By Terry Shropshire The women of “Married to Medicine” all look like they just stepped out of a photo shoot for a glamour magazine. Picturesque and photogenic, all are easy on the eyes and embody a level of sophistication and class that is so glaringly absent on other shows in the television genre. They are also successful and as intriguing as they are educated. All of which makes for an intoxicating and delicious social cocktail that will get you stirred up – and turned up – on the hit Bravo TV reality show that kicks off Season 3 on Sunday, June 6 at 9 p.m. One thing that is conspicuously clear about the cast of “Married to Medicine.” These women don’t just pontificate on success, or perpetrate wealth for the cameras; they are the quintessential embodiment of affluence. Their educational and professional resumes are as thick as a John Grisham novel. They are entrepreneurs and innovators, trailblazers and job-creators, inspirational speakers and barrier-busters. One cast member is planning a major medical mission with a team of doctors and technical equipment to earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Another is a dentist who doubles as a relationship expert and created a unique dating app that is like no other. A third has just written a children’s book and partners with her husband on their medical concierge business. And yet another runs her own OB-GYN clinic, while her close friend is the doctor to some of the biggest entertainers in America. And finally, another is the wife of a physician who came up with the “Married to Medicine” concept in the first place. Together, they are changing the face of urban reality TV … or reality, period. “There are a lot of reality shows out there. I think the difference is that you have the educated sistas on this one that know business. And I think that we can do some powerful things with our platform,” said Dr. Heavenly Kimes, an M2M cast member. “For me, I wanted to change the landscape of reality TV,” added Lisa Nicole-Cloud, a business mogul who also happens to be married to a doctor. “I didn’t want it to be just about the drama. We are professional women, we are married women. We are mothers who do things in the community. And we wanted to show some of that.” Toya Bush Harris, another beauty appearing on the show is in fact a former beauty queen with eyes

the color of the sunset. She will let you know up front and without shame or hesitation: “I am the bomb wife.” The problem is that most people stop there. They believe that she is the typical gorgeous groupie or fame flunky who staked out sports arenas looking to hitch her wagon to a walking bank vault called an athlete or professional doctor. Nothing could be further from the truth. Harris earned college degrees in business management and education, and worked for Fortune 500 companies before she even met her husband, a physician. She is also an author and a partner with her husband in their medical concierge business that brings medical assistance to the patient’s doorstep. But don’t get it twisted; Harris knows she’s all that. “I am fine. I’m highly blessed. And I work hard to maintain this. And I’m not trying to even be cocky. So many people on this show work hard and look hard. I don’t believe in that. I believe in working hard, but not to the point where you out here looking 20 years older than what you are. Get in the gym, put on a mask, get a facial, do what you got to do.” And as for Dr. Heavenly Kimes, reading her resume is exhausting: She is a dentist who graduated at the top of her class with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Meharry Medical College. She holds a real estate license, an insurance license, a Series 65 certification, and is a certified relationship coach. “Of course [viewers] will see me as a dentist and as a relationship expert with a radio show,” says Kimes. “I wanted to talk about business with my radio show and tell people about the mistakes I made in order to help people become successful. But when they called in, they didn’t want to talk about business. They would always ask, ‘well, Heavenly, how can you have three kids and a husband and keep your man happy?’ she explains. “It’s all about balance. So I started talking about relationships on the show. And it turned into a relationship show. Then I went and took it further and got certified as a relationship coach to tell the ladies what is wrong with their marriages,” she adds with a wink. Speaking to the multifaceted businesswoman, Lisa Nicole Cloud, just coming off the New York City leg of her national Women Empowerment Network seminar she discussed her personal and business growth — including Lisa Nicole Collections, which will be illuminated on “Married to

