Steph’s baby turmoi Jeremy flew to Thailand w ith a group of pals last week

As her ex jets off on a lads’ holiday, Steph Davis is preparing to raise her baby as a single mum

A FRESH START

However, friends shot down the rumours and blamed her silence on the stress caused by hurtful Steph and Jeremy were loved-up on last year’s CBB

, to take some much-needed time out before the baby’s arrival. And last week, 26-year-old Irish model Jeremy, who had a stormy four-month relationship with Steph following their stint on Celebrity Big Brother last year, appeared to intensify the drama as he jetted off to Thailand on a lads’ holiday just days before her due date. He also made what was thought to be a thinly veiled swipe at his ex when he posted a picture of himself on Snapchat, captioned “Waiting for u son.” A source says: “Steph’s determined to have a positive outlook, but she’s been finding it tough in the days leading up to the birth. And while she knows she’ll be a brilliant single mum, she’s been feeling understandably anxious about what lies ahead. Hearing Jeremy

had gone to Thailand when he knew she could give birth at any moment made it clearer than ever that he has no interest in being part of the baby’s life. “Steph is very close to her family and has a strong circle of both male and female friends – all of whom she knows will be there to support her every step of the way with the baby. Even though Jeremy seems out of the picture, Steph knows she’s not alone in all of this.” TOXIC BREAK-UP

Steph and Jeremy’s acrimonious break-up was regularly played out on social media, with months of sniping – which included Steph alleging Jeremy

had cheated on her, as well as accusing him of taking drugs. Jeremy lashed back at his ex, demanding a paternity test and insisting the baby couldn’t be his as Steph had been on her period at the time of their split. However, Steph has always maintained that Jeremy is the father. And now pals say the soap star, who was hospitalised in November following crippling stomach pains, is determined not to let her ex get to her any more and affect her first few precious weeks of motherhood. A source says: “Steph has always dreamed of being a mum, and after such a dramatic few months she just wants to enjoy her new son and the highs of motherhood.” By Daisy McLure CLOSERONLINE.CO.UK

he’s had a dramafuelled pregnancy, which has been intensified by a very public and bitter battle with her estranged ex, Jeremy McConnell – who’s always claimed the baby isn’t his. And now pals tell us that Stephanie Davis, who had reportedly gone into labour when Closer went to press, is trying to put her heartbreak behind her and prepare for life as a single parent. A source says: “It’s been a tough few months for Steph and she’s devastated that Jeremy doesn’t seem to want to get involved. She’s suffered a lot of turmoil but is determined to be strong for her baby and do the best she can.” The 23-year-old former Hollyoaks actress sparked concern over recent weeks following her uncharacteristic absence from social media, which fuelled reports she’d secretly given birth over the New Year.

But the former glamour model – also known as Katie Price – shot down the rumours two days later by letting everyone know in her typically upfront manner that her period had arrived with a tampon selfie. However, insiders say Jordan, who has spoken openly about wanting to adopt, is determined to crack on with surrogacy plans to have twins by the end of the year. A source says: “Katie has been hellbent on having another child for months and thinks surrogacy is now the best option. She thinks having another baby is the answer to all their problems. “She was going down the adoption route, but didn’t realise how tough and drawn-out it would be. Now she’s looking at using a professional surrogate because she’s always dreamt about having twins. She’s speaking to potential carriers from abroad and would prefer the candidate not to know she is a celebrity beforehand. Ideally she’d want them to move into the family home, too. “Katie believes that more kids could bring her and Kieran closer and save a their marriage. She believes this surrogate will

She also referred to her ex, singer Dane Bowers – who was also in attendance – as the “love of her life.” Last October, Jordan was linked to Geordie Shore Lothario Scotty T after they were seen driving to her hotel together – but she denied claims of any romance, insisting he was taking her to a sunbed session. Just days later she announced she was taking a break from her presenting gig on Loose Women to work on her marriage. A source says: “Kieran thinks now is the worst time possible to have more children. He already has his hands full tending to their farm and looking after the kids a lot of the time. Meanwhile, Jordan’s ex-husband Alex Reid spoke out last week and blasted ITV producers for choosing her as a Loose Women panellist. The model’s cross-dressing cage-fighter ex, who split with Jordan in 2010 after just 11 months of marriage, said: “I don’t think she sets a very good example to people who watch Loose Women. “Katie brings absolute shame on the production – it is a shame on modern society and wha we stand for and put up with. Danielle Lloyd’s close circle say she’s fuming with her ex-husband Jamie O’Hara and ex pal Nicola McLean’s flirty antics on Celebrity Big Brother – and has told pals it’s left her “disgusted.” Last week, viewers watched married mum-of-two Nicola flirting with her former friend’s ex, repeatedly kissing him on the cheek and asking: “Can you look after me?” Nicola even insinuated the pair had kissed before when she said: “We’ve done it before, we can’t do it again.” And, as the episode ended, and the housemates went to bed, Nicola could be heard whispering to Jamie: “As soon as the light goes off, you better come over here and reassure me.” A source says: “Danielle’s shocked and disgusted by Nicola and Jamie’s behaviour – she is furious with the pair of them and thinks Nicola should have more respect for herself as a married woman and a mum. She feels Nicola is out for revenge and throwing herself at Jamie is the last straw.” The models became friends while they were both married to footballers, with Danielle’s former husband Jamie being close with Nicola’s

husband, Tom Williams. But after rumours that Jamie had cheated, Danielle split with him in 2014 and the girls’ friendship turned sour. Just last month, Nicola lashed out at Danielle, who said she’d named her new chihuahua Rocky – the name of Nicola’s 10-yearold son. Nicola, who’s also mum to Striker, six, then Tweeted: “Great name – might name my new addition Archie” and admitted she was “p****d off.” And Nicola wasted no time in slating Danielle on CBB. When housemate Austin Armacost asked whether she’d ever met a woman who was desperate to be a WAG, Nicola said: “Jamie did and he married her!” In the CBB house, Jamie, 30, has also been embroiled in a love triangle – both he and reality star Calum Best, 35, seemed to be fighting for the affection of US actress Jasmine Waltz, 34. The trio even hopped into bed together, after Jasmine began kissing Calum, then Jamie, who jumped under the covers to join them. A pal adds: “Danielle wants to chat to Jamie about what he was thinking when he leaves CBB. She’s hoping nothing worse happens while he’s in there. She’s living on tenterhooks.”

I started taking it when I was in my early 20s. “Although I was in a stable relationship, having a baby was not something we wanted at the time. I was on it for a couple of years until my relationship ended. In that time I realised I’d become increasingly irritable and prone to tears. “But the worst thing was a constant feeling that something bad was going to happen, making me feel constantly anxious. I stopped driving on motorways as I was convinced I was going to crash, and would have arguments with my thenboyfriend, shouting at him in a way that wasn’t like me. t was only when I e off it, aged 25, and nt back to my usual imistic self that I lised how terrible it d been, and that it could ly have been the Pill ecting me like that.” DE EFFECTS Mel is not alone. ecent research rom the University f Copenhagen confirmed a link

contraceptives and depression. And a survey run by The Debrief,f a Bauer website for 20-something women, has shown that a shocking 45 per cent of women who are taking or have taken the Pill have experienced depression. Almost half of women who have taken the Pill said they experienced anxiety, while 20 per cent reported having panic attacks. The Debrief has launched an investigation called “Mad About The Pill” to uncover further evidence of the suspected correlation between women suffering from anxiety, depression, panic attacks and even suicidal thoughts as a result of hormonal contraception. Their readers reported terrible side effects. One said: “When I was younger I assumed that was just how I was. I would have tearful breakdowns.” Another says: “While I was on the Pill I just thought I was really sensitive. I cried all the time – arguments, adverts, anything.” Expert Professor Øjvind Lidegaard, from Copenhagen, says: “The scientific community should accept that there is a causal relationship between

depression and hormonal contraception. Women should reconsider whether the best contraception method for them is hormonal contraception or whether they should find others which influence their mood and mental health less.” FINDING WHAT WORKS

Dr Sarah Jarvis agrees that women who are worried about depression and the Pill should speak to their GP, but explains there may be other factors that contribute to a change in mood. She adds: “While research shows a link between the Pill and depression, we shouldn’t overlook the fact that it’s an effective method of contraception for many women. “There are two types of pill, one which contains progesterone (sometimes called the ‘mini pill’) and another which contains oestrogen and progesterone. Progesteronedominant pills can lower libido as well as causing depression in some women. If you’re worried, speak to your GP about switching the type of pill you’re on or coming off it altogether.” Mel went back on the Pill when

here are good reasons why 43-year-old mum-of-two Mel Atterbury refuses to take the Pill – the feeling of gloom is overwhelming, she bursts into tears regularly and often finds herself raging over trivial matters. Such is her determination not to put up with these debilitating side effects that, knowing her family was complete, she asked to be sterilised at the same time as she had a Caesarean with her second child. I went on the Pill in my teens – and for over a decade, I dealt with nausea, vomiting, headaches, mood swings, skin problems, and bleeding every day for months. It was horrendous. “I first asked for a sterilisation in my mid-20s, because the only pill that worked for me was so high-dose it put me at risk of fatal blood clots. It was a huge four-year battle to get the NHS to listen, but I finally had my tubes tied at the age of 30, and I couldn’t wait to stop taking the Pill. All the side effects disappeared and I feel better than I have in years. I have no regrets, I know I never will.”

