bombardment of a hapless prefect being ambushed in the lecture theatre. Bringing in a prefect or staff member to drive real change on the topic has given us access to decision makers every session. And the results are in. This year, we have achieved: setting up subject prefects, restarting this paper and over three sessions, making our views on Phone Free Friday… abundantly clear.
Some might say that this isn’t a great return for thirty minutes a week. I beg to differ – we no longer live in fear of touching the door handles. We still have far to go, but before you moan that whoever proposed Phone Free Friday didn’t ask you, remember change is much easier when you’re on the inside.
If you think the purpose of student council is to seize control, you’re wrong. What it can do is bridge the gap between students and those making the decisions that affect us. I think that’s a good deal for my Tuesday break-time. If you do too, find your councillor, or join us in Room 3.
