PRODUCT DESIGN These are some representative projects in my sophomore and up to my senior years, which will give you a general idea about the style I have and what I can create with my brain and do with my hands.

OASIS Aero-naval Unmanned Rescue Machine’, a model drone jointly completed in 9 months with the effort of me and my teammate, was our graduation project. It was one of the biggest and most complicated projects that I had ever done. The reason for me to feel interested in the drones was the air disasters happened in recent years and the difficulty and cost in searching the planes and rescuing the passengers. I thought if I could design drones for this purpose to help, it would be more efficient and less cost

As its name suggests, ‘Firearm’ gaming mouse’s target customers are those who are deeply passionate about gunfight games and those who are very interested in military equipment and machine aesthetics. Its role is to live and die together and seek glory with its user in the gaming world. What’s more, even in reality, the product should look like a bad-ass weapon!

This was an assignment for us when I was at my sophomore year, from which I had tons of fun doing and learnt a lot. And what’s more, I knew how to make models that are ‘actually working’ from this. We were told at the beginning that, the igniter model has to be able to ignite successfully or we will fail. It was really quite some challenge at that time for us. I started picturing my design with what Jony Ive had once said: ’A good product could seamlessly improve one’s life.’ I hoped my ignitor could guide people to using it correctly seamlessly as soon as they pick it up and enable people to use it gracefully. And how to realize the function without compromising the form was the most often thought question when making the model. But at last I managed to pull out the whole thing.

It’s display conveys a sense of a bamboo being served on table in a plate. Leaving people with space for imagination.

27/28

It started of with many forms: the looks of traditional candles, the look of a magic wand, the look of a sward, etc. Then I started to seek for a kind of form which has the feature of being seemlessly comfortable and instinctive to use. I stopped at a form that’s extremely simple but will naturally guide the user to grab it and to push the button. With the help of sketching and CAD. I quickly went into making real size model. Making models were always fun!

1-2. This what the wood model first look like , very square and rough. Getting the right length is very important at this phace. It was very easy with a help of a CAD printed paper. 3-4. When the wooden part is cut out, I started to shape it into a rounder form, and getting the little detail for users to rest their finger . It took a lot of sanding and polishing. When the wood model is done, I used the vacuum forming machine to create a plastice shell.

5-6. Here comes the most challenging part of the whole project: making it work! In order to make it work, I desembled parts from lighters sold on the market, and repositioned their order so as to fit into the shell i created. It really was a story filled with tons of tears and sweat. I tried a lot of ways trying to stablize the inner parts on my slippery structure. And finally, I made it! 7. This is when I first tried to ignited when it’s completely done! It took more adjustments to make the using comfortable, but it ended up almost perfect!

8. I was giving it a nice photoshoot to prepare it for the world!

The peeler was an assignment in my sophomore year as well. Even though we were required to be more and more practical about our design, I still wanted to try something ridiculous, something quite different. For due to the interest I had in ‘organic forms’ such as creatures in the deep sea or alien creatures, I made some tilt to it at the end of the design process. To be honest, for this work, I wasn’t really considering too much about ‘practicability’ or ‘marketability’, it was more like an ‘artistic work’ I created to express myself. The peeler exists like a black cyclone roared past our hands, and somehow, it corresponds with the ‘right hand rule’ in physics. I had the intension to make the peeler more instinctive, but at the same time, it had also limited the using of the user. But in general, I had fun and learnt a lot from this!

FIT PEALER Design

Product Design Course 2013 (Sophomore Year)

31/32

It looks like some sort of sea creature or some kind of alien form. But I guarantee you it will fit exactly on your grib.

33/34

I started of with some usual forms of peelers. But they almost have the same starting point-- to fit perfectly in ones grip. People should be able to grab it firmly when using my peeler so as to protect people from accidents.

The first prototype is made of gypsum, I simply squeezed a pile of gypsum, and soon I got the shape I wanted! And then I shaped it with EVA foam, molded with silicon and polyethylene at last.

35/36 It also took me a lot of time and effort to make the shape elegant and comfortable. The first prototype was very rough and I had to spend more time to shape and polish it with EVA foam. It was my first time to make something with silicon mold. Anyway, I was quite satisfied that the final poly model felt firm and comfortable. I loved it.

SPACE DESIGN

37/38

I am also interested in the interaction between people and the space surrounding them. I would feel fascinated wherever space is neatly designed to form a natural bond with the people. I believe that there is similarity between the space design and product design.

This was the exhibition designed by me and my team under my leadership, another major project that I felt very proud of. I was assigned the leader of the Exhibition Design Team of our graduation exhibition of YODEX 2016. There were several unique points for this project. First, none of us had experience of exhibition design. Second, it was never a project that could be completed by 3 or 4 persons, but a big team almost 10 persons at least. The challenge we were facing included: 1.The location was in a very remote area which could hardly be spotted from the outside. 2. We had too many items to be displayed in very limited space. As the group leader and chief designer, I assigned my teammates to begin the study of exhibition design themselves. And then I tried to inspire them with the knowledge we learnt. I myself did the the floor arrangement, built the 3D models and attended the meetings held in the construction company.

39/40

The theme of our exhibition was “tear open”, so for the key visual wall, we made it look as if it was torn open from outside like a piece paper. And for the inside, I wanted to keep it clean and simple, so black and white was used mainly. Due to our poorly located spot, we wanted to be able to attract people’s attention while not creating too much constricted feelings, I designed a huge frame with a big opening, and left the rest of the exhibition as open as possible.

I took some interior design courses and studied some skills myself these years just for my interest I have in the interior and space design. There are two projects in this section; one was the homework I had done for the course I participated. I found a site plan of a house, and rearranged its compartments with the help of AutoCAD and finally, with Sketch Up, the 3D model. The other was a project done in New Zealand to help a builder friend for the effect pictures in the advertisement. All of the experience accumulated in these practices was proved useful in the graduation exhibition design.

Sketch Up

Site Plan (Auto CAD) This was the project I did when I was taking the course of interior design. We were asked to find a site plan and re-design it. The main idea of this project was to design an industrial style apartment for a single person. I was in charge of the living room, the dining room, kitchen, toilet and a bedroom. Every room was in industrial style except for the bedroom and the toilet, which one was in a slight Japanese style and the other was enhancing the texture of the stone.