She adds: “I asked my GP what I could do, but my surgery only offered hormonal contraception – injections, implants, the oral Pill, or coil, none of which suited me. Eventually I went private and got a diaphragm. “I’ve been told that the more modern Pill, with less hormones, might suit me better – but I’m not risking it. I had to take the morning-after pill a couple of years ago and for three weeks I felt horrendous. TEARFUL KIM:

‘I’lldoanything forbabyNo.3!’ Pals reveal how, after two traumatic pregnancies, Kim Kardashian is determined to have a third baby and strengthen her marriage

S

he sparked pregnancy rumours last week when she was spotted leaving a pre-natal clinic, a an emotional Kim and pals say Kardashian has been looking into every option to make baby number three a possibility after struggling to get her marriage back on track with Kanye West. The 35-year-old reality star, who looked sombre and downcast as she left the Beverly Hills doctor’s office, has previously revealed how she may not be able to have another child naturally due to health complications – and Closer has reported how her sister Kourtney, 37, has even stepped in to offer herself as a surrogate. A HUGE RISK

In her previous pregnancies, Kim suffered with preeclampsia and placenta accreta, both life-threatening conditions, which caused complications when she had North, three, and 13-monthold Saint. This led doctors to warn that falling pregnant again would be “too risky.” Opening up last spring about adding to her family, Kim said: “I don’t think I can 18

It would be a really dangerous environment for me if I were to get pregnant again.’” HORRIFIC MEMORIES

She’s been investigating if there’s any chance to have another baby naturally or whether to proceed with the surrogacy option. “Kim’s been so unhappy recently and she knows it’s a long road ahead until she can give North and Saint a little sibling.” The source adds: “Kanye has been trying to reassure Kim that there is no pressure to extend their family – he hates to see her so stressed out.” Adding to her woes, police last week arrested 17 people, including her chauffeur –

who was later released – in connection with the Paris jewellery heist in October, which saw Kim held hostage and robbed of her £5m engagement ring. A source says: “It’ dredged up horrific memories for Kim. She’s devastated tha people who know h are actually being questioned. She’s fe really fragile since the whole incident happened and doesn’t want the stress of reliving it all over again.” FAMILY FOCUS

Fitness fans MaryBeth and Philip Ricardo don’t just obsess about their own bodies – their kids are bodybuilders, too…

M

ost parents like to see their children running around and doing some exercise – but ultra-fit MaryBeth and Philip Ricardo insist their children do 100 sit-ups, 100 push-ups and 100 squats every day in the run-up to a competition to get super-toned. Shockingly, y Ethan, 13, and nine-year-old Sanali regularly follow rigorous training regimes for bodybuilding competitions – and have toys taken away if they don’t work out hard enough. MaryBeth, 36, and Philip, 45, insist the siblings stick to strict diets and they are rarely allowed

treats. They even miss out on friends’ birthday parties so they aren’t tempted to eat cake. On weekdays, the children follow the same eating plan as their parents – oatmeal and egg for breakfast, chicken, brown rice and broccoli for lunch, then a dinner of fish, steak or chicken with brown rice and vegetables Their snacks are nuts and raisin or a small amount of cheese, an they only drink water. ‘MILITARY’ WORKOUTS

‘SUCH A RIGID REGIME IS WORRYING’ Dr Christian Jessen says: “When it comes to children exercising as regularly as Ethan and Sanali do, I’m not too worried about their physical health, although sticking to such a restrictive diet isn’t ideal. Children have different energy needs to adults, so they do benefit from some sugar and carbs. “But emotionally, such a rigid regime is worrying – it may well lead to body dysmorphia, eating disorders or rebelling against being so controlled. It may also lead to alienation from their peers and them missing out on having an enjoyable childhood.”

But while MaryBeth admits she has concerns that their strict regime could cause issues for her children in the future, she’s convinced it’s for the best. MaryBeth, from Virginia, USA, says: “I worry being this strict might set them up to develop body issues or that they could rebel. They spend a lot of time looking in the mirror, and Ethan will occasionally worry he’s fat, but I believe the pros outweigh the possible negatives. “Our kids are growing up knowing how to make healthy choices – and exercise is a way of life for all of us. We ban anything that gets in the way – no television or seeing friends in the week, and no junk food.

We were clear from the start that if they wanted to compete, they had to put in hard work to do well. Philip can be very tough on the kids, but sometimes you have to be cruel to help them reach their potential.” TOUGH LOVE

MaryBeth adds: “There’s a chart on the wall and when the kids have completed their exercises they tick them off. If they don’t, there are consequences, such as extra chores or toys being confiscated. Sometimes, Ethan begs not to do his exercises, but he can be a bit lazy so needs

Meanwhile, MaryBeth admits that being an overweight teenager shaped the parent she’s become. She says: “I’m only 5ft 1 and, when I hit puberty at 15, I gained weight, which made me depressed. I started comfort eating and it spiralled from there. I reached 11st and a size 12-14 and I was so miserable that when I became a mum I was determined my kids would never be fat.” After leaving school, MaryBeth lost 3½st – by drastically restricting her calorie intake – to join the military. It wasn’t until 2005, when she met Philip through work that she started getting into fitness. The couple married in 2008 and, by then, she’d started weight training with him. In 2012, she entered her first bikini bodybuilding competition. She came third, but didn’t enjoy being on stage, so now trains others instead. Philip still competes twice a year. Although both parents are committed to helping their children reach their fitness goals, they maintain if there came a day when they were no longer interested, they wouldn’t push them – although MaryBeth says they would still insist they stuck to a healthy lifestyle. While their friends and family are mostly supportive, the couple were trolled online and accused of child abuse after they featured on a US TV show. MaryBeth says: “People say we should be put in jail for child abuse, which is ludicrous. Health and fitness are vital. People might think we’re too harsh, but I don’t feel guilty. Too many kids grow up being spoilt. Every parent should do what they feel is right for their family.” By Georgina Bisval 23

Now insiders tell Closerr that more stars in the entertainment industry have started to view Brad as the victim in the highly publicised split. Angelina, 41, filed for divorce last September, citing rreconcilable differences and signalling the end of Hollywood’s most powerful couple. But despite announcing ast week that they’ve agreed to settle the divorce privately, the split has been dogged by reports of bitter infighting, explosive allegations and a fierce custody battle over their six children. He’s had words of encouragement from the likes of Matt Damon, Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman and even Vince Vaughn – who briefly dated Brad’s ex Jennifer Aniston. EXPLOSIVE CLAIMS Numerous US reports claimed that Maleficentt star Angelina had kicked off a smear campaign against Brad, 53, after she alleged he’d become “physically abusive” towards one of their children on a private plane, flying from Europe to LA last September. Brad was investigated, but later cleared by both the FBI and the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) over the alleged incident. Reports also circulated that a big reason behind their split was that Angelina had become increasingly “fed up” with Brad’s consumption of weed and alcohol. He was also linked romantically to French actress Marion Cotillard and pop star Selena Gomez in the aftermath – however, both allegations were strongly denied. Although the estranged couple – who were together for 12 years – have now agreed to keep their divorce private, Angelina initially filed their temporary custody agreement publicly and Brad was denied an emergency hearing last month when he tried to seal those documents. In a court filing in December, Angelina’s lawyers alleged that Brad would “prefer to keep the entire case private,” because of the FBI’s investigation, even

She arrived at a screening of The White Helmets with her husband of two years, Hollywood star George, in an uncharacteristically loose dress that seemed to show a little bump. George, 55, has previously admitted that he’d love to start a family with Amal, 38, saying in 2015: “Yes [we are interested in having kids], but we’re taking our time.” And last year it was reported that builders were told to create the “perfect family home” when the couple renovated their 17th century mansion in Oxfordshire. A source says: “George and Amal are so happy at the moment and their inner circle wouldn’t be surprised if she was pregnant. George spent years as a bachelor before he met Amal but pals say he’s eager to be a dad now.”

