In our 8th edition of the Travel Collection magazine we ran a competition to find a cover photo for our magazine. We were amazed to receive nearly 200 entries which were extremely varied and there were some eye catching, some amusing, and some outstanding entries. After a lot of deliberation we chose Winner Lucy Barrow’s image as our cover and Lucy Barrow she wins a £1000 Kuoni voucher and a print of her winning cover. Lucy heard the news she had won on landing in New York on holiday; she said “I have just got off the plane and am a little dazed and dancing too! That is the best news ever…” Lucy, who lives in St Albans, found out about the competition from friends in Kent. She entered a picture taken on her honeymoon in Mauritius. She hopes to take her husband and daughters Daisy and Maya on a trip of a lifetime to see the Northern Lights with her prize. She said “…as a family we love travelling. We love the buzz of city life as well as the relaxation of the beach” Well, Congratulations Lucy, hopefully the prize will send you on your way. We are all looking forward to seeing your holiday snaps on your return.

A Taste of Turkey

Ölüdeniz - the gem of the Turquoise coast Ölüdeniz is a spectacularly romantic setting, which could be why so many couples choose to get married here. High pine-clad mountains surround an idyllic bay with a long swathe of pale shingle and coarse sand leading to the protected National Park area of the blue lagoon with its sandy beach to one end. This is also the perfect location for a family beach holiday with plenty to see and do. It is a popular resort with numerous lively bars, restaurants and shops alongside the seafront promenade but still retaining an individual charm and offering a warm welcome. There is plenty of choice when it comes to dining out: authentic Turkish and international cuisine, fine dining options, budget options and many places offering

child-friendly menus. Forget your troubles in this hazy, sunblessed resort whilst sunbathing, sipping on a long, cool drink or enjoying one of the many watersports and activities available. Fethiye, only 12kms from Olüdeniz, is an attractive harbour town with a colourful, bustling market to explore and very easily reached by Dolmus (local taxi). Fethiye harbour is the ideal place for a seafront promenade, bustling with fishing boats, gulets and yachts offering a variety of sea based excursions. This charming town has some excellent restaurants and is home to the biggest market in the region - the perfect place to hunt for bargains, hone your bartering skills and stock up on holiday souvenirs.

Wonderful Wildlife Get the most out of the Galapagos The Galapagos Islands are renowned for their friendly wildlife and diversity of species that led to Darwin’s theory of evolution. Located in the Pacific Ocean, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the islands lie on the equator, meaning that they have pleasant and sunny weather all year round. There are over 20 different islands to visit on expedition cruises in comfortable yachts with excursions ashore every morning and afternoon. Excellent Naturalist Guides take small groups (maximum 15 visitors) along narrow trails to admire the variety of landscapes and animal species such as the Giant Tortoise, Waved Albatross, Galapagos Sea Lion, Marine Iguana and Blue Footed and Red Footed Boobies, all of which you can see close up in their natural environment. It was exactly this combination of diversity and proximity that led David Attenborough to make his ground-breaking documentary on the islands. The Galapagos Expedition Cruise vessels range from 16-passenger motor yachts to small expedition ships accommodating up to 90 guests and include all meals and excursions. These yachts offer options to suit your preferences, budget and “boating” experience, whether you would like to stay in a simple wood-panelled cabin on a sailing boat, to a luxury stateroom on an elegant motor yacht. Combine a visit here with the Amazon rainforests or Andean Mountains to create an all encompassing experience of a lifetime.

Fascinating Fjords

Mervyn Willard Tunbridge Wells 01892 511999

Fred. Olsen will take you to the heart of Norway Norwegian Heritage, Norwegian Officers and smaller ships mean we can show you Norway like no – one else. Take the Norwegian Fjords for example – It’s difficult to describe the Norwegian Fjords without doing them a huge injustice, it’s hard to find the words to explain how truly remarkable they are. The scenery is incredibly beautiful, the fresh mountain air invigorating and the history compelling. These stunning, narrow waterways weave throughout the intricate western coast of Norway, showcasing an abundance of natural attractions. Steep snow-capped mountains, magnificent glaciers, pretty meadows, reflective lakes: all of these play their part in making Norway one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Sailing these tranquil and enchanting waterways can make you feel like there’s no-one else on the planet. Pretty chocolate box towns lie in wait along the country’s beautiful coast – bursting with unique culture, charming architecture and wildlife. Famously managed by a Norwegian family and with Norwegian officers on board all our ships, at Fred. Olsen we make full use of this knowledge and expertise, ensuring our Norway itineraries feature more scenic fjord cruising. We don’t just take you from port to port, we take you on a journey to show you the very best of the country. Our smaller ships can take you to the heart of the fjordland’s most magnificent scenery, past spectacular rock formations such as Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and Kjerag, along waterways so narrow that massive mega-ships simply can’t navigate them, and past cascading waterfalls, so close you can almost feel the spray. The journey is as rewarding as the destination. Our itineraries combine calls at a UNESCO listed town such as Geiranger with the hanseatic city of Bergen, featuring cobbled streets and colourful timbered houses. Add to this Flam with an opportunity to experience the stunning views from the Flam Railway which climbs up to almost a thousand metres. Explore the pretty quaint village of Eidfjord or the old town of Kristiansand which is spread over three islands connected by bridges. This is just a small example of the ports available on the diverse range of cruises available with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. If you have never cruised before then a Norwegian Fjord cruise is the ideal itinerary and destination for your first experience. With the combination of stunning scenery, interesting city stays and durations of between 7 – 11 nights there is every opportunity to fall in love with cruising on board a Fred. Olsen ship.

