmospheric lighting for those quiet nights in that start in he afternoon when the sun goes down. The darkness brings comfort alongside candlelit film marathons and snacks around the Christmas period. But what about when that’s all over and the Summer months creep closer?

MINIMALISM Minimalism is key when it comes to soft furnishing. From coffee tables to cushions, clutter will only make a room appear smaller and intensify the feeling of tight space.

Dark décor is currently on trend. If you flick the pages of interior magazines or on the odd occasion, get lost in the world of Pinterest (we’re all guilty of it) then you’ll notice the surge of navy feature walls and monochrome accessories. It’s bold with plenty of potential to look stunning but equally, runs the risk of feeling dim and oppressive.

£540

Light is a beautiful thing. It may appear a strange statement but light instantly lifts both you and your mind and when it comes to your home, it instantly makes for a more welcoming environment. Whether you’ve simply opted for a dark colour on your walls or your house is facing in the wrong direction and natural light is limited, brightness isn’t impossible to access.

£30

Before you start considering knocking down walls and having to completely re-design and re-furnish your entire home, we’re here to tell you that major renovations are totally unnecessary. You can transform a darker home by following these quick tricks to optimise what you already have and the gloomy feel surrounding your current living space will be a thing of the past. John Lewis is home to countless accessories that will help to increase light levels, even if it only be an illusion. We’ve picked out a selection of products that will help you brighten your space and make it all seem that little bit bigger and better.

£195

MIRRORS Mirrors are a sure-fire way to create the illusion of your home being bigger than it is. Darker rooms can appear small and confined so by placing a mirror or two around, it will open up your space and make it appear larger.

They will also increase the amount of natural light available. By placing a mirror directly opposite a window, the sunlight will bounce off the reflective surface and brighten up corners of the room that may not attract as much light. 4 9 | W E S T Q U AY M A G A Z I N E

Bring M&S into Your Kitchen This Spring

BRIGHT ARTWORK Artwork can make or break a room and picking out something specific that will work for your room can be challenging. Naturally if you’re trying to lift a room, dark art is a total no go, as are pieces too big as they will absorb light rather than reflect it. Light and colourful pieces are more likely to complement the room.

METALLICS

£40

Re-vamp your kitchen this season with Marks and Spencer’s new SS18 collection. If you’re bored of having the same old utensils and furniture that you’ve had for years, and want to create a spacious room for family and friends, or maybe even just add more to the room you’ve already put together, then it is definitely worth a look. £50 £30

Metallic accessories are seriously on trend meaning they’re easy to get hold of. Not only will they look great, but they’ll reflect even more light and illuminate a dark space. There’s no need to go copper crazy but a few metallic touches will be a guaranteed success.

£6

£240

ACCESSORISE CORRECTLY Speaking of accessories, getting it right is crucial. The trick is to opt for bright, colourful pieces and if you are drawn to the dark side, use deep shades sparingly. Another great way to keep things light and fresher is to add greenery. By simply adding a few house plants you can reduce stress, increase feelings of calm and relaxation and brighten your space. No, you don’t need to splash out on a fresh bouquet every week. You can even achieve that feeling with faux plants and succulents!

T

he phrase ‘less is more’ comes to mind with their latest kitchenware collection, with rooms that have spacious designs and neutral colours. Cool blues and mint greens are the shades you need to use to not only neutralise a room, but make it cooler during the spring/summer season, giving you and your guests a soothing place to relax after being in the sun all day. However, yellow features throughout the collection too with subtle prints on cushions, curtains and throws, adding that dash of colour to bring your kitchen to life.

Minimalistic stylings can go a long way in creating a space that you long to be in, as busy designs can sometimes clutter your mind, simple subtle objects and furniture allows your mind to be calmer as there is less to take in. And being calm whilst cooking is what everyone aims for! The Marks and Spencer oak furniture range is rustic yet simplistic, giving the impression of a country styled kitchen without the fuss. It consists of oak dining tables and matching chairs, allowing you to bring the family together for home cooked meals. When it comes to actually doing the cooking however, you’re going to need pots and pans that won’t let you down. Try out their extensive range of non-stick pans, to ensure that dinner doesn’t get ruined by not making it to the plate! And utilise their deep cooking pots to make meals for big groups or enough that can be frozen down for another day. Their new range has something for every occasion. Although what’s on the table is equally as important, hi-ball glasses alongside a range of serving bowls can be laid out to show that the area is communal. Followed by token items such as wooden pizza serving boards for themed food nights.