‘Realising I’d never have more kids was so final’ Loose Women star Andrea McLean on giving up her dream to have more children after her hysterectomy and why she’s in no rush to marry again

he’s not had an easy time over the past 10 years, with a marriage break-down and health problems that led to a recent major operation. But 47-year-old Loose Women presenter Andrea McLean – who looks in better shape than ever after losing a stone – credits her partner of three years Nick Feeney for helping her through it. Andrea has already been married twice, firstly to Nick Green – with whom she had son Finlay, now 15, and, in 2009, she wed builder Steve Toms. They had daughter Amy, now 10, but split at the end of 2012. In an exclusive interview with Closer, she says: “At the moment things are fine – and I don’t want to become the Elizabeth Taylor or the Zsa Zsa Gabor of my family! But I haven’t ruled out getting married again.”

She adds: “I just have to be really happy with what I have. If marriage happens in the future, then so be it, but that doesn’t affect where I am now. For the moment, Nick and

I are great and there is no big plan.” After battling ill health for over a year, the star credits businessman Nick for caring for her following a hysterectomy op in September – which she had after living for years with crippling endometriosis that would often leave her doubled up in pain. She smiles: “‘Nurse Nick’ has been wonderful, he really looked after me.”

and I are blessed. Between us we have four healthy, happy, wonderful children.”

GREAT SHAPE

Andrea admits she’s relieved the operation is now behind her, but she reveals that she’s suffered some complications – and a further health scare. She says: “I’m going back into hospital to have a procedure because I’m not healing as well as I should be. I also had a terrible health scare when I got signed off by a surgeon six weeks after the operation. “He told me I had Vasculitis; where the immune system attacks healthy blood vessels and can shut off blood supply to your organs. The next thing was finding out if it had spread anywhere else and Nick and I worried until my blood tests came back clear.” However, Andrea admits the finality of not being able to have more children hit her after her hysterectomy. She says: “I had a moment after the operation. I looked at Nick and had this overwhelming feeling that the option had gone of having kids together. It was so final. But we are grateful that I am healthy. Life is good and Nick

Now Andrea – who returned to Loose Women in November – is looking forward to her first outing of the year at the National Television Awards next week, where the show is nominated for Best Live Magazine Show. She jokes: “I won’t be missing the NTAs; they might have to carry me down the stairs like Cleopatra but I am going in!” Looking in great shape, Andrea admits she has already chosen a black slinky dress to show off her new 9st figure. She’s lost a stone over the past four months since cutting sugar out of her diet. Andrea was only able to start exercising again two weeks ago because of her op, and admits: “I gave up sugar before my operation last year. I wanted to make sure my body was in the best shape it could be. I have to say that I don’t miss chocolate – the cravings soon went and I have much more energy.” Meanwhile, Andrea celebrates 10 years on Loose Women in March and says being on the show has helped her during difficult times. She says: “It’s coincided with the 10 hardest years of my life, but the show has been the best thing to happen to me.” By Olivia Buxton

INTERVIEW

‘Coleen wears her heart on her sleeve’ Coleen’s been no stranger to controversy on Celebrity Big Brother

She’s been glued to Celebrity Big Brotherr since her Loose Women co-host Coleen Nolan entered the show two weeks ago, and – despite recent controversies – Andrea says her pal will do well. Coleen, 51, upset Calum Best by saying she would prefer him as a one-night stand rather than a boyfriend, and admitted she wanted to “punch Angie Best’s face in” after a row in the house. Andrea says: “Coleen clearly got caught up in the moment; she hasn’t got a mean bone in her body. She wears her heart on her sleeve, but she has handled CBB brilliantly before and I think she is handling it brilliantly now. “With Calum, it’s just like Snog, Marry, Avoid, and we’ve all played that!” Last week, Coleen tearfully admitted on Channel 5 show In Therapy y that she was having marriage problems with husband Ray, and is still haunted by first husband Shane Richie’s cheating. Andrea adds: “My advice for her marriage would be to try to talk. Hopefully they will take their time and make any decisions with love. They (Coleen and Ray) are great people and will be doing whatever is best for them.”

‘I want to be a pregnant man – but the NHS won’thelpme’ Hayden Cross made headlines last week when he became the first British transgender man to reveal he’s pregnant. He used a sperm donor to conceive after the NHS refused to freeze his eggs. Here, we speak to transgender man Sawyer Wright, 17, who is also hoping to have a baby

ransgender man Hayden Cross sparked controversy last week after revealing his blossoming baby bump. The 20-year-old – who was born a girl called Paige but is now legally male and has started hormone treatment – intended to have his eggs frozen on the NHS in the hope he might have children in the future. But he’s been denied the process and can’t afford to have it done privately, so has used an anonymous sperm donor and is now 18 weeks pregnant. He will continue his full transition following the pregnancy, after which he will have male genitals. Transgender teen Sawyer Wright understands Hayden’s situation only too well. He was

also denied the option to have his eggs frozen on the NHS and at just 17 has decided to use a sperm donor to have a baby. HOLDING OUT HOPE

Single Sawyer, who was born a girl called Sophie and now identifies as a gay man, explains: “I’ve always wanted a baby and when I read about Hayden it gave me hope that I could get pregnant too. “I was devastated when I was told I couldn’t freeze my eggs on the NHS as I can’t afford to go

private. The male hormones I’ve been prescribed could affect my fertility so I’m putting my transition on hold for now. “I feel angry. I can’t help being transgender and I shouldn’t have the right to be a parent one day taken away from me. “Ideally I’d like to have children later in life, but I don’t think I can wait much longer to transition as I feel depressed living in a female body.” Sawyer, who grew up in Ashford, Kent, with his mum Dawn, 50, his stepdad and siblings, was always a tomboy growing up. Sawyer says: “I identified more with my brother than my older sister; I liked karate and football.”

SAWYER SAYS HE FELT DEPRESSE D WHEN PUBERT Y HIT

When Sawyer hit puberty, his feelings regarding his gender brought on depression. He recalls: “I hated looking at myself in the mirror and I felt down when I started my period.” In December 2015 a near-fatal accident made Sawyer realise he was transgender. He recalls: “I was walking along the seafront with my mum and stepdad when I slipped and fell into the freezing water. My stepdad jumped in and dragged me to the shore. Being so close to death made me reassess my life – I wanted to be a boy.” In February, Sawyer told his mum he wanted to change sex. He says: “She was really accepting. I cut my hair short and bought a new wardrobe of boys’ clothes.” BABY DREAMS

Sawyer started undergoing counselling, but when a GP told him his chances of having a baby would be slim once he started taking hormone tablets he began to panic. He says: “I was devastated by the thought I may never be a parent. One day I’d like to marry, but that’s in the future.” In April, Sawyer – who moved out of home last month – joined

WORLD’S FIRST PREGNANT MAN:

‘No one should be denied the chance to have kids’ Thomas Beatie stunned the world when he revealed he was pregnant in April 2008. The 42-year-old was born a girl, Tracy Lehuanani LaGondino, but began living as a man aged 23. He took male hormones – which he stopped taking during his pregnancy – but kept his female sex organs so he could start a family. Thomas has since gone on to have three children – Susan, eight, Austin, seven, and Jensen, six – using a sperm donor, and hopes to have a fourth child with his second wife Amber, 46. He tells Closer: “It was strange being pregnant; I developed curves. But I love being a father. We’re hoping our next attempt at pregnancy works – I’d love another daughter. No one should be denied the chance to have kids.”

Disappointed by his lack of success, Sawyer decided to have a one-night stand a few weeks later. He says: “I joined a dating website and started chatting to a guy in his 20s. I told him what I wanted to do and he agreed to help me.” Sawyer – who’s left school and hopes to work as a motivational speaker – didn’t manage to fall pregnant and is currently trying to find another sperm donor. He adds: “People might think I’m too young to have a baby but I know my own mind. I just want to have a baby and then enjoy life as a man. “I’ve looked into adoption but it’s a complicated process and I think it would be difficult for a single trans man to adopt.” Sawyer’s mum Dawn tells Closer: “Ideally I’d like Sawyer to wait and get some life experience behind him before getting pregnant, but I understand how desperate he is to start the treatment so he becomes fully male and how much he longs for a baby. I’ll support him all the way.” By Helen Morgan CLOSERONLINE.CO.UK

‘The US people chose Trump – now they have to support him’ As a Brit living in the USA, I’ve been thinking about what an interesting time it is here in the run-up to Donald Trump’s inauguration as President. There’s a strange atmosphere; an uncertainty nobody seems to be able to put their finger on. The country is so divided, which is strange for me. Even if people didn’t want Trump elected, they just have to get to grips with the fact that he is the President. It’s interesting that so many celebs were on his rival Hillary Clinton’s side – including Katy Perry, Jay-Z and Meryl Streep – but they obviously didn’t have the influence expected to get her to power and they’re probably finding it hard to accept what’s

happening. Even booking performers for the inauguration ceremony, which is usually an honour, has proved difficult as so many are shying away. In the past, people would have said: “OK, that person has won, let’s get on with it.” To my knowledge, there’s never been such a dramatic situation of struggling to accept before. When Brexit in the UK happened, it showed Americans anything can happen. What it all boils down to is that the people have spoken and now they need to invest their support in Trump. As Barack Obama said in his leaving speech, the nation needs to unite going forward and we all need to focus on the positives.

