de Honduras, más de 200 años de historia
La comunidad negra o garífuna de Honduras cumple 212 años en este país centroamericano, al que llegaron en calidad de esclavos desde la isla de Guadalupe.
L
a comunidad negra o garífuna de Honduras cumplió este 12 de abril 212 años de su llegada a este país centroamericano, en calidad de esclavos, procedentes de la isla de Guadalupe. El balance de estos dos siglos “es positivo, aunque falta mucho trabajo que hacer todavía para seguir corrigiendo las condiciones de inequidad en que aún viven las comunidades garífunas y afro descendientes en general”, comentó el presidente de la Organización de Desarrollo Étnico Comunitario (ODECO), Celeo Álvarez. Los niveles de escolaridad primaria, secundaria y universitaria se han incrementado, lo mismo ocurre con la participación política, así como su presencia en diferentes Órganos del Estado, aunque esta participación sea incipiente y no proporcional, agregó. Álvarez considera que también hace falta decisión política para acompañar el desarrollo integral de las comunidades negras, que

viven a lo largo de la costa caribeña de Honduras que inicia en la frontera con Guatemala y termina en la línea divisoria con Nicaragua. Los pueblos garífunas necesitan de apoyo técnico y económico, que se les garantice la seguridad jurídica sobre sus tierras y territorios para vivir en armonía plena, subrayó Álvarez, uno de los principales líderes de la comunidad garífuna, que es rica en costumbres, tradiciones y cultura. Álvarez indicó que en la Administración que preside Manuel Zelaya, “no se ha titulado, ni saneado un solo centímetro de tierra perteneciente a las comunidades garífunas”. “Tampoco se ha dado apoyo sustancial para su desarrollo económico, hace falta mayor atención a la problemática de salud, incluyendo entre otras cosas el acceso a medicamentos y atención sanitaria para las personas afectadas e infectadas con el VIH/SIDA”, añadió. La vida en las comunidades negras de
Honduras tradicionalmente ha sido apacible, pero ahora se quejan por la falta de seguridad jurídica sobre sus tierras y territorios. La asistencia técnica y económica por la que claman las comunidades negras de este país es para impulsar su desarrollo integral a largo plazo, según diversos líderes comunitarios. Los garífunas lamentan la poca representación que tienen en los diferentes poderes del Estado, siendo más visible su ausencia en la Corte Suprema de Justicia, el cuerpo diplomático y en la mayoría de las secretarías de Estado que dependen del Poder Ejecutivo. Álvarez indicó que hacen falta políticas públicas para corregir las condiciones de desventaja comparativa en que viven las comunidades garífunas y afro descendientes en general. A esto se suman los problemas de salud, desempleo, subempleo y poco apoyo a la formación académica.

La ODECO surgió como respuesta a la necesidad de luchar por el respeto y disfrute de los derechos humanos, contribuir a la participación e impulsar el desarrollo integral de las comunidades y poblaciones afro hondureñas, explicó Celeo Álvarez, quien es el ideólogo y fundador de la organización. La institución fue fundada en 1992 y desde entonces es presidida por Álvarez, quien a finales del siglo pasado también fue dirigente del Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Medicina, Hospitales y Similares (SITRAMEDIHS). Como institución social, la ODECO cuenta con más de 2.000 afiliados y anualmente celebra una Asamblea General. Además, cada cuatro años elige a su Junta Directiva integrada por 15 miembros que pueden ser reelectos parcial o totalmente.

La llegada de Barack Obama a la presidencia de los Estados Unidos, para los garífunas de Honduras representa “un hecho sin precedentes que muestra la madurez del pueblo norteamericano”. La llegada de Obama a la Casa Blanca coincide con la candidatura presidencial del Partido Innovación y Unidad-Social Demócrata (PINU-SD) de Honduras, que para las elecciones generales de noviembre próximo ha escogido a Bernard Martínez, de raza negra. “El mensaje de Obama es de integración social, es el reconocimiento del contenido, del carácter y de las capacidades por encima del color de la piel y del origen Étnico racial”, enfatizó Álvarez. El presidente de la ODECO considera que el mensaje de Barack Obama es oportuno para América Latina, región que, aunque

cuenta con una población negra que supera el 30 por ciento, denota los mayores niveles de desigualdad y exclusión por motivos raciales, afectando principalmente a indígenas y afro descendientes. El candidato presidencial del PINU-SD, quien no tiene posibilidades de ganar el poder en Honduras por el bipartidismo de más de un siglo que ha marcado a este país, también representa una esperanza para los afro descendientes hondureños y quizá para todo el pueblo hondureño, en opinión de Álvarez. El dirigente garífuna expresó que ya “es tiempo de abrir las mentes y los corazones a nuevas corrientes y pensamientos que sean la respuesta anhelada para mejorar las condiciones socioeconómicas de la Honduras multiétnica y multicultural”. Las comunidades negras de Honduras se han destacado por su resistencia cultural, la unidad social a través de los tiempos, la lucha organizada y las pequeñas victorias que le dan sentido y esperanza a su existencia. Su música con tambores y caracoles; su comida a base de coco, pescado, plátano y yuca; sus danzas, y su destacada participación en otros campos como la medicina, la biología y el deporte, hacen de los garífunas una armonía cultural y social que pesa entre los hondureños. Aunque los garífunas se han extendido por todo el país, en la costa caribeña existen 53 comunidades distribuidas en los departamentos de Cortés, Atlántida, Colón, Gracias a Dios y el insular Islas de la Bahía. La población negra representa el 10 por ciento de los 7,3 millones de habitantes que tiene el país centroamericano. La mayor discriminación racial y la exclu-
sión se ve reflejada en diferentes aspectos: educación, salud, empleo, tierras y territorios, apoyo técnico y económico; participación política e imagen en los medios de comunicación. El deporte es donde más espacio han encontrado los afro descendientes hondureños, que en fútbol le han dado brillo a su país a través de los internacionales David Suazo y Edgar Álvarez, quienes juegan en Italia; Wilson Palacios y Maynor Figueroa, que lo hacen en Inglaterra, y Walter Martínez, en España, entre otros.