Medicine.” “You see the growth from opening a store to getting a brand ambassador, to launching our line for men. I think it’s important to show the entrepreneurial spirit that is a part of this cast, explains Cloud. “My husband and I are doing a medical mission to Haiti and we are doing a team of 15 physicians to Haiti in November of this year. We are taking over $200,000 in medical supplies and we’ve been reaching out to hospitals across the country to donate equipment so that the hospitals [in Haiti] have better technology to enable them to treat their patients. I am leveraging the platform to help people become part of the movement,” she says, adding, “To much is given, much is required. I do believe it’s important for us to bless other people.” Cloud, who was more laid back in Season 2, promises that she will crank up the noise and those who nip at her heels. “I’m not a drama queen. I try to be a positive influence. I try to help out wherever I can. There is one character, or cast mate, who likes to build her storyline on drama, who came for me and made me a target. And she tried not only to attack me, but she tried to attack my family and that’s just a no-fly zone for me. They didn’t ask to be on reality TV. Don’t bring them into the mix,” Cloud declared with an air of defiance and resolution. And then there’s Dr. Jacqueline Walters who is an inspiration in more ways than one. Not only does she have her own medical practice, and is the doctor to the stars such as Usher, Toni Braxton and T.I., but she is a two-time breast cancer survivor who is a speaker and advocate for healthy eating and living, as well as a proponent for advance breast cancer screening. But not to be outdone by any means Dr. Simone Whitmore is as beautiful as a bed of roses but, when she is crossed, her words can pierce like a rattlesnake’s bite. The owner of her own OB-GYN medical practice in suburban Atlanta, Dr. Whitmore is a successful speaker on women’s health and leadership. The mother of two teenagers and wife to her husband of 19 years, Whitmore lives life to the fullest, both at work and at play. Tune into Bravo TV on Sunday, June 6 at 9 p.m. to see Season 3 of the hit reality show “Married to Medicine.”

Suspended DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis faces fewer charges at retrial

Atlanta Parks and Recreation’s Play Mobile returns The Department of Parks and Recreation announced today that the “Play Mobile,” also known as the city’s recreation center on wheels, will return to city parks this summer. The Play Mobile will travel throughout the city on weekends from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., visiting neighborhoods that do not have static recreation centers and giving all Atlanta youth access to free recreational activities. “Since partnering with Coca-Cola last year to launch this innovative recreation center on wheels, the Office of Recreation has reinforced physical activity outside for youth of all ages,” said Amy Phuong, Commissioner of the Department of Parks and Recreation. “We’re combating health issues, in addition to providing safe environments for youth to play in their own neighborhoods.” The Play Mobile creates a safe, interactive and fresh air atmosphere that encourages children to go outside and play. Rain or shine, for three hours, Parks and Recreation leaders will guide free activities and games for youth. Youth will enjoy non-traditional sports, games, fitness demos, arts & crafts, as well as over-sized board games. “The Play Mobile positions the department to further realize Mayor Kasim Reed’s commitment to Atlanta’s youth by

bringing structured programming to neighborhood parks throughout the city,” said Annika Holder, Executive Director of the Office of Recreation. “The Play Mobile is equipped with scooters, hula-hoops, arts & crafts, ring toss and much more.” The Play Mobile weekend tour schedule begins Saturday, May 30, 2015, and will continue until the end of November. As suspended DeKalb County, Ga., CEO Burrell Ellis begins his retrial on corruption charges morning, he will surprisingly face four fewer charges than in the original indictment. Prosecutors have not provided an explanation for the reduced charges. There are still nine charges against Ellis, compared to the 13 in the first trial that lasted nearly two months. District Attorney Robert James decided not to move forward with two theft counts and two coercion counts, according to an order signed by Superior Court Judge Courtney Johnson. Nevertheless, Ellis still faces felony charges that could send him to prison for many years, including extortion, bribery and perjury charges. He is being accused of shaking down county contractors who wanted to do business with the county into giving him sizable campaign contributions. Ellis has maintained his innocence from the beginning and the first trial ended in a hung jury because the jurors were unable to come to a consensus on any of the counts against him. Prosecutors did not divulge why they dropped four counts against Ellis. Moreover, the defense is prevented from speaking on the matter due to a gag order issued by the judge in the case. The dismissed charges alleged that Ellis ordered county employees during work hours to create lists of vendors that he could then use to solicit campaign contributions, according to the indictment in the case.

