How It All Started
Theideaofamentalhealthconferencewas longonthemindsofthecommunity programsteampriortotheopportunityfora partnershipcomingabout.Itwasabig dreamthatwewantedtostartworkingon. Then,onedayonFacebook,asimplepostby ourpartnerSaraNicoleYogahelpedus achievethisdream.
Duringourmonthsofplanningand meetings,wepouredovereverydetailthat wecouldtomakethisasafeandwelcoming placeforalltoattendandgainknowledge, perspective,andhelpintheareaofmental health.Wewantedtoaddressthingslike stress,anxiety,andcopingskillswhile providingawarmenvironmenttoallwho attended.Wealsowantedtoacknowledge thatnooneisaloneintheirstruggles.We arebettertogether,whenwearegivinga helpinghandandbeingthatshoulderthat ourneighborsneed.

RISEtookplaceonOctober8,2022atPathwayChurchinBurleson,TXasafree andopeninvitationtoallthatwantedtoattendadvertisedtoJohnson,Tarrant, Elliscountiesandalltheneighboringcountieswecouldreach.Itwasfun, exciting,andcertainlyinformativewithallouramazingspeakersandbreakout sessionteachers!
Wehadover100+attendeesinpersonfromJohnson,Tarrant,Ellisandother surroundingcountieswithagesrangingfrom18-61+andwehadevenmoreas theconferencewasalsoshownvirtually.Theattendeeswerewelcomedby Reachstaffandvolunteers,excitingmusic,andlotsofgoodieswerepassedout toeachpersonthatcame!Thegoodieswereallitemsthatassistedwithcoping througheverydayandmentalhealthstrugglessuchas:coloringbooks,sound machines,lavendersachets,andsoforth.Alongwithbagswithourthemelogo, journalandt-shirttoremindeveryoneoftheencouragementwewerewanting toinstillinthem.
RISEwasabletosecuregreatvendorsandresourcetablestocontinuealong withthethemeofencouragementandbeinginthistogether.CooksChildren, TexasHealth,fitnessandwellnessentities,aplantfarm,candles,therapist information,counseling,andthepubliclibraryinBurlesonevenpulledout severalbooksonmentalhealthforpeopletocheckoutforfree!Wealsohad amazingfoodfromBondiBowls,TAPPSInternational,Morgan’sIceCreamand ReadsBBQ.

The Sessions
OurkeynotespeakerswereDr.CrystalCollier,LPCandauthorofthe NeuroWhereAboutsGuide,andRachelHenning,LPC.Bothspeakershad amazingsessionswithgreatinformationandpracticalapplicationsforour attendeesthroughthelensofacounselorandtheirpersonalexperiences.
Dr.Collier’ssessiontopicwastheNeuroscienceofHealthyBrainDevelopment. Shespokeabouthealthydevelopmentofthebrainandhowriskybehavior affectsneurodevelopment.Shealsotouchedonthetopicofbrain-based parentingtoassistparentswithtipsandtechniquesthatcouldbeeasilyapplied toimproveyouthandadultfunctioning.
RachelHenning'ssessiontopicwasManagingEmotionalMayhemwhereshe taughthowtobalanceemotionsandhowtobecomemoreawareofthe connectionsbetweenourthoughts,feelingsandactions.
Wealsohad3otherspeakersChadBenson[PastorofLifegateChurch],Tina Bernard[COO&Co-FounderofSalford&Co.],andLisaBoultinghouse[Founder andCEOoftheCenterforASD]thatspokeontheirexperiencesthroughmental healthstrugglesandhowtheywereandareabletoseethelightontheother side.
BreakoutsessionswereconductedbySantanaWare[TherapeuticArt],Dr. Collier[BrainBasedSkills],SariahLatu[SelfLoveCycle]andLauraMiller[Faith BasedEnneagram].Wehadseveralbreakoutsessionsforalltheattendeesto experienceand,accordingtothereviews,alltheparticipantswenthomewith newskillsandknowledgethatwillbehelpfulandthattheycanapplytotheir everydaylives.

WestartedsupportgroupsforourYRCparticipantslastmonth! Theparticipantshaveenjoyedgettingtogetherwiththeirpeersanddiscussing relatabletopicsinacomfortablesetting.Thegroupisdesignedtobeasafe placetosharefeelings,andtoobtainandprovidesupport,information, reassurance,andencouragement.Itisflexible;flowingwiththeparticipants’ needsandinterests,andprovidesanopportunitytoreducefeelingsofisolation.
Inourpastsupportgroups,wehavediscussedthingslikefears,values,time management,andstress.Notonlyarewetalkingaboutthethingsthat negativelyaffecttheirlives,butwearealsodiscussingpositivespinsonthe topicsandsharingcopingmechanisms.
Afterthesupportgroups,participantshaveaccesstoatutortohelpthemwith homeworkandalsohavetimetogettoknowtheirpeersbetterbysocializing andplayinggames.
Theonlyrequirementofthesupportgroupisthattheteenmustbeenrolledin theYRCprogram.

"With this partnership the Center for ASD was able to provide opportunities to families to relax, have fun, de stress. Our special needs families are constantly on high alert and we were able to provide respite."
"The funding enabled us to provide supplies for people in the community to use their creativity to create tiny works of art. 300 kits were handed out. Our Tiny Art exhibit had 119 pieces of art submitted from all ages. Many of the participants have expressed interest in having more community art shows. One woman expressed great pleasure seeing that other people do similar art to hers. The Tiny Art Party was a great deal of fun.
