Mandatory Fire Prevention Signs The Building Regulations 2000 Approved Document B recommends that doors designed as fire-resisting doors should be marked with the appropriate mandatory fire safety sign with reference given to BS 5499:2002 as the guidance document for design format, colour and text. As a guide, the recommended fixing height for door fitted signs is 1500mm above floor level. See page 3 for more details.

Sign size coding is made up in most cases of 2 letters. The first letter indicates the length, the second indicates the height. For example, if the sign size is RG, the sign will be 600mm length x 200mm height. Here is a complete list of letters with corresponding sizes.