Google announces $300M data center expansion in Georgia

Google executives announced on Tuesday, June 2 plans to expand the data center in Douglas County, Georgia. “Data centers are the engines of the Internet, and as the Internet grows, our data centers are growing too. Douglas County and the state of Georgia have been excellent partners, enabling us to grow our presence in the state. This expansion will allow us to continue to provide fast and reliable service to millions of people around the clock,” said Jason Wellman, Google’s data center operations manager There are more than 100 billion Google searches every month. In 2008, there were one trillion web addresses. Now, there are 60 trillion, and 300 billion hours of video are uploaded to YouTube each minute. Every time a user sends an email or searches for a nearby restaurant, the Internet grows – and Google data centers grow accordingly. “Much like Google, Douglas County continues to rapidly grow — evolving from a rural area to the economic hub of west Georgia. The expansion of Google’s data center demonstrates our commitment to growth and innovation. We are excited that the Google team has chosen to continue to invest in our community by expanding its home here with us,” said Tom Worthan, chairman, Douglas County Board of Commissioners The new facility will be located adjacent to the existing data center on Riverside Parkway — one of only 13 Google data centers in the

ADW | 4

world. We’re investing more than $300 million in the project, and once complete, the new data center will create at least 25 new full-time jobs in addition to the more than 350 employees who already work at the existing Douglas County facility. The new data center will help meet growing demand for Google’s services, including Search, Google+, Gmail, Maps, YouTube and other applications. Our commitment to Georgia goes far beyond the expansion of our data center facility. We also have an office located in Midtown Atlanta and recently announced plans to bring Google Fiber — our gigabit Internet and TV service — to nine cities in metro Atlanta. “Google continues to play a significant role in making Georgia the No. 1 place in the nation in which to do business. We are pleased that one of the world’s premier technology companies continues to make strategic investments in our state, whether it is this data center expansion, providing jobs, enhancing our technology infrastructure with Google Fiber, or by providing educational programs and technology resources for nonprofits. We are proud that Google is growing in Georgia.” — attributable to Nathan Deal, Governor of Georgia Construction for the new data center is scheduled to begin later this summer and is expected to be operational by the end of 2016.

Planned Parenthood Southeast joined a coalition of Atlanta-based reproductive justice and reproductive health organizations — organized by SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective & Trust Black Women — to defeat Pro-Life Across America ‘s anti-choice billboard campaign targeting Black women and Black communities in Atlanta. Nikema Williams, vice president of Planned Parenthood Nikema Williams Southeast, says, “Black women deserve to go about our business without seeing these billboards taking aim at our autonomy and spreading misinformation. We’re going to make the decision that’s best for us and no billboard is going to stand in our way.” The group and supporters convened a community town hall on Thursday, June 4 to raise awareness of the negative billboard advertisement and document the concerns of Black women in the community impacted by the billboard. SisterSong and Trust Black Women also worked with supporters and participants to develop strategies and grassroots solutions to prevent future visual media attacks on reproductive self-determination in Atlanta and throughout the state of Georgia.

Celebrities support Bruce Jenner’s transition to ‘Caitllyn’

Summer Movie Preview: Ultimate guide to can’t-miss flicks

Summer’s here and that means lots and lots of big budget blockbusters and sexy stars lighting up the big screen. Figuring how to spend your weekend matinee can be overwhelming, but have no fear; we’ve cherry-picked the best, so you don’t have to. San Andreas Opened: May 29 Starring: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Colton Haynes Check this one out this weekend for sure. It’s already set to debut at number one, so get your tickets now before heading out tonight. The Rock puts his star power (and that glorious body) to work in this latest disaster action adventure. The Rock plays a rescue helicopter pilot determined to rescue his ex-wife (Gugino) and their daughter (Daddario) after a devastating earthquake tears California apart. Entourage Opened: June 3 Starring: Jeremy Piven, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara After a successful eight-season run on HBO, the Chase Brothers and crew make their big screen debut. Ari, whose gone from cut-throat talent agent, to newly-minted studio head, decides to bankroll Vinny’s directorial debut, but their professional and personal relationships could go up in flames when the movie goes over budget.

Kim Kardashian tried to break the internet. But it was her stepfather, the former Bruce Jenner, who actually did it. Vanity Fair released its July cover and introduced Caitlyn Jenner to the world. Almost immediately, #CallMeCaitlyn started to trend. The former Olympic athlete came out as transgender in April of this year during an interview with Diane Sawyer, but the Vanity Fair cover marks the first time she has spoken publicly since completing gender transition. In the article, Jenner discusses her transition indepth, talking about accidentally using the name “Bruce” out of habit and her doubts over facial feminization surgery. “I’m not doing this to be interesting. I’m doing this to live,” Jenner tells interviewer Buzz Bissinger. Jenner herself joined social media on Monday, June 1 when the cover hit newsstands, and she racked up hundreds of thousands of followers in the first few hours of being on Twitter. Caitlyn Jenner has received a legion of support on social media, beginning with her daughter: Other celebrities, publicly voicing support for Jenner include Kerry Washington, Ellen DeGeneres, Jussie Smollett, Lance Gross and Rosie O’Donnell and even president Obama.