To achieve a light kitchen with a fresh feel, add small potted plants to the room. Faux or real, adding hints of green brings the room to life. Accompanied by the trio of Toby Lights, available in both neutral or cream, the space will be well-lit both morning and night. The easy (& cheap) way of life: With Flying Tiger Copenhagen

M

oving to university can be one of the most daunting experiences of adolescent life. Not only are students taking their first stepping stones to their future career but they also having to move to a new city and making new friends. It’s also fair to say, student living isn’t always cheap and finding cheap deals or inexpensive products is ideal for the student way of life. Someone’s living space is an area full of comfort and relaxation. Some students can’t afford a glamorous bedroom, but it can be much simpler than that. Hundreds don’t have to be spent to make your space look appealing, it is much more about comfort, like the Danish word hygge. Hygge, pronounced hueguh not hoo-gah is a Danish word used when acknowledging a feeling or moment, whether alone or with friends, ordinary or extraordinary as cosy, charming or special.

Once the space around you is comforting, relaxing and makes you feel positive, there are more ways to help destress from the anxieties of the world. Pamper yourself – paint your nails, do a face mask or even practice your make-up skills. Flying Tiger Copenhagen has all the tools you need for a cosy, stress-free night in. With so much stress, pressure and anxiety often circling any adolescents’ life, it’s always important to stay focused and positive. Relax, take time for yourself and feel comforted. Flying Tiger Copenhagen believe that “human relationships and social experiences bring people joy”, therefore they don’t currently sell products from their website, although you can browse on there. All products mentioned can be found in the Southampton store, as well as the three hundred new products that find their way into stores every month.

The Danish created Hygge because they were trying to survive boredom, cold, dark and sameness and the undefinable feeling of Hygge was a way for them to find moments to celebrate or acknowledge. This can have strong relations with the life people experience while at University. Students often have to survive things like boredom, coldness and sameness, which is why Hygge is a fitting way of life for adolescents undergoing stress. Flying Tiger Copenhagen is often described as a ‘smaller, more random Ikea’ with its Scandinavian ethos and one-way system store layout. The Danish store first opened in Copenhagen in 1995 as Tiger, before the company began its rebranding with new store uniform and a new name. There are no over 630 stores across the globe, with more opening every month. Each store is filled with products for every person and every occasion, whether it’s a toy, some stationary bits, something to fill the home, a funky plate or even some food, Flying Tiger has it all. Fill your room or living space with candles for those cold nights, creating a relaxing atmosphere, helping your mindset focus. Fake (or real) plants are also great buys to feel Zen in your own room. They provide you with elements of the outside world while showcasing nature’s beauty. A cosy rug can fill the space of an empty or boring floor, as well as adding colour or pattern into your space. The same thing can be done by photo frames, whether they are filled with photos of family and friends, or even comforting materials like leaves or flowers. Baby Blue Lids Reviving back to the 80s, bright blue eyeshadow is back. As seen on the catwalk from the likes of Victoria Beckham and House of Holland, who painted vibrant matte eyeshadows onto the models’ lids. If blue isn’t the shade for you then opt for purple or green as that will really make brown eyes pop. To create this look yourself the best product to use is Charlotte Tilbury’s eyes to mesmerise cream eyeshadow in the mermaid blue shade of Cleopatra. Available at John Lewis, £22.

Graphic liner Have you got a steady hand? You might need it to create these shapes and wiggles on our lids. Eyeliner is becoming pretty experimental gone are the days of standard flicks now people are creating all sorts including flicks, zig-zags and chevrons on the outer corners. To recreate the imperfect liner trend, use MAC’s Brushstroke liner pen, £18.50 from John Lewis as it’s known for its precision and long-lasting wear. W E S T Q U AY M A G A Z I N E | 5 6

Flawless, dewy bases Everybody wants supermodel skin and now you can get it. Glowing, dewy bases were all over the catwalk this season. Highlighter has been taken down a lot, with make-up artists focusing on only natural highlights; on tops of the cheeks, down your nose and on the forehead. To achieve this, it is all about skincare, taking care of your skin is much more important that piling on the foundation. So, find a routine that works for you and a good dewy mist (Pixi Glow Mist, M&S, £16) to finish of your base and you will achieve that angel like glow.

