2024 was a milestone year for Leadership WA, marking two decades of growing leadership capability and capacity for Western Australia.
The Board acknowledges the exceptional results and impact delivered by the Leadership WA team in 2024, and the outstanding achievement of reaching two organisational milestones: 20 years of Leadership WA and 10 years of the LeadAbillity Course.
These two achievements make it a memorable year in the annals of Leadership WA. The celebrations underpinned by the continued outstanding delivery of our core Programs and Courses, the growth in Tailored Solutions business and the engaging calendar of Alumni events, all of which contributed to 2024 being an exceptional year for the Leadership WA community.
At the beginning of the year, we honoured Leadership WA’s 2023 Distinguished Fellow, Brodie McCulloch (Signature 2016) and Honorary Fellow, Mark Glasson, CEO of Anglicare WA at the 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner. It was a pleasure to recognise just how much these two deserving recipients dedicate to creating powerful change in and for Western Australia, and we thank and congratulate them.
I am also delighted to formally recognise and warmly congratulate Leadership WA CEO, Dominique Mecoy OAM, on her well-deserved recognition in the 2024 Australia Day Honours. Dominique was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM), for services to business and the community.
During the year, the Board reshaped and endorsed a new Strategic Plan for 2024-2029, with a refreshed focus on growing leadership; meaningful impact; enduring connections and sustainable practice. Alongside the new Strategic Plan, the Board’s guiding philosophy of sound planning, balanced with embracing new opportunities and preparing for challenges, will see Leadership WA continue to grow into the future.
On behalf of the Board, I express our gratitude to Leadership WA’s Partners, supporters and Donors who provide the crucial assistance needed to ensure we continue to deliver on our vision of courageous leadership shaping a better WA.
Thank you also to my fellow Board Directors and the Leadership WA team for their ongoing dedication to creating a positive impact across Western Australia.
Angie Paskevicius Chair Leadership WA Board
Our 20th Anniversary year was a wonderful opportunity to revisit the remarkable impact that Leadership WA has had on and for our State since 2004.
We also marked 10 years of LeadAbility, a Course which has seen over 310 graduates go from strength to strength, growing leadership capacity and advocacy for the disability sector.
In 2024, the Leadership WA Board worked collaboratively with the team, to reframe our Strategic Plan for 2024-2029. The result being a clear focus on the future, while remaining grounded in our values of connecting, empowering, being adaptable and being exceptional. For me, these ring true in every element of what we do, and why we do it.
They clearly resonate with many others too, as we had record numbers of applications for the Signature and Rising Leadership Programs. Our bespoke Tailored Solutions were also in demand, and 2024 saw us working closely with a variety of WA organisations to create and deliver customised leadership development for their teams.
As the year drew to a close, our Alumni grew to over 1300 leaders. Their continued support across everything we do, is unparalleled. I thank them for exemplifying our values and living our vision.
I also wish to acknowledge the Leadership WA team for their unrelenting commitment and dedication to our purpose and to each other. The team is small but mighty and collectively achieve so much.
To our incredible Leadership WA network of Partners, Alumni, Participants, supporters and advocates, we can only do what we do because of you. Thank you for joining us in delivering our vision, answering the call and being unwavering in your support.
Yes, it was quite a year! Sharing it with us and being part of our Leadership WA story has made it so memorable.
Now, we look to the future. Towards further growing leadership capability, and expanding connections and amplifing our collective impact. Towards our vision of courageous leadership shaping a better WA.
I look forward to sharing the journey with you. Here’s to the next 20 years!
Dominique Mecoy OAM Chief Executive Officer Leadership WA
20 years of courageous leadership shaping a better WA.
“We elevate people’s thinking about leadership. We bring together remarkable human beings. A lot of magic happens when you do that … empowering them to think about who they are as a leader, what their footprint is, what their leadership approach might be, and how they can contribute to community.”
Dominique Mecoy, CEO, Leadership WA

Reconnecting with Founding Partner, Rio Tinto
It was with great excitement that we announced the return of our original Founding Partner, Rio Tinto, as a Major Partner for the next 3 years. Rio Tinto’s generous support ensures the continuation of the Signature Leadership Program’s iconic annual Field Trip to the Pilbara, enabling us to continue taking 38 of the State’s most senior leaders to this powerhouse region.
We are grateful to Rio Tinto for their legacy of support for Western Australian leadership.

