When Alessandro and Caterina Biachi visited South Africa while on honeymoon in 2014, the Karoo was on their bucket list of local destinations. ‘We promptly fell in love with the scenery, which was the complete opposite of our hometown of Lecce, Italy,’ says Alessandro. While Alessandro grew up in the family’s restaurant business before moving into law, this semi-desert area

of the Western Cape was a draw for the couple to move into farming. ‘We are situated 30km from Laingsburg along the R323 southbound towards Floriskraal Dam,’ says Alessandro. ‘The beauty in this long valley is a little unconventional, but no less breathtaking and impressive. It’s in a fairly arid area, littered with fleshy succulents and dwarf baobab trees.’

But the dry, harsh conditions of the Karoo are actually ideal for producing excellent wines. ‘Our range includes many wonderful dessert and fortified wines,’ says Alessandro. The property is also a haven for holiday enthusiasts, with Alessandro encouraging visitors to come and experience it. After all, this is a story of hope, endurance and persistence in the arid Klein Karoo.

Ours is a haven for holiday enthusiasts: experience it
