A UNIQUE APPROACH TO LEARNING For almost forty years, an objectbased approach to teaching has been a distinguishing feature of Sotheby’s Institute of Art and a cornerstone of its programmes. Students learn through hands-on examination of works of art in galleries, museums and private collections in Europe, the United States and Asia.

AND PRACTITIONERS IN THE ART WORLD The Programmes are taught by highly respected scholars. The combination of expert faculty, visiting professors and specialist lecturers provides students with a breadth of knowledge and experience as well as an opportunity to develop a network of professional relationships. Faculty members offer guidance in both academic and career-related subjects. Teaching styles facilitate a close working relationship with students, and there is frequent contact in the classroom and during office hours. Study visits and seminars take place in smaller groups, and allow for close viewing of artworks and additional discussion.

CONTEXT TRAVEL TO EUROPEAN, AMERICAN AND ASIAN ART CENTRES Many of the Institute’s postgraduate programmes include travel to major art fairs, exhibitions, museums and collections in Europe, the US and Asia, depending upon the program of study. This allows students to see and experience art and objects in their historical context as well as to add regional knowledge of particular areas of study.

ORTUNITY INTERNSHIPS AT SOTHEBY’S

Sotheby’s internships offer the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how an auction house works, how art is managed in a commercial environment and how the auction market relates to the broader world of art business. All full-time students at Sotheby’s Institute are eligible to apply. For MA students, internships commence after completion of second semester. Internships are generally three months duration. There are a limited number of internships and admission is highly selective. Internships are unpaid.

LONDON PROGRAMMES ART BUSINESS London plays a major role in the global art and antiques markets, where dealers trade in British, European, FA C U LT Y American, Asian and Indian art. This is a multi-billion Lain Robertson dollar industry, employing hundreds of thousands of David Bellingham professionals in small and medium-sized businesses as Dr Catherine Morel well as in large enterprises, including auction houses, Professor Henry galleries, investment banks, insurance companies Lydiate and other specialist service suppliers to the market. It does not lead to a business degree but to a degree in the business of art. Europe is home to a number of other important centres for the art market, offering valuable comparisons with the London scene. First-hand knowledge of them is invaluable. Therefore, recent study trips abroad have included the Maastricht TEFAF Art Fair, Art Basel and the FIAC Contemporary Art Fair in Paris.

CONTEMPORARY ART For those who wish to study contemporary art in-depth, this F A C U L T Y programme emphasizes the artwork itself and how we approach and interpret art from 1960 onwards. Graduates 8 September 2008 benefit from the international perspective of the programme and go on to pursue a variety of fascinating careers in the contemporary art market: they open their own galleries; become curators, editors or critics; or are employed in commercial contemporary galleries or public museums throughout the world.

FINE AND DECORATIVE ART This programme is taught from the perspective of an art F A C U L T Y expert rather than an academic art historian. It is based on the curriculum Dr Megan Aldrich developed by Sotheby’s some forty Dr Chantal Brotherton-Ratcliffe years ago to train professionals for Gordon Lang the auction house. It has 4-Week course always been taught by specialists, art June-July, 2008 professionals, curators, and scholars, with an object-based, and often object specific approach that enhances learning and develops expertise regarding the aesthetic and technical merits of a work of art. Case studies in Old Master paintings, modern art, furniture and ceramics from the Renaissance to the present day form the core curriculum, along with the development of professional skills for attributing and cataloguing works of art, culminating in the House Sale Project, which closely mirrors the auction house environment. The defining characteristic of this programme is its frequent and regular visits to museums and galleries, Sotheby’s auction house, and country house collections for first-hand observation and handling of art objects. The visual and hands-on approach, supported by a thorough grounding in materials and techniques, gives a firm foundation for postgraduate research, connoisseurship and the excitement of unraveling the material culture of the past.


PHOTOGRAPHY: CONTEMPORARY AND HISTORICAL This programme offers an in-depth study of photography F A C U L T Y and its significance in modern visual culture. Its focus is the critical analysis of the earliest to the Dr Juliet Hacking most recent photographic experiments. June-July, 2008 A variety of lectures by distinguished guest scholars and experts as well as study visits to museums, art fairs and collections in the UK and abroad are included in the programme. The programme is intended for those interested in careers as specialists in photographic imagery and objects. Graduates go on to pursue diverse careers, often within the burgeoning contemporary photographic gallery network, or pursue other professional positions in the photographic art market.

EAST ASIAN ART The art history of China, Japan and Korea is the focus of this unique programme, which provides art historical instruction in key features and concepts, Dr Anne Farrer encouraging students to make cross-cultural links Julia Hutt in the art history of East Asia. Teaching is object Gordon Lang based and is organized into three areas of study: religious art, decorative art and pictorial art. D AT E S 4-Week course A distinctive aspect of the programme is the June-July, 2008 opportunity to examine art objects closely in handling sessions during study visits to major collections in London and Germany. A longer study-trip to the southern and northeastern Silk Road in Xinjiang, China, visiting Khotan, Niya, Turfan, Bezeklik, Jiaohe, Gaochang, Astana, Dunhuang and Xi’an is also included. FA C U LT Y

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN DECORATIVE ART, DESIGN & CRAFT OF THE TWENTIETH & TWENTY-FIRST CENTURIES This programme combines academic study F A C U L T Y of twentieth century and contemporary decorative arts with an exploration of the Dr Us Darby professional design world. Furniture, ceramics, Elisabeth Bogdan glass, patterns, metalwork, jewelery and dress from the Art Nouveau period to the D AT E S pluralism of the present day are examined 4-Week course in relation to architecture and interiors, and June-July, 2008 wider theoretical and contextual issues. The interrelationship between the fine and decorative arts is a strong theme throughout the programme. The course promotes an object-based methodology and the development of visual, analytical and interpretative skills that are relevant to a range of careers. Visits to museums, houses, dealers, the auction houses, design and craft fairs, together with a study tour to Paris, provide opportunities to study objects first hand, and also to assess the market for twentieth century and contemporary design. Throughout the programme, assignments and contact with practitioners in the field introduce students to aspects of the professional design world.

Designed for those who wish to become Asian art specialists, the programme offers insight into the business of the auction house and gallery practices, and into the academic and museum world. Graduates pursue a variety of professional careers in the public and private sectors of the Asian art field.

TRAVEL

Sotheby’s full-time programmes require travel that may include visits to galleries, special collections, art fairs and art-related events occasionally in other cities or abroad. Travel costs are borne by the students and vary from program to program. In order to facilitate the advance purchase of tickets and reservations, travel costs for each program are calculated and charged for the full academic year, in advance, during registration for the first (fall) semester. If currency fluctuations or other changes result in the actual cost of travel exceeding the fee collected, Sotheby’s Institute will absorb the additional expense. If the cost of travel is less than the fee collected, the difference will be refunded at the end of the academic year.
