Whatever it is that calls to you, it can be found in Globe-Miami and southern Gila County. Fine examples of Territorial architecture abound in southern Gila County, from the storefronts of our downtown areas, to the neighborhood architecture, to the tufa stone buildings in San Carlos. Is the call of the Old West beckoning? Perhaps a desire to connect with the early days of rough and tumble miners and hard-riding cowboys holds an allure. You’ll find it here. Mining began here in the late 1860s when silver was first discovered. A large nugget of silver, vaguely round and suggesting a globe, was found in the foothills of the present day city, and that’s how Globe got its name. That large silver nugget is now on display in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Globe was founded in

1876 and incorporated in 1907. Miami was incorporated in 1918 after huge (for that day and age) deposits of low-grade porphyry copper were discovered. Globe is the county seat of Gila County. Located in the foothills of the Pinal Mountains at an elevation of 3,500 feet, we enjoy cooler summers than our metropolitan neighbors while still having pleasant, sunny winters. There is much to see and experience, as our mining history, Old West traditions and Native American culture offer a wide-ranging Southwestern experience. A full lineup of family-owned Mexican food restaurants, with recipes handed down through generations, will delight the palate. The historic downtowns, copper mining, our neighbors on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, and abundant outdoor recreation throughout the Tonto National Forest combine to make Globe-Miami much more than the sleepy community many expect to find. Visit Globe-Miami and the San Carlos Apache Reservation and enjoy the wonderful scenery and the many points of interests. Along Highway 60, next to the Globe-Miami Chamber, the Gila County Historical Museum features collections and Indian artifacts dating back to 1125 AD, several displays of period furniture, an exhibit dedicated to ranching and the early-day cowboy, and superb photographic exhibits. Occupying what was once the Globe-Miami Mine Rescue Station, the museum is open Monday through

Friday from 10 am to 4 pm, and Saturday from 11am to 3pm. It is operated by the Gila County Historical Society. A walking tour brochure of historic downtown Globe, available at the Chamber, lists many of the old buildings and their histories. The most spectacular of them is the old Gila County Courthouse that now houses the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts. The Cobre Valley Fine Arts Guild was able to resurrect it from its decaying state. It has been restored to much of its former glory. Community plays and monthly art shows ensure its place as a viable contributor to our downtown. Just recently the newlyremodeled upper rooms in the third floor, one of the final pieces of the restoration puzzle, were opened to the public. The historic Gila County Jail is located behind the old courthouse. The jail, which features cell blocks from the infamous Yuma Territorial Prison has, shall we say, “interesting” graffiti from prisoners throughout the years. It is open to the public during downtown events and by appointment. Other sites of interest in downtown include the beautiful Holy Angels Catholic Church which features exceptional examples of stained glass. The equally historic St. John’s Episcopal, St. Paul’s Methodist and First Presbyterian churches are within walking distance of downtown. Their history reminds us that even in the rough and tumble mining towns, citizens strived for civility and stability. After exploring historic downtown Globe, continue south on Broad Street. At the stop sign, watch for signs to Besh-Ba Gowah Archaeological Park. This ancient ruin is a remarkable restoration of a Salado pueblo inhabited in the 12th and 13th centuries. Walk through the rooms of this 700-year-old pueblo and see the utensils, pottery

We love to brag about the number and variety of Miami’s antique shops. From collectibles to furniture to just plain fun, neat stuff that brings to mind “the good old days,” Miami has it all. and furnishings that were part of life in pre-Columbian times. Besh-Ba Gowah is open everyday from 9am to 4:30pm, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Admission is $5 per person Adult $4 Senior 12 and under Free. Summer Hours -closed Monday & Tuesday July-September. The town of Miami, six miles west of Globe, is currently the site of several active copper mining operations including Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, Capstone and BHP Copper –the latest names in a litany of historic mines and mining companies that have done business here in the last 150 years. The mission-style Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church is striking in its simplicity and beauty. And if you’re inclined towards a little exercise, check out the stairs a block up from town hall . . . in the early days, this was how miners went to work. These are the Keystone Stairs, but you might think “Breathless” a more appropriate name by the time you reach the top. We love to brag about the number and variety of Miami’s antique shops. From collectibles to furniture to just plain fun, neat stuff that brings to mind “the good old days,” Miami has it all. Coffee shops, eclectic Western architecture and shady parks make Miami idea for an afternoon stroll. A brochure listing the antique stores can be found at any of the shops or at the Chamber Visitor Center. The Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum is located at the west end of Miami. The school opened in 1923 as a grammar

