Calls to get Blackglen project prioritised

The major delays and congestion around Lambs Cross and at the Enniskerry Road Aikens Village junction, especially at morning peak time could be eradicated if the upgrade work was carried out at Lambs Cross and Blackglen Road, it has been claimed. Cllr Lettie McCarthy said, “It is By Rachel Murray wrong to put this very busy road on the long finger and not give it priorisition and other costs as well as conty. walking on the road would be taking their life in their hands. "The council's failure to take action to upgrade the road flies in the face of its own initiative to encourage schools to get pupils to walk or cycle to school - no parent is prepared to have their child seriously injured or killed when no safe walking/cycling route to school is available," he said.

Not in the current programme

Sandyford Informer contacted DLR to confirm whether or not funding has been secured to allow the approved Blackglen Upgrade Scheme to progress from Lambs Cross as far as the footpath leading into Ticknock. A spokesperson for the Council has stated that the Blackglen Road improvement scheme is noted as a six year road objective in the Council's current Development Plan. The route is currently not contained in the Council's Capital Works' Programme but it is under consideration for inclusion into the Capital Programme which will be reviewed in early 2014.

Sandyford In Brief... Residents of DLR asked to ignore ‘we buy second-hand cars’ signs

Residents are becoming increasingly annoyed at the sight of ‘we buy second-hand cars’ posters and the campaign intensifies over bank holiday weekends. Cllr. Lettie McCarthy, (Lab) said she received six complaints from different areas over the October bank holiday weekend. "These posters are illegal and unsightly within estates and causes upset to residents. They are also placed along motorway off ramps which is very distracting and dangerous for drivers," she said. She advised that nobody would should this number or entertain this type of behaviour out of fairness to decent honest hard-working people who make their living by buying and selling second-hand cars. "Car dealers, who are paying rent and rates, employing staff and generally keeping their business going through difficult times do not need this added grief that these illegal traders are heaping on top of them. I sincerely hope people would pause for thought before they call this number and consider the people that they may be putting out of work," she concluded.

Facing an uneducated audience

I recently had the experience of speaking to a group who had the highest per capita number of university degrees I will probably ever see in front of my, and to my amazement and dismay, one of the highest levels of ignorance. Unfortunately, many of the older members of that audience seemed to feel that their high degree count entitled them to not listen to presentations they knew they were going to disagree with, which meant I’ve never seen so many blank faces in an audience either. Or not since I had to deal with teenage boys who had been sent to their school library because they were too disruptive in class – but that’s a different story and on the whole the teenage boys were easier to engage with. So where was my blanked faced audience? It was at a conference on GMO technology organized by the EPA last month. I’d sat through two days of watching speaker after speaker re-define terms to make them fit their arguments, say that facts were proved for which there is no evidence and generally bring the scientific community into disrepute before it was my turn. I’m not going to go through my own speech again here – you can find the presentation on line, along with all the others, on the EPA website at http://www.epa.ie/pubs/conferencesandevents/ gmoconf. What I want to talk about here is what I learned at that conference about the poor quality of science teaching in our schools and universities. It is disgracefully obvious that science students in Ireland are not taught the most basic principle of

I don’t believe that genetic engineering is inherently evil – I believe it is an enormously powerful tool that needs to be understood and used properly if we are to maximize it’s potential for good scientific research – how to evaluate information. They do not understand what constitutes scientific proof. When I talk to very senior friends within the university community they tell me that philosophy of science is not taught at any level. Since it is this which allows us to understand the data that is put in front of us it is hardly surprising that we get badly skewed results that allow the bio-pharmaceutical companies to market as safe untested products. Geneticists don’t even seem to understand that you can’t conduct a long term safety study if you don’t have a control group that hasn’t been exposed to GMOs. One well known figure in Irish genetics, whose speech was more that of a missionary than a scientist, thinks that hybridization is the same thing as genetic engineering (and he wasn’t the only one). I am a largely self-taught scientist. I did, however, start by learning philosophy of science, I do know how to evaluate data, and I can read and understand statistics. This means I have a better than average chance of spotting wool when someone is trying to pull it over my eyes. I don’t believe that genetic engineering is inher-

I’m pleading here for good science teaching from primary schools onwards for all our children, and for the philosophy and ethics of science to be included right from the start in that teaching, instead of the rote learning which is used at all levels at the moment, not only here in Ireland but around the world.

