PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

RTN. YATIN PAREKH 2020-21 LET ROTARY GROW… My journey as President started with ‘Rotary opens Opportunities’ and is ending with ‘Serve to Change Lives’. My journey as a President was absolutely unique and filled with unprecedented challenges. The pandemic wrecked havoc. It took lives, choked economies and changed our society in countless ways. It was something none of us could have ever visualised. But as they say, challenges are opportunities in disguise. This year, we seized new opportunities to re-imagine what Rotary could be; and we did it with compassion, grace and teamwork. At the beginning of this year, I identified some goals I wanted to meet during my presidency. However, due to these tough times and challenges, our priorities changed. I would like to highlight a few noteworthy projects during my tenure; the Global Grants project under which we provided equipments to the Geriatric Care Centre at Sneha Mandir old-age home, ‘Breath of Life’ our COVID-19 project, provision of computers to Brilliance Computer Academy and building of a toilet block at St Alloysius School at Diwar. We were also able to work on our permanent projects Saksharta, Sahayta, Sudharta and Swacchata(WINS). I am also pleased to mention that the worth of the total projects completed in my tenure, are to the tune of Rs. 100 lakhs. Another proud moment for our Club this year, was the achievement of the RI President citation award.

This year, virtual meetings became the new trend. We were able to get some excellent speakers on board to keep our members engaged. We celebrated Diwali and Christmas night in full swing, but with necessary precautions. These events indeed gave us, wonderful memories to cherish. I would like to thank our honourable DG Sangram Patil and AG Ajay Menon, for their constant support and guidance. I would also like to thank the board members for their positive attitude and innovative suggestions, and all our Club’s past Presidents, charter members and all the Club members for their contributions and for always stepping forward. I would also like to thank first lady Lata Parekh for her motivation and for being my pillar of strength. Very importantly, I would like to thank our Club Secretary Rajiv Shirodkar and Ann Swati. Rajiv and my combination and coordination was fantastic. We never had any difference of opinion and walked through this journey hand-in-hand. Let’s hope, in the coming year we come out victorious in this battle against the pandemic, and things return to normalcy soon. Let’s pray for a brighter future for our Club, the nation, and the world, as a whole. Till then, take care and stay safe.

RI PRESIDENT ELECT’S MESSAGE

RTN. SHEKHAR MEHTA 2021-22 Hello, the movers and shakers of Rotary around the world. You are the movers, and I am Shekhar. Hope you are enjoying this convention. Conventions inspire us as we look back at the year gone by and motivate us for the year ahead. I do hope that the year ahead will be a safe and exciting one for each and every one of us. Membership, friends, continues to be our biggest challenge. For the last 20 years, our membership has been at 1.2 million. Together let us change this. Here is your opportu-nity to make the biggest change in Rotary history as far as membership is concerned. What we have not accomplished in the last 20 years, I challenge you to accomplish in 12 months. Why else have Rotarians spent billions of dollars and volunteer hours over the last 35 years to eradicate polio and serve mankind? Why else have we set up thousands of schools, hundreds of hospitals, provided water in parched villages, brought dignity to people by providing toilets in their homes, given the gift of life to tens of thousands of children by doing their heart surgeries? Rotarians serve to change lives. Today the need to serve has become even more necessary and apparent. As we all serve, we change the lives of not only others; we change our lives, too. Vivekananda, one of India's greatest philosophers, has said “When you help someone, do not think that you are obliging him or her. In fact, it is he or she who is obliging you by giving you an opportunity to give back something to this world from where we have received so much.” Friends, to live for others, to care for others, to serve others and change their lives is the best way to live our own lives. Just as Albert Einstein said, “Only a life lived for others is a

