OUR

WELCOME

Welcome to our newly renamed magazine TRACTION, bringing you the latest news, product innovations and special offers from the Rea Valley Tractors team.

Catchy weather has dominated the early part of harvest, and our teams are on hand to support you as you push your equipment to make the most of each weather window. The positivity with which the industry faces these challenges never ceases to amaze me. Thank you to all those involved.

It’s been a busy season here at RVT, with plenty of news from our seven depots and some exciting changes happening across our business. In July we announced that we had signed heads of terms to acquire our neighbouring New Holland and Kuhn dealer Teme Valley Tractors and we’re delighted to welcome them to the RVT family. Read more on pages 4-5.

We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from our customers and community in both our existing and extended territories. The response to the New Holland product range has been phenomenal in particular the CR Revelation harvest equipment, which was the biggest selling combine in Europe last year and also the T7 LWB PLM tractor range. Our demonstrators are working hard to fulfil demand and we would like to take this opportunity to thank you and reassure you that our team are here to support you in the seasons ahead.

And a huge thank you to everyone that attended our open days over the summer in Denbigh and Middlewich, we had over 800 visitors across both sites and our team enjoyed spending time with our customers giving them the grand tour! Look out for news of our Ormskirk open day date – it’s planned for the end of the year - but we’re open for business in the meantime. You can contact the team on 01695 213139

Best of luck to our customers with the remaining harvest and upcoming cultivations ahead of them.

Rea Valley Tractors reach agreement to acquire Teme Valley Tractors

Rea Valley Tractors made a number of exciting changes to the business in November last year including being appointed the New Holland Agriculture dealer over a larger trading area with three new branches, and the expansion of its JCB territory into Cheshire. The three new branches are located in Middlewich (Cheshire), Ormskirk (Lancashire) and Denbigh (North Wales).

Teme Valley Tractors (TVT) has a highly reputable and long-standing history supporting the New Holland and Kuhn ranges and this acquisition will combine a wealth of technical knowledge and understanding of the brands to help better serve the local agricultural community.

Customers will benefit from an enhanced offering in the region with more choice of New Holland and Kuhn equipment available within the larger group. There will also be an expanded product range from a single provider, offering additional brands such as JCB materials handling equipment, Bailey Trailers and domestic ground care products including Milwaukee, Stihl, Countax and Hayter that are all core franchises held by Rea Valley Tractors.

Both TVT Welshpool and Knighton branches will continue trading from the current locations, and TVT employees from both businesses will transfer to Rea Valley Tractors at the completion of the deal, targeted to be the end of September. We are delighted that this includes Graham Probert and Martyn Hall who will continue in key management roles within the business.

Simon Clarke, Chairman of Rea Valley Tractors said: “The agricultural machinery industry has been through a period of substantial change; RVT has been at the forefront of that. I am delighted to have reached an amicable agreement with Graham and Martyn to acquire TVT. This acquisition will benefit all our stakeholders: customers, staff and suppliers. I look forward to working with Graham, Martyn and the TVT teams over the coming years”.

With this acquisition, Rea Valley Tractors will operate from a total of nine locations, with each branch being a fully functional sales, service and parts operation that can independently serve each local area. When combined with Rea Valley Tractors group functions, such as field parts vans, in-house Kuhn, JCB and New Holland product specialists, alongside a five-person strong dedicated Precision Agriculture team, customers throughout the region will enjoy the highest standards of support available in the industry.

RVT and TVT will continue to work as usual, while making the necessary preparations for the future collaboration and integration.

Teme Valley Tractors began trading in May 1983 before expanding into Welshpool in 1993, with Martyn Hall and Graham Probert managing the Welshpool and Knighton businesses respectively.

Graham Probert, Managing Director at TVT Knighton comments on the acquisition: “We’re welcoming the agreement, as it brings clear opportunities and benefits for both our customers and our respective teams. Both companies have the same shared family values and dedication to understanding and focussing on the customers needs; each with a well-established and knowledgeable team, and we look forward to the next chapter with Rea Valley Tractors”.

