Lord our God, speak to us. Help us to know you. Amen.

PRAY • Ask the children to quiet themselves for prayer. Remind them that Jesus is with us as we pray. • Read Psalm 111:2, 9 aloud. • Lead the opening prayer and invite the children to echo each phrase after you. Respond “Amen” together. • Close with the Sign of the Cross.

The Bible has many stories of people who helped others get ready for Jesus.

DISCOVER Purpose: To discover what the children may already know about God’s people’s need for a special leader • Invite volunteers to share what their families do to get ready when visitors are coming. • Ask the children to describe what the family in the photograph is doing together. Reading the Bible together. • Tell the children that the Bible tells many stories of people getting ready for Jesus. • Ask: Why were the people waiting for Jesus? Tell the children they will learn the answer in this chapter.

Proclaiming the Gospel. Proclaiming the Bible provides an excellent opportunity to instruct the children in the posture and responses we use during Mass. Have the children stand when the Gospel is being read aloud. Reader: “A reading from the Holy Gospel according to . . .” Response: “Glory to you, Lord.” Reader: Reads Gospel. “The gospel of the Lord.” Response: “Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.”