...and a word about Sweden

I can feel my blood pressure rising again so I’ll just finish with a quick mention that I spent the week in Sweden helping a friend make rag rugs from recycled fabrics for her new B&B in the beautiful county of Skane. Outside her house there are two large wheelie bins divided into eight sections! They aren’t all used yet – household rubbish isn’t separated as far as that – but the potential is in place before the perceived need arises. Doesn’t that make a nice change? I also got to see the local district heating plant where waste is converted into heat – yes, the dreaded incineration. Done properly it is entirely safe and can benefit the local community instead of being feared. Irish anti-incineration campaigners please note. This plant was in the heart of the community instead of being hidden.

I have a better than average chance of spotting wool when someone is trying to pull it over my eyes

Battleground for GMOs Over in the US, where restrictions on GMO foods is not as strict as in Europe, the battleground has moved to food labelling. In Washington state a referendum to make GMO food labelling mandatory became a major test for the power of the big bio-agri corporations such as Monsanto. These firms have pumped millions of dollars into the 'no' campaign. Initiative 522, as the plebescite was called was defeated with a result of 55% to 45%. Early opinion polls were strongly in favour so the power of big biotech has been amply demonstrated.

Remember that while the sight of leaping salmon might leave you itching to cast a line for them, the fishing season is now closed to allow the fish to spawn in peace. Now is a great time to see one of natures great spectacles: The Atlantic Salmon as they migrate up our rivers to their breeding grounds. Orion's belt, swords and stars Orion is one of the most recognisable constellations in winter, and this month it starts to make an appearance later on in the evenings. Go outside at around 11pm and look towards the south-east, where you will see the familiar trio of bright stars that make up Orion’s Belt. Located around the Belt are various other stars that make up the rest of Orion’s body, such as the shoulder and knee stars, located above and below Orion’s Belt, respectively. If you can see the constellation from a darker area, you’ll be able to see the stars that make up his arms and shield. Marking one of Orion’s shoulders is the star Betelgeuse, located to the upper left of the constellation. You may notice that the star has an orange-red tinge to it, and this is because Betelgeuse is a red supergiant. The star is huge, and if it was placed in the centre of our own solar system, it would engulf Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, and possibly even Jupiter. That’s roughly 1.5 billion kilometres across. Betelgeuse is one of the largest and brightest stars we can observe. Eventually, Betelgeuse will explode in a supernova, outshining the Moon in the night sky and easily visible during the day. From Orion’s Belt hangs his sword, and in the group of stars we can see the famous Orion Nebula. This can be seen with the naked eye but you may need to find a dark location to see it properly - you’ll spot it as a

small fuzzy patch in amongst the stars. Indeed, the nebula itself is a nursery for new stars, and astronomers have even found new solar systems forming inside it! Orion’s Belt can be used as a pointer to find Sirius (the Dog Star). Simply imagine a line going through the three stars towards the left and that line will point to Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Garden Growing With Gerry Norton Finishing up the gardening year

Now that the clocks have changed and winter has officially arrived I am still surprised by the growth in the garden. I’m surprised to see that a variety of different plants, shrubs in particular, are still in flower and show no sign of shutting up for winter which one would expect at this time of year. I suppose that the lovely summer we have all enjoyed had a part to play in this by prolonging the growing season. November can be a lovely, if cold month so let’s hope that we get the chance to do all those tidy up jobs we’ve been planning to do in some comfort. A last lawn look

I mentioned in last month's article that leaves should be raked and removed from lawns as they will do damage if left to lie on the grass for long periods. At this time in the year I mow lawns every two weeks rather than every week as there is still some growth albeit slow.

n Don’t waste your money on those multi-seed packs birds don’t enjoy When you next plan to mow your lawn perhaps for the last time this year don’t use the collector on the mower. Instead let the mower spew out a mix of finely cut grass and carved up leaves as this will act as a great mulch for your lawn over the next few months. As long as the leaves are sliced up by the mower they will do no

damage to the lawn. Plant trees now

November is the best month of the year to plant trees as they will spend the winter establishing and getting used to their new home which means that they will flourish by next spring and take off next summer when the soil temperature increases.