Officially Open

Rea Valley Tractors officially opened two of its three new branches this summer - Denbigh in May and Middlewich in June and to celebrate the occasion we invited the local farming communities to join us for an open day.

Both open days were a huge success with the bright sunshine and summer temperatures attracting more than 800 visitors across the two sites. Our team were on hand to give customers old and new a tour of the custombuilt facilities and learn a little bit more about how they can help their business.

Here’s a quick introduction to the Denbigh team led by Matthew Szymanski, who has been instrumental in the set up and was promoted to Branch Manager. Matthew has worked for local agricultural machinery dealers - like most of the team in Denbigh - and brings a wealth of experience to the business.

Matthew is supported by two Sales Territory Managers - Dafydd Jones and Martin Fox - along with Service Team Leader Iolo Harper-Owen, a team of service technicians, and two dedicated parts specialists - Meira Adams and Rhys Williams.  With strong agricultural backgrounds, our service technicians - Dewi Hughes and Connor Zinis - are skilled in servicing and repairing new and used tractors and machinery.

Why the Kuhn FBP3135 combination baler is just what you need for the grass season.

Why the Kuhn FBP3135 combination baler is just what you need for the grass season.

10 03300 568800 MACHINERY | HAY AND FORAGE

Rea Valley Tractors have chosen the Kuhn FBP3135 combination baler to run as their demonstrator this year. There is an increasing focus on forage quality and the FBP3135 will not only help improve your production, but also save per bale with the Kuhn patented film binding.

Talking to Will Fowler our Kuhn Product Specialist, find out how you can get ahead on the grass season for next year or book a demonstration using the QR code below.

Reduce bale damage

The baler has INTELLIWRAP and a 3D wrapping system to gain further quality in the bale making process. The 3D wrapping system means the film roll holders are turned sideways, adding additional stretch around the outside of the bale. Plus, this system overlaps on the corner of the bales to add extra protection which reduces damage when handling and storing the bales. This baler also can apply both even and odd layers. This is unlike any other wrapping system on the market.

So, why film?

Film binding replaces the net traditionally used in the bale chamber to bind the bale. The reason for using film is to achieve a tighter bale which aids fermentation of the crop to produce a higher quality forage. Kuhns’ systems uses two 750mm rolls of film, the same used on a standard wrapper rather than competitor machines that rely on a full width film. One of the worst things about baling is changing the rolls, whatever system you may be using. The user friendly film rolls are limited to weighing no more than 27kg, as well as the film roll system having a low lifting height. It certainly makes this routine task much easier and quicker.

Further benefits of film include:

• UV protection

• Easier to open the bale

• Improves the stability of the bale

• Increases the lifespan of the bale

The baler has Kuhn’s revolutionary wrapping technique called INTELLIWRAP. This system allows for complete flexibility when it comes to the wrapping process. You can easily swap between the amount of film layers (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9...) you want based on preference.

Teaming INTELLIWRAP and film binding means you can gain up to a 5% saving compared to traditional net binding and up to a 17% saving compared to wide mantel film binding, all whilst producing a better bale.

If you are looking for a baler that will give you optimal crop pick up, great bale formation and a fully automatic deblock system, then this is the baler you need.

Boost your bottom line

The FBP3135’s proven design and unique options, mean this machine will boost your business’ profitability. It offers you high-quality bales at the lowest costs.

• Higher forward speeds - saving time

• Reduced crop damage - saving money

• Reduced crop wastage - saving money

• Longer wearing rotor tines - saving time and money

Will Fowler says, “once you’ve baled with the film binder, you are very unlikely to want to go back to any other kind of system! With the same material being used for binding and wrapping, the whole process is much easier, and it helps when it comes to recycling.”

Awardwinning Baler

The Kuhn film binding technology is industryrenowned and won an innovation award at LAMMA in 2019.

Our Kuhn specialist, Will Fowler explains, “You want consistency when it comes to baling and that refers to the size, shape, and fullness of the bale as well as the quality inside. The FBP3135 creates bales with less air in, resulting in highquality feed. You also want to work efficiently and be as productive as possible when there is a lot of crops to do. The FBP3135 tailgate opens and closes in ≥ 4.5 seconds and the ‘twin loading fork’ system offers a faster bale transfer of up to 30%. This means you significantly reduce idle time.”