Bold lips It’s not going to be spring without bright, pink lips. However, this season gloss is making a comeback, no more matte is right but luscious glossy lips are the way forward. The shades to keep in your handbag this season are corals, ruby reds and fuchsia pinks if you are feeling really daring then you can even create the ombre effect. Despite the criticisms, The Body Shop standing alone, fighting for all makeup to be cruelty free, it also seeks ingredients which are sourced, using proceeds to help restore our rainforests and natural habitats and on-top of all this the products are incredible. Here’s how you can create a natural everyday look using some of the products that The Body Shop has to offer, not only that but it all comes in at less than £60!

SS18 SCENTS

[2]

[1]

W O R D S B Y C H L O E D AV I E S

Tiffany & Co Eau De Parfum, 30ml (£52, John Lewis) [1]

Originating from the heritage brand renowned for its little blue box and its connotations with New York, this Eau De Parfum includes notes of vert de mandarine, iris flower and patchouli to add a muskier addition to the sophisticated composition. The scent itself is floral, sensual and feminine, channelling the luxurious dreamy quality of the Big Apple. The brand’s commitment to quality can be seen in the beautiful crystal bottle inspired by the cut of the diamonds using in their jewellery, and style and sophistication are evident further due to packaging of the signature Tiffany Blue Box.

Amelie Mae Perfume, 100ml (£39, Lush Cosmetics) [2] Targeting those who like sweet scents, the raspberry notes seamlessly integrate with hints of rose to create a soft, long-lasting sweet fragrance. Sugared additions are scattered amidst lavender mixing calming, balanced elements with restorative floral qualities. Amelie Mae can be layered alongside earthy or spicy scents to transition it from a mellow day scent to evening appropriate. Many reviews liken this to a combination of popular Lush products – Rose Jam shower gel and the Twilight bath bomb so it is likely to be a firm favourite amongst Lush Cosmetics enthusiasts. Gucci Bloom Eau De Parfum, 50ml (£65, The Fragrance Shop) [3]

As the first captivating fragrance originating from the luxury brand, Bloom’s scent is rich and floral with its origin inspired by flowers in bloom. Its layered notes are natural tuberose and Jasmine, which is fused with Rangoon Creeper. The Rangoon Creeper is a flower that adapts from white to red as it blooms (which is transposed in the packaging) makes its debut in any fragrance intending to help the scent blossom and unfold like its name suggests.

Victoria’s Secret Bombshell, 50ml (£54.15, Victoria’s Secret) [4]

With notes of purple passion fruit, Shangri-La peony and vanilla orchid, Bombshell channels the attitude and confidence of the Victoria Secret angels. With fruity, fresh and floral scents, the scent is timeless whilst the bottle displays the well-known VS pink stripe design. The scents are reminiscent of sun-kissed skin, warm afternoons and tropical flowers.

River Island Paris by Night Eau de Toilette, 75ml (£14, River Island)

[5] As the name would describe, this romantic sensual perfume is suitable for evening wear and includes notes of guava and vanilla. This versatile scent is suitable for women of any age and comes packaged in a sleek black and gold bottle adorned with jewel lid fastening. The sexy scent is a dupe for Giorgio Armani Code (30ml, £50, John Lewis) and is a more accessible means of accessing ‘luxury’ scents.

CK One 200ml (£35, The Fragrance Shop) [6]

As one of the brand’s most popular and successful unisex fragrance - CK One includes notes of citrus namely mandarin orange, lemon and citrus bergamot. The scent is clean and refreshing – due to the Green Tea undernotes - and the warm additions of nutmeg mean it’s appealing to both sexes and any age group. Its timelessness transcends from its

origin in the nineties and still remains in the classic iconic frosted bottle. [3]

Jo Malone Amber and Lavender Cologne, 100ml (£90, John Lewis) [7]

[2]

Described as warm due to its amber undertones, this classic scent also combines notes of French lavender, cinnamon and myrrh seamlessly combined to form a clean and spicy blend. Starting as a strong aromatic scent, the fragrance softens and develops into a warm, fragrant musk and can be layered to form a sophisticated unique combination. The classic Jo Malone label makes this a staple.

L’Occitane Verbena Eau de Toilette, 100ml (£46, John Lewis)

[8] Ideal for everyday wear, the Verbena leaf patterned bottle highlights the inclusion of zesty Verbena alongside geranium. Its further notes of citrus fruits like orange and lemon contrast with base notes of rose to formulate a unisex fragrance. With a natural and fresh scent, Verbena is perfect for the Spring/Summer period and is long-lasting and refreshing.