Trees are now available at all good garden centres and nurseries as bare root trees. If you are lucky enough to have a big garden there are a huge variety of trees to choose from which won’t cost a fortune. If, on the other hand, your space is limited think about smaller species which can be grown in containers such as Crab Apple-malus, Mountain Ash-sorbus, or Irish Yew-Taxus baccata. Just upsize the container every few years and these small trees will do fine and make a wonderful addition to your garden-patio. Don't feed the fish...

Regular readers will know that I have a small pond from which I get great enjoyment watching all the aquatic life go about it’s business. As the days shorten and the temperatures drop pond fish will stop eating and go into a temporary hibernation so don’t offer them any food from about now until February-March next year.

...do feed the birds

On the other hand our winged friends, the birds, will need all we can offer them. I’ve said many times over previous articles that peanuts and sunflower seeds are the best for all species of birds. Don’t waste your money on those multi-seed packs which are bulked up with seeds that most of our usual garden birds don’t enjoy and which will germinate in small spaces on your patio and nearby areas. Spring in the offing

Finally as Halloween has passed start to plan where you would like spring bulbs to appear next year. There are a huge variety of bulbs available such as Daffs, Tulips, Crocuses, Snowdrops or whatever you enjoy. One of my absolute favourites is Snakes-head fritillary. Try to get the purple rather than the white flower. Plant them in small groups and hold your breath until next spring.

Finally folks, if you need any information on gardening or if you have any tips or suggestions which I can pass on, please send them to me at livinglandescapes@eircom.net. I would be delighted to quote for any/all of your garden requirements from set-up organic vegetable plots to restoration of neglected gardens, design, planting and maintenance. No charge for initial visit and I will travel within reason.

Manchester calling Jason, your 'First World Problems Tour', comes to Vicar St, Dublin in November. What can your Dublin fans expect from the show? Well I think and the reviews are saying that this is my best show yet. So if you've enjoyed my previous shows or bits on telly then you'll like this. I've worked hard to get it right and by the time I get to Dublin it'll be at it's peak! What do you think of Irish humour compared with other places? Ireland has such a great comedy heritage, it's known the world over for it's sense of humour so you can only really play Ireland if you're at the top of your game as there's a strong possibility there's a few people in the audience funnier then you! What's your favourite thing to do when you come to Dublin? Well I have lots of family and friends there so I visit and hang out with them. Maybe lunch at Canal Bank Cafe with their chicken wings, a few drinks at Jack Nealons on Capel Street, do the show and then head out into town with a few local Dublin comics before ending it, regretfully by taking a Zaytoons kebab back to Westbury! Dubliners have a reputation for a love of all things alcohol related and for having the crack, do you think this is a bad thing or is it one of the reasons you like the Irish? I personally don't think there's a massive difference with the amount of drinking in any major city. I wouldn't single Dublin out as drinking too much, the only real difference is you've got your own drink!

Jason Manford Interview with Rachel Murray

The Informer I would always say, give it a go, just do it. There's no worse feeling in your heart than the regret of 'what if...?'. If you are gonna go for it, listen to family and friends conversations, read all you an read and just don't expect to get paid, if you're doing it for the money, you'll never make it work On a personal level, what's the greatest bit of advice you've been given? Peter Kay told me to always treat the job like a 'proper' job. Most comics can get by working for 20 minutes a night but Peter told me 'the rest of the country are doing 40 hours plus a week, so what makes you any different?". It's that work ethic that has got me this far.

You are of Irish descent. Where in Ireland are your family from?

Apart from yourself, what other comedians do you really admire?

Dublin mainly, Templeogue, but also Tipperary and Limerick.

I am a massive fan of so much comedy but I especially love watching comics who do things that I don't or can't. So Louis CK and Tommy Tiernan for me are to of the greats, but then I love the silliness of Jason Byrne and Ross Noble.

What's your fondest memory of growing up in Manchester? Too many to count. Fortunately. We were poor (starts Hovis music) but it was a house full of love and laughter and music. My family were and still are all in Irish folk bands and it wasn't unusual to be found fast asleep at the age of 7 under a speaker at the local pub while my nana serenaded drunks with her version of The Spinning Wheel. You started in comedy when you were just seventeen years old, is the love and passion for comedy still as strong now as it was then? Yeah, if not its even more because I'm good at it now! Back then you think you're good but now I have the proof. When I listen back to tapes of my old gigs, I hear these little titters but now when I look out and see proper laughs I think 'how did I ever do this without them?" Have you any advice for people trying to get into comedy?