I fell off the wagon when we finished all the Golden Globes live stuff for Lorraine and GMB – someone bought me a glass of wine and a burger!

MY TYPICAL DAY:

‘I don’t sleep until it’s light outside!’ I WAKE AROUND 8AM and do my best to work out, then I have a swim and a steam, followed by a drink of lemon and Manuka honey. AT ABOUT 10AM, MY ASSISTANT ARRIVES WITH COFFEE. I’ll catch up on all of the award-nominated movies and documentaries and do research for interviews. I also do voiceovers. I CAN FORGET TO EAT LUNCH, which is bad, but I’m always on the go. THEN IT’S ON TO INTERVIEWS AND EVENTS. Being live is fly-by-the-seatRoss is a regular of-your-pants stuff; you have no idea on Lorraine what people will say. I once interviewed Antonio Banderas live at an Oscars after-party. I asked him if he’d been at the ceremony, and he said: “No, I watched it at home in my jammies!” I’M IN THE LA STUDIO FOR GMB B about 9pm, then Lorraine starts at midnight US time. I can be talking to producers till 1.20am. AT 2.30AM I’LL BE WORKING ON A SCREENPLAY for a TV pilot based on two books I wrote with author Shari Low – Taking Hollywood and Breaking Hollywood. BEFORE LONG, IT CAN EASILY BE 4AM. When it starts to get light outside, I know it’s time to go to bed! I try to get four to five hours’ sleep.

However, over the recent year festive period, a record 127 pets were handed in to Dogs T Trust, and 1,000 owners also got in touch to say they couldn’t cope with their furry friends. On top of this, the RSPCA saw a huge increase in the number of dogs being dumped by their owners – especially fashionable pups, such as French bulldogs and Chihuahuas, whose popularity has spiked due to celebrities and bloggers posting adorable images on websites like Instagram. Hiking with hubby pays off

At 57, Nancy Shevell has an age-defying figure with toned limbs and a slim waist – and could have her husband Paul McCartney to thank. The former meatloving businesswoman, who showed off her fab figure in St Barts recently, overhauled her diet and became vegetarian a few months after she began dating Paul, who’s a vegan, in 2007. She swapped her “beloved steaks” for avocado sandwiches and tomato soups, and had a veggie meal and vegan cake at their wedding in 2011. Nancy and Paul also share a love of working out – they’re regularly photographed power walking through the streets of New York and even had a joint gym session just a few hours before they got married. Nancy also has a personal trainer, r who works her on the Stairmaster (a machine that simulates climbing stairs), a spinning bike and the weights.

Mum-of-one Fergie wowed last month when she flaunted her bikini body on a beach while on holiday. The 41-yearold is often spotted jogging or hiking with her husband Josh Duhamel and says that working out is her life mantra. “I work out for selfesteem and self-worth,” she said. “It is like investment in health and happiness.” The Black Eyed Peas singer has also cut meat from her diet, sticking to mostly fish, eggs, fruit and veg, but admits her downfall is latenight snacking. She says: “I try to eat a lot of fruit and veg, but sometimes late at night I tend to have fast-food meals – and that’s where I get myself into trouble.” And while she takes her health seriously, the Glamorous singer said she wasn’t going to pressurise herself to lose her baby weight after she had her son, Axl, in 2013. She said: “I’ll get back into a bikini one day.”

She overhauled her diet, cutting out sugary treats and fruit and instead eating a highprotein and high-fat diet. She said: “It was a revelation. It’s completely changed the way I eat and I’m convinced it helped reshape my body. Instead of snacking on fruit, I eat almonds. I love dairy, so I eat a lot of Greek yoghurt and butter. And I always go for the full-fat versions, as I think they are more natural than low-fat and fill me up more.” The star, 51, says she has a personal trainer to push her with workouts and a treadmill at home. And as she gets older, she says she works out to stick to her mantra never to have surgery. She says: “I don’t want to start down that route… it’s a slippery slope. he hit headlines for her raunchy behaviour on a night out in London with her girlfriends last week – where she performed a sexy lap dance and partied with an almost-nude hostess. JADE’S LOVED-UPHOLS While her Little Mix bandmates have colourful love lives, Jade Thirlwall seems to be as lovedup and as happy as ever. Over the past year, they’ve flown across the world to spend time together, as The Struts toured the US and Little Mix promoted their album Glory Days.

Perrie and Zayn’s acrimonious split in August 2015 has been fuelled by a bitter war of words, with Perrie appearing to take a thinly-veiled swipe at the star’s lack of skills in the bedroom in the band’s recent hit, Shout Out To My Ex, which featured the lyrics: “Hope she ain’t fakin’ it like I did, babe.” A source adds: “Pals are hoping her new relationship with Alex will help Perrie finally move on from the pain of her split from Zayn. “Zayn has tried to steer clear of Perrie as he still harbours regret over how things ended, and says they both need to close that chapter of their lives for good.”

When her engagement ended two months ago, Little Mix star Jesy Nelson didn’t waste any time moving on – and it now appears her ex Jake Roche has followed suit, a move pals say has touched a nerve with the singer. from ex-Made In Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh, Professor Green has turned a corner professionally and personally. With a new single, and a job presenting TV show Lip Sync Battle UK, the recently divorced rapper believes his new romance with model Fae Williams is the “real deal.” Following his split from Millie, 27, Professor Green, 33 – real name Stephen Manderson – was linked to a number of women, but he insists his “dates” – including TV presenters Laura Whitmore, Vogue Williams and Gizzi Erksine – were just good mates. “I try not to pay any attention to the comments,” says Pro Green. “It’s so funny that it’s 2017 and I’m not allowed to have a female friend I don’t sleep with. Is that not a little bit sexist? And to suggest any girl that I’m pictured with is having sex with me, I think there’s something wrong with that. “I do have a lot of gorgeous female friends but I am not sleeping with them all.” He pauses and smiles: “Cor, can you imagine... during the making of my first and second albums. “When I meet a girl I will always talk to my friends, saying: ‘I am serious about this one!’ And they respond: ‘But you have still got one eye on the door!’ I thought: ‘I am going to put that into a song one day,’ and eventually I did.” As well as having a colourful love life, the star has struggled with depression and has revea how his father’s suicide i 2008 impacted his anxiety. Previously, he has said: “I’ve always suffered with anxiety – as a kid it was a terrible problem for me. I spent a lot of time off school and at the doctors. I didn’t have the tools or the vocabulary to say: ‘I’m anxious.’ “That really stemmed from [my father] being in and out of my life as a kid. I was always worried about people leaving me. I loved him, you know? It was difficult.”

A QUICKIE DIVORCE

HEALTH KICK

Late last year, the singer released a single entitled Back On The Market, which appeared to take a swipe at ex-wife Millie. The couple were granted a quickie divorce last May after announcing their two-anda-half year marriage was over only three months earlier. And just days after their divorce was finalised, Millie went public with her rekindled romance with Hugo Taylor, 30, five years after the pair

He also explored the topic of male suicide in the BBC Three documentary Suicide And Me, in which he was filmed breaking down. Pro Green, who’s currently co-hosting Lip Sync Battle UK K with Mel B, says: “It was supposed to be a broad look at male suicide, but a lot of it progressed into my story. “At the beginning I was scared of people seeing me at my most vulnerable. But I bit the bullet and you saw me smiling and

And some Williams in y fans, who don’t buy Novembe r hat stuff, have been ng for me to return.” Pro Green also admits he’d like to get in shape as part of a health kick for 2017, but it’s been hard due to ill-health. The selfconfessed former drug dealer says: “I used to do boxing, but I haven’t boxed in ages... I’ve had ttwo hernias so I’m quite limited in what I can do exercise-wise.” The rapper also reveals he’s planning to cut back on booze. He says: “My ultimate hangover cure is: ‘Don’t drink in the first place.’ It’s the only one that works for me.” In addition to the release of his new single, the star is currently making two documentaries, including one about cannabis called The Truth About Weed. And he’s determined to focus on both music and TV. He says: “There is going to be a lot more music. I was always writing stuff, and I wish I had kept releasing music, but I wasn‘t releasing for a little while. I want to make sure there is always music there to balance everything else. Music is my outlet – and now I am in a really good place.” By Olivia Buxton G Professor Green was talking at the AOL

He’s admitted he has “a lot of gorgeous female friends” and enjoys attending glittering awards bashes. We look at some of the celebs who have rallied around the rapper after his marriage with Millie Mackintosh ended in May 2016.