[4]

[7]

[6]

[3]

One Eau De Toilette, 50ml (£34.95, Jack Wills) [9]

Inspired by the brand’s British heritage, One has a woody masculine scent. Made in the UK itself, the scent combines notes of bergamot and mandarin at its base, with the additions of spicier tones including cardamom, and saffron as well as some warm floral touches. Using traditional perfumery techniques, additions of vanilla and cedarwood transition it into the contemporary.

[8]

[12]

Activist Eau De Toilette, 100ml (£16, The Body Shop) [10]

The male scent suitable for daytime use is warm and spicy with an underlying woody almost tobacco edge. Uplifting, spicy and sweet, with additions of black pepper and vanilla, it settles warmly with notes of amber and wood tones. Activist is part of a small collection of male fragrances by The Body Shop who pride themselves on being cruelty free.

Diesel Only the Brave Eau de Toilette, 125ml (£59.50, The Fragrance Shop) [11]

[9] [10]

With an iconic fist shaped bottle, Only the Brave contains citrus notes of lemon and mandarin orange. Its freshness is contrasted to strong additions of leather and coriander to form a masculine woody accord. Its longevity, fragrant components and packaging usually mean this is popular with the younger male demographic.

Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette, 100ml (£69.50, The Fragrance Shop)

[12] Inspired by large open spaces it comes as no surprise that many of the notes derive from natural ingredients like Bergamot and has a woody element due to Ambroxan, which is derived from ambergris. The simplistic fresh composition is exemplified in the subtle ombré bottle in classic black with the ozone blue sky at the base. Though the packing design may be subtle, the scent itself is radiant, fresh and powerful. themselves on being cruelty free.

FAUX GLOW: THE BEST PRODUCTS FOR THE PERFECT TAN

John Lewis, Clinique Body Tinted Lotion 125ml (£20)

A more traditional fake tan with a twist. Tanning mousses are full proof for an all over sun kissed finish however, James Read has levelled up and created a mousse that develops twice as fast. Within an hour you can achieve a light golden tan. It takes two hours for a medium glow and three hours for a deep bronze look. This express bronzing mousse not only conditions your skin but is also fragrance free so you can kiss goodbye to the classic ‘biscuit’ smell.

There’s a real stigma around fake tanning but the truth is, everyone does it. Whether you’re naturally pale or simply want bronzed skin without the UV damage, self-tan is your answer.

W

Black Stockings Body Tint Bar, LUSH (£8.50) Designed to balance out your skintone, the LUSH body tint bar is the perfect every day solution if you prefer something more subtle and convenient. Melt the bar onto clean skin wherever you want to add a bit of colour. It’s coppery pigment and hint of shimmer gives a realistic tan and healthy looking bronze shine that’s fool proof for sunny days.

It’s no surprise that this innovative product with such a luxury feel comes from Vita Liberata. If you wish to use it as a tanning agent, apply as normal. It can be rinsed after an hour but for optimum results there is a suggested wait time of eight hours. However, the brand have created the world’s only self-tan with SPF50, making for the perfect holiday bronzing solution. You can use the Marula Dry Oil as sun protection. Apply it fifteen minutes before exposure to the sun and re-apply at least every two hours.

Another targeted self-tan but this time, for your legs because sometimes when you put on a pretty summer dress, lily white limbs just don’t have the same effect. This gel bronzing mist is the perfect quick fix. It’s lightweight and oil free, meaning there’s no shimmer and doesn’t transfer onto your clothes. Simply spritz onto your legs to apply, blend evenly straight away and wait a few minutes before dressing. You’ll be left with a natural colour and be beach ready within minutes! James Read Express Bronzing Mousse, Marks & Spencer (£30)

WORDS BY LAUREN SMITH

ith over 57% of women saying that a tan makes them feel more attractive, the power of a tan is undeniable. There’s something about a sun kissed complexion that alters our minds and the way we see ourselves. Even when the sun’s not shining, bronzed, healthier looking skin gives us a confidence boost. Everyone lusts after glowing skin all year round but with summer fast approaching, soon enough it’ll be time to bare a bit of skin. Luckily, if you’re not fortunate enough to be jetting off any time soon you’ve plenty of options. The self-tan market can be intimidating. Faux glows are in high demand and therefore, new releases pop up every year making it almost impossible to find the perfect product. The choices are endless with different formulas and shades for each and every skin type. We’re here to give you the glowdown with a host of hassle free self-tanners.

Honey Bronze Tinted Leg Mist, The Body Shop (£16)

From Marks & Spencer’s own range, this tanning oil is easy to use and glides on the skin. The lightweight formula means it dries quickly and the smooth application makes it easy to avoid streaks. The colour develops over four hours and lasts up to three days before fading evenly with exfoliation.