There are so many other comedians around at the moment, how do you keep your shows and sketches different from all the others? You can only talk about what you know, I'm a Dad and I'm a genuine regular guy so I get annoyed at the same things as most people. I'm not ground breaking, I don't talk about anything political and I'm not trying to make you think. Just two hours of laughter, that'll do for me. What always makes you laugh? A dog walking in to a glass door on You've Been Framed. What's been your stand out moment of your career so far? Just being able to go on tour. And have sell-out gigs at huge theatres and arenas is a constant highlight. It's just an absolute privilege every night.

All about Dublin 1

A Place in the City Swords Castle once housed knights and soldiers, holy men and Dutch settlers, and it was ravaged by Edward the Bruce, brother of the famed Scots leader Robert the Bruce. It even acted as a last stand of defiance in 1641 against Cromwellian forces, with up to 200 men slain on the spot. Gradually Swords Castle fell into ruin, until the Senior Parks Superintendent with Fingal County Council, Michael Lynch, be gan the crusade to restore it, backed by works foreman Cathal Murray. That was around 1996 and two years later, the first part of the project, the Constable’s Tower, was completed and opened. The old church is presently being restored. The chapel measures 52ft by 17ft and dates from the mid part of the 14th century. The castle dates from around 1200 and was the residence of John Comyn Archbishop of Dublin. It took up to 270 years to complete and during that time had many varied occupants. In the 1970s, an archaeological assessment was carried out on the site and in a posthole in the old chapel, a coin was found. It was

marked Philip IV of France and was minted in 1307. It suggested the builders at that period could have come from France. Excavations also uncovered a chamber that had been described in 14th century writings. It consisted of a pavement with medieval tiles, depicting a lion and floral design. These were similar to finds at Mellifont in Co. Louth and Christchurch. In many respects the full history of Swords Castle remains to be written - and found. There are locations within its grounds still to be

fully explored as the restoration work continues. The impressive walls measure 305m - one of the biggest enclosures in the country. The castle also includes the ruins of a banqueting hall and apartments for knights and squires, all of which have yet to be brought back to their former glory. An excerpt from 'Fingal - from the Danes to the Delvin' with paintings by Hugh F. Ryan and text by Hubert Murphy. It is published by Cottage Publications and costs around e22.

Lesser Known Dubliners

Ellen Byrne In August, 1842, Mrs. Ellen Byrne, Rathmines, was tried at the Commission Court, Dublin, for the murder of her husband, Augustine. The couple, who lived fairly comfortably, were heavy drinkers and often fought. After his death, estimated to have happened on July 3, she remained in the room with the body for five days before one of her sons entered and discovered the body. The time delay became the point on which the case against her stood or fell - were the visible injuries the result of a violent struggle or through decomposition. She was charged on several counts beating him to death and/or strangling or suffocating him. Ellen Byrne denied the charges and said that he (a) died or natural causes on Friday, (b) later changed to Saturday, the day on which the body was discovered. When the trial began in Green Street on August 15 it had the attraction of a train wreck. The Freeman's Journal reported: "the crowds of the idle and the curious who congregated in this portion of the city were so dense as to be wholly incalculable, and it is not a little surprising that no accident or fatality of any description whatsoever should have occurred ..." "Her appearance in court produced a great sensation, and the utmost curiosity was evinced to catch a glimpse of her face or person. She was attired in the deepest weeds ... and wore a double veil of dense

