During the past few months, I’ve become an avid listener of poetry podcasts – or, I should say, the avid listener of one poetry podcast. “Poetry Off the Shelf, a weekly discussion about modern poetry hosted by Curtis Fox (who, in my opinion, possesses one of most soothing and genuinely kind voices ever recorded) has quickly become my constant companion. I revealed my newfound obsession to managing editor Sean Neumann the other day and he was rather appalled by my geeky tendencies – so if you’re having a similar reaction, you’re in good company, but hear me out! This daily dosage of poetry and literary discussion hasn’t substantially altered my usual routine. I’ve always walked to and from class wearing headphones; recently, however, I’ve replaced songs by Alex G with recordings of Mark Strand and Amiri Baraka. Earlier today, I played a few readings by Louise Gluck while I folded laundry. When I board the bus home from buzz tonight, I plan on listening to an episode that examines memorable first lines in poetry (and, if you haven’t already surmised as much, my particular brand of nerd involves getting really, really excited about that kind of thing). With that being said, I’ve found that listening to poetry throughout the day calms me down significantly. The painful experience of riding a crowded bus, filled with similarly sleepy souls, to the Quad for my 9 am class has become almost enjoyable, a moment of meditation and connection instead of stress. I’m also beginning to reexamine my consciousness of those around me, a trait that I once was proud to possess but have become somewhat distanced from in the chaos of recent months. There’s a gentle poem by Phillip Larkin titled “The Mower in which Larkin recalls the unremarkable but deeply painful experience of accidentally killing a small animal while mowing the lawn. This occurrence spurs the poet to consider the fragility of those around him and includes a sentiment that has remained in my thoughts for the past few days: “we should be careful of each other, we should be kind while there is still time. At this time of year especially, with the ensuing scramble for jobs and mad dash to finals, it’s easy to disregard or anger those around you; I am terribly guilty of this. It is also during these times that simple acts of kindness and decency seem to matter the most, and I’m happy to have found a poem to remind me that.

HOT POT LAB

is a traditional hot pot restaurant that recently opened up on campus in Champaign. Hot pots, which are also known as steamboats in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines Brunei, refer to several East Asian varieties of stews. These stews sit in the center of the dining table in a simmering metal pot. Typical hot pot dishes include thinly sliced meat, vegetables, mushrooms, wontons, egg dumplings and seafood. To top this off, the dish is served with a dipping sauce to make it even more flavorful. Hot Pot Lab officially opened at its location on 112 E. Green Street on February 18, 2015. According to two of the four owners, Chen Liang and

Amy Yang, they closed shortly after they opened due to the fact that they didn’t expect so many people to come out. “This kind of overwhelmed us, since we don’t have a huge staff,” said Liang and Yang. So, they decided to close for a week and open back up. Liang and Yang said they decided to open up the restaurant because they love hot pot dinners and there was no restaurant in Champaign that offered these types of dishes. They are open 6 days a week and are closed on Tuesdays, but they plan to become more flexible with time, according to Liang. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the five-story apartment building on First and Green Street, and it has a very modern feel, with a mostly black interior. The tables in the restaurant

have induction burners, so diners can cook their own hot pots dishes. Hot Pot Lab has mostly authentic Chinese hot pot menu items, but they have somewhat Americanized them. They also have a customized ordering process. First they give you a menu that shows what you can put into your hot pot, and they allow for you to check off the items you want. With step one, you choose the kind of broth you want. They have a choice of a mild broth, which is slow-cooked from pork bones and includes traditional herbal ingredients. They have a Szechwan Spicy Broth, which includes Szechwan peppercorns, and within this broth you can choose the level of spice. The last broth that is offered is Tonic Tomato Broth, which is the house special tomato

A PEAK INTO THE WOODS /\ULF 7KHDWUH # ,OOLQRLV SUHVHQWV ´,QWR WKH :RRGVµ TIFFANY LAM

Used with permission from Walt Disney Studios

OVER

the past few months, Into the Woods has been the latest buzz in the cinema industry. You’ve probably heard of the latest iteration produced by Disney in December 2014, featuring a star-studded ensemble including the spunky Anna Kendrick, hilarious Johnny Depp and timeless Meryl Streep. However, did you know that Into the Woods has roots that go even further back into history? The movie originates from a production that debuted at the San Diego Old Globe Theatre in November of 1987, which was inspired by Bruno Bettelheim’s novel, The Uses of Enchantment. The 1987 production was the first time that lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and the book by James Lapine came together. The musical went on to win several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical, during the same season that “Phantom of the Opera” made its debut. “Into the Woods” has had a history of change, including adding the song “No One is Alone” midway through its first run. Its recent resurgence into