Clinique’s tinted lotion works as both an instant and gradual tanner. Initial application leaves you with a natural glow. It also shows where it goes so when it develops, you’re left with no streaky surprises. After a few hours, you’ll be left with a more golden tan lasting a few days. It’s oil free, tested by dermatologists and 100% fragrance free. It’s sure to change your tanning game. Clarins Instant Smooth Self Tanning, John Lewis (£20) We all know the struggle of being tanned and not being able to match our face and neck to the rest of our body. This creamy mousse is for exactly that. Winner of Best Face Tan in Harper’s Bazaar’s 2013 Beauty Hot 100, this self-tan has the same benefits as Clarins’ best- selling Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch with a tanning agent that later develops after application. The formula melts into your skin and will leave you with a radiant but subtle healthy glow. Go forth and glow!

Miniatures are often forgotten when shopping at the beauty counter in John Lewis. Often associated with freebies and magazine testers, smaller sized products are usually disregarded. hen purchasing from a new brand or investing in a completely new item that you may not be 100% sure you’ll like, buying a miniature is a great way to test it out. You’re then able to decide if you want to upgrade to full-size next time, or if the product is not for you, you haven’t wasted your money. With holidays season fast approaching, all of these mini’s are under 100ml, so perfect for your carry on, whilst being an allimportant space saver. Jo Malone is everybody’s favourite place to pick up a scent. The luxury aromas, packaging and service put this high-end brand on top of the smell game. Whilst offering sprays, lotions, candles and skincare, the Tasting Bar’s provide many complimentary scented experiences. You can book with your local boutique to enjoy a hand and arm massage, discover the perfect scent for you and even select your wedding aroma.

A skin tint should be on everyone’s list of essential beauty items. This Liz Earl tinted moisturiser is long-wearing, light and silky on the skin. Whilst smoothing and brightening, this skin tint leaves your face looking radiant and healthy. Whilst being full coverage the formula feels lightweight and dewy. This new Sheer Skin Tint is also available in 3 colours and is available in a bronzing fluid for a deeper colour and more buildable coverage. Also perfect for slipping in your pocket when you don’t want to go completely bare-faced at the gym, or even putting a little on whilst relaxing on holiday to help make your face a little more flawless, also with added SPF 15 for extra protection. This 40ML bottle is £24.50.

Looking after your eyes and the skin around them is so important. Protecting yourself from harsh perfumes and harsh textures around the eye area can have huge benefits for the delicate skin. The Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream does just that. Great for use in both the morning and evening, the cream soaks in quickly leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth. It prepares the under eye area for concealer, acting as a primer and also keeps the skin moisturised throughout the night. Just a small amount under each eye will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and keep you feeling refreshed for up to 24 hours.

This recommended fragrance is French Lime Blossom. The smells represent a heady, musky summer in Paris. However, if that’s not your thing there are many other more fresh perfumed options amongst the Jo Malone counter. These travel-sized sprays do hang around for longer than you think, both on your person and in the bottle. Due to the intensity of most Jo Malone fragrances, you don’t need 19 puffs before you start smelling sweet. You can afford to use these bottles sparingly, and the aroma lingers with you for up to 5 hours. This size of spray is ideal for slipping in your handbag and touching up your scent when you’re on the go all day long, and not to mention the bottle and packaging is so elegant it is an unflawed accessory.

This 15ML bottle is £33.00.

This 30ML bottle is £45. The moisturiser of the moment has got to be Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream. The myth is that this moisturiser is only for those that suffer from particularly dry skin, incorrect. It is intense, yes, but it’s fast absorbing nature and soothing properties makes it suitable for all skin types. The award-winning moisturiser was developed by Elizabeth Arden in 1930 and became an instant success. The apricot fragrance leaves your skin feeling fresh, although a non-scented version is available. There are so many different variations of this cream available; you’re bound to find one that fits your skincare needs. The collection includes a Sun Defence Cream, Nighttime Miracle Moisturiser and even Eight Hour Cream Lip Protectants. This particular face moisturiser also has SPF 15 to further protect your skin, a great little accessory for your holidays.

Most people would agree that the fresh feeling of removing your make up at the end of the day is unbeatable. Well, it just got even better when using the Clinique Naturally Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. 24Hours in Brighton with Thomas Cook W O R D S B Y Z O E Y H AY N E S

Outrageous, colourful and containing more cheek than a nudist beach, Brighton was a city I couldn’t wait to explore.