life worthwhile.” And friends, as we go about our service initiatives, our special focus for the forthcoming year will be on empowering girls. It is important that we empower the girls, as we all find that more often than not, the girl is disadvantaged. We will serve all children, but our laser focus will be specially on the girl. There are many issues that the girls face. In different parts of the world there are different issues, and you will ensure that we try to mitigate the disadvantage of the girl that they may have. Dear change-makers: Ending polio, fighting COVID, working on large, impactful projects, and increasing our membership to a never-before 1.3 million — the task ahead is challenging. And that should excite you. Rotarians love challenges. A ship is safe in the harbor, but that is not what ships are meant for. They need to go out in the high seas. Life, my friends, dear change-makers, is about adventure and not maintenance. Let me end by this poem that I have written: The biggest gift we are given is the power to touch a life To change, To make a difference, In the circle of life. If we can reach out With our hands, heart and soul The magic will begin to happen, As the wheel begins to roll ... Let us all turn the wheel together So that all humanity thrives We have the power and the magic At this moment, I urge you, wherever you are seated around the world, put your hand on your heart and pledge with me: WE HAVE THE POWER AND THE MAGIC TO SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR ELECT’S MESSAGE

RTN. GAURISH M. DHOND 2021-22 (3170) Dear Change Makers of 21/22, Greetings to each one of you! As we stand on the cusp of a new Rotary Year, let us take a moment to congratulate the Club, District and World Leaders for handling a pandemic year effectively by following the motto - "Rotary Opens Opportunities". Their path breaking community work during this once in a lifetime pandemic has shown that Rotarians are always there when there is an Opportunity to Serve. We, the Change Makers, will continue this tradition by committing ourselves to "Serve to Change Lives". Our World leader Rtn. Shekhar Mehta has led his life by following a golden rule - "Service is the rent we pay for living on this planet" and it is this guiding principle that will help us make an impact in the communities around us this year. RI Director Rtn. Dr. Mahesh Kotbagi who is responsible for our zone has urged RID 3170 Rotarians to continue breaking records. At RID 3170, our primary focus from Day 1 will be the mantra "Each One, Bring One" so that we can build on our membership strength. Let's start this year with 100% retention so that our growth is qualitative and quantitative. Our District is already the 5th largest district in the Rotary World and I am confident that, with your efforts, this year we will become the No. 1 District in the world! The Rotary World moved from physical meetings to virtual meetings during the last couple of months. If each Change Maker President, Secretary and Club Member spreads the word on Vaccinations, we will soon move back to a normal

world where we meet and indulge in Fellowship. Each Club in our district should become ambassadors of this message and take it to every stratum of the society. The Covid related projects will continue and will have my full support. The thrust areas for this year are:a) Empowering Women b) Vision for All c) Support Health Care d) Blood Banks / Blood Donations e) Saving Lives f) Public Image of Rotary g) Plant Fruit bearing trees. These areas are close to my heart and let us make meaningful impacts in this space. Our District team has planned meticulously for this to be a path breaking year and we will achieve installations are a moment to celebrate a successful past, dynamic present and a glorious future. SIGNATURE PROJECTS SAHAYATA Sahayata Home care Nursing school is a permanent project of RC Panaji Mid-town in partnership with Matruchhaya Trust & corporations supporting the school through Corporate social responsibility (CSR). With world's largest population of youth residing in India, it is very challenging to create right kind of skills among youth to get gainfully employed. The challenge is more accentuated in case of weaker sections of community and women with limited educational qualifications. This has created a large number of youth (specially girls) who are bereft of high school education & are unemployed due to unavailability of opportunities. As a result, they continue to earn low income & live in poverty. On the other hand, with economic development & increase in life expectancy, today there are more than 100 million senior citizens in India. A majority of them need assistance in their daily chores. Home Care Attendants trained at Sahayata are expected to serve these senior citizens & earn a dignified living. Sahayata is a 100% charity school & youth are trained free of cost. Besides Nursing subjects, youth learn about Personal Finance, Communication Skill, etc so as to be empowered citizens. The school has been Training youth in the field of home care nursing since January 2015. Till the end of June2020, about 140 students have been trained in home care nursing. The coaching includes 3 months of practical training at Goa Medical College Hospital. Sahayata Home care Nursing school faced a challenging year in 2020-21. With Covid 19 Pandemic raging, in March & April 2020, the government was forced to declare a lockdown. This disrupted the admission process for the 11th batch starting from July 2020. In view of the safety of students & staff of Sahayata, it was decided to put the activities of school on hold. Only after partial lockdown was lifted in November 2020, it was decided to call for application & prepare for admissions to 12th batch starting in January 2021. The school received good response for admissions & a total of 12 students were selected. On 20 January 2021, keeping in mind the government guidelines for covid, the school started its classes. On behalf of RCPMT, Club Secretary Rtn Rajiv Shirodkar graced the occasion. For the next 3 months, with strict adherence to social distancing, the students & staff completed their academic training. However, by April, the pandemic had created second wave & the government again declared a lockdown. The students are currently awaiting practical training. Also the admissions for 12th batch starting from July 2021 has been kept in abeyance.

