Deer Park is located on Melbourne’s western fringe. The Western Highway bicsects the suburb, with more established residential areas in the north, and new estates further south. The population is dominated by older families in detached dwellings. The population peaked at some 13,000 persons in 2001, but declined sharply between 2001 and 2006 by 7%.