Reflections

By Steve Holsey

Upon learning that Chris Brown and his estranged girlfriend Nia Guzman — they are locked in a nasty legal battle over child support — have a daughter named “Royalty,” it seemed like a good time to reprise the strange names some celebrities give their children. A few more “regal” names: “Reign Beau” is the name of Ving Rhames’ child, Lil’ Kim picked “Royal Reign” for her daughter, and no one could ever forget Jermaine Jackson naming his son “Jermajesty.” Erykah Badu’s kids are “Seven Sirius” and “Puma.” Forest Whitaker named his child “Ocean.” Alicia Keys chose “Egypt Daoud.” Kelly Rowland has a son named “Titan Jewell.” The whole world knows about “Blue Ivy,” Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter, and then there’s Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s daughter “North,” making her “North West.” Meanwhile, Kelly Clarkson named her daughter “River Rose.” But the one I find most amusing is George Foreman naming all five of his sons “George.” Fortunately, the last four have nicknames so as to avoid confusion. MELBA MOORE won praise for her return to the stage in New York. She did two days at a popular Manhattan nightspot called 54. It was in that city, on Broadway, that Moore triumphed in “Purlie,” winning a Tony Award and belting out the showstopper “I Got Love.” A lot of people forget that at one time Melba Moore and Clifton Davis were a couple and also had their own summer replacement TV show. And you probably didn’t know that Moore’s birth name is Beatrice Melba Hill. BYRON ALLEN is someone I always liked, but that “like” turned to something else when he made those mean-spirited remarks about President Barack Obama, labeling him “a White president in blackface.” I beg to differ. Obama has been a very good and effective president and, furthermore, he is president of the United States, not president of Black America. PEOPLE have been talking about the biopic on the legendary Nina Simone that was completed in 2013, but no release date was given. Well, now word is out that it might be in theaters before year’s end. Trouble is, a lot of people, this writer included, are highly skeptical about Zoe Saldana, wearing dark makeup, in the lead role. No resemblance whatsoever. A better choice would have been Erykah Badu or, better yet, Nina Simone’s daughter, Simone, who is also a singer. But Saldana said, “It did sting that a community that you feel most identified with would give such a backlash, but at the same time it’s understandable.”

One of my three favorite music acts is the group the Manhattan Transfer. Sadly, founding member Tim Hauser passed away last year

and the remaining members, Janis Siegel, Alan Paul and Cheryl Bentyne had considered calling it quits. But then they decided they wanted to continue singing and keep the legacy alive as well. The new member has an unusual name, Trist Curless. BETCHA DIDN’T KNOW…that back in the fairly recent day, Roberta Flack was planning to do a Nat “King” Cole tribute album. But upon learning that there was one in the works by his daughter, Natalie Cole, Flack dropped the project. MEMORIES: “We’re in This Love Together” (Al Jarreau), “You Put a Move on My Heart” (Quincy Jones featuring Tamia), “PartTime Lover” (Stevie Wonder), “Let’s Go Crazy” (Prince and the Revolution), “Turn Off the Lights” (Teddy Pendergrass), “Zoom” (the Commodores), “Out of Sight” (James Brown), “Straight Up” (Paula Abdul). BLESSINGS to John Collins, Danton Wilson, Janice Wilson, Fred Holsey Jr., Terry Cabell, Arma Suggs, Carl Jones, Douglass Ware, Kipper Ware, Brenda Franklin and William Griffin. WORDS OF THE WEEK, from Albert Einstein: “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” Let the music play!

‘Being Mary Jane’ star in altercation at Atlanta Waffle House

“Being Mary Jane” star Raven Goodwin lost her cool at an Atlanta Waffle House after she allegedly got into a verbal altercation with another woman in the eatery. According to witnesses, Raven requested to move to a near-by table where customers were about to leave. Apparently, the people at the table lingered around, infuriating Raven who wound up arguing with one of the ladies in the bathroom. The woman allegedly called her a “fat b*tch” and Raven responded with broke jokes. Footage found on Instagram shows Raven and the woman screaming at each other. Waffle House employees stepped in to separate the ladies before things escalated. Raven was reportedly asked to leave the restaurant. In related “Being Mary Jane” news, BET recently renewed the popular series for a third season.