crepe, which, even when lifted, fell around her face in such thick drapery as to render her face almost invisible. In her hand she held a rich bouquet, and her demeanour throughout the whole proceedings was characterised by the most unruffled composure, and the utmost self-possession." The two-day trial was dominated by medical experts who were divided on how long the body had lain in the room, whether the apparent injuries were inflicted by his wife or the result of natural decay, even if the death had been a natural one or as the result of an assault. The resulting 'Not Guilty' verdict came as a great disappointment to the crowd outside the courthouse and Mrs. Byrne was unable to leave. The Freenman's Journal wrote: "... were it not for a ruse of the police she might have remained in the court-house till midnight. At seven o'clock, however. Mr. Inspector Wade ordered a covered car to be drawn up at the entrance to Newgate, and he conducted into the vehicle a female resembling the prisoner in stature, but who was dressed in such deep weeds that her face was rendered wholly invisible. The pseudo Mrs. Byrne entered the car with the inspector, and away rolled the jarvey, escorted by a number of the horse police, amid the hooting and angry exclamations of the infuriate populace." Shortly after the crowd dispersed the true Mrs. Byrne drove away with her sons into obscurity.

Dublin Emotional healing through life alignment Advice ‘Life Alignment is a system of vibrational healing that facilitates the release of energetic and emotional blockages from the physical and subtle bodies. It assists in the experience of empowerment and awareness.’ Using applied kinesiology (gentle muscle testing) and/or a pendulum, we ask the body questions. Guided by the weaknesses that are found in the body system, a priority is chosen for the Life Alignment session. The priority in a session is the outstanding blockage that needs to be resolved first. Working on a particular issue is not decided mentally. What needs to be resolved could be a story with no conscious recollection. The details soon filter through when we give our attention. Working through the Past

Breanna Coyle is a Qualified Life Alignment Practitioner

Our life stories are affected by beliefs and experiences we may have long forgotten. A word can trigger that memory to rise to the surface, where it can be revisited in the light of awareness - today. Bringing the experience to consciousness in a session will allow you to make new decisions and release unfinished emotional responses. A peaceful presence resides in a session, with the vortex cards to assist you to work through old stories, with a new strength. In this presence, a new experience of personal wisdom can be found, felt and perceived. The body and its higher self knows when it is ready to bring something to light, so you do not need to worry that you will uncover anything that you are not ready for. Whatever comes in a session is guided by your own inner intelligence. I facilitate your understanding of your own nature and use the highly

energised magnetic cards to release, detoxify and bring light to your energetic system. Each session of Life Alignment follows a different path to resolution. We work from a methodology of practice, determined specifically by your needs as an individual. Each session lasts between 1-2 hours. You remain fully clothed while lying on a plinth and covered by a blanket. There is a mix of quietness and talking. You might fall asleep or notice a lot of visual impressions. Each experience is different and very personal. How Change Happens

Life Alignment usually addresses one priority in a session and is not necessarily an ongoing or continuous method of healing. You might come occasionally when there is a particular time in your life you feel

you are struggling. After a Life Alignment session you will find that you do not react to certain situations in the same way you may have responded before. Sometimes the changes are immediately noticeable and sometimes it is only after time that you look back and notice that life has taken a turn and created something new without you doing anything in particular intentionally. There is a natural quality that becomes part of you again, so subtly. A transition may not be definably recognisable but the same decisions you once made are no longer applicable. Life Alignment techniques and methodology have been developed by Dr. Jeff Levin, DNM (Doctor of Natural Medicine). For further reading on Life Alignment, see 'Life Alignment - Heal your Life & Discover Your Soul's True Purpose' by Philippa Lubbock (Watkins Publishing, 2010), or visit the Life Alignment website: www.life-alignment.com 'Life Alignment is a journey of Discovery......' Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag Battlefield 4 Developer: Ubisoft Montreal • Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U, Next Gen Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is finally here, and while many of us thought that the third game was the series' most exotic location yet, Black Flag beats it in that department. Black Flag brings the player to the early 18th century, and focuses on the areas around the Caribbean Sea. The first thing that comes to mind when playing Black Flag is its absolutely stunningly beautiful and detailed world. It's more of a fluid open-world in Black Flag, and the player will find great joy in simply exploring the many islands that make up the game world. Of course, there's plenty of main missions to do too, and they follow along the usual Assassin's Creed mantra- exhilarating, fast-paced, fun and bloody. The biggest addition to this game in the franchise is the inclusion of being able to control your own pirate ship, the Jackdaw. This is the games centrepiece, and is an absolute joy to behold. Overall, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag just may be the best game so far in the beloved franchise. Long time fans will love it, while newcomers will find it an excellent jumping in point. Graham Connor's Movie Advice Captain Phillips HHHHH