A great

for our contracting business

Earlier this month we caught up with Malcolm Holland and Jack Talbot of Grange Bank Farm Agricultural and Equine Contracting, based between Newport and Shrewsbury. They recently purchased a New Holland T6.180 Dynamic Command tractor with MX Loader and a Kuhn 16.14 Bale wrapper from Rea Valley Tractors, and are just waiting on delivery of a New Holland Boomer 50 Compact Tractor with MX Loader.

We spoke to them both about their plans for the tractors and machinery, and why they chose to buy from Rea Valley Tractors.

When Malcolm and Jack first visited our Shrewsbury depot, they had a good idea of what they wanted. They knew they wanted to buy new, and that it needed enough horsepower for the range of services they offer, but without being too big that it wouldn’t suit some of their equestrian contracting requirements. Our Territory Sales Manager Tom Morgan was on hand to assist, and it is Tom they have dealt with since.

Here’s what they had to say.

About Grange Bank Farm

“We have 10 horses here currently and we breed Welsh ponies and Irish Sports Horses. We also have pedigree sheep including some Zwartbles, Ryelands and some Black Nose Valais. We are looking to double the pedigree Zwartbles herd over the next few months. We make our own hay each year and have enough to sell before the winter too. Our main business though is contracting. We are relatively small as contractors come, but we pride ourselves on the professional service we deliver, which can be anything from paddock sweeping, to flailing, to paddock seeding, baling round and square bales and wrapping. We also supply stables and shelters, as well as erect and install them.

What made New Holland stand out for you?

“After spending some time researching, we had a fair idea of the size and spec we were looking for. We needed something that would be versatile for both the agricultural work and the equine work, but also be comfortable for working all day long in. Our next tractor needed manoeuvrability and to be suitable for narrow roads. We were looking for a transmission system that works for the topping, mowing and baling work too. These aspects were important to ensure we are being productive and efficient.

We previously had a John Deere and wanted to replace it with a comparable tractor. New Holland have a reputation for reliability and get high marks on the comfort level of their tractors, which is always a hit when you are contracting. The cost of ownership was kept to a minimum with a great warranty, along with RVT’s personalised maintenance package.”

Why choose Rea Valley Tractors?

“With the Shrewsbury branch on our doorstep, and after deciding that New Holland ticked all our boxes, we headed over to Rea Valley Tractors to see what was in stock and the options available. Tom and the team were very helpful and gave us an in-depth run-through of the range - he understood straight away what we were going to need. We arranged a demo of the wrapper, and when it arrived, Tom stayed with us until midnight that night to ensure a smooth handover. Nothing was too much trouble. That’s the type of customer service you want. It was also a bonus that the T6.180 was in stock and reassuring that the prior delivery inspection meant that it was good to go as soon as it arrived with us.”

12 03300 568800
And, my surname is Holland, so it only felt right I had a tractor to match.
” MACHINERY | CUSTOMER FOCUS
all-round tractor

How does the New Holland T6.180 perform?

It’s a great tractor. It’s handy for all our farm work but also for the contracting business allowing us to undertake the varied work called for on a day-to-day basis on the farm such as mowing, raking, tedding, round and square baling, bale wrapping, silage work etc. The T6.180 is one of the most versatile tractors out there. It’s been designed by New Holland for the flexible farmer and that’s exactly what it does. It also has great visibility, which of course improves the safety of what we do.

For the Equine Contracting we felt we needed something a little smaller which suited the smaller equestrian paddocks and that we can put the high-performance paddock flail mower/scarifier collector where access can sometimes be tricky, particularly if the paddocks are all divided up into segments. We therefore purchased the New Holland Boomer 50 Compact Tractor with MX Loader which is going to be another useful tractor for us. By having a second loader tractor it is ideal for bale work for our own horses and sheep whilst the T6.180 is out contracting. The Boomer 50 has 1250kg rear lifting capacity, which is ideal for pulling a tip trailer. A great small tractor for all our own and contracting equestrian work whilst at the same time big enough for our grass equipment plus the round and square bale wrapper.