En la vida de los garífunas figura como símbolo de lucha, resistencia y unidad Joseph Satuyé, quien fue el máximo líder negro en la isla de San Vicente en los años de la conquista de los pueblos de América por los europeos. Satuyé, según apuntes históricos de los garífunas, murió combatiendo en San Vicente el 14 de marzo de 1795. Su pueblo capituló un año más tarde y 5.080 afro descendientes fueron expulsados y enviados hacia Honduras. Los expulsados llegaron a Punta Gorda, en el extremo norte de la isla de Roatán, Honduras, el 12 de abril de 1797. En honor a Satuyé, una estatua suya fue levantada en Punta Gorda a finales del siglo pasado. El 19 de marzo pasado los cinco candidatos a la presidencia de Honduras suscribieron un compromiso para respetar los derechos de los garífunas, que a ritmo de punta (su música tradicional), festejaron el 12 de abril su llegada a Honduras.

The balance of these two centuries “is positive, although there is still much work to be done to correct the conditions of inequity in which still the Garifunas live and also the African descendants in general”, commented the president of the Common Ethnic Organization of Development (ODECO), Celeo Álvarez. Álvarez considers that there is also lack of political decision to sponsor the integral development of the black communities that live along the Caribbean coast of Honduras, which starts at the border with Guatemala and ends at the dividing water line with Nicaragua. Garifuna towns need economic and technical support, that guaranty them legal security on their lands and territories to live in full harmony, underlined Álvarez, one of the main leaders of the community garífuna, that is rich in customs, traditions and culture. Alvarez indicated that the

ditionally has been peaceful, but now there are complaints about the lack of legal security regarding their lands and territories. The clamor of the black communities for economic and technical assistance is to impel their longterm integral development, according to diverse community leaders. The Garifunas regret the little representation they have in the different powers of the State, being more visible their absence in the Supreme Court of Justice, the diplomatic body and in the majority of the secretariats of state that depend on the Executive Power. Álvarez indicated that there is lack of public policies to correct the comparative conditions of disadvantage in which the communities Garifunas live and in general all African descendants. To this we can add health problems, unemployment, sub employment and little support to their academic formation. ODECO was created as an answer to the need to fight for the respect of human rights, to contribute with participation and to prompt the integral development of the Afro communities and populations of Honduran, explained Celeo Álvarez, who is the ideologist and founder of the organization. The institution was founded in 1992 and since then it has been presided by Álvarez, who at the end of last century was also director of the Union of Workers of Medicine, Hospitals and Similar (SITRAMEDIHS). As a social institution, the ODECO counts with more than 2.000 affiliates and annually celebrates a General Assembly. Besides, each four years they elect the Board of Directors integrated by 15 members that can be reelected partially or totally.

The arrival of Barack Obama to the presidency of the United States, for the Garifunas of Honduras represents “an unprecedented fact that shows the maturity of the American people”. The arrival of Obama to the White House coincides with the presidential candidacy of the Party Innovation and Unity Social Democrat (PINUSD) of Honduras that for the general elections next November has chosen Bernard Martinez, of black race. “The message of Obama is of social integration, is the recognition of the content, character and capacities over the color of the skin and of the ethnic origins,” emphasized Álvarez. The president of the ODECO considers that the message of Barack Obama is opportune for Latin America, region that, although counts with a black population that exceeds the 30 percent, denotes the greater levels of inequality and exclusion for racial motives, affecting mainly natives and the Afro descendants. The presidential candidate of the PINU-SD, who does not have possibilities of winning the power in Honduras by the bipartidism of more than one century that has marked this country, also represents a hope for the Hondurans of African descend and perhaps for all the Honduran people, is the opinion | www.vocerousa.com | Mayo/May 2009
of Álvarez. The garífuna leader expressed that already “it is time to open the minds and hearts to new currents and thoughts to be the answer longed for to improving the socioeconomic conditions of the multiethnic and multicultural of present Honduras. The black communities of Honduras have been outstanding by their cultural resistance, the social unity through the times, the organized battles and the small victories that give sense and hope to their existence. Their music with drums and acoustic sea shells; their rich coconut dishes, fish, plantain and yucca; their dances, and their noticeable participation in other fields as medicine, biology and sports, make of Garifunas a social and cultural harmony that weighs among the Hondurans.
The sports is where the Hondurans of African descend have found more freedom of action, that in soccer they have been pride of the country through the international players David Suazo and Edgar Álvarez, who play in Italy; Wilson Palacios and Maynor Figueroa, that play in England, and Walter Martinez, in Spain, among others.
Although the Garifunas have extended all over the country, on the Caribbean coast there are 53 communities distributed in the states of Cortez, Atlantida, Colon, Gracias a Dios and on the Islands of the Bay. The black population represents the 10 percent of the 7.3 million inhabitants of the Central American country. The biggest racial discrimination and exclusion are seen reflected in different aspects: education, health, employment, land and territories, economic and technical support; political participation and appearance in the means of communication.
SATUYÉ
In the life of the Garifunas, Jose Satuyé figures as symbol of fight, resistance and unity, who was the maximum black leader in the Island of San Vicente in the years of the conquest of the peoples of America by the Europeans. Satuyé, according to historic archives of the Garifunas, died fighting in San Vicente on March 14, 1795. His town surrendered a year later and 5.080 African descendants were expelled and exiled to Honduras. The exiled reached Punta Gorda, on the extreme
north of the Island of Roatan, Honduras, on April 12, 1797. In honor of Satuyé, his statue was raised in Punta Gorda at the end of the last century. On March 19, 2009 five candidates to the presidency of Honduras subscribed a commitment to respect the rights of the Garifunas, who at the rhythm of “punta” (their traditional music), celebrated April 12 their arrival to Honduras.

