We welcome Bradford “Brady” Groves as the new president of the Foundation. He replaces Pam Siegenthaler, who retired in July after sixteen years of service. Brady has spent most of his career in the area and comes to the Foundation with more than twenty-five years of experience in management, finance, sales and marketing, as well as human resources. Prior to joining the Foundation, Brady worked in sales and marketing for MedCentral WorkAble and as manager of its Health and Fitness Center. He worked closely with the community and local businesses to increase membership and build their many programs. A native of Mansfield, Brady Groves graduated from Mansfield City Schools. He holds a BS in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University and received his MBA from Ashland University.

We look to Brady to maintain the stability the Foundation has exhibited over the past sixty-five years, and to support its mission to improve and enhance the quality of life in Richland County through strategic philanthropy and community leadership. As a result of an investment philosophy focused on long-term growth, the Foundation increased its assets to a record high of $82 million during 2010, even as the national economy continued to recover. As we grow, our strategic plan challenges us to maintain effective donor relationships by showing the community how flexible Foundation assets can be in helping a family’s philanthropic investment meet the current and emerging needs of our community. By adding a proactive component to our grant making process, we are poised for the future in providing community leadership through capacity building opportunities for local nonprofit organizations and supporting needs that have the greatest impact. I believe stability and continuity are hallmarks of a quality organization; these characteristics were never more evident than during the transition from one executive to another. I want to recognize and thank Doug Freer for assuming the role of interim president during this time and the way he and the staff seamlessly executed the day-today activities of the organization. As we honor the vision of our founders, established sixty-five years ago, we are ready to address the changing philanthropic needs of the generations ahead.

As we celebrate 65 years of giving by thousands of local citizens, we are grateful to those who helped build a permanent community endowment, the Richland County Foundation. On the pages of this annual report you will see faces of caring donors, volunteers, and people helped by their generosity. It is through them that we discover the heart of our community. Inspired beginnings Our story is one of generosity and a vision for our community. The Richland County Foundation was founded in 1945 by seven local businessmen who were inspired by a woman philanthropist, Anna Scattergood. In 1936 she had left a generous gift to the Humane Society to support the poor and the elderly, and our founders could see the difference her gift was making to help local people in need. Under the leadership of D. Osborne Meese, and using The Cleveland Foundation as their model, they formed the Richland County Foundation as a way to pool charitable resources under one roof for the benefit of all our citizens.

Today, the Richland County Foundation holds $82 million in assets and is home to more than 300 charitable funds serving a wide range of charitable needs for education; children, youth, and families; health and human services; economic development; arts and culture; and protecting the environment.

Foundation 5

Improving the quality of life right here at home Partnerships with other charitable organizations, educational institutions, and local government have strengthened our community. The Foundation provides local knowledge and leadership to bring people together and, with grants exceeding $54 million since 1945, has helped and continues to help in the following ways. • Better education for youth in our schools with teacher grants and programs for at-risk youth; preparing students for college or advanced workforce training, undergraduate college scholarships, and investing in our local college campuses. • Developmental and recreational programs for children, youth, and families, including after-school programs, Summertime Kids, and programs for the disabled at Raemelton Therapeutic Equestrian Center and Richland Newhope Industries. • Improved medical care through our many health organizations, including The Center, Hospice of North Central Ohio, MedCentral Health System, The Rehab Center, and Third Street Health Services. • Emergency services through Catholic Charities, The Domestic Violence Shelter, Harmony House, the American Red Cross, and The Salvation Army. • Support for places that help expand our hearts and minds at Kingwood Center, Malabar Farm, Mansfield Art Center, Mansfield Community Playhouse, Renaissance Theatre, and our many museums and libraries.

Overall, we help support nearly 100 organizations that provide services in Richland County to improve the quality of life for each and every one of us.

Faces of the Local citizens from all walks of life, working together to make a difference.

Building community endowment The community foundation provides financial support to help meet local needs with gifts from $100 to more than $1 million received over many years. What donors have in common is a desire to give back to the place they call home. Gifts of today and gifts from long ago are making a difference now and are providing for our future. How are community foundations different from other local charitable organizations? Community foundations are built on the concept of permanence and can be thought of as our community’s savings account. When gifts are endowed (put into savings), the original amount of the gift remains intact and is invested to grow over time. The earnings of these endowed funds are used to make grants to areas of need in our community.

generations to come. Establishing a special fund or specifying other types of charitable gifts through the Foundation gives them convenient, personalized service, knowledge of the community, and financial oversight to ensure their gift will have the greatest impact. Whether their gifts support our broad mission or are directed to their favorite charities or causes, our community is strengthened by their generosity and commitment.