‘Iswapped teaching for sexymodelling’

ANNE SAYS A IT’S BOOSTED HER SEX LIFE WITH HUSBAND TERRY

When Anne Atkinson retired as a primary school teacher, she graduated to a much raunchier job

MODEL DREAM

Anne – who’s mum to Matthew, 29, and Andrew, 28, and is a step-grandmother to Terry’s grandchildren aged two to seven – started teaching aged 23.

Anne was less risqué during her 40s

SHE W WAS 63 WHEN SHE MODELLED FOR THIS PHOTO SHOOT

She explains: “My first job was as a secondary school art teacher, but I only did it for a few years as I didn’t enjoy teaching older children. I tried other jobs during my 20s, then after I had children I went into primary teaching aged 45. I enjoyed working with younger children. “But when I reached my early 60s I started thinking about modelling. I’d noticed companies like M&S and Dove were using older models and I thought, ‘I’d like to do that.’ “I’d recently married Terry after splitting from my first partner several years before and he gave me so much confidence, encouraging me to go for it.” Anne had some pictures taken for a portfolio and soon started getting job offers. She recalls: “I did some

catalogue work for clothing companies and loved being in front of the camera.” NEW LEASE OF LIFE

In 2012, Anne took part in a more risqué shoot for a newspaper, posing with just a sheet draped around her. She says: “It was all about looking fab at 60 and I really enjoyed it. But my school wasn’t happy.” So when Anne retired a year later, she decided to fully embrace her new career. She adds: “Without having to worry about my image as a teacher any more, I decided to go for it. My first job was a nude shoot for a photographer’s portfolio; it was quite artistic. I was a bit nervous, but Terry came with me and once I got going I

loved it. Since then, I’ve gone on to do several other shoots for adult websites, including a sexy Mrs Clause and modelling for a corset company.” Anne also had a boob job in November last year. She reveals: “I went from a 34B to a C-cup and had an uplift; it’s made me feel sexier. I also toned up in the gym.” Anne says her friends and family have been supportive of her raunchy new career. She adds: “My sons have accepted it, although they don’t like to know the details. My friends are pleased for me, too.” Now Anne plans to keep supplementing her pension with stripping off. She says: “My dream is to do a Playboy shoot. It’s given me a new lease of life.” By Sian Wilson & Francine Anker CLOSERONLINE.CO.UK

nne Atkinson spent 17 years as a primary school teacher and was used to having to dress conservatively. But once she retired, aged 62, she shed her prim and proper image by becoming a glamour model. The 64-year-old has starred in several saucy shoots and her husband of four years – Terry, 61, who runs a cleaning business – couldn’t be prouder. Size 10 Anne, from Preston, says: “I loved teaching but I’d always wanted to try glamour modelling. I started modelling on the side. I’m a bit of an exhibitionist and the idea of posing for sexy shoots appealed. “Terry is very complimentary and makes me feel good about myself. Now I’ve done lots of nude shoots and it’s really boosted our sex life.”

I’ve been wearing the same perfume for years… I experimented for a while, but YSL Black Opium is absolutely the sexiest smell on the planet – I never wear anything else.

I don’t have a strict skincare routine… and I know it’s terrible but sometimes I don’t take off my make-up before bed. I use Eve Lom cleanser in the shower in the morning, though.

I usually get my nails done… but I’ll happily paint them myself, too – though one hand always looks chaotic. I like shades like Topshop in Pirouette and Essie in Wicked.

Nude lipstick is my favourite… I always like to look like I’ve dipped my mouth in Tippex. My favourite lippie is Fleshpot by MAC – it’s the perfect barely-there shade.

4

I don’t wear much foundation if I’m not working… but if I do I use Charlotte Tilbury Soft Focus Wonder. I assume it’s made from unicorn dust as it makes my skin look so twinkly.

I love shampoo that makes my hair shine… I recently discovered Head & Shoulders and I adore it. It’s great on brunette hair and my locks are looking shinier than ever!

CLAUDIA WINKLEMAN

I’m the world’s worst eyeliner user… but I LOVE it! I like it to look like it’s left over from the night before. My favourite is Lord & Berry as it has a slick and shiny finish.

My brother, Tyler, died four years ago and then, just six weeks later, my mother was sent to prison for fraud. On top of that, my marriage broke down earlier this year. E: What happened to your brother? A: Growing up we were so close and then, at 18, he joined the army. We lost our cousin in the 9/11 attacks, so Tyler went to fight on the frontline in Iraq. He was exposed to some horrendous scenes and developed post-traumatic stress disorder. When he returned home from one tour, his marriage broke down. He went to a really bad place and was taking a lot of medication, both prescribed and not. Tragically, he died in a car crash at the age of 27. E: How did his death affect you? A: Massively. The worst part was hearing my dad sob every morning. I miss Tyler every day but I didn’t see him smile for a year and I have peace knowing he’s no longer in agony. E: Shortly after your brother died, your mum went to prison. What happened? emma’s verdict “It’s clear Austin has had to deal with some tragic experiences and this has led to some self-doubt and insecurity – he needs to increase his selfesteem. Austin would really benefit from grief counselling, where he would be able to explore the feelings he has towards the loss of his brother, and talk about how the loss has affected him. Austin has looked after everyone else’s emotional wellbeing and in doing so has neglected his own.”

austin’s verdict “Talking to Emma has really helped me deal with the events of the past few years. I’ve bottled up my feelings and Emma has helped me realise that I need to acknowledge them – and that it’s OK to lean on other people. I’m going to try to look to the future and when times get tough I’ll remember there are people who can support me.”

veryone knows veggies are a must in any healthy diet, but did you know they could lengthen your life? “There’s plenty of evidence to show that eating a diet that’s high in vegetables may help to reduce the risk of developing many common conditions,” says nutritionist Rick Hay (www.rickhay. co.uk). “Vegetables are high in many different nutrients and fibre. Studies show that eating vegetables can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, digestive problems

and certain types of cancer.” It’s no coincidence that some of the healthiest diets in the world like the Mediterranean and South East Asian are high in vegetables. Chef Antonio Carluccio, who’s written recipe book Vegetables (£25, Quadrille), says: “Vegetables are very important in Italian food culture. Many of the vegetables we eat today encompass the fruits, seeds, roots, flower buds, leaves and stalks of plants – all of them with individual textures, colours, cooking qualities and health benefits. Eat a wide variety of veg to get maximum health benefits.”

The plant pigment chlorophyll (a potent detoxifier) colours green foods such as salad leaves, broccoli and cabbage. Green veg are also high in immune-boosting vitamins B and C, as well as iron, fibre and disease-fighting antioxidants. Make a simple green salad and drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice.

SEAWEED SNACKING You can pick up a packet of seaweed, like dulse, nori and wakame, in any supermarket. Just one daily portion of seaweed will give you a good balance of nutrients (vitamins C and B, iron and zinc). For easy health benefits, add seaweed to sauces, or toast it for a tasty, healthy snack.

EAT THE RAINBOW Bright vegetables like squash, aubergine, carrots and beetroot are naturally high in protective antioxidants including vitamin C, carotenoids, polyphenols, flavonoids and minerals like selenium and zinc. Try a veg-packed ratatouille to get you well on your way to five-a-day.

Faye Brookes e reveal the busy Coronation Street star’s body-confidence secrets

THE MOVES Faye, 29, attempts an hour of exercise every day to maintain her toned size 8 figure. She tries to cram in a workout in the morning and will do skipping, jogging or weights. Faye also does Bikram yoga three times a week to help strengthen her muscles. She explains: “I prefer to exercise in the mornings, and I sleep for eight hours so that I have the energy to work out the next day.”

THE FOODS She may be busy playing Corrie’s Kate Connor, but Faye reveals the work canteen serves up super healthy dishes. She says: “It’s great because they have a salad bar, fresh vegetables and lots of options if you have any intolerances.” Typically, breakfast is scrambled eggs with avocado, while lunch is a veg soup or a tuna salad, and dinner is sweet potato with chicken and rice.