SIGNATURE PROJECTS SUDHARTA SUDHARATA, the most acclaimed project of our club has completed over two decades of dedicated service. Started in 1999, under Children Opportunity Grant from the Rotary Foundation, this project aimed at managing the deformed and crippled children by surgical means. These deprived children from poor socioeconomic part of the society are being treated not only by surgery but also are provided with orthotic and prosthetic devices. Full treatment and rehabilitation is being taken care of. Most of these children have been suffering from Poliomyelitis, Cerebral Palsy, Congenital deformities and quite a few have post trauma deformities. So far we have managed to treat and rehabilitate over 350 children and conducted over 700 surgeries. The children who were infants in the begining of their treatment are now full grown adults. One of the fruits of Sudharta is that amongst the patients there are achievers. One girl has successfully completed her medical degree and a post graduate diploma. Another girl is a practicing advocate. Another one is a assistant to chartered accountant. A boy represented the country in paraolympics in swimming and archery. Apart from these achievers almost all have completed their secondary education or have taken vocational training. This is due to the fact that the deformities could be overcome. They are now gainfully employed and are having their own means of livelyhood. These girls with disabilities and deformities have a lot of difficulty in getting married. After having been treated and recovered from their handicaps, almost all have been married and are now taking care of their children. Wonder what these unfortunate children would have been today, had the Rotary not effected their treatment. Mostly these children grow up to be a burden on their parents and the society. They are not able to pursue proper education due to the difficulty nin their ambulation. Transportation to the educational institution becomes a challenge to the parents. Hence they can hardly manage to sustain their existance. We have managed to treat crawling patients to be erect and walk on their two legs. This restores their confidence and are then able to undertake some emplyment. Citing a case, Ayesha, 6 years of age , presented with bow legs on both sides. Difficulty in running and was lagging behind in her school in all activities. Following deformity correction by Ilizarov methodology, she was able to run and take part in all her school activities. She is the goalkeeper of the football team of her school. If not for our timely intervention, her bow legs would have progressed and she would be permanently disabled.

GLOBAL GRANT PROJECT Global Grant Project Gg2001147: Snehamandir- Geriatric Care Centre equipment Snehamandir is a charitable organization which provides home for senior citizens in the dusk of their life so that they can live a life with dignity. Snehamandir complex consists of cottages & geriatric care centres. The cottages provide residential accommodation for 36 senior citizens who care capable of performing their day-to-day activities needed for living a quality life. The Geriatric care centres provides residential accommodation to 51 senior citizens who need support to do their day-to-day activities. In view of the demand for geriatric care, Snehamandir has decided to build one more geriatric care centre to accommodate 30 senior citizens. This proposed global grant will be used to provide Snehamandir with Furniture & allied equipment required for the geriatric care centre.

India has made large strides in health care in recent past. The life expectancy has increased rapidly in last few decades. There are now more than 100 million people above the age of 60 years in India. Most of the senior citizens, beyond a point in age, require support & geriatric care for their day-to-day life. With rapid social changes in India, the families in India are now nuclear with fewer members as compared to earlier large joint families. With economic development in India, the younger generation in the family needs to sometimes relocate to place of work which is away from the family. Similarly, with husband & wife working, much as they would like, they are not able to take care of the senior citizens at home due to their work responsibilities. The proposed geriatric care centre, to some extent, will help the community in resolving above issues. The project will benefit the senior citizens in need of geriatric care as also help their family members in relieving them of the worries of how to attend to the senior citizens in the families.

The project has been completed as per following timelines: Ÿ

LOVE FOR DOGS When I was asked to write an article for our club magazine, it didn't take me long to decide on the topic that is so close to my heart... Love for dogs. I was born and brought up in a small village - Nerul, and my only friends in my growing up days were our pet dogs. They were and are my therapy to a happy ME. With the current pandemic, life has become more stressful and has affected all sections of society both

psychologically and socially. People are at a risk of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms of distress. Social distancing and security measures have affected relationships among people and their perception of empathy toward others. In such testing times, it's important to have a positive attitude and to shift focus on some relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga.

