A solution is not an answer Attend a fitness conference. Walk the aisles of Target, Modell’s or Walmart. Watch TV. Scan your feed on any social media platform. There is no question that the fitness industry does not fall short of offering solutions for the hungry consumer.

The question for the fitness professional then becomes, “What is the right solution for the specific problem I’m trying to solve?” and further, “What does ‘solution’ mean in the context of the client we are serving or the goals of our business or career?”

Solutions are most often birthed from a problem or need by those who are motivated by the spirit of innovation and creativity. The caveat is that a solution is not simply the answer; we are still required to engage our own spirit of motivation, innovation and creativity to apply that solution successfully as it relates to our client or our business/career.

Describe the special population you work with and the challenges that you face when training them?

I work with a large demographic of special populations including spinal cord injuries, ALS, stroke, Parkinson’s, Cerebral Palsy, traumatic brain injury and Multiple Sclerosis. The biggest challenge I face when creating effective programs for my clients is the fact that every diagnosis is different, just as everybody has a unique fingerprint. Every day is like attempting to put another piece of a 100,000-piece puzzle together; and, yes, this is an enormous challenge but also the most exciting part of my work. Every session with my clients we find something new and effective and add it to the puzzle. My clients and I are on a journey; an emotional, mental and physical rollercoaster that allows us to believe in something greater than ourselves.

How do you integrate equipment creatively to help your clients?

One of the machines I most commonly use is a Total Gym. This piece of equipment is awesome to give my clients load-bearing benefits. While my clients are using this machine they are laying down at about a 60% angle, taking some gravity away from them, which allows most of my clients to connect to unassisted leg presses. This helps to maintain their nervous system energy and connection, bone density, muscle mass and provides countless other benefits.

What technology do you find most valuable for you and your clients?

A piece of technology I use very often is the Restorative Therapies Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) cycle. This technology allows my clients to achieve visible muscle contractions that push their legs or arms through a gait training cycle. This helps to gain/maintain muscle mass, nervous system activity, as well as muscular and cardiovascular endurance.

HEALTHIER EMPLOYEES FOR SUPERIOR MARKET PERFORMANCE Capture the corporate wellness opportunity

W

hen it comes to the stock market, top-performing companies are assumed to have the magic formula for customer confidence, innovative products and strong leadership. However, recent research has suggested that there may be a new influencing factor in determining how well a

company performs ‌and it comes down to encouraging employees to adopt healthy habits.

For many business leaders, corporate wellness may be perceived as having secondary benefits. To these executives, encouraging employees to stay fit and healthy can be good for boosting morale, as well as cutting down the costs of implementing and main-

taining company-driven health insurance policies. Yet new studies have shown that organizational leaders who place an emphasis on fit and healthy employees are far more likely to enjoy better gains in the stock market.

CORPORATE WELLNESS: MORE THAN JUST A COST-CUTTING TOOL? In a study published by the American College

At the conclusion of this study, researchers discovered that CHAA portfolios outperformed the S&P average on all tests, leading to the conclusion that a healthy and safe workforce correlates with a company’s performance and its ability to provide position returns to shareholders.

This study only adds to a growing body of evidence that healthy, happy and safe employees are more likely to contribute to a company’s stellar performance within the marketplace.

The research isn’t exactly surprising. Companies that implement corporate wellness programs have already placed a premium on employee safety, health and wellness. These are the companies that are telling their employees that they’re more than just a worker; they’re a person who plays an invaluable role in helping the company grow to success.

With this in mind, employees are much more likely to feel a sense of loyalty and ownership to the company. In fact, employees who participate in corporate wellness programs are generally more likely to: Contribute the kind of thought leadership that creates innovation Stay longer with the company Treat their fellow employees with fairness and respect Look for new ways to contribute to the company’s successes Participate in other company programs, like volunteering efforts of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, researchers proposed a simple yet profound hypothesis: that stock market performance of companies achieving high scores on either health or safety in the Corporate Health Achievement Award (CHAA) process will be superior to average index performance. The CHAA process is considered to be the gold standard for corporate wellness; companies that achieve this certification have implemented programs that encourage healthy habits and regularly reward employees for weight loss, quitting toxic habits, and other wellness milestones.

To test this hypothesis, researchers decided to analyze the stock market performance of portfolios of CHAA winners under six different scenarios using simulation and past

Employees who feel valued by their employers are motivated to come into work, want to contribute to more workplace conversations, and feel a greater sense of responsibility and ownership to the organization.

As employee productivity and motivation increases, so does stakeholder and investor confidence. As an organization begins to benefit from the increased productivity of employees, stakeholders and investors will begin to notice this improvement by way of more efficient business processes, better customer service and even ballooning revenue. These key factors signify that a company

is healthy and successful – in other words, a surefire bet on the stock market.

As you can see, employee health and corporate wellness doesn’t exist in a vacuum; rather, all of these factors contribute to better organizational performance, as well as superior ranking in the stock market. The compounded effects can produce real gains for an organization, meaning it’s time to take another look at implementing a corporate wellness program within your own company.