Hay más de 10.4 millones de madres solteras en los Estados Unidos solamente. El Día de la Madre fue fundado por Anna Jarvis en Estados Unidos como un día de sentimiento. No hay manera incorrecta de decirle a nuestra madre cuánto la apreciamos. Así que este año, yo quisiera demostrarlo a mi propio modo. Uno de la mejor manera de celebrar el Día de Madre es darle a su mami el día libre. Permitirle que pase el día tranquila, que descanse mientras el resto de la familia hace el trabajo. hough it is celebrated in different ways, on several dates throughout the year, nations around the world remember the mother, ma, mama, mommy, mata,mami,... madre. Even since the beginning of time, mothers have been a symbol of love and synonymous with the miracle of life. The celebration of motherhood dates back to the ancient Greeks honoring the mother of all goddesses, Rhea. Today, the average age at which a woman becomes a mom is 24. There are 10.4 million single moms in America alone. Anna Jarvis founded Mother’s Day in America as a day of sentiment. There’s no wrong way to tell mom how much she is appreciated, so this year, I would like to show it in my own way. One of the best way to celebrate Mother’s Day is to give your mom the day off. Let her take it easy and relax while the rest of the family does the work. Many families begin Mother’s Day with breakfast in bed. Usually Dad and the kids will let mama sleep late as they go into the kitchen and prepare her favorite

Mother’s Day is such a special occasion to highlight beautiful women who are doing a wonderful job with their children. They are pursuing careers, taking care of their home, children and themselves. These are our modern day heroes that show us every day
meal. A Mother’s Day breakfast can consist of anything your mom likes (frijoles, huevos, platanos, café y semitas… you get the point.) After the food is cooked arrange everything nicely on a tray. Don’t forget the vase with a single flower. Its springtime, so the children can (and usually do) pick flowers from outside. When everything is ready, carefully carry the tray and mom’s favorite magazine (Vocero), remote (so she can watch her novelas), or slippers. Cards and small presents from the children also can be placed on the tray before it is presented to mom in bed. Families will make reservations for a special Mother’s Day dinner or sit back and enjoy an unforgettable meal at home. It is a good day to let your mom relax and let her see what a wonderful family she has.Even though Mother’s Day is the second biggest giftgiving holiday in America, (estimating more than $14 billion a year), it doesn’t take money to make mom’s day special. In fact, most mothers would rather the gift be more personal, like a written (instead of purchased) card.
that it can be done. Graciously, serenely but firmly. We had a chance to interview Raquel and find out a little bit more about who she is. Raquel is a first generation Hispanic born in New Orleans with her dad from being from Guatemala and her mom from Nicaragua. The mixture of the two countries and such rich heritage has made Diaz the beautiful and strong woman she is today. She tells us, “I was 22 when

Raquel comparte con nosotros que sus padres han sido un gran apoyo desde que quedó embarazada con Justus. Ella dice, “afortunadamente he tenido a mis padres que nos han sostenido y ayudado en cada paso para que yo tuviera la oportunidad de regresar a mis estudios para mejorar mi vida y la de mi hijo”. Nosotros la preguntamos qué consejo podría darle a otras madres solteras. Contesto, “bien, es muy duro y si yo no hubiera tenido la ayuda de mi padres, honestamente no sé dónde estaríamos hoy. No obstante, es algo difícil porque no solamente tengo que contar con mis propios sentimientos, pero también con los de mi hijo. Honestamente yo no creo que hombres que salen con madres solteras entiendan el daño que se le hace al niño o niños cuando una relación falla. La única cosa que puedo decirle a las madres solteras es que tengan cuidado a quien le confían su propio corazón y el corazón de su hijo. ¿Qué lecciones ha aprendido? “Es una experiencia verdadera que no tiene fin. No hay nunca un momento aburrido. Observar a mi hijo crecer y hacerse un hombre joven ha sido bello. Continuamos aprendiendo las mismas lecciones que aprendimos cuando eramos niñas pero a través de los ojos de nuestros niños”. Raquel continúa, “Una lección que he aprendido es que debemos mantener nuestros niños tan niños como sea posible, no permitan

El futuro puede ser un poco incierto, pero ella explica, “mi futuro ahora parece mucho más claro ya que he sido aceptada en la Escuela de Enfermería de Charity. Ahora podré pararme en mis dos pies y mantener a mi hijo y mantenerme yo misma”. Para Raquel Díaz la luz al otro lado del túnel es más brillante cada día y le agradece a Dios que El la empuja dos pasos adelante y no dos para atrás. Antes de finalizar la entrevista, ella dice, “la última cosa que tengo que decirle a las madres solteras es póngase usted y su hijo primero, antes que decida empezar una nueva relación”. Díaz nos confesó que le gusta mirar las películas de héroes con su hijo y cocinar para toda su familia y amistades en su tiempo libre. Nos dice, “me encanta mirar los juegos de fútbol en vivo. Me fascina viajar y en mi corazón todo lo que deseo es tener mi propia familia y encontrar un hombre que me ame a mí y a mi hijo incondicionalmente”.