E GAME-CHANGER Faye and her Corrie co-stars are fans of the Fitness Blender app, which offers workouts from Pilates to basic stretches. She says: “We’ll get a break in between filming and do a workout.” G Faye is running the Virgin Money London Marathon for Team Macmillan. Macmillan. org.uk/running

MAKE THE MOST OF g , g q y , guilty of chucking away food. And a new report has shown that, in the UK in 2015, we binned £13 billion worth of edible food – that averages at a staggering £470 per household. But it doesn’t have to be like this, according to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. The chef has devised a whole recipe book based on making delicious meals with the leftover ingredients in your kitchen. “Some of the most satisfying meals of my life have been created from almost nothing,” he says. “You can be just as creative with ingredients you’ve dabbled with already as with freshly-bought items.” Extract from River Cottage Love Your Leftovers by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall (£20, Bloomsbury)

Your blush-free guide to intimate health Your genitals are just a body part, so stop feeling embarrassed and look after your bits

DR CHRISTIAN: It can be a wonder drug when prescribed correctly and has helped many of my patients. Voice your concerns with your GP.

IN THE NEWS… ‘FACEBOOK LURKING MAKES YOU MISERABLE’ A study found that when regular users took a week-long Facebook break, they felt more satisfied with their lives and had increased wellbeing.

IN MY OPINION... Researchers said “lurking” – scanning other people’s Facebook photos and reading the Newsfeed showcasing everyone else’s “perfect” lives – made people feel envious and dissatisfied. When they took a week off, they felt happier. We spend too much time on social media and it can dent self-esteem and cause body image issues, especially in youngsters. It’s a great way to stay in touch, but we have to get the balance right – if it makes you feel bad, log off!

AVOID PERFUMED PRODUCTS Your vagina is self-cleaning, so you don’t need to wash with perfumed or specialist products. In fact, cleaning your vagina too much can cause infections – and that includes douching with water as your vagina has a very delicate pH balance of less than 4.5, and water has a too-high pH of 7. As well as water your period, antibiotics, some body washes, and even having sex can change pH levels. Maintaining the right pH level keeps certain bugs at bay, and if it gets upset you can be prone to thrush or bacterial vaginosis (BV). Just wash outside your vagina with water. Be wary if you’re buying lots of perfumed products to mask a smell – that smell could be sign that something is wrong, so see your doctor.

QUESTION ANY CHANGES People cringe about the word discharge, but it’s completely normal and all women have it. It’s usually clear or white and it keeps your vagina clean, lubricated and infection-free.

It changes in texture during the month, but make sure you know what’s usual for you, then you’ll notice any changes. If there’s a big difference in the smell or colour, talk to your GP. Similarly, changes in your period are normal, but unexplained missed periods must be investigated. This can be caused by stress, weight loss, pregnancy or infections so take a pregnancy test, have a think about your lifestyle and talk to your doctor. Other changes to look out for are unusual bleeding, itching, chaffing, swelling, bumps, pain, burning, stinging when you pee, or pain during sex. Visit your GP as it could be serious.

T COOL STAY Your vagina has lots of sweat glands, so keep it cool and fresh with cotton underwear. Wearing tight underwear or trousers and synthetic fabrics can give you a white discharge and itchiness, as you end up with an overgrowth of the wrong bacteria. At night, going underwear-free is the best option.

DO PELVIC FLOOR EXERCISES To find your pelvic floor muscles, imagine stopping the flow of urine and holding in wind at the same time. Then, three times a day, tighten this area, hold for five seconds, then relax for five seconds. Repeat 10 times. You even can do them on the bus or on the loo! Pelvic floor exercises can help with incontinence and general tone after having a baby and the knock-on impact is that you’ll enjoy sex more.

omen and girls often don’t have a name for their private parts and that’s worrying because if you can’t go to the doctors and say which bit of you hurts, you’re stuck before you’ve started. Let’s get it right – the vagina is the inside bit, the vulva is the outside, and it’s important to be able to say those words. Remember, for us doctors, it’s just another body part, like a toe or a knee.

‘Gluten gave me ulcers and sickness’ Actress Caroline Quentin, 56, talks about having coeliac disease “I was diagnosed with coeliac disease six years ago. I had frequent nausea, mouth ulcers and skin rashes and I often had to rush to the loo… I’d have some pasta and soon afterwards I’d be sick. I’ve changed my diet, avoid anything with gluten and I feel much better.”

HEALTH

should have a test every three years if you’re aged 25-49, or every five years if you’re 50-64 (over 65s only need a screening if they haven’t been screened since aged 50, or have recently had abnormal tests). If you feel nervous, tell your doctor and they can help you relax. It can feel a bit embarrassing, but it shouldn’t hurt. If it does, it could be a sign of vaginismus, where you suffer with vaginal tension, and sex can be difficult too, so mention this to your GP.

BE SAVVY ABOUT STIS

DON’T WAX – IT’S A PERSONAL CHOICE There have been scare stories about being pubic hair-free, but I don’t think it’s a big health concern, it’s just a personal choice. Pubic hair lets the opposite sex know you’re biologically, if not emotionally, y ready to procreate. It also helps distribute pheromones, chemicals thought to attract potential mates. If you want to grow your pubic hair, grow it. If you want to remove it, do that. But ensure it’s your choice – don’t feel like you have to look a certain way.

GO FOR A SCREENING The number of people having cervical screenings is shockingly low, but cervical cancer is preventable. Around 3,000 cases are diagnosed each year. It mainly affects sexually active women aged 30 to 45, so screenings are crucial. Most test results are normal, but around one in 20 women have abnormal cell changes. These mainly go back to normal on their own, but sometimes cells need to be removed, so they can’t become cancerous. You’ll be told what you need to do in your results letter. You

Most women know that chlamydia can be symptom-free but so can gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV. If you have multiple sexual partners, you need to get tested regularly and if you’re in a long-term monogamous relationship and are stopping using condoms, you should both get a full sexual health screening first. STI symptoms to look out for are pain when you pee, itching, burning, tingling, unusual discharge, pain during sex, blisters or sores, bleeding between periods or after sex, and lower abdominal pain. An untreated STI could cause long-term fertility issues or chronic pain.

FORGET DESIGNER VAGINAS Finally, the vulva, lips and clitoris all come in different colours and sizes. Some are wrinkly, some smooth, some have big labia, some small, some are hairy, some aren’t. It’s important mums get that message across. Girls and boys may see genitalia in porn, and it gives them an unrealistic impression. Parents must teach kids that variety is normal and healthy.

ADVICE Our therapist & TV psychologist Emma Kenny is here to make sense of your emotional issues

PUMP-UP YOUR WILLPOWER he chances are, you made your resolutions a few weeks ago, so your willpower may be waning. The most important thing to do if you’re at risk of falling off the wagon, though, is to remind yourself of the reasons you set your goals. Write a list of why you are changing your life for the better and carry it around as a reminder whenever you start to waver. Here are my top tips to help you keep up the good work…

T

‘me myself and I’

HOW TO STICK TO YOUR GOALS WEATHER THE STORM! T Terrible weather can tempt you to swap a run for a night in, but that shouldn’t prevent you from exercising. Find an online workout, use an app, or simply do star jumps in front of the TV! TACKLE STRESS A bad day can eat away at your good intentions, so have a resolution buddy you can call or message to vent. HAVE FUN Most people waver because they are too strict and become overwhelmed by their own expectations. If resolutions are ruining your social life, schedule treats like

socialising and enjoying long lie-ins. BOUNCE BACK Falling off the wagon doesn’t have to mean staying there. If you eat a slice of cake or miss a gym class, see it as a one-off rather than an excuse to give up. BE PREPARE P D Planners are far likelier to stick to their goals, so make a rota for exercising, socialising and preparing food. SHUN THE SABOTEURS Whether you’ve given up alcohol or takeaways, have a watertight response to those trying to lead you astray – and stick to it.

PHOTOS: REX/SHUTTERSTOCK

FIGHT THE FEAR! From time to time, we all find ourselves worrying about things that haven’t happened. “Catastrophe thinking” is really common but, if it isn’t nipped in the bud, it can really impact your life. When a worry hits, instead of allowing it to take over, do something purposeful instead; the washing up or writing a shopping list – feeling in control breaks the worry cycle. Accepting that worry is part of life can also be helpful; tell yourself that these feelings are normal and will pass. Speaking to a friend can help provide perspective and, often, the only way to stop feeling scared is to do the thing that scares you. If you convince yourself you’ll never get an interview for a job you want, apply for jobs anyway and disprove your theory. Finally, try to only worry about things you can change; don’t waste energy on things you have no control over.

Arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, this charmingly offbeat adventure-comedy from director Taika Waititi (who’s next making Thor: r Ragnarok) stars Sam Neill as Hec, who heads into the wilderness when his juvenile delinquent nephew Ricky (Julian Dennison) runs away from home. White (played by Billy Crudup). Jackie has already earned rave reviews in the US, hinting Portman could be about to score her second Oscar after winning with Black Swan in 2011.

TV Q&A

‘Myperfectnight? Cuddleduponthesofa withthefairylightson’ ow does it feel to be back at work [Charley has been on maternity leave since last year after having son Bowie with her Emmerdale co-star Matthew Wolfenden]? It feels great. I’ve been busy since I got back and it’s been nice to get my teeth into something. It was a bit of a shock to the system at first, but I’ve got back into the swing of it quite quickly and it’s been fun. Do you miss Bowie now you’ve returned to Emmerdale? A year is quite a long time to be off so it’s always going to be a bit of an adjustment, but Bowie has actually come in to work with me quite a few times, which has been lovely. We only live 15 minutes from the studio,

H

Debbie retu rns to the Dale...

so he visits when I’m on my lunch break, and if I have a scene out, he comes in too. Bit of an obvious question – is he named after David Bowie? No, we’re not crazy David Bowie fans! We must get asked that about three times a day, but David Bowie died three weeks after we named Bowie, so it was a bit of a weird coincidence. My sister actually came up with the name when I was pregnant. She used to text me suggestions. I like unusual names – her children are called Spike and Elkie. As soon as I heard Bowie, that was the one that stuck in my mind, and Buster [Charley’s first son] really liked it too. So, why is Debbie back in the Dales? She’s been in France with her children and working at a garage for a man called Hugo. She’s on the run having stolen a car that has a lot of money in it, and there are gangsters fter her. That’s all we know so far. s she back for good? Possibly. I definitely think she’ll be around or a while. There’s a lot of stuff to sort out while she’s here, so I’m pretty sure she’s back or the long haul. Debbie’s life is pretty chaotic. Are things calmer in your own home? Calm is not a word I would use! Buster aged six] is extremely full-on, he likes to be heard and has absolutely no volume

Charley Webb, 28, is back on our screens this week as Emmerdale’s feisty mum Debbie Dingle. She talks baby Bowie, avoiding the gym and tying the knot…

control. And Bowie is equally as loud when he shouts. But that’s what having kids is supposed to be about; it’s not meant to be quiet. I’ve met children who are great and really well-behaved – “yes,” “no,” “yes please,” but it would get a little bit boring. How do you stay in shape? Going to the gym is a luxury which doesn’t happen very often. If I have spare time I tend to want to spend it at home with Bowie, because the gym does take a big chunk out of your day. I’ll do weights and sit-ups at home instead, when I can fit it in. A lot of girls at work have really strict exercise routines, but I just do it here and there and as and when. I wouldn’t want to get into a situation where I felt I had to exercise, it puts too much pressure on you. You and Matthew [who plays David Metcalfe in the soap] are engaged. Do you have any plans to tie the knot this year? No, we’re just too busy. It’s not a priority for us. It’s so important to spend time with the kids and, because I’ve just come back to work, I haven’t got time to think about anything like that, so it’s not on the cards. What’s your ideal night like? Cuddled up on the sofa with a massive blanket, in front of the fire with a glass of wine, watching a film with friends. And I’d have my fairy lights on. I love them and we have them absolutely everywhere at home. I don’t like really bright lights. I’m quite fussy and there are times where I’ve been to a restaurant and the light was too bright and I’ve moved tables or even left! I like it to be dim and cosy. MINUTES WITH... he dsomer Murders boys, Neil Dudgeon, 56, and newbie Nick Hendrix, 31, are back on our screens with more mystery and random deaths in the sticks…

I

s Midsomer Murders fun to film? NEIL: We have marvellous fun, especially when we’ve got a good guest cast in. Neil Morrissey was great in the “extreme” Neighbourhood Watch episode, which also had a bit of S&M in it… Nick, have you been pinching yourself a bit being the new boy? NICK: Definitely! This job struggles to get boring. It’s also nice that I’ve been given some lovely outfits to wear. DS Winter [who he plays] is a snappy dresser. You’ve been hailed as “the next Poldark,” with talk of Midsomer being “sexed up”… NICK: Well, this is obviously very flattering but slightly silly, I’m sure. I don’t know what to say. [Nick blushes furiously…] Neil, you took over from John Nettles as the Midsomer main man back in 2011. Was that a life-changing decision? NEIL: I certainly spend more time in Oxfordshire (where Midsomer is filmed). And I get up earlier. Fortunately, I’m not mobbed in the street – and if I’m out and about with Nick it’s usually a case of, “Look at the bloke in his suit, and who’s that fat man next to him?” We’re sad to see the back of Sykes (the Midsomer pooch, who had to retire)… NEIL: Dear old lovely Sykes had reached that age where he was just a bit old to be coming out and doing this sort of thing. We bought him a new bed, a blanket and a bowl with his name on, which he loved. He made a beautiful acceptance speech, and

then weed over the wheel of a Land Rover. Do either of you boys do anything special to look your best on screen? NEIL: I’m pumping millions of pounds into developing a piece of software that makes actors look about 3st lighter than they actually are. I’m getting a lot of interest… As you can see, we’re both tremendously buff. NICK: It’s been an absolute nightmare trying to fit in going to the gym now I’m on set all these hours every day. I turn up to the catering van and I’m like, “I’ll just have the chicken and vegetables, give me some rice cakes.” These suits won’t fit any more! Do either of you have a favourite Midsomer murder? NEIL: One of my favourites was at the beginning of an episode called Dark Rider, where a man is disturbed by a clanking noise on the roof of his castle. He looks down, sees a headless horseman and then falls to his death. The more exotic and eccentric murders, the better! By Hannah Wright Midsomer Murders, Weds, 8pm, ITV

Soap Spotlight! CORONATION STREET Poor Michelle’s lost her baby and is understandably devastated. This week tugs at the heartstrings as she struggles to hold it together, first getting sozzled at the Bistro and proposing a toast to her son, Ruairi – then she storms out. It’s Robert who finds her, dangerously teetering on the edge of a bridge. Overcome with emotion and grief, Michelle leans in for a kiss... Elsewhere, Peter and Nick are still bickering, and Toyah finds out who Leanne’s baby daddy really is. OMG!

DISASTER HITS THE SQUARE

EASTENDERS

We’ve barely got over the traumatic demise of Ronnie and Roxy when ANOTHER disaster hits the Square this week – this time in the form of an “incident.” It’s pretty major stuff, though our lips have been sealed with gaffer tape and we couldn’t possibly reveal what’s going down. It all happens on Monday (23 Jan) and, on Tuesday, the situation descends into chaos with residents forced to deal with the fall-out – oh my…

We all know how deranged Cameron is and, this week (after lots of build-up), it seems the penny finally drops for his missus Leela as well. Still extremely peeved at the matter of “son” Daniel not actually being his biological child, events see Cameron, Leela, Tegan and Courtney heading to the log cabin in the middle of nowhere. Mistake. Needless to say, this week is pretty gripping – including the discovery of a dead body, yikes. Cleo also gets Mac drops some devastating news, and Lisa the L-bomb enjoys a romantic getaway to Mac’s camper van, but he blows everything by accidentally using the L-word, the fool.

CLOSERONLINE.CO.UK

How is Michelle coping? She is really struggling. This loss is so huge; she’s is in a very dark place. What state does Robert find her in when she storms out of the lunch with Steve? Robert is concerned for her safety and Michelle and Stev e grieve to what she is planning to do. gether What happens when she tries to kiss him? It’s one of those moments; it is really the grief that makes her respond in that way - which is difficult for Robert. Will Michelle and Steve get through this? They could but there’s the ticking time-bomb of Leanne’s baby so, after the loss of Ruairi, it’s got an even bigger significance.

and Louise, but more like just Thelma (with lovely hair), Debbie Dingle makes her grand re-appearance on Tuesday in a special hour-long episode. There are no snazzy “welcome home” banners, though, as she’s dramtically on the run, escaping pursuers – and acting pretty darn suspicious. Curses to the fuel tank of her car when she runs out of petrol and is forced to accept a lift from a delightfully eccentric stranger. Fastforward a bit to Cain bursting onto the scene – and then later on when, while Sam is babysitting, some ruffians burst in looking for Debs and demanding dosh by 5pm! Oh, the drama. In less tense (but sad) scenes, Gabby offering to look after Dotty doesn’t bode well and, when Doug and Diane offer to trade places with Laurel, they’re at breaking point when they can’t cope with how bad Ashley has got – and Laurel has to make an incredibly tough decision. Elsewhere, just how long is it going to take Rhona to realise Pierce is a nasty pasty? Imagine how a game of “truth” goes when she confesses she wants to play hide the sausage with Cain? Oh. My. ALL ABOUT CHARLEY… Charley Webb (whose real name is Charlotte) has been playing Debbie Dingle for 15 years, since she was 14-years-old. Acting must run in the family as her older bro Jamie Lomas played Jake Stone in EastEnders and is also Warren Fox in Hollyoaks (he also happens to be Kym Marsh’s ex). In real life, Charley is engaged to her Emmerdale co-star Matthew Wolfenden (David Metcalfe) and they have two children together. Buster (cute name), seven this year, and baby Bowie Grey – who turned one in December and is the real reason Charley has been off our screens.

