I started Rare Dirndl because, as an active member of the German community in Chicago, I was so disappointed to see that Germany’s dirndl designs were lightyears ahead of the designs coming out of the US. So, I decided to change that! I am committed to bringing you high-quality dirndls, menswear, blouses and accessories that are fashion forward, yet still give a nod to the Bavarian, Austrian and Swiss Alpine traditions. Chicago celeb Whitney Reynolds and her huddy are all smiles in their Rare Dirndl clothing. The mix of the traditional combination paired with the bold and modern fabrics is perfect for this young couple! I have such a girl crush on Emma Watson, so this picture of her in a dirndl makes me so happy! It is hard to tell who the designer of her dirndl is, but it looks like a pretty generic dirndl and it might even be a vintage dirndl.
Simply put, Katy Perry looks fabulous in this dirndl! Love the colors that she chose because it feels very Katy but doesn’t over do it. This look makes me super happy. She’s owning this girly yet edgy dirndl and the pops of color against the black and white polka dots are exquisite.

5 Most Magnificent Castles in Germany
(in our opinion)
I’ve traveled to Germany a few times in my life and I’ve had the joy of visiting a few wonderful castles. Although I haven’t had the privilege of visiting all of the following castles that made my list, I sure hope to visit them all one day! #5: Reichsburg Castle Built around 1000 by a palatinate count, it was nearly destroyed in the 17th century when French King Louis XIV invaded the region. The castle was rebuilt in 1868 in the Neo-Gothic style. It towers above the scenic town of Cochem on the Moselle River. Although I have not seen this castle in person and some travel guides don’t think this castle is as “authentic” as others, the style and overall impressiveness of this castle is what makes it my #5.
#4: Linderhof Palace Plans for this castle began in 1868 by Ludwig II and in 1886 the final rebuilding phase was set in motion, however he didn’t live to see the completion of his new bedroom. Although this palace is much smaller than King Louis XIV’s palace at Versailles, it is clear that Ludgwig II used Versailles as inspiration for Linderhof. Located in Ettal Germany, not far from Oberammergau, this palace has multiple buildings and the grounds surrounding the main building are simply gorgeous. I’ve been able to visit Schloss Linderhof twice (one time it was being rejuvenated so they had a big tarp over the front of it) but the 2nd time I went with the American Aid Society Jugendgruppe I was able to fully enjoy the sheer opulence of this castle. This is what made it my #4! 16

#3: Schwerin Castle Since as early as the 10th century, Schloss Schwerin sits on an island in the main lake at Schwerin. For many centuries, it was home to the grand dukes of Mecklenburg. Today the castle serves as a museum and as a government building for the MecklenburgVorpommern state parliament. A fun fact about the Schwerin Castle is that Petermännchen, the resident ghost who has been spotted wearing 17th century garb, makes this castle a great place for those with an interest in the paranormal. With its many towers and turrets, this castle is considered a prime example of Europe’s historicist architecture and what makes this my #3 pick. Someday I hope I will be able to visit this amazing castle for myself… but until then and I think Zak, Nick and Aaron from Ghost Adventures should spend the night. #2: Hohenzollern Castle Sitting atop Mount Hohenzollern, the Schloss had its beginnings in the 11th century. Over the centuries, the original castle was destroyed leaving only the chapel behind. The current castle structure was built in the mid-19th century by King Frederick William IV of Prussia. Located 30 miles (50 km) south of Stuttgart, the castle is the ancestral home of the Hohenzollern family. Today the castle is a truly unique museum. Filled with treasures including the crown worn by Prussian kings and a uniform worn by Frederick the Great, the Hohenzollern castle is one of the most visited castles in Germany. Although I myself have never been, the sheer beauty and awe-inspiring location is what makes it my #2 castle. #1: Neuschwanstein Castle Neuschwanstein is one of the most magnificent castles in Germany (and actually most photographed building in Germany). (I mean even Disney thought it was marvelous enough to try and replicate for Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Disney World!) Unlike most castles, Schloss Neuschwanstein was not designed or built for defensive purposes. It was created simply as a fancy schmancy retreat for Ludwig II of Bavaria. It sits quietly among the Bavarian Alps near the town of Füssen. I’ve been to Neuschwanstein multiple times and each time it was more awesome than the time before. There is just something about this castle that takes my breath away and that’s why it’s my #1 most magnificent castle in Germany!