Refined holidays for discerning travellers. Kirker Holidays offers short breaks and tailor-made holidays to destinations throughout Europe and beyond, combining carefully-selected hotels with private transfers, flights from your local airport, rail travel or perhaps the Venice SimplonOrient-Express. Venice has been Kirker’s favourite destination for almost 30 years, and we now feature over 20 individual hotels from 3* pensions to 5* palaces, and a number of privately-run boutique hotels in the

heart of the city. For summer holidays, we recommend the Venice Lido, or perhaps the recently opened St Regis San Clemente Palace, on its own verdant island, situated just 20 minutes from St Mark’s square by complimentary shuttle. All Kirker clients staying in Venice arrive in style by water taxi transfer, a real ‘James Bond’ experience. They will also receive complimentary entrance tickets to the Doge’s Palace – or for those who have been before, tickets to the Accademia or the

Peggy Guggenheim, two of Venice’s great art galleries. Kirker holidays also include the exclusive Kirker Guide Notes to the best restaurants and sightseeing in the city and the services of the Kirker Concierge to arrange private guides, book tickets for the opera at the legendary La Fenice theatre, or reserve a table for a delicious dinner.

Located 400 miles west of Morocco and 600 miles from the European mainland, the islands enjoy a good year round climate, allowing holidays

to Madeira to be enjoyed both in the summer and winter months. The island is 35 miles long and 16 miles wide and its subtropical climate and moderate rainfall provide an environment where lush vegetation prevails and exotic flowers bloom all year. Although there are no golden sand beaches the island boasts a few manmade beaches and there are numerous lidos and wonderful hotel pools overlooking the ocean or situated in magnificent tropical gardens which help to make Madeira holidays an ideal choice of destination for sun worshippers and horticulturalists alike.

Bitesize Barbados

Janet Forward Tunbridge Wells 01892 511999

Tantalise your tastebuds with Caribbean Cuisine It is now 35 years since Caribtours started arranging bespoke holidays to the Caribbean and their love affair with this beautiful part of the world continues…. Beyond the beach the Caribbean has so much more to offer and here Caribtours shares some of the exquisite dining options and culinary delights visitors can enjoy in Barbados; one of their most popular destinations. With its luxury hotels, palm fringed beaches and wonderful choice of activities, it’s no surprise that Barbados remains one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations and if such destinations were contenders for the Masterchef accolade, then Barbados would most definitely

be a front-runner. Serious foodies can appreciate the quality of the food on offer and with a vast array of restaurants you will be spoilt for choice Dining out in Barbados can be smart or barefoot. For real Bajan cuisine Angry Annies and Ragamuffins in Holetown are great fun. Visit old favourites, such as Daphne’s, with its modern Italian twist or the cool and contemporary Lone Star Garage. The elegant new Cin Cin by the Sea is a must for seafood lovers or visit The Cliff which is simply the best restaurant on the island. Finally no trip to Barbados is complete without experiencing the Friday night fish fry at Oistins fishing village down on the south coast of

the island. Here the emphasis is most definitely on laid back rustic dining where tourists and locals alike gather to enjoy fresh fish caught by the fishermen that day and Macaroni Pie (a Bajan staple) whilst dancing and partying under the stars into the early hours No wonder Barbados is considered ‘King’ of the Caribbean for its cuisine. The beauty is that you can sit under the canopy of stars, listen to the gentle lapping of the sea, eat the most amazing food and discover taste sensations that you never knew existed. Bon appetite!

Viva Cuba Discover the true essence and rhythm of this fascinating country

Sue Cook Uckfield 01825 760488

Think of Cuba and your mind might conjure up images of Havana, inextricably linked with Hemmingway’s legacy of mojitos and daiquiris, of classic 1950s cars maintained with loving ingenuity, stunning colonial architecture and wide squares that throb to the constant beat of live music pouring out of open doorways. Whilst it’s true that Cuba embodies all these unforgettable impressions, there is so much more to this feisty and fascinating country. No visit to Cuba would be complete without exploring Havana, but there are plenty more memories to be made away from the beaten tourist trail on one of Saga’s unforgettable Cuban tours… Located close to the western-most coast of Cuba, the Viñales Valley is spectacularly lush; not only is the flora that thrives on the rich red soil remarkable, but keen eyes may also spot darting hummingbirds. Peppering the verdant countryside you’ll find huge limestone caves called mogotes, which look like long-forgotten marbles dropped by a giant and left to become part of the landscape – only adding to a fairytale atmosphere that you’ll find hard to forget. If you prefer the city life, then head to Cienfuegos. This UNESCO World Heritage Site might not be quite what you expect from a Cuban city – founded in 1819 by the French rather than the Spanish, the Gallic influence can still be seen today in certain cultural traditions and architecture. With wide streets and sparkling beaches, you’ll find the pace of life here slow and relaxing – the perfect location in which to unwind! If the French influence is palpable in Cienfuegos, then the atmosphere in Cuba’s second city, Santiago de Cuba, is decidedly Caribbean; a bustling city jam-packed with a riot of colour, music and life, it’s certainly a must-see. You can discover the delights of Cuba with Saga, who have been creating holidays and cruises exclusively for the over-50s for more than 60 years. Their meticulously planned long-haul holidays provide incredible value and even include their popular VIP door-to-door travel service so you can start your holiday in style. Ask your local Baldwins Travel Group branch for more details and you will soon be saying Hola! To Cuba.