SCREAM 2 HELLO SIDNEY, REMEMBER ME? SAT 21 JAN, 9PM, W

This sequel to the hugely successful horror is set a year after Ghostface wreaked havoc in a sleepy town (remember that Drew Barrymore scene?). A new murderer is on the loose, and survivors Sidney (Neve Campbell) and Gale (Courteney Cox) attempt to find out who’s behind the bloodletting – and stay alive! Look out for guest stars Jada Pinkett Smith and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN WORKING OF A CLASSIC SAT 21 JAN, 6.40PM, C4

Those tuning in expecting a cute and cuddly Disney adventure, be warned – this is more like Game Of Thrones. Charlize Theron is simply fabulous as evil Queen Ravenna, who wants to devour the beating heart of stepdaughter Snow White (Kristen Stewart) – yum! – because it will grant her eternal beauty. Snow White is having none of it and escapes into the Dark Forest, only to be chased by The Huntsman (hunky Chris Hemsworth). But that’s just the start of the story...

TRAINSPOTTING CHOOSE LIFE SUN 22 JAN,10.05PM,C4

With the sequel just about to hit cinema screens, this is a timely opportunity to see this grim, gross but amazing Brit film from 20 years ago. You should know the drill by now – Ewan McGregor (in the role that made him a household name) stars as Renton, part of a gang of lads constantly on the lash in Edinburgh. With carnage everywhere they go, it’s only a matter of time until something bad happens. Choose life, indeed.

CLOSER MAGAZINE TERMS & CONDITIONS 1. These terms and conditions together with any specific rules displayed or referred to on the relevant page of Closer magazine in respect of a prize draw or competition (a “Prize Draw Notice”) and Bauer’s General Terms and Conditions (available online at http://www.bauerlegal.co.uk/ / competition-terms.html) are the prize draw rules (the “Rules”) that apply to each and every prize draw and/or competition of any nature included in Closer magazine (a “Prize Draw”) unless otherwise expressly stated in the Prize Draw Notice. By entering a Prize Draw, entrants agree to be bound by these Rules. 2. Each Prize Draw is organised by Closer magazine, part of Bauer Consumer Media Limited of registered address Media House, Lynchwood, Peterborough Business Park Peterborough, PE2 6EA (“Bauer”). In the event of a discrepancy between these terms and conditions and the Prize Draw Notice, the Prize Draw Notice shall prevail. 3. Bauer reserves the right to cancel or amend a Prize Draw at any time without prior notice. 4. All Prize Draw entrants must be over 18 years of age at the date of entry and resident in the UK. Proof of age may be required before a prize-winner can claim a prize. The eligibility of any entrant is at the sole discretion of Bauer. Employees and agents of Bauer and its associated companies (including the families of such employees and agents) are not eligible to enter a Prize Draw. Only one entry per person and per household is permitted.

Additional eligibility requirements may apply to a specific Prize Draw, e.g. a valid passport, visas and/or driver’s licence will be required if the Prize Draw’s prize includes travel outside the United Kingdom and/or car hire. 5. Prize Draw entries must be made in accordance with the Rules and must be received by Bauer before the closing date specified in the Prize Draw Notice (the “Closing Date”). Entries made otherwise will be invalid. 6. No payment is necessary to enter a Prize Draw. Unless otherwise stated in the Prize Draw Notice, all Prize Draws are entered by sending an appropriately worded e-mail to the email address specified in the Prize Draw Notice. Any such e-mail must include a postal address to contact you at in connection with the Prize Draw and otherwise must comply with any instructions for submitting such email entry set out in the Prize Draw Notice (for example, to identify which Prize Draw is being entered). Each Prize Draw must be entered by a separate email. Alternative means of entering a Prize Draw – if any – may be set out in the Prize Draw Notice and where there are alternative means of entering a Prize Draw no distinction shall be made between entries received by any means prescribed under the Rules. 7. Prize-winners will (unless specified otherwise in the Prize Draw Notice) be chosen at random by an independent judge from all qualifying entries. In all matters, the decision of the judge(s) shall be final and no

correspondence or discussion shall be entered into. 8. Prize-winners will be notified in writing within 6 weeks of the Closing Date. 9. If a prize-winner fails to respond to correspondence from Bauer and/or fails (for whatever reason) to claim his/her prize within 14 days of receipt of Bauer’s notification, Bauer shall be entitled to select an alternative prize-winner. In such circumstances Bauer shall use reasonable endeavours to notify the alternative prize-winner within nine weeks of the Closing Date. 10. Prize-winners will receive their prize within 6 weeks of notification unless otherwise specified in the Prize Draw Rules. 11. Details of the names of prize-winners can be requested by writing to Closer at Endeavour House, 189 Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2H 8JG, specifying the relevant Prize Draw, provided that such request is received by Bauer within ten weeks of the Closing Date. 12. Every prize is subject to availability and Bauer may substitute any prize for a prize of a similar nature and/or comparable value. There is no cash alternative to any prize and no prize is refundable and/or transferable. 13. Bauer accepts no responsibility or liability for any lost, damaged or incomplete entries and all such entries will be deemed invalid. Proof of despatch shall not be proof of entry. Only entries received in accordance with the Rules will be acceptable. 14. Bauer will not be liable if a prize does not

reach a prize-winner for any reason outside the control of Bauer or if a prize is damaged during delivery. 15. Entries shall not be returned to entrants. 16. Prize-winners agree to take part in any promotional activity requested by Bauer and consent to his/her name, county and photograph being published for the purposes of the Prize Draw and promoting Closer and/or Bauer and its business. 19. Where relevant, all taxes, insurances, transfers, spending money and other expenses (including meals or personal expenses upgrades etc.) are, unless otherwise specifically stated, the sole responsibility of each prize-winner. 20. The terms and conditions of any third party supplier may apply and must be accepted and complied with by a prizewinner to accept the prize. 21. Bauer may vary the terms of, or vary the Prize Draw at any time at its absolute discretion without liability to any entrant or other person. 22. Other than for death or personal injury arising from negligence of Bauer, Bauer hereby excludes (so far as is permitted by law) all liability for any loss, damage, cost and expense, whether direct or indirect, howsoever caused in connection with the Prize Draw or any aspect of the prize. 23. These terms and conditions shall be governed by and construed and performed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, whose courts shall have exclusive jurisdiction to decide any dispute arising under them.

Don’t be too hard on your friends. You may get to feel as though you’re in the right and have the moral high ground (and so on) temporarily. However, if you keep culling people from your life, you will have no one left to care about. Scary but true! For your spoken forecast about your current astrocycle, call 0906 7511 677*

TAURUS 21 APR-21 MAY Your challenge now, if you choose to accept it, is to work through any money issues you currently have. It won’t always be like this but Saturn in your 6th House of Daily Life demands that you keep to an ordered routine. So work harder on getting your life in order. Your future will thank you for it! LEO

24 JUL-23 AUG

It’s as though the brakes have been put on your R&R time. That’s all nonsense, though. In fact, if you feel a little melancholy this week, you should schedule in some Leo time – it’ll enable you to happily roar with people who really get you. Do it now. 24 SEP-23 OCT

You are up against it this week. Your own fears or negative thoughts are the enemy. You are getting a chance to see how much better life goes when you focus on what you want and not what you don’t want. But are you paying attention? If not, watch out! For your spoken forecast about your current astro-cycle, call 0906 7511 677*

SCORPIO 24 OCT-22 NOV If you believe money is the root of all evil, you will repel it. If you don’t think you deserve it, ditto. Notice this week how your money flows. It will teach you about your attitude to cash and what the future holds for you financially, if nothing else changes. For your spoken forecast about your current astrocycle, call 0906 7511 677*

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV-21 DEC Mind how you go this week, especially but not only in your personal life.