We ask her why she chose the name Justus for the six year old and she states “the name was chosen by the father (including the spelling). I choose to keep the same name and spelling when he left me at 3 months into my pregnancy because I believed that his name meant that it would be just him and me for the rest of our lives”. When Justus was baptized the priest told her that his name meant, “Dios está con nosotros”. His full name is Justus Emanuel. So therefore, that’s what it was, God is with us! Raquel shares with us that her parents have been supportive since the day she conceived her son. She says, “luckily I have had them to support us, so that I could have the opportunity to go back to school to better my life and the life of my son”. We ask her what advice she
would give other single moms. “Well, it is very hard and if I had not had the help of my family, honestly I don’t know where we would be! It still is very hard today, because you not only have to enable your feelings for just you, but also my son. Honestly I don’t believe that men that date single mothers understand the damage that is done to the child or children when a relationship fails. The only thing I can tell single mothers is be careful who you trust with your child’s heart and your own. Lessons learned? “It’s a true learning experience that never ends. There is never a dull moment watching my son grow into a young man. We continue to learn the same lessons we learned as a child but through the eyes of our children”. Raquel continues, “One lesson I have learned is keep your child young as long as possible don’t let them grow up before their time”. The future can be a little uncertain but she explains “my future now seems a lot clearer now that I have been accepted into Charity School of Nursing. I will be able to stand on my own and provide for me and my son”. For Raquel Diaz the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter everyday and she thanks God that He is pushing her forward and not two steps backward. Before we end, she says, “the last thing that I have to say to single moms is make you and your child first and foremost, before you decide you are ready for a relationship”. Diaz told us she enjoys watching super hero movies with her son and cooking for her large family and friends in her spare time. She tells us “I love to watch live soccer games, I love to travel and in my heart all I wish for is to have a family of my own and to have a man that loves me and my son unconditionally”.

Es la Directora General de La Fabulosa 830. Usted es una mujer muy ocupada. ¿Cómo coordina el trabajo y dos niños? “Uno tiene que darle el tiempo al trabajo hasta las 6 (o la hora que termina) y después cambiar el papel y ser mamá y nada más. He trabajado en este negocio por 6 años, y a medida que pasa el tiempo, he aprendido a manejar mi horario mucho mejor”. ¿Qué es uno de los aspectos más remuneradores de ser madre? “Soy una mamá soltera, así que el poder proveer por mis hijos sin verlos es una lucha. Yo tenía 22 años, muy joven, cuando tuve a mi primer hijo. Se aprende a apreciar cada momento, a medida que ellos van creciendo. La

hija es bailarina de ballet y zapateo. Jared juega fútbol, béisbol, y el fútbol bandera. Jared dice durante la entrevista, “ella no tiene la menor idea de lo que va a recibir para su día; es un secreto. He estado ahorrando para eso. ¿Qué desea usted para el Día de la Madre? Para el día de las madres quisiera hornear galletas. No gusta hacer eso. Ellos aprendieron a hornear muy temprano. También me encantaría poder descansar y hacer del día algo especial para todos nosotros. Ella da consejo a las madres, “agradecer por sus hijos y el tiempo que pasamos juntos!”

e interviewed a mother to ask about her thoughts on this special day. Yadira Hernandez of Puerto Rico is mother to Jared, 11 and Belen, 3. Yadira moved to New Orleans 7 yrs ago. She is now the General Manager of La Fabulosa 830. You’re a very busy woman. How do juggle work and two children? “You have to set a time where work ends, after six o clock I’m mom, and nothing else. I’ve been in this business for 6 years, and as time goes on, I learn how to manage my time better. What is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a mother? “I’m a single mom, so just being able to provide for my children without seeing them struggle. I was 22, a young mother when I had my first child. You learn how
to appreciate every moment, as they get older. The baby girl is a dancer, ballet and tap. Young Jared plays soccer, softball, and flag football. On Saturdays I’m the mom running back and forth from recitals to games, etc.” What lessons do you work to instill in your children? “I wanted to teach them about God, hard work, and family.” Jared says during her interview, “she has no idea what she’s getting for mothers day, it’s a secret. I’ve been saving up for it. “ What are you looking forward to for Mother’s Day? For mothers day I would like to bake cookies. We love to do that. They learned how to bake really early. Also I would like to just relax and make it a special day for all of us. She gives advice to mothers to be “thankful for your children and the time we have with them!”

ania Hidalgo ama sinceramente los niños. Se vino de La Ceiba, Honduras, a temprana edad. Trajo con ella sus fuertes características maternales heredades de su fallecida madre, Alicia. Aunque recientemente dio a luz a su primera hija, Vania ha ayudado a criar a 9 niños. La palabra “niñera” no le hace justicia. Durante su bachillerato prefería quedarse en la casa con sus sobrinas y sobrino, en lugar de salir con sus amigas, ir a juegos de fútbol... e incluso ir a la fiesta de prom. Vania dice, “amo ver a los niños crecer felices, un poquito consentidos y LIMPIOS. ¡Comencé enseñándole a Sofía como doblar la ropa y ahora ella limpia su cuarto, barre, y dobla la ropa de todos! Y ella todavía no empieza el kindergarten”. Vania Hidalgo tiene un temperamento de ángel; ella todavía envía juguetes, ropa, y otras necesidades a su amado país natal. Vania es un ejemplo que nos recuerda constantemente que las madres, de cualquier forma, pueden hacer cosas maravillosas en nuestras vidas. ania Hidalgo truly loves children. She moved from La Ceiba, Honduras early on in life. She brought with her strong, mother-like characteristics from her late mother, Alicia. Though she recently had her first child, Vania has helped raise over 9 children. The word “nanny” is an understatement. In high school, she preferred to stay at home with her nieces and nephew, over hanging out with friends, going to football games... and even her senior prom! Vania says, “I love to see kids grow up happy, a little spoiled, and CLEAN. I started showing Sophia how to fold clothes, now she cleans her room, sweeps, and folds everyone’s clothes! She’s not even in Pre-K”. Vania Hidalgo has an angel like temperament; she still sends toys, clothes, and other necessities to her beloved country. She is a constant reminder that mothers, in no matter what shape or form, can bring wonderful things to our lives. Vania is the wife of Jose Hidalgo, local radio on-air personality. He recently proposed to her LIVE from his daily radio show. Vania is shown here with, Sophia, the baby girl of four other children.