What are you plans for your business going forward?

We are currently growing the contracting side of our business and we will soon have our ISO certification. We want to become the ‘go to’ contractors for equestrians in the area, helping with paddock maintenance, post and rail fencing, general upkeep and repairs, and autumn clean-up of leaves, acorns and sycamore seeds which are poisonous for horses. We also supply and install a range of shelters and stables. We are horse people, so we fully understand the needs of equestrians and are committed to building relationships with livery yards, race yards and local studs. We are focused on fulfilling our customers’ needs to the best of our ability and continually invest in our business with this at the forefront of our minds.

Preserve the feed value of your forage

As we know, the great British weather is unpredictable so getting your forage cut and quickly harvested is high priority. Kuhn have a range of tedders and rakes to speed dry down time and improve forage quality. Take a look at our current stock items, available for immediate delivery.

Available in four working widths 4.22 - 6.40m and 4 - 6 rotors, the Kuhn GF 102 tedders are a costeffective solution for small scale operations.

With 4-8 rotors and working widths from 5.207.80 m, the GF 1002 tedders are designed to be compact for optimum safety on the road. Ideal for medium scale operations, the small rotors are great for short forage with optimum crop movement and 33% shorter drying time.

Trailed mounted tedders designed for medium to large sized operations with up to 16 rotors for high work output. Equipped with Headland Lift Control (HLC) rotor lift system for fast and effective manoeuvres when working in narrow or restricted areas, and Ground Save Control (GSC) that reduces ground scraping by 50%.

With 8 rotors, a working width of 8.70m and its advanced centre of gravity, the GF 8700 & 8703 offer an excellent ratio between mounted machine compactness and significant working width whilst remaining adapted to small-sized tractors.

Designed for small-sized tractors working in hilly terrain, the lightweight single rotor rake offers a working width up to 4.65m and great manoeuvrability on narrow plots or bends. For extra user comfort, the drive design ensures windrow delivery to the right and it offers excellent recentering when raising the machine on headlands.

Highly manoeuvrable, the GA 6501P mounted twin rotor rake offers a large working width of a twin rotor rake with a narrower transporting width – perfect for moving from site to site. Offering high output, this professional grade rake is great value for money with no compromise on manageability.

With working widths of up to 8.6m, the twin rotor rakes deliver central windrows and impressive rake quality for high output operations. Great for fast forage drying, they are robust and reliable with great ground following capacity.

Long-serving employees are the backbone of our business

“I then went to work for The Tuckwell Group, who are a John Deere dealer in East Anglia. This was the start of my John Deere journey. We moved there for four years before moving back to Lichfield to work for Auto Farm Tractors in Derby. Again, John Deere dealers who evolved into Netherseal Tractors. In that time I went from being a technician to a service manager and then a salesman.

Within every organisation, there are individuals who stand the test of time, becoming pillars of stability and beacons of inspiration. These remarkable individuals not only demonstrate unwavering commitment to their work, but also embody the values and spirit of the organisation itself.

We recently took a deep dive into the impressive career of Nigel Summerfield, our Group Customer Support Manager. Nigel told us all about his 50 year career in agriculture, what inspires him and how important it is to encourage young people to pursue their own careers in the industry.

How did you get into agriculture and when did you start at Rea Valley Tractors?

“I started as an apprentice at the age of 16 in 1972 for The Burgess Group, Lichfield. At that time, they were the largest agricultural dealers in Europe with 100 or so depots. It was a great place to get started at and stood me in good stead for my years to come. From there, I then completed a City and Guilds 030 qualification at Rycotewood College, Oxfordshire before returning to The Burgess Group in 1978.”

Nigel goes on to tell us about setting up his own business as a John Deere Service Technician for 10 years. During this time he employed people himself and saw things from a different point of view. “When you run your own business, you get to experience the many hats that you have to wear in order to make it work, and from doing this I think it has allowed me to relate to our customers here at RVT better.”

