Celebrating Success!

We are so proud of all the dancers in our LoveBallet Family, but recently we have had some wonderful successes amongst our pupils. Two of our pupils recently auditioned for the Royal Ballet Associate Scheme in Birmingham. There were 7 places available and, from hundreds of entries, they both secured a place. We are so excited to be part of their dream. This summer has been a busy one with pupils on various professional dance schemes across the country, including Elmhurst Ballet School – alongside pupils invited from across the world. We pride ourselves on our Dance Teaching, from those that wish to dance as a hobby, to gain confidence, believe in themselves and have fun, to those who would like to dance professionally. We teach all genres across many locations in Warwickshire from Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Musical Theatre, Acro Gymnastics & Acrobatic Arts, Cheerleading, Street Dance, Funky Dance, Boys Street, Adult Classes and Baby Classes too. Come along for a free trial, we would love to welcome you.

Helping children of all abilities to succeed in secondary school! September brings with it a new class or even a move to a di erent school for your child. For some, this is a very exciting time; at Explore Learning we hear our students chatting away about moving to ‘big school’ and planning trips to buy new uniforms and stationery. For others, you can see they are a little more anxious. Even those that are very con dent ask questions about what it will be like when they move schools. How will they be able to tackle the new, harder work? It’s important to talk to children about what they are excited about as well as what they are concerned about. Let them know that it is ok to be worried about change, but it’s also good to take on a new challenge and confront their fears by trying new things.

It’s really important to remember that if you don’t get your rst choice of school, there will be other options. Keep an open mind - and try not to show any concerns you have about a school to your child. Moving schools or class can result in your child missing their friends. Ask them questions about new people they have met to encourage them to make new friends. Arrange to meet up with their old class mates outside of school so they can still see them. Their new teacher will have had information about your child from their previous teacher, however if there is something you feel is important that the teacher knows about your child, do drop them a letter/e-mail or ask for a quick chat.

We’ve put together some top tips for the new school year. Talk to families who already go your child’s new school and arrange a visit if you’ve not already been. You may nd the school is the perfect place for your child. You can put your child’s name on the waiting list for the school you want to go to. This is no guarantee, but not everyone takes up the place they have been o ered so you may get a place through the waiting list.

Keep them organized! Get your child to check their timetable each night and pack everything they need for the next day one less thing for them to worry about.

Books for an autumn evening! Raring2go! BOOK ReVIeWs

The season is mists and darkening evenings! We’ve chosen a selection of great books with which you can curl up this autumn!

Amelia Fang and the Lost Yeti Treasures

By Laura Ellen Anderson If you haven’t found this delightful series of illustrated books yet, you have a treat in store! Amelia (who is half fairy and half vampire!) and her friends are thrilled to be invited to her Yeti friend, Florence’s 350th Birthday party. When the treasures of the ancient Yeti culture go missing, their friend Tagine becomes prime suspect. Can Amelia solve the mystery and save her friend before the tunnels of Yei Mountain collapse? £6.99 paperback

Gangster School: Gruffles and the Killer Sheep

By Kate Wiseman and Isla Bousfield-Donohoe We love the antics that go on at Gangster School, Blaggards! In this third instalment it is Crimicon, the annual meeting of promising young criminals held at a rival school. Can Milly and Charlie keep their School’s reputation as the best school for criminals, steer clear of the evil Head of Crumley’s, and keep Charlie’s stinky dog out of harm’s way? What is the purpose of the mysterious machine hidden in the school basement? £6.99 paperback

The Mist Monster

By Kirsti Beautyman Penny isn’t sure she likes her new house, but then she encounters Morris, a funny white monster made of mist. She is whisked away on an adventure and discovers that new friends can pop up where you least expect them! Children aged 2+ (and their adults) will adore this gorgeously illustrated, magical adventure! £6.99 paperback

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Illustrated Edition)

By J.K. Rowling and Jim Kay A new, fully illustrated edition of the best-selling fourth book in JK Rowling’s phenomenal Harry Potter series! Illustrator Jim Kay uses paint, pencil

26

and pixels to bring breath-taking scenes and unforgettable characters to life. This beautiful hardback fizzes with magic and brims with humour as Harry finds himself competing in the Triwizard Cup. A great classic for every family bookshelf!