the limelight with the film adaptation has only allowed this brilliant production to remind its viewers of the waves it made decades ago, and how much it would influence musical theater to come. The drama includes promiscuous princes, a distressed Rapunzel with a surprisingly caring mother of a witch, Cinderella and her tasteless sisters, bickering paupers, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and the Beanstalk, all of whom eventually find themselves journeying through the woods in search of something that each believes will bring him or her happiness at last—or so they think. As we’ve learned with the classics— nothing is ever as it seems, and trouble often lies just around the corner to bring abounding life lessons. On top of that, the play’s unique flourish on the original teachings of the stories spins the outcome in a different direction, producing lessons that question the stories’ initial morals. Disney brought James Lapine back to produce the screenplay, and the film was a critical and commercial success, but it also contained

notable differences from the stage production. Since Disney is the kind of company that emits a ‘wholesome family, everybody can enjoy it’ type of atmosphere, the corporation toned down on some of the adult humor featured in the classic version. Though Sondheim and Lapine approved of the changes, the violence and sexual content present on stage definitely underwent some Disneyfication. In contrast, the upcoming play here at the University of Illinois is honoring the original stage version under the direction of Jessi D. Hill, a New York City producer who also oversees the Groundbreakers Playwrights Group as Associate Artistic Director at terraNOVA. For those of you who haven’t revisited their favorite childhood fairy tales in a while, here is a spectacle that invites you to take a second look— with a twist. When asked about her favorite scene, Hill was hard-pressed to pick just one, as she has experienced a lot of excitement throughout the entire production. However, she mentioned that she

especially loves staging all of the ensemble numbers since those have been the most entertaining. Though this is Jessi’s first time directing a play at the Krannert Center for Performing Arts, things seem to be running very smoothly. Helping her to produce the show is “a design team made up of professionals and graduate students in the theatre design department” as well as “contributors from the music school and the MFA Acting program.” Louis Bergonzi will be conducting the performing opera singers and acting students from the University’s theatre program, as well as community members in their enjoyable interpretation of the “Into the Woods” score. The show will run from Thursday to Saturday, April 23–25, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at 3 pm. To venture even further into the woods with the production team of this charming musical, there will be Dessert and Conversation prior to the Saturday and Sunday shows. SEXUAL ASSULT AWARENESS MONTH

8QLYHUVLW\ :RPHQV· 5HVRXUFHV &HQWHU RIIHUV YDULRXV HYHQWV WR KRQRU WKH PRQWK OLIVIA CATUARA

APRIL

is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Organizations on college campuses and here at the University are putting together various events each day to raise awareness about the prevalence of sexual assault. “It’s important because, unfortunately, sexual assault is still a huge problem not only on college campuses, but across the country and across the world, and I think that sexual assault is not something that we often feel okay to talk about,” Assistant Director of the University Women’s Resources Center, Molly McLay, said. “We don’t feel comfortable talking about consent in general, so talking about when consent is violated, is certainly difficult.” Raising awareness about sexual assault is a national and international effort. According to McLay, the National Sexual Violence Research Center had an event where Niagara Falls was turned teal during one of the first days of April. Teal is the recognized color for sexual assault awareness. The Women’s Resource Center on campus has organized events throughout this month to raise awareness about sexual assault. Topics such as what to do if you are a bystander to sharing personal stories about sexual assault have been and will be discussed at the many events that take place throughout April. McLay said that there has been good attendance for the many events that have already taken place this month. Many of the events are student run and allow students to share their stories and listen to others’ stories about sexual assault. “We aren’t always aware of the number of survivors around us, the ways we can support them and the things that we as individuals can do to challenge rape culture and intervene when we see sexually disrespectful things happening,” McLay said. One particular event that took place on April 7th that was a success was the It Happens Here Project. It’s a project where students can anonymously submit a story of when they were sexually assaulted. The stories are then read aloud at the event. Students can choose to read it themselves, or they can have someone else read it. The It Happens Here Project is new to the University this year, but McLay said that this is also the first time that it took place on a larger campus such as The University of Illinois. The It Happens Here event brought about 150-200 people to share and to listen to stories of sexual assault. “The events are free and open to the public and