Directed by Paul Greengrass. Starring Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Max Martini. Richard Phillips is the Captain of the Maersk Alabama, an American cargo ship. Hijacked off the coast of Somalia, what can Captain Phillips do to ensure the safety of his crew? Captain Phillips is the true story of the Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo vessel hijacked in over 200 years. Paul Greengrass is the master of wringing the tension and drama from true-life stories – he directed both Bloody Sunday and United 93. Tom Hanks is the everyman American actor – can anything go wrong with this film? Well, in fact very little can. Captain Phillips is a powerful, tension-filled film. Hanks is the strongest he has been since Saving Private Ryan, and as the film progresses you really feel for him, you feel the fear and the hopelessness of his situation. Yet, the real heart of this film lies not in Phillips, but in Muse, the leader of the Somali pirates, played Barkhad Abdi. An unknown before this, he excels in the role as the man pushed by circumstance to the very edge of his own humanity. He is the true revelation in this film. A taut, powerful and refreshing film that is not afraid to make the bad guys just as human as the good guys. Notice how Barkhad Abdi sleeps when you first see him - it says everything about his character.

Advice: A must see.

Thor 2: The Dark World HHHHH Directed by Alan Taylor. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman & Tom Hiddleston. With Loki locked away in prison in Asgard, Thor finds he must return to Earth and embark on his most perilous journey to save the Nine Realms of his own kingdom from Malekith, leader of the Dark Elves. Thor was a load of cobblers but it certainly was fun, one of the better Marvel films in all honesty and a complete surprise. When ‘they’ make a sequel and start talking about making it darker that sets my alarm bells ringing – why change a good formula?? As it turns out, Thor 2 really, really works. It is darker, much darker and deals with a far bigger palette thematically but, very cleverly, it doesn’t lose that fun element that made the first so appealing. In fact, you will laugh out loud at least three times during this film, and sometimes in the strangest of places. Hemsworth is Thor, there is no doubt about that and everyone else is secondary to him, this is Hemsworth’s film. There are a few loose ends (such as the implied love story between Thor and Sif goes nowhere) but nothing that will make you throw your popcorn at the screen in disgust. Thor 2: The Dark World is just different enough to make it fresh but not too different to annoy fans, it is a great popcorn film. Make sure to stay to the end credits though, like all Marvel films, for the stings.

Advice: Friday night was made for this.

Developer: EA DICE • Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Next Gen One of the biggest games of 2013 has finally arrived, much to the rejoice of gamers everywhere. Whereas Call of Duty has always been a more flashy franchise, Battlefield has always set itself apart in many ways. Battlefield 4 continues this difference from Call of Duty, and results in a realistic, fun if familiar addition on the series. Gameplay is as tight as ever in this instalment, and gun-play is smooth, layered and incredibly visceral at times. The same goes for the multiple vehicles that can be used. EA DICE have always prided themselves on delivering a true combat experience, and they have only bettered on what Battlefield 3 achieved back in 2011. While the single player campaign is short lived and full of lame, cardboard cut-out characters, its true brilliance comes in the form of multi-player, something that is hugely addictive and more than just a by-the-numbers multi-player add-on. It's a pretty impressive entry into the series, though I do wish they would shake up the series a bit. It's more of the same, but better. Game Reaction: 8/10

Dealing with gout Q: What is the best treatment for gout? I get an attack of gout every couple of months or so. Is there any way to prevent it?