Local leadership We are governed by a volunteer board of trustees that represent a diverse group of leaders dedicated to the mission of the Foundation. Over our 65-year history we have earned a reputation for accountability; prudent, diversified investment of donors’ gifts; knowledge of the community; and a professional staff.

Supporting local philanthropy Many people never consider themselves philanthropists; they are not aware that by joining with others in the community to support their favorite causes or charities they can make an impact for

Historic donor photos (black and white): J.C. Gorman. The Gorman Fund was established in 1971 as an endowed, donor advised fund. The Gorman family continues to suggest grants from their family fund. Ruth and Ralph Lutz established several endowed, designated funds in 1997 to support a wide range of needs, including mentally and physically handicapped children, health care, the elderly, youth, and the performing arts. The Esther Black Fund was established as part of her estate as an endowed fund designated to support a number of her favorite charities in Richland County. Transparency and accountability It has become increasingly important to be engaged in practices that create transparency and accountability. The Richland County Foundation is certified as complying with the National Standards for Community Foundations. We have voluntarily adopted many policies and procedures to guarantee that we conduct business not only legally, but also ethically.

Here today and for the future Richland County Foundation is the ninth largest community foundation in Ohio. Out of 770 community foundations nationwide, Richland County Foundation is 106th in size, uncommon for a community of our size. As we grow and plan for the future, we remain true to our message that we are here “For good. For ever.

2010 was a year of transition and growth for the Foundation. While maintaining a philosophy of long-term investment and stability, assets grew to an all-time high; Pam Siegenthaler retired as President after 16 years of creating a strong foundation for the future; and strong support for education continued as reflected in our grantmaking and scholarship awards.

$82,722,040 in total assets As of December 31, 2010 $3,017,723 in grants $54 million granted since 1945 Grants awarded during our 65-year history have made a significant impact toward our mission to improve the quality of life in Richland County. $365,500 in college scholarships 429 undergraduate scholarships were awarded to Richland County students to help in their goal to attain higher education. $1,398,580 in gifts A total of 1,676 gifts from individuals and families were made in memory of loved ones, to support a special fund, to establish new funds and charitable gift annuities, or as end-of-life gifts.

Retirement of Pamela H. Siegenthaler After 16 years serving as president of the Foundation and nine years’ prior service on the Board, Pam retired in July.

City swimming pools opened for the summer with $97,000 in gifts Local businessman Dick Taylor brought together other Foundation donors and local businesses to raise the $97,000 needed to open the city swimming pools for the summer. 10-year education initiative Succeed and Prosper through Education –Ashland, Richland, and Crawford (SPARC) was awarded $100,000 for the next three years to support their operations. The 10-year goal is to improve the flow from regional high school graduates to college or advanced workforce training and to increase kindergarten students’ pre-reading skills.

Ethics and accountability training for nonprofits In February, the Foundation sponsored “Standards for Excellence” through the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations. It was the third session offered in the last two years as part of our strategic plan to help nonprofits become more effective and financially stable. Six participants qualified for $2,500 grants to build capacity within their organizations.

Four new funds established Three scholarship funds and one donor advised fund were established during 2010. The Joseph T. “Jep” Bloor Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by his brother Bill in his memory; The Betty J. Horner Scholarship Fund was established as part of her estate; The David S. McVicker Scholarship Fund was established by his wife, Elsie M. McVicker, in his memory; and The Dr. J. Bruce and Nancy L. Jackson Fund was established by Dr. Jackson and his wife, Nancy, as a donor advised fund.

Each year the Foundation awards grants for a broad range of program areas, including Education; Arts & Culture; Health Services; Children, Youth & Families; Community Services; Human Services; Economic Development; and the Environment. Within each of these areas, grants are awarded in the following ways: Competitive Community Grants are supported by the Foundation’s unrestricted and field of interest funds. General community grants are awarded six times each year. Grants to nonprofit organizations that provide direct emergency assistance to individuals and families are awarded semi-annually. Special grantmaking initiatives with annual grant programs include Summertime Kids (STK), Teacher Assistance Program (TAP), Connections, and The Women’s Fund. Grant application guidelines and due dates are available on our website at www.rcfoundation.org. Designated Grants ensure long-term annual support to nonprofit organizations and are made from funds established and directed by donors to support one or more specific organizations. Donor Advised Grants are made through suggestions from individuals, families, or organizations who have established donor advised funds at the Foundation. Following guidelines established by the Board of Trustees, donors may suggest grants to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations both locally and throughout the United States. College Scholarships are awarded to Richland County undergraduate students who attend an accredited college or university on a full-time basis, demonstrate a minimum grade-point average, and show financial need. Grants are made from scholarship funds and unrestricted funds approved by the Board of Trustees.