SPORTS Mayor Reed and city celebrate Atlanta Hawks’ record-breaking season

June 4-10, 2015

By Terry Shropshire Not since the Ronald Reagan White House days – when Cabbage Patch Dolls were the craze, Reebok was the biggest shoe company in the world and New Kids on the Block was actually the hottest music group in America – has the city of Atlanta been so infused and amped up to this level of excitement from a professional basketball standpoint. Of course, that was the era of Dominique Wilkins’ aerial acrobatics that captured the imagination of a generation of fans here in the Capitol of the New South during the 1980s. Those days of anticipation, excitement and fervor returned — and then some — in the 2015 incarnation of the Atlanta Hawks as

they drove towards a record-breaking season that made Phillips Arena and downtown Atlanta thunder on a nightly basis. On Wednesday, June 3, Mayor Kasim Reed hosted a Hawks Day Celebration at Atlanta City Hall to illuminate the 2014-2015 season that pales almost every Hawks season in history. Hawks CEO Steve Koonin, Coach Mike Budenholzer, Hawks players and fans joined the Mayor to celebrate this season in which the Hawks achieved a record-breaking 60-22 regular season record, won the Southeast Division title and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history.

Anderson Field gets facelift Lil Wayne reportedly with Atlanta Falcons help spit at refs during

charity game

The City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation recently celebrated the newly-renovated field at Anderson Park in Northwest Atlanta at a dedication ceremony. The $1.9 million renovation, which includes $900,000 in Community Development Block Grant program funds and a $200,000 donation from the Atlanta Falcons to Park Pride, transformed the natural grass sports field to a turf-surfaced field. The upgraded field is more durable,

requires less maintenance and will be usable in all weather conditions. Anderson Field renovations and other recent park improvements citywide are a part of Mayor Kasim Reed’s commitment to provide new recreational opportunities to Atlanta youth. After the ceremony, the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation conducted a football clinic that focused on teaching football fundamentals and character-building skills with more than 150 Centers of Hope participants. “The Department of Parks and Recreation is committed to stewarding our city’s green spaces for generations to come,” said Amy Phuong, Commissioner for the department. “We are so proud of the newly-renovated field and we will continue to work with the Atlanta business and philanthropic organizations to upgrade, expand and build other recreational facilities for our youth.” This year, the Department of Parks and Recreation has acquired 171 acres of land, which included 14 parks for Atlanta residents and visitors to enjoy.

Lil Wayne is a fan of sports. There’s usually some type of sports reference in his projects, and he even made a whole (really good) song inspired by “Sports Center.” As sports fanatics are wont to do, Lil Wayne got a little crazy over a contest over the weekend. And it was a charity game. Not an NBA Finals matchup or anything of similar stakes … a charity game. Lil Wayne was at one in St. Louis and thought the referee was making some bad calls. Instead of being diplomatic, Lil Wayne was caught on camera charging at one of the referees. He also allegedly spit at one. People eventually separated Weezy from the ref. It’s looking like the Cash Money situation is really making him irritable, aye?

Albany State University chemistry Keke Palmer inspires students department gains accreditation at Atlanta Urban League

By Terry Shropshire related careers, according to Wrensford. “This is a great accomplishment that will benefit the chemistry students at Albany State University. It is a strong indicator that the chemistry program has offered the national level of quality in teaching and research,” said Seong Seo, Ph.D., associate professor of chemistry. All chemistry faculty members are engaged in research that includes mentoring undergraduate students. Most faculty members have received federal funding to support their research. “Chemistry faculty members have brought in more than $10 million in grants as principal investigators and co-principal investigators over a 10year period,” Wrensford said. More than 85 percent of ASU chemistry graduates go on to careers in the field or to graduate and professional schools, according to the department’s 2010 through 2012 graduate assessments and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools assessment. “We are dedicated more than ever to continue the progress, growth, and advancements necessary to be a competitive school in the field of chemistry,” Seo said.