A: Gout is a form of arthritis and can cause intense pain, accompanied by a hot, swollen joint. The big toe is the most commonly affected area although the ankles, wrists, knees and fingers can also be affected. Gout is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the body. Uric acid (or urate) is produced when the body breaks down (metabolises) purines, a constituent of certain foods. High uric acid levels can be the result of large amounts being produced due to a diet high in purines, or when the kidney has difficulty excreting uric acid in the urine. Too much uric acid in the blood leads to it being deposited in the joints, causing pain and inflammation. An attack usually develops over a few hours and last 3 – 10 days. The first-line treatment for gout is usually prescription anti-inflammatory medication such as diclofenac, naproxen, or newer drugs such as Arcoxia. These should be taken at the first sign of an attack and continued for a couple of days after the attack resolves. An alternative treatment is with colchicine, although side effects can be troublesome and colcichine is very dangerous if too much is taken. Rest and elevating the joint can also help, and any knocks to the affected area should be avoided. Applying an ice pack for half an hour a few times a day will also help. For cases of gout that do not respond to first-line treatments, steroids can be used but these can cause side effects if used in the longer term. For those who get regular attacks of gout, a preventative medication will often be recommended. This is usually the drug allopurinol which helps lower uric acid levels. Allopurinol needs to be taken regularly and will have no effect if started during an attack of gout. It may be necessary to take it for a number of months before a benefit is seen and treatment may be continued indefinitely. There are also a number of lifestyle changes that can help to prevent attacks of gout. As uric acid is produced as a breakdown product of purines, reducing intake of foods with high levels of purines in the diet will help prevent gout. The major culprits in this respect are organ meats like kidney, other meats (mainly red meat but also poultry and pork) and oily fish like sardines, anchovies and herring. High levels of alcohol consumption contribute to gout with beers and stouts especially having high levels of purines. Losing weight can also help to prevent gout, as can drinking more water throughout the day. In addition, some kinds of medication can increase the risk of gout, so ask your doctor if there are any medication changes that could be made to help prevent attacks.

Brian O’Driscoll and Fr. Peter McVerry to be awarded Freedom of the City

Brian O’Driscoll and Fr. Peter McVerry are to be awarded the Freedom of the City of Dublin. The Lord Mayor’s nomination of the two men was warmly welcomed by all Councillors and subsequently ratified by a Dublin City Council meeting. The award of Freedom of the City of Dublin acknowledges the contribution of recipients to the life of Ireland’s capital city. It also bestows honour on important visitors to Dublin. The Freedom of the City will be awarded to both men in early 2014. Brian O’Driscoll and Fr. Peter McVerry will join an illustrious list of Freemen and Freewomen including former US presidents John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, U2, Kevin Heffernan and Aung San Suu Kyi. Louis Le Broquy and Thomas Kinsella were the last people to be awarded the Freedom of the City of Dublin in 2007. Inspirational citizens

Lord Mayor of Dublin Oisín Quinn said “It is a great honour to be able to propose two of Dublin’s most inspirational citizens for our highest award, the Honorary Freedom of the City of Dublin. Brian and Fr. Peter are from different generations but they share much in common. They are both inspirational leaders. They set a remarkable example to us all by the

way they apply themselves to their challenges. They are people who lead by the example they set. In their own way and in their own fields, they are both individuals who walk the walk. "I am delighted they have agreed to accept this great honour and I know that all Dubliners will be both proud of, and find inspiration into the future from, these two remarkable men. They are and will continue to be great ambassadors for Dublin.” Personal challenges

Fr. Peter McVerry SJ has campaigned tirelessly for the rights of Dublin’s young homeless people for more than 40 years. The Peter McVerry Trust provides a wide range of services to young homeless people and Fr. McVerry has always used his voice to speak on their behalf. He approaches each individual he encounters with immense respect and works tirelessly to help them overcome the often immense personal challenges they face. Player and captain

Brian O’Driscoll is one of Ireland’s best ever rugby union players and has frequently been named as the top player in the world during his playing career. His achievements as player and captain for Leinster, Ireland and the British and Irish Lions

include Under 19 World Cup, League Cups, Heineken Cups, Triple Crowns and the historic Grand Slam in 2009. He is one of the most respected rugby players in the game today. Dublin City Council is proud to honour him as a player in the blue of Leinster and the green of Ireland. Ancient privileges

Amongst the ancient privileges afforded to a Freeman or Freewoman is the right to bring goods into Dublin through the city gates, without paying customs duties; the right to pasture sheep on common ground within the city boundaries; and the right to vote in municipal and parliamentary elections. Ancient Duties include: Each Freeman / Freewoman has to be ready to defend the city from attack. A Freeman / Freewoman can be called on to join a city militia at short notice. According to a law passed in 1454, any merchant who becomes a Freeman/Freewoman must possess the following: A coat of mail; A bow; A light helmet; A sword of his/her own. A law passed in 1465, states that each Freeman / Freewoman has to provide himself/herself with a longbow (of his own length) made of yew, witch-hazel or ash. He/she must also have twelve arrows made of the same wood.
