Is it July already? Well, as we all know, time and tide wait for no man. It seems as if patience is becoming a recurring theme as time and tide may wait for no man, but will certainly have to wait on our construction schedule, the Corona virus, staff training, and any other unforeseen acts of mother nature. We had a successful “soft opening” of the roll up bar on June 26th with our new and returning wait staff doing a great job. And, frankly, our members are doing a great job as well. We are hoping to open the inside after the Fourth of July but are still waiting on a few items. As Mother Mayo used to always tell me, “Hurry up and wait.” With respect to golf, our rounds are up significantly. Jason and his crew are doing a great job in not only keeping the

course playable, but also improving the condition. I think the tee boxes may be a better putting surface than half the greens in Oregon. They may have more slope as well, but that is another story for another day. In order to continue improving the conditions, remember to keep the carts off the par 3’s, not within 30 yards of the greens on the rest of the course, fix your ball marks, and sand your divots. These are all little things that contribute to improving the course condition. Membership is up, and many of our new members are golfers. If you get a chance, welcome the new members when you see them. We are glad to have them! I will leave you with a little more family wisdom, courtesy of my cousin Herb. “Jim, this game is easy. Just beat on it, go find it, and beat on it some more.” Cheers! - Jimmy

CONSTRUCTION ZONE WE'RE GETTING CLOSER

A new sneak peek of the renovations to the Out Door area, Foyer, Fine Dining, and the Pub & Grille. We are moving along, though a tad bit behind what we'd hoped to have done by now. The Pass Through Bar is open and serving cold beverages. Fine Dining is scheduled to begin service in Fall of 2020. We are so excited to show you all of the new and exciting changes at the club. Any new information will be included in the weekly eBlast.

WE'RE OPEN! Well, partially. The Pass Through Bar to the Pub & Grille is now open and serving cold beverages. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy sitting by the Tree Bar or a cold libation while playing a round.

I’d like to start my message this month by personally thanking all of our members for the great support you’ve shown during our remodel. There are just a few more projects to finish before the new Pub & Grille will be ready to invite you indoors! Once these projects are completed, I will then be able to train our new and returning staff members. This training will also address the State’s COVID-19 requirements for serving indoors. Again, I thank you for your support and understanding as we navigate these unusual times. BBQ TRAILER!!! If you haven’t heard, we are getting a brand new BBQ trailer. It is being built as you read this and is scheduled to arrive the 3rd week in July. It has the capability to cook a whole pig, 35 racks of ribs, and up to 350 lbs. of meat, it has a separate box for grilling chicken, and is an all wood fired unit… no propane. Look forward to it’s introduction party soon!! - Iain

Recipe of the Month JULIA'S CAESAR SALAD Recipe credit: Epicurious (julia Child & Caesar Cardini)

INGREDIENTS: 18 to 24 crisp, narrow leaves of hearts of 2 heads of romaine lettuce 1 cup plain toasted croutons 1 large clove garlic, peeled 1/4 cup or more excellent olive oil Salt 1 large egg Freshly ground black pepper 1 whole lemon, halved and seeded Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese, imported Parmigiano-Reggiano only

FOOD FUN FACT DID YOU KNOW... The Caesar Salad was created July 4th 1924? The salad was created on a busy weekend at Caesar Cardini's Restaurant located in Tijuana. It is said that it was busy and Caesar was short of supplies but did not want to disappoint the customers. So he concocted this salad with what ingredients he had on hand. To add a little flair to this, he prepared it table side.

INSTRUCTIONS: Preparing the salad components:

You will probably need 2 large heads of romaine for 3 people — or use a commercially prepared package of "romaine hearts," if they appear fresh and fine. From a large head remove the outside leaves until you get down to the cone where the leaves are 4 to 7 inches in length — you'll want 6 to 8 of these leaves per serving. Separate the leaves and wash them carefully to keep them whole, roll them loosely in clean towels, and keep refrigerated until serving time. (Save the remains for other salads — fortunately, romaine keeps reasonably well under refrigeration. To flavor the croutons, crush the garlic clove with the flat of a chef's knife, sprinkle on 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and mince well. Pour about a tablespoon of olive oil on the garlic and mash again with the knife, rubbing and pressing to make a soft purée. Scrape the purée into the frying pan, add another tablespoon of oil, and warm over lowmedium heat. Add the croutons and toss for a minute or two to infuse them with the garlic oil, then remove from the heat. (For a milder garlic flavor, you can strain the purée though a small sieve into a pan before adding the extra croutons. Discard the bits of garlic.) To coddle the egg, bring a small saucepan of water to a simmer. Pierce the large end of the egg with a pushpin to prevent cracking, then simmer for exactly 1 minute. Mixing and serving the Caesar:

Dress the salad just before serving. Have ready all the dressing ingredients and a salad fork and spoon for tossing. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the romaine leaves and toss to coat, lifting the leaves from the bottom and turning them towards you, so they tumble over like a wave.

"I ENJOY COOKING WITH WINE. SOMETIMES I EVEN PUT IT IN THE FOOD..." - Julia Child

Sprinkle them with a generous pinch of salt and several grinds of pepper, toss once or twice, then add the lemon juice and several drops of the Worcestershire, and toss again. Taste for seasoning, and add more, if needed. Crack the egg and drop it right on the romaine leaves, then toss to break it up and coat the leaves. Sprinkle on the cheese, toss briefly, then add the croutons (and the garlicky bits in the pan, if you wish) and toss for the last time, just to mix them into the salad. Arrange 6 or more leaves in a single layer on individual plates, scatter the croutons all around, and serve.

GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH PUTTING SIMPLIFIED Your “Par” for putting is 2 putts per hole. That is 36 strokes in your round. If the “par” for the course is 72, that is half of your strokes so practice 50% of your time on the putting green! QUICK TIP: Miss on the “high side” of the cup and miss 1 to 3 ft long. If you miss low and short you never gave the ball a chance to get in the hole. Practice those 3 footers the most before the round so you are comfortable to clean up that missed putt.

distancing restrictions, and to limit surfaces being touched by patrons. With increase in membership, and with less members traveling at the moment, we have been seeing an increase in Golfers over the last several months. This is great to see! With this, it is important to call ahead and book your tee times in advance. Members are able to book 2-weeks in advance for a tee time. Contact the shop directly to book the times. See you on the course! - Jordan

WHY YOUR KIDS SHOULD LEARN GOLF THIS SUMMER YOUR KID WILL HAVE FUN Kids can participate in group or individual lessons and Junior Golf Camps, where they meet other kids from all walks of life.

ANYONE CAN PLAY To a kid, golf may seem like a sport only older people play, but that’s only because golf is a lifelong sport. Imagine playing a game you love and can play forever.

MORE TIME OUTSIDE Studies show that kids are spending less time outside these days. Increased sports activities lead to improved cognitive and academic skills, which is why participants are taught the game of golf through experience-based learning, out on the golf course or driving range.

LEARN MORE THAN A GOLF SWING Experience-based Learning isn’t just to teach kids the basics of golf. While learning the fundamentals of a golf swing. Learning golf early not only provide a fun, active environment but also how to manage emotions, resolve conflicts, communicate, set goals and much more.

GOLF IS MORE EXCITING THAN EVER Ask anyone who watches golf today, the game still has a few surprises up its sleeve. A large part due to the return of Tiger Woods and many other young PGA TOUR players who are defying the odds like Viktor Hovland, Inbee Park, Collin Morikawa, and Amy Olson.

LEGACY You want your kids to play and enjoy golf for the rest of their lives, don't ruin it by making it a chore. "If they want to play 3 holes and go to the clubhouse to get a soda, so be it. The best thing you can do is show your kids what a great time you're having. If they see you having a wonderful time, then chances are they'll have a good time too." - Dr. Rob Rotella, legendary sports psychologist. Source: TheLeftRough,

COURSE IMPROVEMENTS SUPER JASON LEONARD The maintenance department is running on all cylinders. We are getting some awesome projects done while also doing the general core maintenance to make the golf course the best it can be. Some projects that have been on my list for years, that we finally got done: leveling of hole 2 forward tee box drainage around hole 16 forward tee box filling in some of the cart path pot holes Hole 2 forward tee box had a big crown in the middle. GET MORE ENJOYMENT out of your golf game Lets face it. You are choosing to spend your spare time out on the course, so make the most of it by having as much fun as possible. Some golfers fail to take this kind of attitude out onto the course. Instead, they are often serious, nervous, and even grumpy. So how do you make sure that you are having as much fun as possible out on the links? Let’s dive into a few ways to shift your perspective about the game.

Don't Play Alone While it’s technically an individual sport, it isn’t meant to be played alone. Unless you’re out there grinding it out to go pro or you just don’t like people (hopefully not the latter). Connecting with golfers just like you, you’ll experience golf through travel, be able to dip your toes into the world of competition, or just discover casual play opportunities with new people. Whatever strikes your fancy.

Don't Be Intimidated Believe it or not, the average golfer is right around the same level as you. Odds are, you’re not going to run into Tiger Woods on the course. And no matter how much people tend to ACT like Tiger Woods – they aren’t. However, confidence is key to enjoying golf everywhere you go and having a Handicap Index helps immensely with leveling out the playing field.

Thank you Joe Mayo and Jim Mayo for your support to make these projects happen. We have a growing project list that we will keep picking away at as time permits. HOW TO PROPERLY REPAIR A BALL MARK

step 1

step 2

Start off with the Ball Mark Repair Tool. The first step in repairing ball marks is to take your ball mark repair tool and insert the prongs into the turf at the edge of the depression. Note: Do not insert the prongs into the depression itself, but at the rim of the depression. Push the edge of the ball mark toward the center, using your ball mark repair tool in a "gentle twisting motion," According to the Golf Course

step 3

Superintendents Association of America , this step is where golfers incorrectly

"repair" ball marks. Many golfers believe the way to "fix" a ball mark is to insert the tool at an angle, so the prongs are beneath the center of the crater, and then to use the tool as a lever to push the bottom of the ball mark back up even with the surface. Do not do this! Pushing the bottom of the depression upward only tears the roots and kills the grass.

step 4

Once you've worked around the rim of the ball mark with your repair tool, pushing the grass toward the center, there's only one thing left to do: Gently tamp down the repaired ball mark with your putter or foot to smooth the putting surface. Then admire your work and pat yourself on the back for helping to take care of the golf course.

ON THE COURT During these trying times, the Corvallis Club is doing our part to provide a safe and clean environment for all our members. Because tennis does not require any direct person-to-person contact, players can enjoy the many physical and mental benefits that tennis offers, as long as social distancing is practiced by keeping six feet apart. Please ensure you are following recommended guidelines on the next page.