Brighton is known for being Britain’s most colourful and fascinating city. I’d never been to Brighton but with being fiercely all-season and acquiring a certain London sophistication in recent years I knew I was in for a treat. If you’ve never been to Brighton before and you’re looking to place a creative edge on your shopping, the Laines is the city’s historic quarter with an astounding maze of twisting alleyways all full of hidden gems. Heading down towards the north Laine District walking alongside street performers graciously carving sculptures out of sand, and tourists eating whilst relaxing in the midday sun on the pebbled beach. If you’re not the type of person to take to the sky using the unique British Airways 360i then believe it or not, Brighton is very much a walkable city, despite what you’ve heard about the undulating hills that flow from the South Downs. It’s safe to say that Brighton is full of charisma. The city itself not only represents the tranquillity of the classical regency and Victorian architecture but also twists into the modernday fantasy.

The Sea Breeze Hotel

Despite being a city with a Londoners touch, it’s not as expensive. The Sea Breeze hotel lets you stay in the heart of Brighton, walking distance from the Wheel, Brighton’s Sea Life Centre and of course the beautiful coast. From only £27 per person when booked through Thomas Cook, you can be in the depth of the excitement but with the comfort of your own home.

ost people will agree that one of the greatest luxuries in life is dining out, being waited upon and served delicious food that you love. However, when trying to eat healthily and mindfully, it can be difficult to work around your social life. You may find yourself passing on opportunities to eat out and sacrificing quality time with family and friends in fear of ‘ruining’ your diet and the dreaded guilt that follows. Luckily for you, we are here to say that doesn’t need to be the case as West Quay have a huge variety of dining options to suit all dietary requirements. From this selection we have gathered the healthiest dishes from some of our most popular restaurants, with all the nutritional information you may need. We’ve also included some top tips and tricks to bear in mind when dining out.

SEE DESCRIPTON FOR ALL 3 MEZES MACROS

The Real Greek is a great place to go if you like family style dining and trying multiple foods. With the restaurant recommending 3 mezes (dishes) per person we think these will liven up your taste buds whilst managing to stay on track with each choice under 200 calories! (Unless you are aware of the nutrition in other people’s mezes, perhaps stick to your own).

TIPS WHEN DINING OUT 1. Look at the menu beforehand if you know you are going out. Preparation is the key to success. 2. If in doubt about any nutritional information (or lack of), do not be afraid to ask staff. You will not be laughed at or judged. 3. The most important advice of all: cut yourself some slack. Eating healthy should not be seen as an obstacle. Mindful eating should be part of everyday life and if you are eating well 99% of the time, treating yourself to a pudding when you are out every once in a while will not cause any disastrous results!

ZIZZI SKINNY KING PRAWN DIAVOLA Going to any Italian restaurant and trying to eat well will always be difficult. However, Zizzi’s selection of skinny pizzas are an absolute game changer. If you have saved yourself extra macros throughout the day for this one meal, then grab yourself this protein packed pizza. Steak is a great option if you are trying to keep your carbohydrates low and need extra protein. The high fat content may be off-putting to some people but consuming fat in moderation is not bad. All Things

Avocado WORDS BY ELEANOR HOARE

W

e’ve all seen the massive craze lately that’s hit our social media screens and shops. So much so whole restaurants have dedicated themselves to the fruit alone, retailers have produced homeware in its honour and even your family and friends are all giving it a try. What is it about the fruit that makes it worthy to have a dedicated bedding and phone case range? It comes as no surprise this fruit has a rich history to match its interior. According to legend, a Mayan princess ate the first avocado way back in 291 B.C. Typically nicknamed the “alligator pear” the avocado is a delicious, healthy wholefood that is loaded with healthy fats and fibres that both women and men should eat whenever they can due to its many nutritional and healing qualities. Unlike most of fruits, the avocado fruit does not ripen on the tree. Instead, it will fall off in a hard, “green” state before quickly ripening on the ground. Or once picked and kept at natural outside or room temperature, it will ripen in 3-6 days. So, lets get down to the nitty gritty, or more accurately the silky smooth goodness that is the awesome avocado.

1.

They contain more potassium than bananas: Averaging at a 100-gram serving, the avocado contains 14% of the RDA in comparison to 10% in bananas, which are known for their high potassium levels. A high potassium intake has been known to correlate in the reduction of blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes and kidney failures.

2.

