JCI is an international platform for youth leadership. I believe that it could sharpen and enhanced my leadership skills during my 1 year to lead presidency. Besides, it is a great platform that I could learn together with my President-mates in 2021 as well. JCI empowers young people to create positive change and create quality Presidents. This really inspires me to take the challenge to become Local President in 2021.

The most challenge under the pandemic in 2021 is that the members & BOD bonding throughout the year. We had been limited to organize physical activities which may create stronger bonding. We had moved our activities virtually, but the impact for bonding still not ideal as comparing with physical. In order to solve this challenge, I did called my members and BOD frequently for ground work purpose so that President may easy to understand what members and BOD needs in JCI and find solutions to empower members to become OC and project committees.

How do you feel about becoming the president during the pandemic?
At first, I feel demotivated as President not able to do his duty for local, area and national level compare to those Past Presidents did before especially in physical events like Area Conventional, NATCON & ASPAC. However, during the 2021 JCIM ACS Virtual Academy, PNP Velvet Ooi did motivate me by her quote that “Your Best Year Yet” and “Expect the best and prepare to be surprised!” Now, I always remind myself that, leader should overcome all the difficulties and prepare to be surprised during the pandemic.

Of course is seeing my members. I really wish that to have more bonding with members during my presidency. Without members, who we are? In my LO, we love to have GMMs (General Members Meeting). As our culture, we gain most bonding during the GMMs like reunion dinner, sport activities and etc. In this year, we have few new members to join us, so, we wish to know our members more and together everyone rise in JCI and achieve more too.

As I joined JCI from year 2012 to present, I benefited from a lot of help, learning, growing, and becoming a better version of myself. I think it is time to contribute to JCI. Becoming the president is the same as doing business and career, and you must lead people with your heart. I want to bring a group of like-minded friends to serve the society.
I would like to thank my mentor JCI South Key Charter President Juana Tang & JCI South Key 2020 President Alicia Ng which is my IPP now. They always guide me and inspire me to breakthrough myself and shine in JCI. They make me want to be a person like them to inspire and do things I have never done before. So I take the challenge and be the president in 2021. And...... that is AWESOME to have JCI South Key president journey in 2021! Just like the president theme : Together We RISE! Ohana (means family) We’re not friends but family.
What would be the first thing you want to do when the pandemic ends?
The first thing that I want to do when the pandemic ends is to meet up our members, local presidents, area team and national team physically. To have a round trip and meet up one another and enjoy the local food in different state of Malaysia. To have the bonding time with those members and team and said: “Finally meet you in physically way!”
The second things that I want to do is meet up other NGOs and civil sectors in physically way and share the proposal of the event that we can get collaboration. To execute those event that can only able to held in physically. To treasure the time that we can do something that we want to do long time ago, such as CEO Wine Night and Last Straw Johor program.
The third things is to have a appreciation dinner with sponsors that support us all the time. To have the opportunity to present our achievements that had during the pandemic and what’s next step to move forward.
Name 1 or 2 good solutions you did or you will do in leading your organization in results to live up with the new norm.
The one of the solutions that I did in leading the chapter is to have different pillar group chat with Vice President, Commission Directors and members. To share the upcoming / planning project , and they can exchange information and volunteer to involve in the organizing chairperson position or committee team.
And also, this year is the third year of JCI South Key, our members is 50 and below. And there’s so many projects, so many of them willing to share their skill to help during committee team to make the event better, like our virtual IAB design is done by our designer members. We understand that JCI is the platform to discover their skills, and we believe the right person in right position is important too while unleashing the leadership skills.
This is how I lead my organization to be better and more impactful. I believe what I did is plant for future years of JCI South Key and I wish to see greater highlight of JCI South Key after. President - Voice - Out JCI South Key - Joeyee Lee

What are the challenges you had when leading the organization as president during the pandemic, and your solution?
I want to become president in 2021 is because JCI Century is a very new chapter and we have many of potential and active members so I hope that I can pass all my JCI knowledge to them and let them know what is JCI Value.
Besides, I also hope that JCI Century can create more active citizens and empower them to become leaders.
As I mentioned above JCI Century is still new, our members can’t attend JCI Events in physically last year and we hope to let them participate and get involve in JCI but we can’t make it this year. It will also affect on recruitment and retention members.
What can we do right now? Is bonding our members and plan more creative virtual events.

I’m always would like to learn how to be in a leadership role, and our Immediate Past President has encouraged me for Local President that serves our members & local community. With my 4 years membership journey with JCI Batu Pahat Entrepreneur, it is the best opportunity for me to contribute my experience and commitment to my chapter. Apart from that, I would like to take this challenge to improve my leadership & communication skills with a team of young committed members.
The biggest challenges during the pandemic are physical engagement with our members, which directly affect our membership recruitment & retention. However, we seized the opportunity to conduct more online courses to improve our JCI Knowledge, and virtual activities for interaction with our members via ZOOM. Apart from that, we also collaborate with other local NGO to help our local community and create impactful value to our members through projects.
It was never easy to become the president especially during this pandemic, but I’m very fortunate and enjoying my journey with the support from my LEAD team and members. Their passion and commitment has inspired me to keep moving forward and getting ready for next challenge.

The reason that I would like to become the president in 2021 can summary as “2G” gain & give. For the gain part, I believe that the LO president is the chapter’s leader so it is a great opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills. As we know, to be a president we need to give a lot of speeches and this helps me gain public speaking experience. As a president also can learn how to work and communicate with people who have different characteristics. I think to become a president is a great way to “give back” the organization that it gives me so much. I hope what I learn from this organization can inherit to my member, so we can develop more opportunities to create positive change. And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

One of the challenges that I face is our plan of action. We did our plan of action last year, and after the pandemic become serious, I gather my board of directors to review our plan of action to see which event can change to online and which event need to get postponed. For the postponed event, we find other events to replace it to make sure the pandemic won’t affect us too much. Another challenge that I face is the bonding of members. In the past, after the event meeting member can have a drink to do bonding, but when change to online meeting usually after the event meeting member will close the meeting. So, what we do is we hold the online gathering event with some games to encourage members to attend to sustain the relationship.
Share with us the reason you choose to serve as local president in 2021. I personally believe in fate and it is my fate to become the president for 2021 in order to improve myself into a better person. Previously as a member, or even as a committee, the matters we can see and learn in JCI is still minimal compare to becoming the president. I believe I can definitely rise to another level and learn to lead and manage a group of people after going through this president journey.

What are the challenges you had when leading the organization as president during the pandemic, and your solution? The biggest challenge during this pandemic is maintaining the relationship and bonding between the members. During this challenging time, we have to communicate and meet with each other through an icy-cold screen which affected our bonding. The impact of physical events is undeniably better. I find the game “Two Truth, One Lie” played during the Area Central South Academy an awesome game to improve the bonding during online activities and I had been planning to play this game during one of our General Members Meeting. As said by Roy Bennett, a Zimbabwean Politician, “Every challenge, every adversity, contains within it the seed of opportunity and growth”. I believe this challenge is an opportunity for all of us to learn something new and growth into a better person to create a better world.