vidio Girón, cariñosamente lo llaman, Ovi’G, fue uno de los fundadores del conocido Grupo Rana de Guatemala. Tuve el placer de conocerlo a través de nuestro gran y mutuo amigo, Jorge Gómez, ex-vocalista de Wilfrido Vargas. Ambos se habían cruzado en conciertos a nivel internacional y esta servidora había tenido el placer de conocer a Gómez cuando estaba de gira con Vargas. Lo demás es historia. Ovi’G, ha sido un músico completo y mucho más. Cantante, arreglista, director musical y compositor, Girón contribuyó grandemente haciendo éxitos que se han escuchado por más de una década en Guatemala, Centroamérica, y en Estados Unidos no solo para el Grupo Rana, sino para muchos artistas más... Éxitos como Colombia Rock, Esa Chica (Tiny Winey) Mi Secretaria I y II, Socarengue, Socaribe entre otras, y su más reciente éxito “SOCA EN NEW ORLEANS” lo han mantenido en el corazón de sus seguidores a nivel nacional e internacional. Pero nos preguntamos y ¿cómo terminan tres de sus hijos en su banda y su esposa de manager? Es un asunto familiar. Familia prolífera y musical al máximo. Un día desesperado sin saber qué hacer para encontrar músicos dispuestos a seguir su agitada agenda, decide involucrar a sus hijos, Michelle, Suzette y al más pequeño, Ovidio Jr. que apenas tenía 10 añitos en ese entonces. Lili, su compañera y esposa file de años, ofrece manejarlos y acompañarlos en su nueva aventura. Allí, ese día, reunidos en su cálido hogar, deciden hacer un pacto de honor ante Dios, de llevar su música y mensaje de amor y alegría por todo el mundo. Y eso precisamente es lo que se encuentran haciendo justamente hoy. Ovi-G y sus Froggies, armados de una tenacidad contagiosa y una alegría desbordante, llenan los recintos de ritmos con un sonido nuevo y fresco para el gusto de todos. vidio Girón, known as, Ovi’G, was one of the founders of the Group Los Ranas of Guatemala. I had the pleasure to meet him through our famous mutual friend, Jorge Gomez, ex-vocalist of Wilfrido Vargas. Both had run into each other at different international concerts in different countries, and I had the pleasure to know Gomez when he was on tour with Vargas. The rest is history. Ovi’G, has been a consummate musician and more. Singer, producer, musical director and composer. Giron has contributed greatly with many of his successes that have been heard for ove decades in Guatemala, Central America and in the United States not only by the Group Los Ranas but he has composed and produced for many artists also. Successes such as Colombia Rock, That Girl (Tiny Winey) My Secretary I and II, Socarengue, Socaribe among others, and his more recent success “SOCA IN NEW ORLEANS” have kept him in the heart of his followers, at the national and international level. But we tend to ask ourselves how did this happen? To have his three children in the band and his wife as manager? It’s a family affair. It’s a prolific and musical family to the most. One day when he was desperate without knowing what else to do to find musicians willing to travel and keep up with his busy schedule, he decides to involve his children, Michelle, Suzette and the youngest, Ovidio Jr., barely 10 years old at the time. Lili, his companion and faithful wife of many years, offered to manage them and to accompany them in this new adventure. There, that day, all together in their cozy home they decided to make a pact of honor before God, to take their music and message of love and happiness throughout the world. And that is

precisely what they are doing today. Ovi’G and Los Froggies, armed with a contagious energy and a happy disposition, fill all places now with rhythms that are fresh and new, sounds from the world. The years of practice, persistence and tenacity have placed them today at professional level in the music world. From the Anglo-Saxon market to the Latin American market; from the Caribbean rhythms to the music of yesterday, including the beautiful sounds of the MARIMBA, an instrument that is part of all their presentations, make this band something extraordinary. The marimba is truly a spectacular instrument that gives new and different sounds to any presentation. It is the only band that uses this instrument in the city, when they start to play the typical sounds of the MARIMBA using this beautiful instrument, the crowd tends to go silent and is transported to other countries and other times. The Froggies - or Las Ranas as they are called in Spanish - have enriched all kinds of events playing in New Orleans, Alabama, Houma, Slidell, Hammond, Baton Rouge, Corpus Christi, Houston, Maryland, Delaware, Los Angeles, California, and tomorrow... from anywhere in the world.