Avocado is loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids: Making up 77% of the fruit, avocado’s and avocado oil are high in monounsaturated oleic acid, a “heart healthy” fatty acid that is believed to be one of the main reasons for the health benefits of olive oil.

3.

Avocado’s are full to the brim with fibre: Fibre is an indigestible plant matter that can contribute to weight loss, reduce blood sugar spikes and is strongly correlated to a reduced risk of many diseases. Avocados tend to be high in fibre, roughly around 7% by weight, which is high in relation to its competitors. Fibre is known to target weight loss and benefit metabolic health.

4.

Eating avocados can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels: Heart disease has been identified as one of the most common cause of deaths in the world. It is known that several blood markers are linked to an increased risk including cholesterol, triglycerides, inflammatory markers and blood pressure. Numerous studies have proved that eating avocado can improve heart disease risk factors such as LDL and HDL cholesterol as well as blood triglycerides.

5.

Avocado may help prevent Cancer: Whilst there is scarce evidence that avocado may be beneficial in preventing cancer, some studies in isolated cells have shown that nutrients in avocados may contain benefits towards preventing prostate cancer and lowering side effects of chemotherapy in some cells.

6.

Avocado extract may help relieve symptoms of Arthritis: Arthritis is a thriving problem in Western countries. Consisting in many forms, often being chronic problems that people carry with them for the rest of their lives. Multiple studies have discovered that extracts from avocado soybean oil, called avocado and soybean unsaponifiables, can reduce symptoms of arthritis of the bones, called osteoarthritis. This incredible wholefood has a vast amount of multiple nutrients that aid the body and is incredibly versatile and can be adapted in many ways. Why not try them in a salad or opt for the most popular use and whip up a fresh guacamole with some salt, garlic and lime. And if that doesn’t appeal to you, simply scoop them out with a spoon and eat them plain and fuss-free. At the end of the day, avocados are an awesome food. They’re jam packed with nutrients, many of which are lacking in the modern diet and can be found in any supermarket. They are weight-loss friendly, heart healthy and… finally, taste incredible. What more could you ask for in a food?

Constructed from real hedges blocks, the space welcomes a 9,000 square foot bespoke network of passages and paths. The almost eight feet tall high hedges provide plenty of fun for the family. The height makes it difficult to peak over so visitors can work their way through the labyrinth unassisted (though the Old City Walls provide the opportunity to see routes from above if you require a little help). The free event, running from 27th March till 22nd April encourages visitors and wannabee navigators to get lost and crack the maze’s

twists and turns in a unique one-of-a-kind layout. The vast Esplanade space allows varying routes, making it challenging and exciting to navigate through. In addition, those brave enough to try and tackle the tangle of routes (and possibly get lost in the process) may locate a special code to be scanned using the Westquay PLUS app. This code unlocks a free ice cream from Hotel Chocolat which can be enjoyed following their navigational efforts – after all they would’ve earned it. Calling All Nocturnal Chocolate Enthusiasts...

WORDS BY ROSIE KINSELLA

P

icture it: A nocturnal West Quay, sealed off after hours for your exclusive VIP debut into a prosecco occupied evening of pure indulgence, ready to receive all the special treatment and knowledge from one of their Chocolate Lock In’s - who could provide such a compulsory occasion to your schedule? it’s the one and only; Hotel Chocolat. With only an intimate invitation of 10 guests, the store becomes yours for an hour of your evening. For £10 a ticket, you get to embark on an educational journey to experience firsthand knowledge from Hotel Chocolat’s School of Chocolate graduates. To name a few things you’ll be learning about, it ranges from the process of making chocolate, the Bean to Bar process, how to taste chocolate correctly, and they even allow you to try six of the latest decadent recipes! Exclusivity at its finest, not to mention it being washed down with Hotel Chocolat’s very own classic Prosecco, all the way from the Dolomite foothills. Each lock in event has a different theme each month, allowing it to then be allocated into 3 parts, The Hero of Chocolate, Cocoa Calibration and then of course the best until last; The Tasting. Throughout each division, guests are enlightened to the process of how cocoa beans are made into a chocolate bar, how cocoa flavours interact with our senses via the Olfactory theory – and if you want to get really hands on, you’re even

