Ways You Can Help the Chamber Improve Your Community

Think Local and Shop Local

We realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally, so we merely ask you to, “Think Local FIRST!” Dollars spent with local businesses stay in the local economy and community longer than dollars spent with non-local businesses. You help create local jobs for residents, invest in the community where you live, and the taxes paid help support the police, fire and recreational services for the the city.. When you shop local, you strengthen the economic base, which improves the quality of life of the entire community. Go to www.shopsurpriseaz.com for more info.

Check Out the Self-Serve Visitor and Tourism Center If you are new to town or just looking for local attractions, stop by and speak with one of the volunteers at the official Visitor and Tourism Center for Surprise. We have many one-of-a-kind restaurants, shops and lots of things to do in the area. Go to www.visitsurpriseaz.com for more info.

Volunteer Welcome visitors and provide invaluable information regarding local businesses, recreational resources and other areas of interest. The Visitor Center is conveniently located in the Surprise Civic Center Complex, just blocks away from the Surprise recreational facilities. We offer flexible hours and a fun environment.

Whether it is a celebration of a new facility, a new location or expansion,we invite you to join the Chamber in recognizing member successes. Maricopa County, Arizona.

Our Region is Poised for Economic Growth: According to WESTMARC, the Western Maricopa Coalition, “The West Valley’s transportation infrastructure and connectivity to other markets is unparalleled in Arizona.” Here are a few more notable characteristics outlined by WESTMARC:

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL HUB Our road, rail, and air transportation capabilities enable the West Valley to be uniquely positioned for economic activity. The West Valley is located less than 5 hours from the largest U.S. ports of import (Los Angeles

and Long Beach), making the region an excellent location for national and international activity. ROAD The West Valley is uniquely positioned to service the California market. Increased access to booming municipalities in the Northwest Valley with the development of the Loop 303, easy access to Interstate 17 and Loop 101, enable those areas to create a new commercial corridor. The prospect of Interstate 11 would place the West Valley in the center of a new corridor connecting Canada and Mexico.

The Surprise Regional Chamber represents five communities in the NW Valley. Largest city/suburbs (over 100,000 inhabitants): • Surprise Other suburbs and towns/all unincorporated communities (over 10,000 inhabitants): • Sun City • Sun City West Smaller suburbs and towns (over 5,000 inhabitants) • El Mirage • Youngtown

RAIL The West Valley is serviced by two major rail lines, Union Pacific Rail Road (UPRR), and Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF), making the region optimal for rail cargo activity. AIR The region is a straight shot on I-10 to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport – one of the top ten busiest airports in the country. Sky Harbor flies nonstop to more than 80 domestic locations and 120 international destinations. Further, the West Valley boasts six airports with economic development strategies in place

T

he Surprise region stretching from Youngtown to almost Wickenburg, is an emerging market like no other in the area. Unlike many other cities, we have undeveloped land and lots of it! Our region covers over 132 square miles, has a strong community identity, has connectivity to major transportation corridors, natural beauty, a variety of urban/suburban clusters and a wonderful quality of life. Our region is unique in that we have significant long-term economic viability in attracting residents, tourists, businesses and investors. ~ Raoul E. MANUFACTURING AND LOGISTICS. The West Valley has all of the key components of a prime location for manufacturing and logistics: available land, low cost of operations, skilled workforce, multimodal access and the proximity to top-growth markets and ports of international entry. The West Valley also has its own foreign trade zone - FTZ No. 277, the Greater Maricopa Foreign Trade Zone (www.gmftz.org). The West Valley is proud to be the location of manufacturers in a variety of industries. RENEWABLE ENERGY AND CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES. The renewable energy and clean tech industries have become economic drivers for the West Valley. The West Valley boasts locations of North American headquarters and manufacturing facilities – such as Gestamp Solar Steel – for companies from countries around the world. U.S.based renewable energy and clean tech companies, including advanced battery technologies leader Maxwell Technologies, have also chosen the West Valley for research and development as well as manufacturing facilities.