ARTICLE If you're among those who has always wanted to keep a pet, then this a good time to consider. Owning a pet is beneficial as it provides balance, emotional well-being, and unconditional love. It is also a great pleasure to spend time in the company of these furry creatures. Dogs provide people with meaningful social support, improve physical and psychological state, increase the level of happiness and decrease stress. Pets are also known to enhance mood and to reduce stress and anxiety levels. Pets also help to control blood pressure and also helps reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels. While exercising with your pets keeps you fit and active, it's also acts as an antidote for loneliness. If you are considering bringing a canine companion into your life, think seriously about the commitment that being a responsible dog owner entail. Before deciding that a dog is right for you, make an honest assessment: are you ready for the financial, emotional, and time commitment owning a dog requires? Think about the type of dog that will best suit your lifestyle. Evaluate all aspects of your family's life - hobbies, activities, personalities - before choosing a breed and do consider our Indies as an option. Certain breeds are a complete NO to Goan hot and humid climate. Dogs live an average of 10 years, during which point you can get married, your job can take you somewhere else, you can have a child and u will grow older. Physically you might not be able to keep pace with the activity levels of your dog. If you cannot commit to a dog saying, “I will treat the dog as I would treat any other family member” then don't get one. For you it might be just a part of your life but for that dog, you become his whole life. That dog depends on you for all his physical and mental needs for his entire life span. We have seen so many dogs getting abandoned due to some most silly reasons. Abandonment is abandonment. There can't be any justification to that. Whatever crisis u might be in, ask yourself one question - Will I abandoned my child now? When that answer is NO, then how can you abandon a dog? Like humans, dogs also show signs of emotional stress associated with abandonment and undergo trauma and depression. They have trust issues and the worst is they don't even know what's going on and what was their fault. They wait for their family members to come back and take them back to their abode... Sadly it doesn't happen. While owning a pet can be absolutely rewarding experience, it does come with its share of responsibilities, commitment and your duties towards your pet. Take the plunge only if you are 100 percent sure of it and trust me, you will never regret. Ann Sweta Siddha Sardessai

My Journey in The Art of Living With a presence in 156 countries, The Art of Living (AOL) is a non-profit, educational, and humanitarian organisation founded in 1981 by the world-renowned humanitarian and spiritual leader, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. All its programs are guided by his philosophy, “Unless we have a stress-free mind and a violencefree society, we cannot achieve world peace.” As an organisation, we offer numerous, highly effective educational and self-development programs and tools aimed towards eliminating stress. As a community, we attract people from all walks of life. With 57 courses for all age groups, starting with 7-year-olds, we provide tools that help individuals foster a profound sense of inner peace, happiness, and overall well-being. The programs include breathing techniques, meditation, yoga, and practical wisdom for daily living which have helped millions around the world in transforming their lives. I completed my first AOL course in 2003 and it changed my life. I began by practising Sudarshan Kriya regularly. I attend the

Advanced Meditation Silence program every year. I've also attended many other courses like Sahaj Samadhi, DSN, Sri Sri Yoga, Shakti Kriya, Vigyan Bhairav, Sanyam, and Blessings progamme. Sadhna and Kriya are now an integral part of my daily routine. Sudarshan Kriya is the heart of AOL. It is a technique that brings relaxation to your mind while also rejuvenating the brain cells. It flushes away toxins from the body and helps in improving memory and concentration. The benefits need to be personally experienced to understand the full impact of it. From the time I've been in AOL, I have held different posts in the Goa AOL Chapter. I have been actively involved in the management and organisation of various courses, events and satsangs. I am currently the Chairman of the AOL Goa Apex body, and Finance head of the Vaidik Dharma Saunstha (VDS), Goa Chapter. My husband Yatin was the past Chairman of the Goa Apex body. We have organised the Vigyan Bhairav event, along with a Rudra Puja

mental strength and immunity, and allowed me to take care of my family members during their quarantine period.