ROLLING OUT A CORPORATE WELLNESS PROGRAM Whether a business is large or small, a corporate wellness program can boast significant benefits for the bottom line. Before you can implement a corporate wellness program within an organization, however, it’s important to assess the reasons why the organization is doing this. While there’s strong evidence that corporations with health and wellness programs tend to do better in the stock market, this shouldn’t be the primary driving motivation. Doing so can result in choosing the wrong corporate wellness program, which could end up having a negative impact on employee morale and productivity rates.

Choosing the right corporate wellness program is the first step toward ensuring a company’s success by assessing the workplace culture and suggesting programs that are the right fit for the company. Connect and consider partnering with corporate wellness consultants who can advise on regulations, compliance issues and other legal questions that may come up when implementing a corporate wellness program.

Ensure that the corporate wellness program isn’t emphasizing the wrong health benefits to employees. For example, if a corporate wellness program overemphasizes weight loss, this could very quickly turn into a slippery slope. In a worst-case scenario, some employees with medical conditions may feel discriminated against because you’re rewarding employees for losing weight. While this doesn’t always lead to legal action, it can lead to disgruntled and unhappy employees – a definite no-no for companies hoping to improve their market performance!

has been implemented within the organization, carefully track its progress so you can determine if it’s an ideal fit for the company. While employee motivation and satisfaction can be tough criteria to measure, take a careful look at traditional metrics surrounding business processes and procedures. Are employees getting more work done in less time? Are more people speaking up with their own ideas during meetings? Do employee attitudes feel more positive? Are absenteeism rates on a steady decline? The answers to these questions can provide you with key clues as to the effect of the program.

Should you determine that the wellness program is having a positive impact on the organization, let stakeholders, investors and other key players know about this success. These individuals and groups want to stay in the loop about what is being done to improve company morale and productivity, as both factors can be huge influencers for revenue and market performance. Highlight the major benefits the company has seen since rolling out the corporate wellness program. For example, if absenteeism rates have considerably dropped, don’t hesitate to draw that link to your corporate wellness program.

While researchers are still conducting studies as to the correlation between corporate wellness programs and sky-high market performances, there is enough evidence to suggest that business leaders give these programs serious thought. Corporate wellness programs shouldn’t be seen as just a cost-cutting tool; rather, they need to be viewed as a very real and essential tool in improving an organization’s success. After all, happy, healthy and safe employees are better workers – and when a company is home to employee superstars, investors and stakeholders will definitely sit up and take notice.

With that in mind, make sure you integrate a wellness program that doesn’t penalize employees for opting-out. If your employees feel “forced” to join a wellness program, this scenario could be grounds for legal action. Ensure that any employees who don’t opt into the program aren’t accidentally penalized for their refusal to be involved. For example, many business leaders

make the mistake of offering bonuses and other monetary benefits to employees who achieve healthy milestones via the program; however, non-participants have no recourse for similar bonuses. You’ll need to verify that all employees within the organization – regardless of their participation – have access to comparable incentives and benefits.

SURVIVING THE FIRST YEAR AS A PERSONAL TRAINER

Avoid the common missteps early in your career

I

t is no secret that working in the fitness industry can be tough, especially for first-year personal trainers.

The problem that causes new personal trainers to struggle stems partially from entry into the industry. In order to get a start as a personal trainer, it is required you learn an adequate amount about all things related to fitness: anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, program design, etc.

All of these things are great to know, however, when you actually make your start in the industry you will quickly realize that “fitness” is only a small part of what creates and sustains a successful personal training business.

As long as you became a personal trainer for the right reasons, you will realize that you add

much more value to people’s lives than just teaching them proper exercise.

If you’re embarking on the beginning of your personal training career, here are some guidelines to consider:

1. UNDERSTAND THERE IS AN “ART” TO PERSONAL TRAINING BUSINESS The “science” of being a personal trainer is what you’ve focused on through most of your education and certification. Most new personal trainers struggle more with understanding the “art” of the business of personal training.

Imagine, for a second, the family member you see every year who always talks about getting in better shape, but just hates work-

ing out. How much work would it take to get them in for a workout with you? Then imagine how much more it would take to get them excited about the exercises and motivated to finally reach their goals? Then convince them to pay to meet with you two days per week to help them reach their goals.

Be sure to spend time learning how to relate to people, set real goals, motivate, inspire and have a lasting impact. Learning the art is where you will really have an opportunity to change people’s lives beyond exercise.

2. LEARN HOW TO SELL AND HOW TO DO SO ETHICALLY Understanding sales is a very important part of building your business. Learning how to

By Greg Vaughn sell ethically is a must for building long-term success. Beware of the hundreds of systems out there teaching you the “secret” to sales.

Don’t get caught up in learning how to haggle over prices and offer huge discounts.

Instead, approach sales with a goal of helping people. Keep it simple. The people who are coming in to meet with you have a certain problem, or goal that they will not be able to reach without your help. Invest your time in learning how to effectively communicate with people to explain how your service can help them reach their goals.

As for the secret to sales? Convey to the prospect that your service is the absolute best solution to their problem, and the value you add to their lives is worth far more than what it costs. Learn how to inspire someone to take action toward bettering their lives with your guidance.