We look forward to all that we will achieve together in the years ahead.
In recognition of our 20-year milestone, over 260 members of our extensive leadership community came together to reminisce, reconnect and celebrate at the 20th Anniversary Gala Dinner.
We welcomed Alumni, LeadAbility Graduates, past and present Board Members, Partners, Donors, speakers, staff, coaches and so many of the supporters who have contributed so much to Leadership WA over the past two decades. His Excellency the Honourable Christopher Dawson AC APM, Governor of Western Australia and Mrs Darrilyn Dawson, Joint Patrons of Leadership WA, were our guests of honour.

Leadership WA Programs and Courses challenge, connect, inform and inspire. Our unique approach to curating cohorts brings together leaders with diversity of sector, experience and perspective, to broaden each individual’s understanding and capacity to serve Western Australian organisations and communities.
Highly regarded, Signature is aimed at high performing leaders looking to develop their own courageous, powerful and authentic leadership. For over two decades, it has served as the catalyst for senior leaders to take their leadership to new levels, with the impact frequently referred to as ‘life-changing’.
LeadAbility empowers those living with a disability, caring for someone with a disability or working within the sector, to grow their leadership skills. Supported by the Department of Communities, the Course is delivered in small cohorts with a focus on developing Participants’ communication and teamwork skills while growing their self-awareness and confidence.
Delivered as a four-day introduction to the fundamentals of being a leader, Aspiring is a gamified leadership development workshop for emerging and early career leaders, and those who are new to supervising teams. It is engaging and interactive and well suited to those who learn best by doing.
Harnessing the power of experiential and peer learning, Rising offers midcareer leaders the opportunity to elevate their leadership. Participants grow their foundation in leadership fundamentals, expand their thinking and hear from a range of insightful speakers, while creating enduring connections within their cohort.
Tailored Solutions are our bespoke leadership development Programs, crafted for an organisation’s unique requirements and designed to meet their vision, challenges, culture and values. From small group workshops to multisession, cross-team Programs, we work collaboratively with each organisation to tailor content to strengthen their leadership capability.
Our Scholarships extend the power of transformational leadership development to leaders who would otherwise be unable to participate in our Programs. Scholarships for Signature and Rising are available for leaders working in small businesses, small to medium not-forprofits and specific industries, along with those living in regional WA.
Signature takes senior leaders from the commercial, public and not-for profit sectors on a 10-month journey of self-awareness and self-mastery. The Participants undertake an in-depth exploration into the meaning of being a courageous leader, stretching far beyond management thinking and with a focus on broader societal issues.
Our 2024 cohort examined leadership through the lens of issues that are of critical importance to Western Australia, exploring themes central to the future of our State as part of the experiential Program. They visited locations of economic, cultural or social importance to Western Australia, including:
• Forrest Research Foundation, to explore research and innovation in and for WA.
• Hammond Park Secondary College, to
hear from students about their hopes and aspirations for leadership in WA.
• Rise, a not-for-profit providing support for the most vulnerable, to consider homelessness and the systemic challenges and opportunities for change.
• His Majesty’s Theatre, to immerse themselves in the value of culture and the arts and the importance of creativity in leadership.
Congratulations to our 2024 Valedictorian
Signature has transformed the way I lead my organisation and this has had ripple effects across the team, allowing others to step up.
The Program has given me peers across multiple industries and not only shown me the importance for our work, but also how critical the creative and cultural industries are to every industry. It has real relevance.
Julian
Canny (Signature 2024) Co-Founder, Euphorium
A highly anticipated element of the Program were the two Field Trips, where Participants headed north and south to gain insights into regional industries and communities. They spent time with First Nations people to learn the stories of the region and visited sites of cultural and historical significance.
In the North, with the support of Major Partner, Rio Tinto, they flew to the Pilbara.
Participants toured Rio Tinto Iron Ore, Roebourne Prison and St John Ambulance. They were given insider perspectives by the Pilbara Development Commission and the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on the economic opportunities of the region.
To the South, they visited the Katanning Sheep Saleyards, Narrogin Hospital and CBH Group’s Grain Centre. The cohort saw firsthand the impact of a community and government collaboration in Collie, to diversify the economy from coal-focussed to new industries.

