Raring2go! PARTIES

5 steps to a more sustainable children’s party Children’s birthday parties are a lot of fun but can also create a lot of waste. Here are a few tips to make your next celebration a little more eco-friendly.

1. Send e-invitations Virtually everyone asks for a text or email RSVP nowadays so why not save on paper and invite your party goers in a What’s App group or Facebook event?

2. Cut out the waste No one wants to spend ages tidying up afterwards! Use compostable tableware or did you know that you can hire reusable tableware Florence & Burt even do the washing up for you!

4. Recycle decorations Hire decorations so that they get reused and consider biodegradable latex balloons like those from Pom Poms Party or, if you have foil ones, remember that these can be recycled.

5. Plastic-free party bags How often do those bags full of goodies end up, a few days later, as a collection of plastic nick-nacks that no one is interested in? How about replacing the plastic with an Easter Egg or a book? Florence & Burt offer a range of plastic-free eco party bags and Henley Chocolates have a selection of treats with plastic-free packaging.

3. Have a plan for left-over food It can be tricky to cater for tastes and judge portion sizes. Try making individual lunch boxes with a pre-ordered sandwich filler or make sure any leftovers will keep for school lunches or can be frozen.

Raring2go! BOOK REVIEWS

New and exciting books for Spring There are lots of new and exciting books coming out this spring, and there is something fun for everyone! Tamsin Rosewell of Kenilworth Books rounds up a few of the great books to look out for.

Ghoul Scouts, Camp Croak by Taylor Dolan In this story Lexie is dropped off at the wrong summer camp by her distracted grandmother, and all sorts of chaos ensues…but Lexie is made of stern stuff - she becomes part of the Ghoul Scout Summer. She and her new friends (a werewolf, a ghost, a voodoo zombie) soon have a challenge on their hands when Scoutmaster Euphemia Vile appears, determined to make these gruesome scouts behave in just the way she wants… £6.99 paperback

I'm Sticking with You by Smriti Halls and Steve Small One to look out for this May, I'm Sticking with You tells the story of a friendship - between a bear and a squirrel, and the squirrel is determined that they will be friends! 'Wherever you're going, I'm going too. Whatever you're doing, I'm sticking with you.’ It's wonderful to have good friends to see you through the good times and the bad. But sometimes, friends can also be a bit . . . well . . . overbearing! This is a gorgeously warm, funny book about everything a friendship can be – for anyone who's ever had a determined friend. £6.99 paperback and £12.99 hardback.

I Don't Like Books. Never. Ever. The End. Emma Perry and Sharon Davey Like many children Mabel is given lots of books, but she does NOT want to read them, no she really does not like books at all! She is going to ignore them completely as she has no interest. But one day, the books very quietly get their own revenge. They entice her in.. would Mabel like to travel on a spaceship....oh no, she wouldn't because she doesn't like books. Well would she like to know how the detective solves the mystery.. Oh no, she wouldn't because she doesn't like books.. Who'd like the chance to

accompany a knight on a quest.. Oh no it won't be Mabel because...Mabel Does Not Like Books. Never. EVER. The End. Hardback £12.99

What the Ladybird Heard at the Seaside Lydia Monks and Julia Donaldson New out this April from the team that brought us Sharing a Shell and What The Ladybird Heard. It is full of sparkly sea creatures, including a magical mermaid, and plenty of seaside fun, and also has glitter on every page for little fingers to explore while you read to them. The clever little ladybird we know so well is off on a trip to the seaside, but those two bad men, Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len, are up to their wicked ways again. This time they're planning to steal the mermaid's long, luscious hair and sell it to a famous star . . . luckily, the crime-busting ladybird has another cunning plan to stop the thieves! £12.99 Hardback

Diary of a Young Naturalist Dara McAnulty New out in May from independent publisher and nature specialist, Little Toller, The Diary of a Young Naturalist is written by an autistic young teenager with a knowledge and passion for the natural world. Illustrated with photographs from his own family outing, this book will inspire both adults and older children. These vivid, evocative and moving diary entries about his connection to wildlife and the way he sees the world are raw in their telling, portraying Dara’s intense connection to the natural world, and his perspective as a teenager juggling exams and friendships alongside a life of campaigning. £16.00 Hardback

IMAGINE

CAN YOU WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO NOT HAVE YOUR OWN BED? We estimate there could be as many as 400,000 children in the UK for whom this is the reality. They are sleeping on the floor, or sharing with parents or siblings. Buttle UK is a national children’s charity. What we do is very simple. We pay for everyday things that struggling families cannot afford. That could be anything from a bed for a child without one, to a laptop so a homeless teenager can start their first college course. The legacy left to us by our founder, Frank Buttle, means we can cover our own administration costs. So every penny of a gift will go directly to a family that really needs it.