ahalia Jackson, often called the greatest gospel singer, returned to her hometown to appear at the first New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April of 1970. While attending the Louisiana Heritage Fair in Congo Square (then known as Beauregard Square), she and Duke Ellington, who also appeared at the event, came upon the Eureka Brass Band leading a crowd of second-line revelers through the Festival grounds. George Wein, producer of the Festival, handed Ms. Jackson a microphone, she sang along with the band and joined the parade…and the spirit of Jazz Fest was born. This spontaneous, momentous scene—this meeting of jazz and heritage—has stood for decades since as a stirring symbol of the authenticity of the celebration that was destined to become a cultural force. From the very beginning, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival was envisioned as an important event that would have great cultural significance and popular appeal. The Festival was the culmination of years of discussions and efforts by city leaders who wanted to create an event worthy of the city’s legacy as the birthplace of jazz. A couple of other festivals were held in the years leading up to the first New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, but those events, different in format,
did not take hold as the Jazz & Heritage Festival would. In 1970, George Wein, jazz impresario behind the Newport Jazz Festival and the Newport Folk Festival (begun respectively in 1954 and 1959) was hired to design and produce a unique festival for New Orleans. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization, was established to oversee the Festival. Wein’s concept of the Louisiana Heritage Fair— a large daytime fair with multiple stages featuring a wide variety of indigenous music styles, food booths of Louisiana cuisine, and arts and crafts booths, along with an evening concert series—formed a construct that would prove vastly appealing and enduring. In addition to Mahalia Jackson and Duke Ellington, the first Festival lineup included Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, Clifton Chenier, Fats Domino, The Meters, The Preservation Hall Band, and parades every day with The Olympia Brass Band and Mardi Gras Indians, and many others. In 1970, only about 350 people attended the Festival, about half the number of musicians and other participants in the event. But the Festival, which became known as “Jazz Fest” almost immediately, was a great artistic success. When Jazz Fest was held the next year, it was clear that the event had
already outgrown Congo Square. For the 1972 Festival, the event moved to the infield of the Fair Grounds Race Course, the thirdoldest racetrack in America (open since 1872). Jazz Fest would grow quickly over the next few years, constantly expanding its use of the 145-acre site. In 1975, the Festival, still just a five-day event with only three days of the Louisiana Heritage Fair, had an anticipated attendance of 80,000. This was also the first year of the Festival’s popular, limited-edition silkscreen poster, now recognized as the most popular poster series in the world. From 1976 to 1978, Jazz Fest expanded to two full weekends of the Heritage Fair, and in 1979, for the 10th anniversary, the Festival scheduled three weekends, though one entire weekend was cancelled due to rain. In the 1980s, Jazz Fest continued to experience a tremendous growth in popularity and began to gain wide acclaim as one of the world’s greatest cultural celebrations. By the end of the decade, more than 300,000 people attended the Heritage Fair, evening concerts, and workshops. The 1989 Festival marked the 20th annual event, which was commemorated with a classic poster featuring Fats Domino, ushering in an era during which the posMayo/May 2009 | www.vocerousamagazine.com |

ter would celebrate many of Louisiana’s music legends with iconic portraits. The decade of the 1990s saw the appeal of Jazz Fest and the Festival’s significance as a cultural symbol soar. The New York Times would note that the Jazz Festival had “become inseparable from the culture it presents.” The Festival added features like the Thursday that kicks off the second weekend (1991); an International Pavilion that celebrates other cultures (Haiti, Mali, Panama, Brazil, Martinique, and in 2004, South Africa); and the Native American stage and area. In 2001, the Festival celebrated Louis Armstrong’s centennial, and the total attendance eclipsed 650,000, shattering records for virtually every day of the Heritage Fair, including the all-time single-day attendance record of 160,000. Wein’s prediction that New Orleans would become the first city of jazz festivals had clearly come true. The rest, well, it’s clearly history. One word can only describe this mega yearly event-success.

me va. Usted me lo puede quitar? Se tiene que tomar una radiografía para ver si es absceso (infección) de nervio o encía. Si es de el nervio se puede tratar con Endodoncia (tratamiento de canales / ‘Root canal’). Si es de encía necesita tratamiento periodontal de encía. Algunas veces se necesitan los 2 tratamientos. Si el diente esta flojo y tiene mucha perdida de hueso posiblemente se tenga que sacar. Con mucho gusto le puedo tomar a usted una radiografía para darle un diagnostico y mi recomendación. Esto es una emergencia que se tiene que atender pronto.
¿Qué es empujar la lengua? ¿Qué se puede hacer acerca de empujar la lengua y como resuelvo esto doctora? Por cierto mi lengua esta llena de rajaduras. Esto es malo? “Tongue thrusting” es otro habito que si es en exceso puede empujar los dientes de adelante fuera de lugar. Este habito también es grave y se puede resolver con unos frenillos especiales para controlar la posición de la lengua. Las rajaduras no son malas, pero tiene que mantener la lengua limpia con el ceplillo de diente para que no se le acumule bacteria en las rajaduras.
Tengo unas muelas en la parte de atrás de mis dientes arriba impactadas. Una amiga me dice que se llaman las muelas del juicio. Debo esperar Dra. Teresita a que me salgan solitas o me las debo sacar? La muelas de juicio normalmente salen a los 21 anos de edad. Si están impactadas lo mejor es que se la saquen. Cuando las muelas están impactadas es mejor que un Cirujano Dental se la saque. Algunas veces las muelas impactadas dañan las muelas de adelante, y también en algunos casos pueden salir quistes “Cysts” alrededor de la muela. También es necesario tomar una radiografía para darle un diagnóstico.

Debo de ir a verla o me espero a que se mejore? Lo mas pronto posible cuando se le sanen los labios y pueda abrir la boca debe de venir para tomarle una radiografía de la encía. Si se están poniendo gris es una indicación que se daño el nervio (absceso/ infección) y necesite endodoncia. También se deben de estabilizar los dientes con un alambre, si están flojos, por unos cuantos meses. Usted también, tiene una emergencia que se debe de atender lo mas pronto posible. Dra. Hernández, desde pequeña tengo los dientes como no lisos. Tienen como ranuritas y veo en las revistas que las modelos los tienen lisos y perfectos. Usted me los puede emparejar y enderezar? Este proceso necesita de anestesia? Le tengo terror a la anestesia pero si me gustaría arreglármelos. Es posible que se le pueda resolver con ‘bonding’ o resina. Si las ranuritas no son muy profundas no se necesita anestesia.

