As always, it’s filled with very diverse artworks showing the immense artistic abilities of the UCR community, so a huge thank you to all the artists! Anonymous there is a lightness about you and i choke up every time thinking about how goodness is difficult yet deserves to exist despite the goddamn hardships and i am trying to grasp whatever i can but my breaths are heavy and my hands keep shaking while it is still out there reminding me things can be okay.

BACKGROUND STORIES Lament for Man by Kurt van Wyk

On the night of September 3 this year, the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro burned to the ground. Hundreds of years of cultural and natural heritage was lost in just a few hours. A few weeks ago, Jair Bolsonaro was elected as president of Brazil. Bolsonaro is an extreme right-wing politician and, among other flaws, represents a major concern to Brazil’s conservation policy. Having come so far in reducing deforestation, Brazil is now back to a tipping point. In my drawing, the plants/flowers covering the man’s head are all South American endemic species, some of which are of cultural significance. Through this drawing, I wanted to tie the fragile and fleating nature of flowers to the equally fragile and fleating nature of humanity. In destroying the natural world around us, we destroy a core aspect of our shared consciousness. Without an appreciation for the way our environment influences our culture, we are incomplete and, at best, fumbling through life.

Whisper by Manouk Macville

If you want to see the real image, take a picture and invert the colours (you can do this on your phone or online). This way black becomes white, and white becomes black.