The Albany State University chemistry program received three-year certification by the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Professional Training for excellence in chemistry education. The accreditation, the department’s first by the committee, validates the Albany State University Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree program as one that provides quality academic and training opportunities for students. “This has been a long process, but one that the chemistry faculty has pursued rigorously because we know that we have a stellar chemistry program,” said Louise Wrensford, Ph.D., chemistry professor, interim vice provost for Office of Research and Sponsored Programs and dean for the ASU Graduate School. “With this certification, we hope to attract more students who are serious about a career in the field of chemistry.” The CPT-granted accreditation is a result of the department’s strong academic program, research initiatives, active faculty, graduates success, and the state-of-the-art equipment and resources used to prepare graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to be competitive in chemistry and , 2015

Keke Palmer is an irrepressible mound of energy. She came through the doors like a blast of sunrays that lit up the Urban League of Greater Atlanta during a tour of their downtown headquarters offices. On the eve of the “Spirit of the League” awards gala, The Akeela and the Bee and Brotherly Love star was striking, not just because of her new look, but because she was amazingly devoid of any pretense as she hugged staff members as if they were her relatives. Lauren Keyana “Keke” Palmer has this “front-porch, around-the-way-girl” vibe that enabled her to immediately connect with the school-aged students whom she inspired as she regaled them with her journey of uncertainty from suburban Chicago to eventual stardom in Hollywood. She let them know that she was one of them, that she is them. With her mother, the single member of her “entourage,” at her flank, Palmer and ULGA president and CEO discussed the many programs the ULGA has to uplift and embolden the youth. This is a favorite topic of Palmer’s. The 22-year-old works with the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of the American char-

ity Cool To Be Smart program, speaking to children about the importance of learning. She is also a supporter of Urban Farming, the Girl Scouts and the YWCA & Saving Our Daughters to tackle the issue of bullying in our nation. Palmer told the young teens they have a choice on how to live their lives. “If you live your life with jealously, you will always live your life in fear. That is not what God is about. He is not the author of fear. so when you see yourself going there, know that it is not the truth,” she said. “Remember when you get to that place to calm yourself. Ask yourself, ‘what is really bothering me? What is it that I really want? What is it that really makes me happy?’ “Remember to ask yourself those questions,” Palmer continued, “because those are the questions that are going to allow you to reach that place that we’re all on this Earth searching for. We’re all looking for that freedom, for that love, that thing that tells me ‘Ahhh, this is me!’” “You have to be truthful to yourself and you have to be truthful to the people around you.”

GUEST COMMENTARY

Politicizing donations to Clinton Foundation Like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s largest philanthropy that primarily funds education, world health and population projects, the Clinton Foundation was established to address such issues as climate change, global health, economic development, health and wellness and problems involving women and girls. In a crass effort to derail Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign bid, major Republican figures and Fox News, their partner-in-crime, are peddling the idea that there is something inherently wrong with supporting private efforts to improve the world. As Media Matters observes, they are “falsely equating donations to the Clinton Foundation with contributions to a Democratic political campaign.” The media watchdog group observes, “The foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, which means it is ‘absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office.’” Media Matters wrote, “Paul Waldman, an American Prospect senior writer and former Media Matters senior fellow, criticized Politico reporter Dylan Byers for drawing a misleading ‘parallel between donating to a candidate’s campaign and donating to a charitable foundation run by an ex-president.’ “Other media figures have similarly made the false political campaign comparison. Fox News host Gretchen Carlson, Breitbart.com, National Review Online, and HotAir.com, all suggested a donation to the foundation was equivalent to financing Democratic candidates. “As Waldman explained at The Washington Post, ‘it’s notable that everyone is now treating the Clinton Foundation as if it has long been central to sort of scheme to personally benefit the Clintons, and not a charitable foundation.’ He added that ‘judging by the way the foundation is now talked about – as if anyone who has had any association with it is tainted – you’d think it was running a network of international assassins instead of distributing malaria medication.’” Partisan critics conveniently neglect to note that prominent Republicans are also generous contributors to the Clinton Foundation. For example, Rupert Murdoch, founder of the News Corporation Foundation, and his son, James, have given more than a million dollars to the Clinton Foundation. In fact, more than a dozen news organizations have donated to the foundation. Aside from the overt political attack on the Clinton Foundation, the case of George Stephanopoulos, a former Clinton administration press secretary, il-