Nigel’s own business had to close when arthritis took hold in his hips and it was at this point, he was advised he needed a less physical job.

“After several pub meals and a few pints with the then AIS owner Mike Leadbetter, convinced me to take the job as Service Manager at Sudbury. Mike had been on to me for a few years, but before the arthritis kicked in, my aim was to grow my own business. It’s funny how things work themselves out, because I can’t imagine not having taken that role now.”

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

“It’s hard to pick just one! Following my success in promoting extended warranties and maintenance plans, JCB recognised my achievement, and I received an After Sales Award from JCB. That was really rewarding to be recognised for it.

Last year, I was also honoured to be awarded a beautiful rose bowl from the Staffordshire Agricultural Society recognising my 50 years of service to agriculture. That was such a special moment for me.”

Nigel worked for AIS from 2002 - 2012, before AIS bought Rea Valley Tractors and rebranded. This is really when the role Nigel is in now was formed. The then Managing Director Steve Potter spoke about creating a customer support role, and he wanted Nigel to fill it. RVT were one of the first dealers to see the importance of this type of role and Nigel was given free rein to make it his own. In 2018, he turned over £1,000,000 in extended warranty and maintenance packages.

OUR TEAM | EMPLOYEE FOCUS
“The business is innovative, not scared to invest and I am sure there are more exciting times ahead.”

What is your current role at RVT?

“I am Group Customer Support Manager, and I will let you in to a little secret, I am due to retire, but I’m not quite ready yet! I head up the RVT Shield side of the business, supported of course by the service team. My role is mainly out on the road, visiting farmers and customers to talk to them about our extended warranty and maintenance packages. These packages give you the peace of mind to keep your machines on the road, with genuine parts and regular servicing. They offer a cash-flow friendly solution to fixing your repairs and service pricing, especially with the fluctuating costs at the minute”

and the Directors know their direction of travel and where they want to take the business. It’s the right direction, and even just last month, we’ve announced the acquisition of another NH dealer, Teme Valley Tractors, a very successful dealership that has a great reputation. From feedback I have received over the last few months, it doesn’t matter the colour of the tractor, it’s the RVT people that matter.”

Nigel tells us how his job is so varied which keeps him motivated and loving the role he’s in. Each day he is meeting new farmers, and on a different farm. Hearing the opinions and experiences of these farmers and how they run their businesses is refreshing and helps him keep an ear to the ground. This then benefits RVT’s customers, as we become ‘friend in the know’ and much more relatable.

What is RVT like as an employer?

“Well, I’ve never worked in a company like RVT. They are very employee oriented, always extremely fair and without a doubt, they care about the wellbeing of their staff. Throughout Covid, they really went the extra mile to create a safe working space for us all. We have a dedicated HR department which gives us peace of mind that there is a go to person, should you need one. We get a whole package of benefits, access to healthcare and a benefits scheme for high street shops. Oh, and there aren’t many companies where you would have the Chairman’s mobile number to go to him direct. Simon is always so approachable, so visible and he’s on the ground, listening, asking questions, and caring about his team.”

Nigel tells us that he has been trusted to manage his role independently. He’s been granted ownership of what he does, whilst of course having the overall ambitions and goals of RVT at the forefront. This has allowed him to demonstrate his expertise, his own approach and get the results he has to date.

You had quite a career. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

“The change from John Deere to New Holland has definitely been the biggest challenge since I started, but such an exciting one. There has always been a vibrancy internally knowing how ambitious Simon Clarke, the group Chairman is, and that vibrancy is infectious. Simon

Extended Warranties Explained

With the rising costs of equipment and inflation still high, farmers and contractors now, more than ever are looking at the total cost of ownership when purchasing new equipment. Considering the costs for servicing, repairs and breakdown callouts upfront is extremely helpful for budgeting, giving you full transparency of the operating costs and predictable maintenance schedules.

Service plans and extended warranties are widely available - both from the manufacturer and third-party insurers - but can often be complex and a minefield to fully understand. Nigel Summerfield, Rea Valley Tractors Customer Support Manager talks us through the basics.

What’s included in a standard manufacturer’s warranty?