Giving through the Richland County Foundation is an easy way to support one or many charities or charitable causes under one roof. Whether your gift is a single contribution in memory or honor of a friend or loved one, or to establish a new fund, we want to provide you with opportunities to make the greatest impact.

Personalized service. We make giving easy and effective, accepting a wide variety of gifts and providing donors with a number of charitable options. You can contribute cash, appreciated stocks, or other marketable assets. Options include establishing a fund in your name or the name of a loved one. In most cases, your gift through the community foundation qualifies for maximum tax advantages. Local expertise. Our professional staff has in-depth understanding of the issues, opportunities, and resources that shape our community. They monitor all areas of community need—including human services, education, health care, the arts, economic development, and protecting the environment.

For good. For ever.®

Community leadership. We invest in the long term and bring people and organizations together, convening diverse voices to address local issues and opportunities. Our business is building community. Legacy and stability. Donors who endow their gifts can make a difference in our community during their lifetime and, at the same time, provide a gift that lasts forever. When you establish an endowed fund, grants will continue to be made after your lifetime so that your charitable wishes are preserved, even if an organization receiving grants ceases to exist in the future. Leaders of a nonprofit organization may also look to the community foundation to hold their organization’s endowment. They benefit from the foundation’s asset management. An agency endowment fund can assure a constant source of funding, the ability to respond to emergencies, and to plan for the future.

Giving There are many ways to give through the Foundation to support the community needs that are most important to you. Each individual, family, or organization we work with has unique charitable interests . . . and unique financial circumstances. We help you make the most of both, so you receive the greatest return on your community investment.

Establish a fund. You can establish a charitable fund with a minimum gift of $10,000 to support the community endowment or to one or more of your favorite charities or charitable interests. Contribute to an existing fund. Gifts to Connections, The Women’s Fund, Summertime Kids, Teacher Assistance Program, College Scholarships, or any of over 300 funds. Establish a Foundation Fellowship. Fellowships can be started with gifts of $1,000 and support the community endowment.

23

Join the Legacy Society. Become a member by making your wishes known that you have made plans to leave an end-of-life gift to the Foundation. Create a charitable gift annuity. A minimum gift to charity of $10,000 will provide you income from your gift during your lifetime. Make a gift of life insurance. A gift of life insurance can be made by making the Foundation the beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Legacy Society The Legacy Society was created by the Board of Trustees to recognize individuals who have made plans to leave a gift to this community in partnership with the Richland County Foundation. Donors may create a lasting legacy by making a gift through their estate plans by including the Foundation in their will, as a future beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan or IRA, through an insurance policy, remainder trust, Charitable Gift Annuity, or other similar planned gift. The Richland County Foundation acknowledges the following generous people who have planned a legacy to their community through gifts that will eventually come to the Foundation for the benefit of others:

The Foundation works with professional advisors to assist in the charitable giving process. Advisors can recommend creative solutions that offer maximum tax advantages. The Foundation staff can help provide giving options that can meet your charitable interests.

Unrestricted Funds offer the broadest options for charitable giving. They are the lifeblood of the community foundation and address ever-changing community needs—including future needs that often cannot be anticipated at the time your gift is made. Field of Interest Funds give you the opportunity to support specific interests within a broad area such as children’s programs, arts, education, seniors, health services, or aiding the homeless. Donor Advised Funds give you the opportunity to make grant suggestions to favorite charities. These funds are a flexible and convenient way to give to charitable organizations and are an easy and attractive alternative to a private foundation. Designated Funds give you the opportunity to provide annual support to specific favorite charities. Should the organization(s) cease to exist, the Foundation has the responsibility to ensure that a donor’s original intent is met. Scholarship Funds provide grants to undergraduate college students. You can establish funds to support certain fields of study, community of residence, or specific schools. They are often established in the name of a loved one. Agency Funds are established by charitable organizations to build endowment and support their operations. The agency benefits from the Foundation’s professional asset management, allowing the agency’s staff and board to focus on providing services to their constituents.