school for Mexican-American and Apache Indian children. Desegregation came in the early 1950s and Bullion served as a public school until 1994. By 2000 the building had been named to the Historic Register and community volunteers were hard at work to establish a top-notch museum. Marvel at the 240-ton haul truck bed holding a 35-ton haul truck, which has been put on the site and is a constant draw for visitors curious to see up-close the actual size of what is now a small truck in the mining business. Restoration of the museum continues with many of the classrooms redone and the gym/meeting room now a topnotch facility. The large classrooms lend themselves nicely to spectacular exhibits of minerals, Slavic and Hispanic history and military veterans. Of special interest is the collection of Arizona memorabilia donated to the museum by Rose Perica Mofford, a Globe native and Arizona’s first woman governor. Staffed by volunteers, the museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 11am to 3pm; Sunday from noon to 3pm; and by request for special events. Memberships at various levels are welcome. For information, call Tom Foster at (602) 432-7474. The San Carlos Apache Reservation, east of Globe on Highway 70, is known for outstanding hunting and fishing opportunities. Just outside town, the Apache Gold Casino and Resort and the Apache Gold Stronghold Golf Course provide big-city amenities in a friendly small-town atmosphere. Continuing east, visit the newly-remodeled San Carlos Cultural Center for opportunities to see history from the Apache perspective. Their gift shop features baskets, jewelry, beading and other items handmade by San Carlos Apaches, and is staffed by tribal members who are pleased to chat with visitors and explain the history and culture of the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Looking for a place to

stretch your legs? We’ve got that too! A variety of trails for all fitness levels is available, including the Pinal Mountains south of Globe which offer some of the best birding and hiking found anywhere. Get your bird checklist at the chamber and head to the easily accessible mountains. Visitors can drive to the top or there are trails for mountain biking and hiking enthusiasts. For fishing and water activities, there is no better place to start than Roosevelt Lake, a 30-minute drive from Globe. There are plenty of hiking and picnicking opportunities in town as well. In addition to many in-town paths, Round Mountain Park, just minutes from downtown Globe, is the perfect place to walk off your lunch or take in splendid views of the surrounding countryside. Several trails offer a variety of hiking experiences for visitors. At the top

of Round Mountain, visitors find sweeping views of the town below and gorgeous desert vistas. Picnic ramadas make this a family-friendly place. The Old Dominion Historic Mine Park is now open with more than three miles of walking trails. The park is located off Murphy Street in Globe and features wide graded trails that have plenty of interpretive signs that explore the history of this former copper mine. The head frame is still standing and offers a wonderful photo opportunity. Again, picnic ramadas for large groups, single table ramadas, and shaded benches invite visitors to savor this visit to a piece of Arizona history. Globe-Miami is not just mining, museums and antique shops. It is also known for its many events, recreation, climate, breathtaking scenery and fabulous Mexican food! You won’t find a friendlier, more interesting place to visit. Stop in at the Globe-Miami Regional Chamber of Commerce, 1360 N. community profile >> Globe and Miami, important copper mining centers for more

than a century, are colorful communities five miles apart in east-central Arizona. Both are located in a steep canyon at 3,500 feet in the Pinal Mountains of southern Gila (pronounced Heela) County. Highway 60 connects the communities. Globe’s ample water resources and ideal location for distribution of mining products led to its founding as a mining town in 1876. The city was incorporated twice prior to its present incorporation in 1907. Globe is the county seat. Miami was founded in 1912 by Black Jack Newman as a camp near his copper mine. The town incorporated in 1918. Copper remains huge for the Globe-Miami area with employment continuing in the mining, refining and production of copper. With a smelter and rod plant in operation, Freeport-McMoRan is a major contributor to the economy, as are the other area copper producers.

