When journalism is silenced, literature must speak. Because while journalism speaks with facts, literature speaks with truth. Seno Gumira Ajidarma - gast Read My World 2015 Read My World richt zich dit jaar op de regio Zuidoost-Azië. Hier, in Amsterdam, komen denkers, dichters en singer-songwriters samen om elkaar in vrijheid te ontmoeten en met u, het publiek, en meer dan 90 Nederlandse collega-auteurs een confronterend, verhalend, historisch festival te maken. Indonesië vierde in augustus haar 70-jarige onafhankelijkheid van Nederland, Singapore vierde haar 50-jarig jubileum en Maleisië (onafhankelijk van de Britten sinds 1957) heeft weinig te vieren momenteel: de vrijheid van bijzondere gasten die wij uit deze regio’s ontvangen staat ernstig onder druk. De aanwezigheid van onze internationale gasten en de thema’s die zij durven aan te snijden, werpt ook een nieuw licht op onze eigen Nederlandse actualiteit: Wie zijn wij als we de pijnlijke discussie uit de weg blijven gaan over de manier waarop veel van onze welvaart werd vergaard in de koloniën? Als de kinderen van die koloniën nog altijd met verzwegen familieverhalen rondlopen? Als we de wereld kunnen rondreizen met een Nederlands paspoort, maar intussen de grenzen sluiten voor iedereen die mee wil delen in deze welvaart? Hier gaat Read My World over: vier dagen lang doen we alsof grenzen niet bestaan. We spreken over het verleden, het heden en de toekomst. Read My World werkt elk jaar met lokale curatoren en samenstellers; dit jaar zijn schrijfster Bernice Chauly (Maleisië) en blogger/vertaler Kadek Krishna Adidharma (Indonesië) uitgenodigd om het programma samen te stellen. A N H S I R K K E KAD HARMA ADID We Are to Blame The Indonesian writers I chose represent a broadening historical awareness. Their protagonists do not fight clear and easy enemies. Obviously, there is no colonizing power or dictator anymore. While the magic of innocence and the earth still imbues their writing, their protagonists do not succumb to or rely on the grace of unseen forces. Fresh perspectives are offered to address the cyclical nature of current events. Why must we suffer regular bloodletting on our streets every decade? What emerges is a sense of social and personal culpability: I am to blame. We are to blame, for burying wounds deep in taboo and allowing this to continue. After seventy years, the Republic of Indonesia remembers the euphoria of independence with melancholy and nostalgia. We have had so many causes to fight for, and yes, the occasional hero to pin our hopes on. We have endured so many disappointments. Time and again, we labour to rebuild trust in State institutions that had failed us stupendously: almost beyond belief or rationale. Writers are aware, watching. Yet strength need not come from numbers. There is power in truth-telling. Not only to heal, but also to solidify the foundations of our shaky beginnings. Kadek Krishna Adidharma - curator Indonesia

Ask Yourself: Where Do I Stand? Malaysia is a country that is in a state of crisis, with an uncertain future. Freedom of expression is not a right and artists have to struggle to make art, write and be heard. If art is to be truthful, it has to be brave, honest â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a responsibility. Censorship has made us resilient, resourceful, stronger. There are many challenges that come from regimes that suppress dissenting voices, and our writers are writing in ways like never before. There is a greater readership, there is a hunger for the word, there is a need for it. This is a time where art is necessary, where art has to be what art is. To inform, to provoke, to comment. Malaysian and Singaporean artists are compelled to create, and yes, this is the best time to be a writer, a painter, a poet, a singer. This is what we must do - be brave, record, show the world, and ourselves, who we really are. That we are conscious of the things we write and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t write about, and of the choices that go into making that decision. The need to always ask: Where do I stand? Will I speak, or will I be silent? We need to confront ourselves, to make our art work for us, to force us to face our fears, to make us into artists who know our past and our present, and who are working towards a better future. Programma’s die je als bezoeker misschien niet meteen verwacht had, maar die een festival juist zijn speciale kleur geven. Dit zijn onze tips voor de eigenzinnige toehoorder. In What Comes From Afar storten Amsterdamse scholieren zich met hart en ziel in het werk van ver-van-hun-bed-auteurs. De gesprekken die ontstaan, dwingen auteurs én scholieren voorbij hun eigen wereld te kijken. De redenen waarom je in detentie belandt, verschillen enorm per regio in de wereld, maar de ervaring van vrijheidsverlies is universeel. In Gevangenismonologen hebben twee ex-gedetineerden hun verhaal laten optekenen en worden hun rauwe verhalen vermengd met poëzie. De dood zal ons altijd met onuitgesproken zinnen achterlaten. In Beyond Death wordt fictie ingezet om de onverbiddelijkheid van het totale uitdoven voor te zijn.

