Sources of Light Margaret McMullan Recommended by Rebecca Kolb Children’s Room Librarian When Sam moves to Jackson, Mississippi, she encounters a world very different from the one she left in Pennsylvania. The year is 1962, and Sam and her mother, an art professor, find themselves at the center of the struggle for civil rights. Sam takes pictures of a sit-in and uses her camera to try to understand the discrimination she sees all around her. Can she find a source of light amid all the hate? This novel, perfect for middle and high school students, shows the 1960s South from new perspective and offers an honest glimpse at both sides of the Civil Rights movement.

Career Makeover Tips for the New Year!

Whether you’re unemployed, underemployed or transitioning to a different career, 2013 can be your opportunity for a fresh start! Begin with these helpful strategies:

Craft a vision...

Join a networking group...

You are the CEO of you. Think of your strengths and passions. When do you feel the most effective? What are your knowledge, skills and abilities? This way of thinking will help you create a focused and targeted career roadmap. The more you are driven by your interests, the more you will persevere.

such as Career . . . Encore! There is strength in numbers. Meet other job seekers every month and share ideas, experiences and connections.

Create an action plan... Set long and short term goals toward your vision. Each goal can then be broken down into manageable, weekly and monthly tasks. Schedule a Career Coaching appointment in the Business and Job Center for help creating your action plan.

Work smarter not harder... by spending time on job-search activities in proportion to how productive they are. For example, 50 percent or more of jobseekers find jobs through networking opportunities not sitting behind a computer!

Get organized.... Use the Business and Job Center as your office away from home. You have access to various workforce development resources, and you will be encouraged by the friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Plan some fun time... to take care of yourself. Remember to eat well, exercise, get a good night’s sleep and finally, do or say one nice thing for someone you know each day! This is called “paying it forward.”