La menopausia es sólo una de las tantas etapas en la vida reproductora de la mujer. La transición completa de la menopausia se divide en etapas definidas conocidas como menopausia prematura, peri menopausia, y menopausia.
a menopausia prematura es la menopausia que ocurre antes de los 40 años,o ya se haya presentado naturalmente o ha inducida por medios médicos o quirúrgicos. Las mujeres que entran en menopausia prematura tienen síntomas semejantes a ésos de la menopausia natural, como momentos de bochorno, problemas emocionales, sequedad de la vagina, y disminución de los deseos sexuales. Sin embargo, para algunas mujeres con la menopausia prematura, estos síntomas son severos. También, las mujeres que tienen la menopausia prematura tienden a que los huesos se debiliten más rápidamente que las mujeres que entran la menopausia a mayor edad. Esto presenta más posibilidad de desarrollar osteoporosis, poniéndolas en riesgo de fracturas de huesos. Peri menopausia marca el tiempo cuando su cuerpo comienza su cambio a la menopausia. Esto incluye los años que se acercan a la menopausia - lo que puede ser por lo menos 2 a 8 años- desde el primer año después del último período. No hay manera de predecir cuánto durará esta etapa. Es algo natural en la vida de las mujeres que señala el fin de sus años reproductores. Esta etapa de peri menopausia causa algunos cambios en su cuerpo que no se pueden notar por lo general. Menopause is only one of several stages in the reproductive life of a woman. The entire menopause transition is divided into distinct stages known as premature menopause, perimenopause, and menopause
remature menopause is menopause that occurs before the age of 40, whether it is natural or induced by medical or surgical means. Women who enter menopause early have symptoms similar to those of natural menopause, like hot flashes, emotional problems, vaginal dryness, and decreased sex drive. However, for some women with premature menopause, these symptoms are severe. Also, women who have premature menopause tend to get weaker bones faster than women who enter menopause later in life. This raises their chances of developing osteoporosis, putting them at risk of fractures of their bones. Perimenopause marks the time when your body begins its move into menopause. It includes the years leading up to menopause—anywhere from
2 to 8 years—plus the first year after your final period. There is no way to predict how long perimenopause will last or how long it will take you to go through it. It’s a natural part of a woman’s life that signals the ending of her reproductive years. Perimenopause causes some changes in your body that may not be noticeable. For most women, the discomforts associated with perimenopause are minimal and manageable. Other discomforts you might experience include: Changes in your menstrual cycle, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, sleep problems, mood changes, pain during sex, urinary infections, urinary incontinence, less interest in sex, increase in body fat around your waist, and problems with concentration and memory. By monitoring your menstrual cycle and recording
your signs and symptoms for several months, you’ll gain a better understanding of the changes occurring during this time. You will also have valuable information to discuss with your doctor. Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) are often the treatment of choice to relieve perimenopausal symptoms—even if you don’t need them for birth control. Today’s low-dose pills regulate periods and eliminate or reduce hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and premenstrual syndrome. n su día fueron sonados los procesos de divorcios de los brasileños Romario (Mónica Santoro) y Ronaldo (Milene Domínguez), del argentino Diego Armando Maradona (Claudia Villafañe), del mexicano Rafael Márquez (Adriana Lavat), sin olvidar al francés Thierry Henry (Claire Merry) y el alemán Oliver Khan (Simone). Todos ellos grandes futbolistas con un denominador añadido: su problemas matrimoniales, que les han llevado a convivir en el “club de los divorciados” del fútbol. The Mexican artist has said, ” I have been battling against Lyme Disease, a terrible illness that comes when it wants and is extremely deteriorating and painful. I am in the middle of a battle against it. I have faith and I pray that at the end of this year I will be strong enough to continue with my regular routine. That is why I am taking care of myself to recover as soon as possible and to get rid of this unfortunate and unexpected illness. I am in discussions with a new label and I have been working hard on new songs with different composers, developing a new concept of which I’m really excited about. I am anxiously awaiting to start recording in the fall. No doubt it is going to be a very different and emotional project for me. Remember that you’re always in my heart.