S E M O C WHAT AFAR FROM Inspireren en reageren In What Comes from Afar interviewen jongeren van verschillende Amsterdamse scholen Dyah Merta (Indonesië). Ze stellen uiteenlopende vragen over haar werk en de omstandigheden waaronder ze publiceert. De scholieren lieten zich ook door Dyah Merta inspireren en reageren met zelfgeschreven poëzie op thema’s uit haar werk.

Inspire and react In What Comes from Afar, pupils from various schools in Amsterdam will interview Dyah Merta (Indonesië). They will ask a variety of questions about her work and the circumstances in which she publishes. The pupils were inspired by Dyah Merta, and various themes from her work, to respond by writing poems of their own.

ON THE MOVE Mobiliteit in een begrensde wereld Schrijvers verplaatsen zich graag en veel: soms uit noodzaak, soms uit verlangen naar een nieuwe wereld. Ook diverse gasten van Read My World leven niet in het land waar hun wortels liggen. Welke gevolgen brengt dit met zich mee? En wat betekent deze verplaatsing voor hun werk? Een gesprek over vrijheid en verantwoordelijkheid.

Mobility in a restricted world Writers relocate eagerly and frequently: sometimes from necessity, sometimes from a desire for new worlds. The same goes for Read My World’s various international guests who don’t live in their native country. What consequences does that imply? And what does the move mean for their work? A discussion about freedom and responsibility.

WHAT’S IN A NAME Hetzelfde verhaal vanuit twee werelden Elle van Rijn schreef in haar roman Mijn naam is Nadra over het leven van de Nederlandse Berta Hertogh, die in 1942 werd geadopteerd door een Maleisische vrouw. Bernice Chauly (Maleisië) en Farish A. Noor (Maleisië) groeiden op met verhalen over hetzelfde meisje, maar dan verteld vanuit een ander perspectief. Zij leerden haar kennen als Nadra, een Maleisisch meisje dat werd ontvoerd door de Nederlandse staat. Chauly, Noor en Van Rijn gaan samen met televisiepresentator Rocky Tuhuteru in op dit bijzondere verhaal.

One story, two worlds In her novel Mijn naam is Nadra (My name is Nadra), Elle van Rijn wrote about the life of the Dutch Berta Hertogh who was adopted by a Malaysian woman in 1942. Bernice Chauly and Farish A. Noor, both from Malaysia, grew up with stories about the same girl, but from a different perspective. They knew her as Nadra, the Malaysian girl who was abducted by the Dutch government. Chauly, Noor and Van Rijn take a closer look at this remarkable story with television presenter Rocky Tuhuteru.

Schrijvers kijken voorbij de dood Stel je voor dat je dood bent. Wat had je nog moeten zeggen en tegen wie? Met deze vraag gaan vier auteurs aan de slag. Ellen Heijmerikx, Kira Wuck, Alfred Birney en Seno Gumira Ajidarma (Verenigde Staten/Indonesië) schreven een monoloog vanuit het perspectief van een al dan niet fictief personage dat nadenkt over wat er nog gezegd had moeten worden. Een opdracht die het vervreemdend perspectief viert en voorbij de dood kijkt.

Writers look beyond death Imagine you’re dead. What should you have said and to who? Four authors take on the challenge of this question. They each created a monologue from the perspective of a character, fictitious or otherwise, who contemplates what should have been said. An assignment that celebrates a disconcerting perspective and looks beyond death.