The Rising Leadership Program offers those who are at the midpoint in their leadership journey, the opportunity to elevate themselves as leaders, grow their connections and amplify their impact as a leader.
In 2024, we welcomed 59 leaders representing a diversity of experience, sector, industry and perspective, into two Rising cohorts.
The Program, held at a range of real world locations across Perth, included experiences with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Construction Training Fund, ERGT, ARUP, Good Sammys and the WA Police Academy. Participants heard from the organisations’ leaders, and grew their knowledge by trying their hand at operations, from putting out fires to sorting donations.
The cornerstone of this 6-month Program is the opportunity for Participants to put their leadership learnings into action, by working collaboratively on Community Impact Projects.
Under the direction of Project Mentors, who generously donate their time, the groups aim to positively impact one of three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Zero Hunger, No Poverty and Reduced Inequalities, in a WA context.
A huge thanks to our 2024 Mentors:

True leadership begins with purpose, passion and connection. Connection to like-minded people, who want to have a positive impact in our world.
To my fellow cohort, it’s hard to believe that six months ago we were strangers. This journey has united us as a family of leaders. I am proud and grateful to be part of this group.

The Aspiring Leadership Course is a powerful introduction to leadership fundamentals, wrapped in the dynamic and engaging delivery of a game.
Created for emerging and early career leaders, Aspiring is a highly interactive experience set over four fast-moving days. Participants gain a practical toolbox of skills to lead more effectively and to contribute to high performing teams.
In 2024, we welcomed 45 aspiring leaders, across two cohorts. They used case studies, group discussions, challenges and selfreflection to explore how to be an effective leader. The DISC® personal assessment tool enabled them to better understand themselves and how they react in various situations.
Aspiring is also a popular Course with organisations looking to develop their own emerging leaders, or as an industry-specific opportunity to grow leadership capability within a sector and can be tailored by the Leadership team to suit.
I enjoyed the Course structure and delivery, which were very engaging. I valued the practical leadership tips provided, and facilitator Wendy Wilson was brilliant! The level of energy in the room was so positive.
The numerous outcomes have given me the motivation to keep working on my leadership skills.

Our industry is constantly changing and being equipped with the skills to lead myself and others in a purpose and values driven way, will help to build a better environment for all.

Leading Australian Resilient Communities (LARC) was part of an Australian Government $5 million national pilot initiative to support regional communities to grow local leadership, meet challenges and drive change. LARC was delivered by Leadership WA in the Goldfields-Esperance and Mid West Coastal regions in 2022-2023.
In 2024, we returned to Kalgoorlie, Esperance and Geraldton to reunite with our LARC Graduates and meet local and aspiring leaders, to deliver an afternoon of leadership learnings, personal development and networking.
We shared the impact of the Program, and our Graduates spoke to their LARC experiences and Community Initiative Projects, developed by each group to respond to an issue of local importance.
An interactive leadership development session was held to further strengthen individual leadership capacity, followed by networking and community focused conversations.
The LARC Graduates were inspirational in their commitment to leading and creating stronger, more resilient and connected regional communities.
LARC was delivered by Leadership WA in collaboration with Australian Rural Leadership Foundation and Regional Australia Institute and funded by the Australian Government.
LARC helped me better understand my own values and leadership style, which strengthened my capacity to work alongside those who see and engage with the world differently to me.

Each year, our Alumni and Participants generously provide their time, skills and leadership to assist WA’s not-for-profit organisations and our West Australian community.
In 2024, an estimated 4,000 hours of pro-bono professional support was provided by our engaged supporters through the Skillsbank Initiative, Rising Leadership Community Impact Projects and LeadAbility Community Projects. A commitment, which when calculated at the basic professional hourly rate of $300, equates to $1,170,000* invested into making a difference by these passionate leaders.
*based on known committed hours or assessment of typical commitment.
The Skillsbank Initiative brings Alumni and LeadAbility Graduates together with WA not-for-profits who are seeking support to advance their missions. This year, we proudly facilitated Alumni in assisting organisations including Girl Guides WA, Interchange WA, Wheatbelt and Beyond Youth Mentoring and Citizens Own Renewable Energy Network Australia in a variety of roles, in areas as diverse as cyber-security to clinical governance.
In 2024, our LeadAbility Community Projects developed the following innovative ideas to support those living with disability.