able to use a Pestle and Mortar to grind the beans down and be talked through the aroma’s that the bean’s release. The tasting of the chocolates is one of the most favourable parts of the evening, with the theme being the basis for what ones you’ll be able to try! Previous events with themes such as Salted Caramel even allowed for a pairing of Hotel Chocolat’s Salted Caramel Vodka Liqueur £25, hotelchocolat.com), other pairings could vary from red wine to cocoa gin, or even a herbal infusion with cocoa shells. School of Chocolate graduate and supervisor, Andrew Salter, has been delivering these Lock In events at Hotel Chocolat’s Southampton store for the best part of 2 years, says; “I personally really enjoy running these events, apart from giving me an excuse to go on and on about something that I love (chocolate), we often have really engaging Guests who listen attentively and ask all sorts of questions. I think the most rewarding part of the experience for both myself and the Guests is when they try something that they wouldn’t normally like and end up really liking it.” The angle of tutoring throughout these chocolate lock in events comes from allowing guests to learn something new and exist in a world of pure luxury, and that doesn’t have to be just for an hour, as towards the end of the evening guests are also given the chance to take part in some twilight shopping. With

a unique discount code especially for the lock in, your ticket price is reimbursed with your purchase. If that wasn’t enough, you are also given ‘Surprise and Delight’ vouchers for the next time you come shopping with Hotel Chocolat, a perfect opportunity to take a piece of heaven away with you. In terms of experiencing heaven on earth, Hotel Chocolat are not shy towards offering other exceptional chocolate focused experiences. 1,000 feet above the glittering Caribbean Sea, on the paradise island of Saint Lucia lies Hotel Chocolat’s cocoa plantation and boutique hideaway, where you’re able to participate in the creation of your own bars of chocolate completely from scratch. If you’re seeking seclusion, maybe a romantic getaway or a group trip; this could be an adventure very worth considering.

Waterstones in Westquay provides regular new book releases to satiate your bookloving needs. Whether you’re sunning it abroad, looking for a new read for your daily commute or just after a new book to stick your nose into at the weekend, we’ve accumulated a selection of novels for the spring/summer period.

THE LOST WORDS by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris (Hardback, £20.00) This collection of illustrated poems focuses on the ‘lost words’ that are being displaced and are vanishing from the lives and minds of children and adults alike. Capitalising on the imagination and wildness of play as a child, these works aim to celebrate the natural world and words like bramble which signify the wild environment. Magical and striking, the illustrations and words themselves are enthralling and the poems themselves conjure up notions of poignancy whilst being wholly enchanting and mesmerising.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME by André Aciman (Paperback, £8.99) This extra-ordinary novel turned motion picture, follows a coming-out and coming-of-age plotline and is set in Italy during the 1980s. The familiarity of first love is explored in a humane and poetic translation. Through the readers’ involvement with the characters of Elio and Oliver, this contemporary love story and all its emotions resonate beyond the confines of the pages.

WORDS BY KIRSTY PULLEN

In December 2016, Westquay opened up its highly anticipated, newest edition to the public: Westquay South. Known as one of the biggest restaurant and leisure complexes in the UK, it can be slightly overwhelming when it comes to finding the best places to fulfil your mid-week drinking needs (or any other day of the week for that matter). We have gathered a list of the best bars and restaurants for you and your friends to drink away your sorrows, but without breaking the bank - what could be better?

Image: @sighrebecca Drink: “Pina Colada”

Our first stop – Thaikhun. If you haven’t already been here, you really are in for a treat. It goes without saying that their food is delicious, but their cocktails really are a must see. Served in mini buckets, coconut shells, and even plastic bags – Thaikhun have added an extra sparkle to those standard after work drinks. Not only do they offer a happy hour from 12-6pm (who said lunchtime drinking wasn’t allowed?), but they also have a happy hour running from 9pm until close. Do I hear anyone’s new Friyay plans? All cocktails are £5 each, so why not!

All Bar One

All this talk of cocktails has got me excited for the weekend, but what if you’re not a cocktail person? We’ve got you covered. Casa Brasil offers a beer bucket offer, with 6 beers for just £20I’m no mathematician, but this sounds like a good deal to me. You can choose from a selection of several Brazilian beers, but if these aren’t for you, Corona’s are also included in the deal. With a fun and colourful atmosphere, this is a great place to come with work colleagues or friends.

Cabana

Now for something slightly less tropical, but still offering a range of delicious classics – All Bar One. I’m sure many of us are no stranger to All Bar One, but did you know that they have cocktails for just £4.95 each from 5pm every Sunday to Thursday? These include: Bellini’s, Cosmopolitans, Pink Grapefruit Collins, Aperol Spritz, Pomegranate Daiquiris and my personal favourite – Disaronno Sours. T