l galán peruano Christian Meier dejará de actuar en telenovelas para tener más tiempo libre y dedicarse a la producción de series de ficción con proyección internacional, informó hoy la prensa en Lima. El artista de 38 años, conocido por actuar en varios melodramas latinoamericanos y películas, declaró en una entrevista con el diario El Comercio que quiere “comprometerse con proyectos más cortos que le permitan compartir más tiempo con los que ama”. “Nunca antes había tenido tan poco tiempo para vivir; esta telenovela es el trabajo más extenuante que he hecho en mi vida”, aseguró el protagonista del culebrón “Doña Bárbara” grabado en Colombia. Según Meier, “ha aprendido y se ha divertido” con este tipo de producciones, pero les ha dedicado “mucho tiempo”. he Peruvian hotty, Christian Meier will stop acting in soap operas to have more free time and to dedicate himself to the production of fiction series with international projection, informed today the press of Lima, Peru. The 38-year-old actor, known by his roles in various Latin-American melodramas and movies, declared in an interview with the newspaper The Commerce that he wants “to be engaged in shorter projects that will allow him to share more time with the ones he loves”. “Never before I had had so little time in my life; acting in soap opera is the most exhausting work that I have ever done”, assured the leading actor of the sexy novela, “Doña Bárbara” that was taped in Colombia. According to Meier, “I have learned and have had a great time” with this type of productions, but has dedicated to them “a great deal of time”. After ten uninterrupted months working in the above-mentioned soap opera, the actor emphasized that his priority now is to take vacations with his girlfriend, who also acts in the
melodrama, the Venezuelan Genesis Rodríguez, daugheter of famous singer, El Puma. Meier wants to rest and to travel with her in Peru and other countries as of May 1st. e encanta el color rosado. Siempre me ha gustado. Las flores rosadas. Los dulces y postres rosados. Los diamantes rosados. Las puestas del sol rosado. Color suave, bello, sofisticado. El color rosado puede sinceramente cubrir la gama de emociones. Puede llenarnos de luz con ciertos tonos, o hacernos sentir calmados y en paz con otros tonos, y emocionarnos con otro matiz. Es el equilibrio de rojo y blanco. Mientras el blanco a menudo puede ser un poquito severo, el rosado del sonrojo es apenas apropiado. El color rojo es el color obvio cuando se busca dar la impresión de “caliente”. Pero el magenta es inesperado, más fresco, y menos obvio. El color rosa nos afecta como nos sentimos. Si usted no me cree, alce un bebé recién nacido envuelto en una manta suave de color rosado y observe cómo se siente. love the color pink. Always have. Pink flowers. Pink cupcakes. Pink diamonds. Pink sunsets. Sweet, pretty, sophisticated. Pink is one color that can truly run the gamut as far as the emotions it can evoke from someone…it can be calming and peaceful in one hue and exciting and glamorous in another. It is the balance of red and white. While white can often make things just a tad too stark, a blush pink is just right. The color red is the obvious go to color when in search of something “hot”. But, magenta is unexpected, cooler, and less obvious. Pink changes the way you feel. If you don’t believe me, hold a newborn baby wrapped up in a soft, fluffy, pink blanket and see how you feel. For a different kind of pink feeling, walk into a party wearing a hot pink dress and see if you don’t shake things up a little bit. Next time you’re having one of those I-feel-so-yuck days, throw on a pink shirt and I promise you someone will tell you how pretty you look today. As a designer, using pink in the home has always been a challenge. A lot of people are afraid of pink. It’s too girly. Reminds me of my mother’s 70’s lipstick. Only in my daughter’s room…I’ve heard it all. But, the fact is pink is a fantastic color to decorate your home with. It’s more flattering than white, it’s chic; it works well with other colors and works with any style of décor. Most importantly, it makes you feel good! If you’ve always wanted to incorporate pink into your home, but still aren’t ready to take the plunge so far as to paint a whole room, start little by little. A lamp, a pillow, a wallpapered shelf… Dashes of pink hues here and there is wonderful! Pink and chocolate brown is divine. Pink and celery green is fresh and young. Paired with black or white is elegant. My personal favorite is a modern, fun palette of pink with scarlet red and turquoise. The combinations are endless, really. Here are a few ideas to get those creative juices flowing! Be adventurous, add some color, have some fun. When you’re done, kick up your heels, sip on a pink lemonade and savor the moment. l día sábado 11 de Abril en el Rivertown Center se llevó acabo la presentación de todas las participantes a la elección de Srta. Hispanidad 2009, con la participación de las candidatas de todos los países centroamericanos, México y Cuba, Colombia. El jurado tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar personalmente a cada una de las candidatas y posteriormente, desfilaron y cada una hizo una presentación del país al cual representan. Los jueces tomaron nota para hacer sus evaluaciones y elegir la nueva Srta. Hispanidad 2009, evento que se llevará acabo el día 16 de Mayo. En la presentación de las candidatas, resaltaron las representates de Honduras, Colombia, Cuba y Nicaragua, los jueces tendrán una dificil tarea, pues todas las participantes tienen muchas cualidades.

RECIPES/RECETAS For Mother’s Day Hot Guacamole yield: Makes about 3 1/2 cups active time: 30 minutes total time: 30 minutes ingredients: • 6 oz tomatillos (6 or 7), husked and rinsed • 1/2 small red onion, finely chopped • 3 to 4 fresh serrano chiles, seeded (optional) and finely chopped • 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 2 large California avocados (1 lb total)

preparation: Preheat broiler. Broil tomatillos in a flameproof shallow baking pan about 4 inches from heat until tops are charred, 7 to 10 minutes. Turn tomatillos over with tongs and broil until charred, about 5 minutes more. Combine onion, chiles, cilantro, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Add tomatillos 2 at a time, mashing with a fork or pestle to form a coarse paste. Pit and peel avocados. Add avocados to mixture and continue mashing until incorporated but still chunky. Cooks’ notes Seed about half of chiles for moderately spicy guacamole, all of them for mild. Guacamole may be made 8 hours ahead and chilled, covered. Bring to room temperature before serving.
Queso Fundido with Chiles and Pork ingredients: • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 large poblano chile (about 4 ounces), seeded, cut into small strips • Cut Pork squares • 1 teaspoon minced garlic • 10 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, grated (about 2 1/2 cups) • 2 green onions, thinly sliced • 2 teaspoons chopped red or green jalapeno chile • Corn tortilla chips preparation: Heat oil in medium cast-iron skillet over low heat. Add poblano chili, pork and garlic and saute until chili begins to soften, about 8 minutes. Increase heat to medium. Season with salt and pepper. (Can be made 6 hours ahead. Cover; chill. Re-warm over medium heat before continuing.) Prepare barbecue (medium-low heat). Transfer cast-iron skillet to barbecue rack. Add cheese to hot mixture. Stir until cheese melts and mixture begins to bubble, about 4 minutes. Sprinkle green onions and jalapeno chili over. Serve immediately with corn chips.

Ingredients:
• 2 cups of Margarita Mix • 1 cup of Tequila • ½ cup of Cointreau • Juice of 2 limes • 3 balls of lemon or lime sorbet • 1 cup of ice preparation: Mix all ingredients in blender at medium speed, wet the rim of the Margarita glass with lime juice and rotate rim over salt on a plate to cover the rim’s glass with salt.