Yellow Car Park Bays Allocated parking bays for people with hidden disability to promote inclusivity.
Shift Plus Access An industry event to create awareness of the value of employing people with disability.

We are privileged to have some of the State’s top leaders speak at our Experience Days and events. In gratitude for their support, we were proud to make a donation on their behalf to two small WA not-for-profits: No Limits Perth and Feed the Little Children.
The Community Impact Projects form an integral part of the Rising Leadership Program. The Projects enable Participants to consolidate their leadership learnings through practical application to deliver a tangible outcome to one of three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG): Zero Hunger, No Poverty and Reduced Inequalities. Our 2024 cohorts created these impressive and inspiring initiatives:
Zero Hunger | Improved the hydration habits of school children in far north WA, by promoting water consumption over soft drinks. The introduction of refillable filtered water bottles and a rewards-based system effectively turned drinking water into a game.
No Poverty | Created a three-phase plan to improve the accessibility and awareness of WA Connect, an essential service for people in crisis. This included a website gap analysis, review and creation of new collateral and the use of fresh communication channels.
Reduced Inequalities | Established GenPals to promote social inclusion, reduce ageism and connect seniors to their community, by creating a space where the older generation can get together with young people to share stories, wisdom and laughter.
Zero Hunger | Partnered with a local community provider in the City of Mandurah to raise awareness of vital food support services and created a set of fact sheets for families for distribution in schools.
No Poverty | Developed a podcast, Voices of Resilience: Changing Faces of Poverty, to foster open, inclusive and engaging communication around poverty, breaking down the stigma and providing valuable resources.
Reduced Inequalities | Produced Seen and Heard: A Child Advocate’s Story, an emotive stop-motion film highlighting the critical role child advocates with lived experience play in supporting children who have experienced, or are experiencing, family domestic violence.
If you would like further information on any of the Projects, a copy of the Project Reports and recommendations or you see an opportunity for collaboration, please contact Leadership WA.

Alumni also volunteer their time to support WA not-for-profits though our unique Skillsbank Initiative. To all who answered the call in 2024 and continue to do so, thank you.

Navigating the rapidly developing field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was the topic of our April Alumni event with Dan Hookham, Founder of Component6, offering tools and strategies for embracing AI.
In July, Cate Rocchi (Signature 2017), Managing Director at Perth Media, and Tom Zaunmayr, Senior Journalist at Business News, delved into this significant topic for leaders.
Alumni enjoyed insights into the life of being a reporter, with Tom sharing his often exciting and challenging experiences, and had the opportunity to learn more about strategically managing media engagement, from media and PR expert Cate.
Small but Mighty: Exploring not-forprofit governance and leadership challenges
Exploring the role of Boards brought Alumni together in August.
Facilitated by Cheryl Chan, Founder and Director of Remotely Legal, the expert panel included Julie Harrison (Signature 2014), Managing Director Climate, Environment and Engagement at Aurecon, Gary McGrath (Signature 2011), General Manager WA, Commercial Banking at Commonwealth Bank, and David Morrison, CEO and Managing Director of NeonLogic Agency, shared the joys, challenges and opportunities for Boards of smaller not-for-profit organisations.
Mark Glasson, CEO Anglicare WA and Leadership WA 2023 Honorary Fellow, along with Shae Garwood (Signature 2024), General Manager, Advocacy and Strategy, Anglicare WA and the Anglicare team, brought the complexities of the homelessness issue to Alumni’s attention during this engaging presentation and workshop in September.
Taking Flight: The leading role of Perth Airport in WA’s future
The group explored the steps that they, as leaders in their organisations and communities, can take to address one of the most pressing social issues facing our WA community. The 2024 Alumni event program ended the year on a high at Perth Airport.
Jason Waters, CEO Perth Airport, enlightened the group on the vision for the new Airport Central precinct, terminal facilities and runway. Alumni also enjoyed a very special insight into airside operations, with a behind the scenes tour, including the rare opportunity to set foot on the runway.
Thank you to those Partners, Speakers, Alumni and supporters who made this unique calendar of engaging, educational and exciting events possible.
We are delighted to welcome 97 Western Australian leaders to our Leadership WA Alumni network. We celebrate the commitment of our Graduates, who have wholeheartedly invested in their leadership journeys for the benefit of themselves, their organisations and the WA community.
We are delighted to congratulate the 2024 Scholarship Recipients.