College Ready @

Imagine Schools

O

ur world is changing. By 2020, nearly 70 percent of jobs in Arizona will require a post-secondary degree. Simultaneously, research is showing that many high school graduates are not equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in post-secondary environments, whether that is a fouryear university or college, career/ technical school or community college. These two realities cannot coexist. And that is precisely why Imagine Rosefield and Imagine Prep Surprise have joined Cambridge International Examinations in their mission to provide a rigorous, world- class education for all students.

By Erika Fosgreen

Cambridge Coordinator, Imagine Prep Surprise

As a part of the Excellence for All/ Move on When Ready initiatives, Imagine Schools in Surprise have aligned instruction and assessments directly to research-proven, college readiness benchmarks. Students begin their journeys to college readiness at Imagine Rosefield, a Pre-K through 5th grade campus with a strong emphasis on rigorous academics and character development. Upon entering 6th grade, students then attend Imagine Prep Surprise, a 6th through 12th grade campus that focuses on active, student-centered classroom environments and a strong culture of academic excellence and student leadership.

e realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally, so we merely ask you to Think Local FIRST!

1 Buy Local to Support Yourself Several studies have shown that when you buy from a locally-owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms, which continues to strengthen the economic base of the community.

2

Support Community Groups

7

Keep our Community Unique

8

Nonprofit organizations receive on average 250 percent more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses. 3

Where we shop, where we eat and where we have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-akind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. bout the petroglyphs of White Tank Mountains ancient Arizonans pecked hundreds of figures and symbols on the rock faces of the White Tank Mountains. Some may approach 10,000 years old. All have withstood sun, rain, and vandals for 700 to 800 years or more. Visitors are not permitted to make "tombstone rubbings" of the petroglyphs. It doesn't work and it will erode the dark areas, making the petroglyph dimmer. Look at and photograph these figures and symbols of history, but please do not touch the petroglyphs because skin oils can also damage them.

The Maricopa Trail offers visitors to Surprise a vast area of Sonoran Desert and mountain hiking with easy access. It lies at the far west of Surprise and connects to White Tank Mountain Regional Park, which features an additional 25 miles of excellent shared-use trails. The Maricopa Trail is an unfinished 242-mile (389 km) trail located within Maricopa County and connecting the major regional and municipal parks in and around the Phoenix metropolitan area. A loop trail encircling much of the urbanized area, the trail also consists of four spurs that will connect the loop with outlying mountain parks in the region. The trail crosses the U.S. 60 in Surprise, and approximately 15 miles of the trail run west of the Loop 303. Conceptualized in 1997 by the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department, the Maricopa Trail was envisioned as a pedestrian beltway that would connect nine of the department’s 10 regional parks, linking them with the city of Phoenix’s South Mountain Park and encouraging their use by the area’s residents. The trail incorporates existing portions of the Sun Circle Trail, the National Trail in South Mountain Park, portions of the trails within White Tank Mountain Regional Park, Cave Creek Regional Park and pathways already developed along the McMicken corridor in Surprise. Construction on new segments of the trail began in 2006 and has brought the total length of the existing corridors to approximately 80 miles (130 km).

The Maricopa Trail connects nine county parks as well as one municipal park:

• B uckeye Hills Regional Park (spur route) • Cave Creek Regional Park • Estrella Mountain Regional Park • Lake Pleasant Regional Park • McDowell Mountain Regional Park • San Tan Mountain Regional Park (spur route) • South Mountain Park • Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area • Usery Mountain Regional Park (spur route) • White Tank Mountain Regional Park (spur route)

Horseback and mountain bike riders are welcome, although caution is stressed as some of the trails may be extremely difficult. In addition, there are 2.5 miles of pedestrian-only trails. These include two short trails that are hard-surfaced and barrier free. Waterfall Trail is barrier-free for 5/10 of a mile.