Principal Economic Activities More than 20 percent of employment in Globe-Miami is related to the mining and production of copper. Over half of Gila County’s sizeable manufacturing sector employment is in copper smelting, refining or rod production. In the area, there are three copper mines, a smelter and a rod mill.

APACHE TRAIL >>

sightseeing outside globe-miami TONTO NATIONAL MONUMENT >> Located four miles east of Roosevelt Dam, the park is a step back to the days long before European visitors arrived. Park gates are open from 8 am to 5 pm daily, except Christmas Day. The site features a museum and explanatory video. The museum and restrooms are wheelchair-accessible, but the dwellings are not. The Lower Dwelling Trail, which leads to a 19-room cliff dwelling, closes at 4pm. Allow one hour for the one-mile round-trip. Leashed pets are allowed on this trail. The 40-room Upper Dwelling may be visited by guided tour from November through April. The tour is limited to 15 people and takes three to four hours. Pets are not permitted. Hiking is restricted to established trails only. Tonto National Monument is part of the National Park Service and preserves an important chapter in prehistory. The visitor center offers an interpretive film and a museum that describes the daily life of the Salado people who once lived here. A picnic area is located one-half mile inside the park entrance. south of Globe towards Tucson and you will see the Pinal Mountains to your right as you climb in elevation to the stupendous views of El Capitan Pass. Several early ranches can be seen past the pass as you head through this historic, picturesque area.

re you dreaming of your next vacation to some exotic locale? Why wait…when right here in our own backyard, there are a multitude of hiking, biking, wildlife watching and photography opportunities? The Round Mountain Park is a municipal park in Globe that offers well-maintained trails that rarely have more than a few hikers at a time. The trails range in difficulty from easy to strenuous, but all offer stupendous views, a variety of wildflowers and cactus and if you take your time, opportunities to see wildlife in their natural habitat. Round Mountain has restrooms and a visitor center with a large map of the trails. The park can be accessed by turning left onto South Street from US 60 (if coming from the west); go through the Maple Street intersection and continue up the hill until the road dead ends at the park entrance. History buffs will thoroughly enjoy the Old Dominion Historic Mine Park in Globe. Easy trails welcome walkers and bike riders and interpretive signage along the trails brings the history of this former copper mine alive. The signs feature old photos, facts and early newspaper articles about the company, one of the early copper mines that helped Arizona prosper. See the foundations from early buildings, use the head frame as background for that ‘perfect’ picture and enjoy the sweeping views from the various overlooks. The OD Park can be reached by turning onto Murphy Street at DeMarco’s Restaurant (a quarter mile east of the chamber offices at 1360 N. Broad Street). Bear to the left and cross the railroad tracks, the park entrance is on your left just past the tracks. Visitors will be able to drive in to park in the designated area, but vehicles are not allowed into the park itself. The park is open from 6am to 6pm and has restrooms, picnic ramadas and benches along the trails, as well as a handicapped-accessible, mining-themed playground for youngsters. Ever seen a coatimundi? How ‘bout a Magnificent Hummingbird, Abert’s Squirrel or Coues Whitetail Deer? Our own Pinal Mountain range here in Globe

has some of the most scenic hiking trails you’ll find in Arizona; for those who can’t hike, the scenic drive up along Forest Road 651 is accessible by car and takes you all the way to 7,800 foot Signal Peak. Six Shooter Canyon Road, where maps are also available). Bring binoculars and your camera - a recent hiker reported two young Coatis that scampered up a tree above the creek that parallels the Six-Shooter Canyon trail, and colorful birds such as Spotted Towhee and Blackthroated Gray Warbler. What’s a Coati, you ask? A woodland cousin to our more familiar raccoon, these small brown omnivores have expanded their range since the 1800s, moving northwards from Mexico, and now inhabit Arizona mountain ranges including the Pinals. They’re agile at tree climbing and will scamper up a nearby Ponderosa Pine if they feel threatened - stamping their feet and huffing to express their displeasure at intruding hikers and dogs once they’ve reached the safety of a branch high above the forest floor.