Meet the authors: Tash Aw (19.00 – 20.00) In gesprek met Tash Aw over zijn roman Five Star Billionaire, een mozaïekverhaal over vier Maleisiërs die een bestaan willen opbouwen in de metropool Shanghai. Het boek stond op de longlist van de Man Booker Prize 2013.

Meet the authors: Ricardo Domeneck (20.00 – 21.00) Verlangens naar de lichamen van zijn geliefden, het plezier van de taal en naar Brazilië, een land in opstand dat dichter Ricardo Domeneck opnieuw wil opbouwen. Domeneck, een van de nieuwe stemmen in de Braziliaanse poëzie, draagt voor uit zijn nieuwe dichtbundel Het verzamelde lichaam. Moderator: Frank Keizer.

Multatuli kent iedereen, maar wie heeft van Victor Ido gehoord? Alfred Birney laat in zijn essay De dubieuzen de onderbelichte kanten zien van de NederlandsIndische literatuur. Programmamaker en onderzoeker Lisanne Snelders gaat met hem in gesprek over beeldvorming, gemengde afkomst en mooischrijverij.

A talk with Tash Aw about his novel Five Star Billionaire, a patchwork of stories about four Malaysians who are looking to build a life for themselves in the metropolis Shanghai. The book was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2013.

Meet the authors: Ricardo Domeneck (20:00 - 21:00) Desires for the bodies of his loved ones, for his pleasure for the language and for Brazil, a land in turmoil that poet Ricardo Domeneck wants to rebuild. Domeneck, one of the new voices in Brazilian poetry, will recite from his new poetry collection The Collected Body.

Meet the authors: Dyah Merta (21:00 - 22:00) In her stories, Dyah Merta evokes the beauty of Java, but also speaks of the price that progress is having on the island. Merta will recite from her own work.

Questionable history (22:00 - 23:00) Everyone in the Netherlands knows Multatuli, but who has ever heard of Victor Ido? In his essay, The questionables, Alfred Birney shows some hitherto neglected sides of Dutch East Indies literature. Programme maker and researcher Lisanne Snelders talks to him about public perception, mixed descent and glossing over.

Untuk Selalu Untuk Selalu is a short documentary chronicling the ritualistic differences between four groups of immigrants of Indonesian descent; the Moluccans, the Dutch-Indos, the Javanese-Surinamese and the ethnic Indonesians. The film shows cultural differences and similarities of these groups with the same roots, seen through the eyes of youngsters of the same generation.

A poetry marathon In a relentless cadence, thirty poets will each recite three poems; two by their own hand and one by a poet from abroad. Madcaps and mumblers, abstracts and anecdotes, juveniles and geriatrics: they follow each other in quick succession and demonstrate in two and a half hours how exciting, sophisticated, varied, and above all, how readable and listenable poetry really is.

WHA AFART COMES FROM Inspireren en reageren In What Comes from Afar interviewen jongeren van verschillende Amsterdamse scholen The Venopian Solitude (Maleisië). Ze stellen uiteenlopende vragen over haar werk en de omstandigheden waaronder ze publiceert. De scholieren lieten zich ook door The Venopian Solitude inspireren en reageren met zelfgeschreven poëzie op thema’s uit haar werk.

Inspire and react In What Comes from Afar, pupils from various schools in Amsterdam will interview The Venopian Solitude (Malaysia). They will ask a variety of questions about her work and the circumstances in which she publishes. The pupils were inspired by The Venopian Solitude, and various themes from her work, to respond by writing poems of their own.

S E O R E OUR H Elk land heeft zijn literaire helden Elk land heeft zijn literaire helden: ze vertellen het verhaal van een land en zetten zo een land op de kaart. Multatuli’s Max Havelaar wordt vaak aangehaald als hét boek dat het begin van het einde van het Nederlands kolonialisme in Indonesië inluidde. Kartini was een Javaanse prinses die schreef over de onderdrukte positie van de vrouw in Indië. Multatuli en Kartini worden door Gustaaf Peek en Dyah Merta (Indonesië) gelezen en met elkaar vergeleken.