lustrates the problems associated with a political operative switching careers in hopes of being viewed as a credible journalist. Too often TV talking heads are labeled “journalists” when they are anything but. As the American Press Institute notes, “Journalism is the activity of gathering, assessing, creating, and presenting news and information.” In other words, it’s not merely the ability to share one’s opinions. Stephanopoulos erred by making a $75,000 contribution to the Clinton Foundation, knowing it could call into question his ability to be fair. He compounded the mistake by failing to disclose it to the public. Like it or not, if journalists want to maintain their credibility, they must refrain from participating in overt political acts or behavior that can be perceived that way. Britt Hume of Fox said, “…if there’s one thing he [Stephanopoulos] needed to do in doing that was to sever any real or apparent ties with the Clintons. Contributing to their foundation is one thing. And now it also turns out that he participated in panels and other events connected to the Clinton Global Initiative. It is a mistake to do that. You want to be seen as independent.” Evidently, you get a pass if you’re at Fox News. “Fox News has attacked ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos for participating in Clinton Foundation-affiliated events, calling it a ‘mistake’ that compromises ‘good coverage,’” Media Matters found. “But Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo moderated or participated in at least eight [Clinton Global Initiative] events between 2008 and 2013 while at CNBC.” Yet, Fox is not calling that a “mistake” that compromises “good coverage.” Judy Woodruff, the co-anchor and managing editor of PBS NewsHour, was criticized for making a paltry $250 donation in 2010 to the Clinton Haiti Relief Fund. She issued a statement, saying: “I made the gift in response to an urgent joint appeal from former President Clinton and then-President George W. Bush for aid to the victims of the Haiti earthquake,” Woodruff explained in an email to the Wall Street Journal. “Seeing the massive loss of human life and the terrible conditions for survivors, I wanted to make a contribution and saw this as a way to do that.” Yes, “journalists” must walk a fine line, not crossing over into political partisanship. And, yes, they must avoid even the appearance of such activity. But let’s be equally clear: The Clinton Foundation is a highly respected charity, not a political offshoot of Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Better pay comes when we demand it By Jesse Jackson Los Angeles just voted to raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020. The nation’s second-biggest city joins Seattle, San Francisco and little Emeryville, Calif., in forging the way to a decent minimum. Similar measures are now being considered in New York City, Kansas City, Mo., and Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital. Facebook is now paying its workers a $15 minimum and joins Apple and Microsoft in demanding that its contractors pay a $15 minimum and offer paid leave days. These victories are a product of the demonstrations and protests of fast food and other low-wage workers. They risked their jobs to demand decency. They put a human face on workers who labor full time but can’t lift their families out of poverty. They exposed the lie that these were transitory jobs for the young while they went to college or high school. Their demonstrations — organized under the hashtag slogan #FightFor15 — drew national press attention. Their struggles touched the hearts of citizens of conscience. They built the coalition that forced the politicians to respond. Dr. Martin Luther King taught us that “freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” There are three ways to respond to repression, he told us. The first is acquiescence, adjusting quietly to injustice and becoming conditioned to it. “Been down so long it feels like up to me.” Acquiescence, he warned, turns people into part of the problem. The second way to respond is with physical violence and corrosive hatred. But violence never solves problems; it simply creates more difficult and complicated problems. An eye for an eye, he warned, would leave us all blinded. The third way is nonviolent resistance. Nonviolence rejects acquiescence and violence.

It confronts the oppressor, gives voice to the oppressed, and exposes the injustice. It starts always against the odds, so it requires faith. “Faith,” Dr. King wrote, “is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” The #FightFor15 workers had faith. They chose to resist, not accept their poverty wages. They demonstrated for decency. And they have created a movement that surely will spread across the country. California is one of eight states that ban the subminimum wage that is inflicted on so-called “tipped workers,” the wait staff and service workers that serve our food, clear our plates or carry our bags. California also voted to start publishing the names of companies that have more than 100 workers on Medicaid and the costs that they force on the states. Informed customers may well prefer to do business with high-road employers rather than those profiting from a low road. Most of our news coverage follows the frozen partisan politics of Washington. There, Republican leaders in Congress won’t even allow a vote on a modest Democratic proposal for a $12-an-hour minimum wage. The only time Congress seems to act is when the corporate community wants a tax break or a trade deal passed, or when the Pentagon demands more money to waste. But across the country, people are beginning to stir. Blacks and whites are joining together to demonstrate that #BlackLivesMatter. Latinos are demanding immigration reforms that will bring millions out of the shadow economy. Gays and lesbians are demanding equal rights. Women are demanding equal pay, and men and women are insisting that the decision to have a child has to be one that they and not politicians make. Change will come, but only when people demand it and force their politicians to salute.