6 buzz April 17-23, 2015

everyone is welcome at any of them,” said McLay. “It doesn’t matter what gender the person is, if they are a part of the community or on campus. Really anyone is welcome at anything.” There are many events still happening this month to raise awareness for sexual assault. These events include: lectures, discussions, movie screenings, workshops and walks. Today is “Stop Telling Women to Smile Day”, “Day of Silence” and “Walk a Mile”. “Stop Telling Women to Smile Day” is important in that, according to McLay, it brings up a small action that is often overlooked but can make a huge impact in the way people think about sexual assault. It is a small but very meaningful thing to say to someone walking down the street. “Little behaviors like that kind cause this chain that leads to more and more forceful types of behaviors that might lead to sexual assault and really condone it in our culture,” McLay said. Other events that are taking place this month are: Illini Art Therapy Association Workshop, Sexual Health Peers’ Consent to Prevent Campaign, Chalk the Quad with Advocates for Choice, “Sex Out Loud” Fair, Reclaiming Gender Socialization: A Lecture by Imran Siddiquee, Sex and Gender Film Series: The Mask You Live In, “Dish It Up" Movement to End Violence Against Women, Denim Day, “Paint the Town Teal”, ROTC Sexual Assault and Harassment Prevention, Beat the Blame Game and Take Back the Night.

Siddiquee’s lecture is called “Relearning Gender Socialization”. McLay said that Siddiquee’s lecture is about the importance of stereotypes and gender representations in the media, and the effect on gender violence. On April 30, the final day of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, The Women’s Resources Center asks people to wear the color teal to spread awareness about sexual assault. ROTC will host a training session the same day, which will in-

and end at the Engineering Quad. “The heart of Sexual Assault Awareness Month is ‘Take Back the Night,’” McLay said. “It’s the community gathering together to say: ‘we’re not going to tolerate sexual assault here.’”

MOVIE REVIEW: UNFRIENDED $ IUHVK SUHPLVH IDOOV YLFWLP WR FKHDS VFDUHV DAVID ROBERTSON

internet can be a scary place, from the threat of viruses to identity theft to cyber-bullying, thus Universal’s new horror film Unfriended smartly uses it as a set piece to bring a frightening story to the big screen. However, beyond the unique concept and presentation of the film, the whole affair is exasperating and downright stupid. At the beginning of the movie, the audience is shown a fuzzy clip of a young woman named Laura Barns committing suicide after being cyberbullied via social media. The focus then shifts to a group of friends’ Skype session, which goes awry when an unidentified caller joins the conversation. When each teen in the group starts receiving threatening messages from the unnamed person on Skype and from Laura on Facebook, they jump to the conclusion that someone has hacked the deceased girl’s account as part of a cruel prank. Little do they know that what they are dealing with is far worse than a prankster. Instead, this mysterious entity is there to ensure that these detestable bullies get what they deserve for their lies and secrets.

KRANNERT CENTER

mop + bmw = <3

Because we don’t get to know Laura as anything more than an ominous presence on social media, it’s difficult to relish her gruesome revenge on the bullies. On top of that, the visible actors don’t do much to give their characters depth beyond an annoying shell, so the killings feel pretty run-of-the-mill. After a slew of disappointing found footage films, including Paranormal Activity 4 and The Devil Inside, Unfriended deserves points for trying to breathe new life into the dying subgenre. Essentially one take, the entire movie unfolds on the female lead’s laptop screen. While this idea is fresh and a clever way to depict this story, the presentation becomes confining and frustrating during the sequences of terror. Especially irritating is the shaky and choppy footage at times as the screen loads and the Internet connection buffers. I understand that the makers used this technique to add realism, but for the sake of easeful viewing and clarity, they could have forgone this accent. Unfriended’s ultimate downfall is that it treads a thin line between a socially aware and thoughtprovoking picture and an exploitative fright flick. The movie verges on sending viewers an important message by using hot topics like cyber-bullying and youth suicide as centerpieces. Nonetheless, the target audience likely isn’t going to watch this movie to think critically about social issues, but rather to be temporarily frightened or titillated. This leads me to feel that Unfriended is simply using these heavy-handed subjects as a platform to deliver gimmicky, cheap scares and to make a killing at the box office. In my opinion, the personal demons the characters face when confronted by Laura’s ghost are far more terrifying than the preposterous moments of vengeful gore. For Generation Z kids who spend more time chatting with their friends on Facebook than in person, Unfriended will make a great slumber party staple, but anyone who was born before the late 90’s and can hold a genuine face-to-face conversation will be left feeling irritated and disheartened. If you’re looking for a movie that maturely tackles the horrors of the Internet, check out the drama Disconnect instead.