£32 Hardback (on offer at Kenilworth Books!)

Usborne book of Money for Beginners

By Eddie Reynolds, Matthew Oldham and Marco Bonatti Following the success of Usborne’s excellent Politics for Beginners – they have now created a book that looks at everything from how money is printed, to how economics has shaped the world! A lot has been written about Money – does it make the world go around? Does it grow on trees? Is it the root of all evil? This book cuts through the myths and misconceptions and gives young readers a clear and accessible introduction to money. A great book for all school libraries! £9.99 Hardback

Sawbones and Blade and Bone

Two books by Catherine Johnson For older readers: A political adventure, that weaves the emerging science of the Enlightenment into the tense politics of London society. Through Ezra McAdam, a young black apprentice to one of the most enlightened surgeons of the time, we see tangled, political and multi-cultural London on the cusp of the 18th and 19th centuries. A series of apparently unconnected murders come to the attention of the young surgeon and they cut into his life dramatically. In the second book, Blade and Bone, our hero heads into France in a desperate search for his friends, surrounded by the terror of the French Revolution. We’d recommend it to adult book groups as well as the older children and teens it was published for. There is so much to discuss! £7.99 each – paperback. Book reviews are written for Raring2go! by Tamsin Rosewell of Kenilworth Books, Talisman Square, Kenilworth CV8 1JB

Cinnamon Roll Cookies When I found out National Baking week was in October I thought I would get out my Cinnamon Roll Cookie recipe. It’s a particular favourite of mine and its great because you can prepare a batch in advance and freeze the mixture. You should be able to get about 36 cookies from this recipe which sounds a lot but believe me, a few with a cuppa or as a snack and they soon disappear!

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

281g Plain our 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 170g unsalted butter, room temperature 150g granulated sugar 1 large egg, at room temperature 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Filling • 15g butter, melted and slightly cooled • 50g granulated sugar • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon Icing • 120g icing sugar • 45ml milk • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

METHOD

1 Make the dough: Whisk the our, baking powder, and salt together. Set aside. 2 Using a hand mixer or a stand mixer tted with paddle attachment, beat the butter for 1 minute on high speed until creamy. On medium-high speed, beat in the granulated sugar until completely creamed and smooth, about 2 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla extract and beat on high until combined, about 1 minute. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. 3 Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix on low until combined. If the dough still seems too soft, you can add 1 tablespoon more our until it is a better consistency for rolling. 4 Shape and ll: Divide the dough into 2 equal parts. Roll each portion out in a rectangle (about 230mm × 180mm) onto

a oured silicone baking mat (or oured parchment paper) to about 6mm thickness. Spread 1 tablespoon of melted butter onto each rectangle. Mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon together then sprinkle evenly over each. 5 Working slowly, tightly roll up each rectangle into a 230mm log. If the dough is cracking at all, use your ngers to smooth it out. Some cracks are OK. Chill the logs of dough for at least 2 hours. What I like to do is carefully transfer the logs to a cutting board or plate and cover loosely with plastic wrap. 6 Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. 7 Remove dough logs from the. Cut into 12mm slices. Place slices onto baking sheets about 50mm apart. 8 Bake for 10-11 minutes, until lightly browned on the sides. Remove from the oven, allow to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before icing. 9 Make the icing: Whisk all the icing ingredients together. Drizzle over cookies. Cover and store cookies at room temperature for up to 5 days. Notes: Make Ahead Instructions: Baked cookies (without icing) freeze well for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge. You can chill the cookie dough for up to 2 days (step 5). You can also freeze the cookie dough before rolling for up to 3 months. Allow to thaw overnight in the fridge, then bring to room temperature for about 1 hour. Then roll and continue with the recipe as directed.

We’re so excited to tell you that Katie Cooper, our resident Raring2go! Chef, is now working under the watchful eye of Brummie Michelin Star Chef, Glynn Purnell. She’s due to take her exams at the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts nals later in the year, which we’re sure she’ll smash, given the wonderful ideas she provides us with. We wish her every success with her new Boss, and her exams!