Each country has its literary heroes Each country has its literary heroes: by relating the story of a country, these heroes put it on the map. Multatuli’s Max Havelaar is often cited as the book that marked the beginning of the end of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia. Kartini was a Javan princess who wrote about the repressed position of women in Dutch East India. Multatuli and Kartini will be read by Gustaaf Peek and Dyah Merta (Indonesia) and compared with each other.

Muzikale ‘piekeransen’ Dat woordje ‘terug’ is een korte muzikale voorstelling over het werk van Tjalie Robinson. Schrijver Renée van Marissing en muzikant/componist Sjoerd de Roij baseren zich op Robinsons ‘piekeransen’ en laten zich inspireren door de kritische blik, het poëtische taalgebruik en de ogenschijnlijk luchtige observaties van deze schrijver en journalist, wiens thuis ‘erg ver’ was. Bewonderaar en kenner Marion Bloem geeft een korte inleiding.

Musical ponderations That word ‘back’ is a show about Tjalie Robinson’s work. Author Renée van Marissing and musician/composer Sjoerd de Roij take Robinson’s ‘piekeransen’ (ponderations) as their starting point, inspired by the critical eye, poetical language and the seemingly lighthearted observations of this author whose home was ‘very far’. Sporen van een persoonlijk verleden In de romans over zijn jeugd, Nathan Sid (1983), Indische Duinen (1994) en Familieziek (2002), gaat Adriaan van Dis uitgebreid in op zijn Indische achtergrond. Uit zijn werk en uit interviews komt naar voren dat hij deze achtergrond als traumatisch heeft ervaren en nooit echt heeft kunnen aarden in een gezin waarbinnen de heftige oorlogservaringen voor veel spanningen zorgden. Chris Keulemans gaat hierover met hem in gesprek.

Traces of a personal past ???

In the novels about his childhood, Nathan Sid (1983), Indische Duinen (1994) and Familieziek (2002), Adriaan van Dis delves deeply into his Indonesian background. As his work and the interviews with him show, this background was traumatic for him and he never felt completely at home in a family where the dreadful experiences of war created frequent tension. Film viewing: ‘No False Echoes’ by Wendelien van Oldenborgh (20:00 - 21:00) How can you, as a citizen, let your voice be heard? No False Echoes by artist Wendelien van Oldenborgh is a stream-of-consciousness film that addresses the question of how open or closed the current public debate is in the Netherlands and modern-day Indonesia over the former Dutch East-Indies. Festival curator Kadek Krishna Adidharma will respond afterwards in a talk that will be led by Chris Keulemans.

LITERAIRE VUURPOTPOURRI Vertellend en zingend de nacht in Zaterdagavond worden er vuren ontstoken in de mooiste tuin van Amsterdam. Muzikanten en verhalenvertellers nemen rond die vuren plaats om zingend en vertellend de nacht in te luiden. Schuif aan en je vindt hier bijvoorbeeld theatermaker en schrijver Ogutu Muraya met zijn even komische als indringende en even persoonlijke als maatschappijkritische verhalen. Marijn Visser bouwt zijn verhalen op uit ervaringen in zijn persoonlijke leven. Sahand Sahebdivani sleurt met zijn vertelkracht iedereen zijn rijke verbeelding in. Violist Dolan Jones en zijn trawanten brengen je dansend de nacht in met opzwepende klezmer. Herald the night with songs and stories On Saturday night, braziers will be lit in Amsterdam’s most beautiful garden and musicians and storytellers will take their places to herald the night with their songs and stories. Around the fire you can expect for instance writer, theatre maker and storyteller Ogutu Muraya with his stories that are as comical as they are probing, and as personal as they are sociocritical. Marijn Visser draws inspiration from his own life and everything around him for his storytelling. Sahand Sahebdivani’s remarkable narrative skill pulls everyone into his vivid imagination with ease. Violinist Dolan Jones and his companions will also join in and make their compelling klezmer sound. A perfect programme to wander round the garden and to gaze into the fire, while swept to all corners of language, sound and world.