3. FIND A GOOD MENTOR With all that goes into personal training, you are not going to get very far if you’re completely on your own. Networking and continuing education is extremely important for your success in this industry. However, the height you reach in your career will most likely be greatly affected by your mentors. Choose wisely! You don’t want to take advice from just anyone willing to give it. Look for someone who is willing to help, who is in it for the right reasons and who has had to overcome similar obstacles as yourself. Allow your mentors to give you real, unbiased advice about how to advance your career. If you are listening to the right people, you will be able to advance much more quickly than if you were trying to do it on your own. Just be sure to not only listen, but apply what they tell you.

4. QUALITY IS WHAT BUILDS LONG-TERM BUSINESS Always keep your focus on your clients, and find ways to add value to the service you provide. It is fine to have a goal of growing from 10 to 20 clients. It is fine to market, study sales and work toward getting more people in your schedule.

However, the most effective marketing strategy will always be doing as much as you possibly can for the 10 clients you have now.

Everything from building programs to the amount of energy you bring into each session matters. Depending on your client’s results now depends on how long they stick with you, and what they say about you. Word of mouth is still one of the best ways to gain new clients. Be sure to bring everything you have into each and every session; it will pay off!

Leaving your schedule open from 5 a.m. 10 p.m. to take whoever you can get, whenever they can show up, will hamper your ability to be efficient and productive.

Other tasks you want to prioritize that will have a direct impact on your business are things you can do to increase the value of your service that can also parlay as marketing opportunities. This may include scheduling a run in the park with your clients, writing a blog or an e-book, shooting a video for clients, etc. Value-added services, marketing and continuing education should have designated times in your daily, weekly and monthly schedule.

Continually evaluate how you’re spending your time. If there is no time for you to eat, workout and do something outside of the gym, you’re likely overscheduling. Figure out what can come off of the list and reevaluate.

A career as a personal trainer can be extremely rewarding. It can also be equally exhausting. Remember why you chose to be in this industry, and allow your actions to be in constant pursuit of creating a thriving business. It can be difficult to build your clientele and reach your professional goals, but the earlier in your career you practice being purposeful about how you commit your time and energy, the greater the reward will likely be.

5. GET ORGANIZED Arguably, organization is the most important aspect to work on in year one. A typical day in the life of many successful personal trainers includes: Working with clients (5-8 hours) Meeting with new prospects (1-2 hours) Continuing education (1 hour) Writing blogs/emails for clients, or other things that add value to the program (1 hour) Scheduling clients/responding to emails/ questions/checking up on clients (1 hour) Marketing with social media, emails, guest passes, advertisements, articles, etc. (1 hour) Total time committed to a new fitness business can run between 13-18 hours a day.

Some of the tasks listed do not have to be done every day and this is precisely why it is important to get organized. The solution?

Plan all of your most important tasks, create systems that work for you, and then stick to your systems. Be tactical with how you plan out your days, weeks and months.

Your first priority in your schedule is your clients. When building your schedule, you will want to strategically block out available training times to schedule clients. For example, make yourself available for training sessions Monday from 7 a.m. to noon, then 3 to 7 p.m.

CHARGE WHAT YOU’RE WORTH Strategies to successfully increase your rates

D

o you feel nervous about raising your rates? Are you worried that your clients will all leave you, or that new clients will stop coming to train with you? Here are some tips to help you raise your rates without losing clients.

First step in all cases below is to plan to send an email to your clients announcing that you will have a new rate effective on a set date.

TIP #1: SPEND TIME CRAFTING THE EMAIL. How you present potentially sensitive information is at least as important, if not more important than the actual information you present. Ideally, you want to lead into the price change rather than just blurt it out.

Have you purchased new equipment over the past year? Attended conferences and increased your knowledge? Have you had an influx of new clients such that your schedule

is now quite full? These are all great reasons for increasing your rates. Make your introductory paragraph about one of these improvements you have made to your space or your ability. Then start the second paragraph as a transition from that. The third and any subsequent paragraphs of the email can then provide the details of the increase and how it will be applied. Here is an example:

TIP #2: GRANDFATHER-IN YOUR EXISTING CLIENTS, BUT TELL THEM YOU ARE DOING THIS SO THAT THEY FEEL A SENSE OF LOYALTY FROM YOU. Here is an example I have used with my clients:

So really this is nothing new for you. It’s not that we keep the same rates forever, but we do try to provide a better deal for clients who have been with us a while than for new folks. Just a little way we have of saying thanks for training with us.

Now here is the cool thing about this approach: you can make your clients feel appreciated for their loyalty while also introducing the idea of increasing their rates in the future.

As you can see in the next excerpt, that is exactly what I did. Note this is the second section of the email; the first introduced our new scheduling system. It still follows Tip #1 in that it does not jump right into discussion of price, although I did not use that first paragraph to grease the wheels on the new prices this time but instead refer back to how they have paid less for the past six months as the reason for the increase.

If you opt for the grandfathered approach, revisit your rates in another six months and consider bringing everyone up to par at that point, but as you do, remind them that they’ve been receiving a loyalty discount for six months. And, of course, remember to thank them again for their loyalty.