In Goa, we have 66 trained teachers teaching 25 different types of weekly and monthly courses across Goa. We also organise weekly Satsangs .

As someone who has followed the AOL for nearly two decades now, I have personally experienced the difference it has bought to my mental frame of mind and lifestyle. One of the key principles given to us by Gurudev is to perform Sadhna, Seva, and Satsang with a smile. This is my mantra for life. I wouldn't have thought that these programs would be such an integral part of my life, with selfsatisfaction, inner peace, calm, and happiness forming the basis of my lifestyle.

When the pandemic hit the country in 2020, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar pledged that the AOL would do everything it could to save each life. This galvanised the organisation's focus on mental health and relief distribution during the first wave of the pandemic. The #IStandWithHumanity initiative was launched in April 2020 to provide meals and relief materials to migrant labourers. Online courses that were accessible to all were started and daily meditations with Gurudev were streamed LIVE on YouTube twice daily. To ease a world that was suffering, we began virtual Satsangs and started Poojas, chantings, and the learning of Stotras under VDS, which has benefited people. I personally participated in online Poojas, learn Strotas, and chantings such as the Vishnu Sahasranaam, and attended a few courses, which helped me maintain a calm and engaged mind. I've experienced the power of Sadhna every day and was able to serve others during these trying times.

“The Art of Living is more of a principle, a philosophy of living life to its fullest. It is more a movement than an organization. Its core value is to find peace within oneself and to unite people in our society – of different cultures, traditions, religions, nationalities; and thus reminding us all that we have one goal to uplift human life everywhere." - Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. First lady Ann Lata Yatin Parekh

Our immunity booster kit, also proved to be very effective. We distributed these kits to various organisations, local COVID-19 warriors and other people in need. We also distributed it to the health department and multiple police stations. When the second wave wreaked devastation, #IAHVCovidCare was implemented to provide critical care and emergency medical services. Mission Zindagi, an online service initiative portal, provided real time details on the availability of hospital beds, ambulances, oxygen, and immunity boosters all over India. We also provided doctors for consultation online 24x7. Gurudev also announced three special free online courses aimed at helping people relieve their distress, recover from isolation, and boost immunity. The first course was the Immunity Enhancement Program which is aimed at strengthening our immunity through meditation, yoga, and breathing. The next was our Covid Care Support to help COVID-19 patients who under home isolation to build up strength and recover faster. The third course provided Post-COVID-19 Rehabilitation for speedy recovery after completing the isolation period and testing negative. We've started Special Immunity building courses for kids as a precautionary measure for the third wave. The pandemic has affected my household twice in the past year. My family, during these times, has genuinely experienced the power of meditation, Sadhna, and the immunity kits. It gave me the

EDITOR’S MESSAGE

RTN. SANDEEP NADKARNI 2020-21

Aim to be the best YOU can be . When you have done it you’ll be a winner always. Friends, Rotary is a wonderful movement and to serve through this organization is really an experience. It was really a honour when President Yatin asked me to be the Magazine Editor for 2020-21. The Covid-19 Pandemic came calling in the month of March 2021 and the periods of lockdowns followed. In the shadow of this Pandemic, our Club had a virtual installation of the President with a fellowship experienced of an unique nature. Fellowship hamper was delivered to all the members and everyone enjoyed a good fellowship post witnessing the Installation Ceremony. Our Club in addition to the signature projects of Sudharta,

Saksharta and Sahayata did a lot of activities to help the Covid warriors. Masks, shields, sanitizers, etc were supplied to the Covid Warriors. Various community projects like sanitary block at Divar, sanitary block in canacona, etc were envisaged and implemented with precision. As the situation eased Diwali night and Christmas night were arranged for the members and their familes. The second wave of Pandemic was really a shocker. The infections and deaths increased alarmingly and our Club gave a helping hand in giving aid to the front line warriors and also to the patients at large helping in whatever way it was possible. Oxygen concentrators were bought and supplied wherever necessary to the Patients when oxygen supply became extigent. Thus at the end of the Rotary Year, President Yatin and his team can rest assured that he had done a lot for the community. I put down my pen for the second time as the Editor and envisage that the flag of our Club will always fly high in all the avenues of service. “Motivation gets you started. Habit keeps you going. The Habit of Rotary will always keep us moving”