Kreimer’s Bier Haus - Cleves, OH

While I was in Cincinnati for an event, I had the pleasure of dining at Kreimer’s Bier Haus. Kreimer’s is located at 6052 OH-128 in Cleves, Ohio. Kreimer’s Bier Haus is one of the most unique German restaurants I’ve ever been too. It’s located in Cleves, Ohio right on the Great Miami River. The decor was very rustic and medieval with some fabulous German accents thrown in. While we were waiting for a table, Jen showed me around the property and through the restaurant which was like a maze. Little nooks and tables in hidden spaces and a whole section of the restaurant that faced the river and I can only imagine what it would look like in the summer when all the trees are green! The outdoor area is like its own little town with what looked like a rib shack, a mini bier hall, a few gazebos and fire pits with chairs for people to just relax. I would love to go back in the summer and enjoy the atmosphere of that outdoor area for myself because it looks like it would be amazing. To start, I ordered the Kreimer’s Amber, which is an amber beer brewed just for the restaurant. It was good. Nothing extraordinary, but it was a tasty beer. We ordered potato skins as an appetizer and they were super tasty and crispy, everything you want from a great potato skin. For an entree, I ordered the Sauerbraten Ribeye. It was “Kreimer’s thick hand cut ribeye smothered in our house-made schwein sauce. Served with sauerkraut, a vegetable and a handmade potato pancake topped with cinnamon apples”. When it came to the table my first thought was, “well that steak is as big as my face!” I was expecting the sauce to be more of a sauerbraten style gravy, but the “schwein sauce” was more of a sweet steak sauce. The steak itself was perfectly cooked. The sauerkraut was good, sour, but didn’t taste like it just came out of a can. The potato pancake was not my favorite, more of a fluffy pancakey style. The broccoli was typical german style veggies… just boiled, but I dipped them in Nick’s Bier Cheese that he ordered and boy oh boy did that make the broccoli better! It was salty, spicy and simply yummy! Overall, I had a wonderful experience at Kreimer’s and I would love to go back in the summertime to experience the outdoor area in all its glory and try some more of the food because the menu had me wanting so many different things. - Erika Neumayer

Bridal and Bridesmaids Dirndls One of the newest trends in the American Dirndl market is Bridal and Bridesmaids dirndls. This past year, Rare Dirndl has provided so many brides with a dirndl that not only fits their body type, but also fits their personal style! For some brides, it is important that they incorporate their German, Austrian or Swiss heritage into their big day. While others prefer to have an Oktoberfest themed rehearsal dinner and invite all their guests to dress up as well. “We truly had the perfect day!! Our ceremony was short and sweet with the sweetest words shared in our vows to each other. Steve and I danced the night away with our family and friends. As a designer, I found it so refreshing that most brides who wanted a Bridal Dirndl insisted on incorporating color into their dirndls. In most instances, they decided have their dirndl match the wedding colors, but this also allowed them to wear the dress again for another event like Oktoberfest! “We decided to have a German themed wedding rehearsal in honor of my German heritage! Bridal Dirndls have been trending in Southern Germany for some time now, but this past year or so was the first time I began to see this trend really taking shape in the U.S. Most of the brides I encountered had been part of a German Club or had ties to the German community. They also incorporated other aspects of their heritage into their wedding day such as having a whole roasted pig for dinner, inviting their dance group to perform, or having a German Band. Other brides simply felt more comfortable in a dirndl then a strapless beaded mermaid gown. Bridal dirndls range in price from $550-$900, while the national average for a wedding dress is close to $1,300... not to mention alterations! When more and more brides started coming to me looking for a dirndl to wear on their wedding day, I was very nervous. It’s a big deal, and everyone knows about the dreaded Bridezilla! But the truth is, I LOVE working with my brides. They are such a pleasure because their excitement is contagious. Then, seeing the pictures after everything is finished is the very best part of my job! But brides aren’t the only ones enjoying the dirndl trend, their bridesmaids are getting in on the action too! Since they are made to order, the bride gets to choose exactly what color will work best with not only her wedding, but will also suit her favorite ladies. incorporated our Donauschawaben and Swiss heritage into our big day. Little things like adding rosemary into all the floral arrangements (including a sprig for all the guests), schnitzel and homemade German wurst for appetizers, plenty of polkas and waltzes to dance to, homemade German cookies for dessert, and of course dirndls! Over the past year and a half when someone found out I was engaged, the first thing they asked was “Are you making your dress?” followed by “Is it a dirndl!?” My answer was: Yes, I’m making it and it’s half dirndl, half gown. For me, when I closed my eyes, I didn’t see myself getting married in a dirndl. It may sound cliche, but I’ve been thinking about my wedding dress since I was a little girl… and it wasn’t a dirndl. However, I turned it into a dirndl for the reception! I knew I wanted my bridesmaids to wear dirndls. All of them were very excited about the dirndls mostly because they said, “Now these are bridesmaid dresses we will definitely wear again!” They all looked stunning next to the groomsmen in their charcoal tuxes. The reception kicked off with a bang and everyone enjoyed their dinners. After I danced the Schneewaltzer with my Dad, it was time to ditch the poofy skirt and put on my apron. I made a light grey beaded lace apron with charcoal ribbon apron ties for the reception. It was great to have a “party dirndl” for the rest of the evening and we sure did party!