12 months’ is normally a base standard for manufacturers warranty, and that includes cover against manufacturing defects or assembly faults.

New Holland tractors come with a three-year / 3000 hours warranty*

How do extended warranties work?

Extended warranties provide longer protection for equipment over and above the standard manufacturers guarantee, normally covering mechanical and electrical breakdown and the repair or replacement of components if they fail. However wearing parts such as tyres and brakes are often excluded.

Under its RVT Shield brand, Rea Valley Tractors offer a range of extended warranties and maintenance plans designed to give you peace of mind and protect you against unforeseen expenses.

Why would I need a maintenance plan, over one-off servicing?

To help spread the cost. A routine maintenance plan allows you to fix your service costs for the duration of your plan, giving you the ability to pay for your servicing monthly, quarterly or at an interval to suit your cashflow.

With parts and oil prices fluctuating, we are seeing a demand for planned preventive maintenance with customers looking to fix their

operational costs. It can help alert you to an early warning of any potential problems that could result in costly repairs and unnecessary downtime. Having a maintenance agreement in place also helps preserve resale value, as its reassuring to know the equipment has a full-service history maintained by dealer-trained skilled technicians using genuine OEM parts. Failure to maintain your equipment under manufacturers guidelines can invalidate your warranty, so investing in a regular maintenance plan will keep you compliant.

Can I extend my 12 months manufacturer’s warranty? And is there a time limit on this?

You can purchase a manufacturer extended warranty at the point of sale, with the added benefit of including the cost in your finance package.

Alternatively, you can take out an extended warranty at any time in the first 12 months of ownership, with both JCB and New Holland equipment.

What options do I have when my extended warranty finishes?

You can purchase an RVT Shield warranty up to a further two years or 2000 hours, providing the equipment has done less than 5000 hours, and is less than five years old. Alternatively with JCB Machine Care, you can extend your warranty up to five years or 10,000 hours**. Or you can run your equipment without a warranty

Can I only take out a maintenance plan when I buy new?

No, a maintenance plan can be purchased at any time. Our team can help you establish a planned maintenance programme to suit your usage and manufacturers recommendations.

If you would like to discuss warranties or maintenance plans, or if you have any questions we haven’t covered above, please contact Nigel Summerfield on 07850 602735 or email nigelsummerfield@ reavalleytractors.com

Take Five to Stay Alive

NFU launched its ‘Take 5 to Stay Alive’ campaign last month, and David Brookes from Lower Loxley Farm - and NFU West Midlands regional board chairman - reminds us of the importance of staying safe and well when farming.

With harvest well under way, the NFU is reinforcing its latest health and safety campaign message to help protect farmers, their families and staff during what is a busy, but vital, time in the farming calendar. The NFU launched it’s ‘Take 5 to Stay Alive’ campaign, working with the agriculture industry to change attitudes towards farm safety and prevent life-changing and fatal accidents.

The campaign, which supported Yellow Wellies’ eleventh Farm Safety Week back in July, encourages everyone working on a farm or in an agricultural setting to take a fiveminute pause and think about the task in front of them, and the safety precautions they could take before starting it. Actions include everything from remembering to put on your seatbelt and engaging the Safe Stop principle when using a vehicle, to wearing a helmet when riding an ATV or staying vigilant when working at height or with livestock.

People are our most valuable assets, and we should all be thinking about our safety on farm 365 days a year. Yellow Wellies’ Farm Safety Week was an excellent way for us to come together, raise awareness and share practical advice about how to look after ourselves and

each other out in the field. We all have to talk more about safety.

The new campaign, ‘Take 5 to Stay Alive’, gets to the core of this year’s theme of ‘Farm Safety Starts with Me’. We all know the main causes of on-farm accidents but by taking a few seconds to think before we start a job, it gives us a chance to put in place those small, cost effective, life-saving actions which can stop tragic incidents from happening.

Five minutes or even five seconds could save a life or stop a life-changing accident. By making this small behavioural change, we are protecting the most important part of our businesses - ourselves. I hope you all have a safe, productive and successful Harvest 2023.
