Project Description

Ij tunnel

The aim of the project is to create a building which can be used 24 hours for different activities, with the focus on young start-up new bridge companies. Flexibility and transformability are used to allow the building to host different activities in one space and make it easily changeable to the rapidly changing environment of start-up companies and entrepreneurs. By transforming specific areas of the building for sports and leisure functions at times when these spaces are not needed for working the building becomes a vivid place all

6

around the clock. All the functional spaces, like workspaces, common areas, atrium service functions, etc. are divided into static and transformable spaces. Static spaces are fixed and stay in its function usable all around the clock. The Transformer spaces are areas that are not used for the whole time for working use and so they can be transformed to serve for different purposes. The goal of that transformer spaces is to make the building as alive and vibrant as possible, to attract active people that want to start their own company.

Urban Concept

1 the current state: the area is quiet difficult to access and the buildings don’t really have an orientation

2 make the area better accessible by making a bridge from the Nemo and transforming one of the buildings into a vibrant start-up factory which includes public functions like sports facilities and restaurants

3 after the transformation a start-up campus could evolve along the axis of the public space between the start-up factory

4 the campus could grow along the central park like axis and also into the other directions. The buildings of the campus would have a clear orientation towards the campus lawn

makes the water evaporate and cools the houses on the tower. In the basin the water gets filtered and can be used for a swimming pool under the basin, after this it goes into the ground for recharging the groundwater basin. A small and a big tower are designed to show the different possibilities to use this system. The big tower consists of multible houses in different sizes that are sitting along a spiral staircase. On two floors the houses have different spaces of various qualities, from private to public. Public spaces in the corners allow views from all directions to the valley and to the mountains. The stair ends on a big public square on the top of the tower. The small tower consists of a winter and a summer house. The winter house is left completely open to the outside, only curtains provide privacy for the inhabitants. The summer house is made of massive walls with only minimal openings to protect from the heat. Shortcuts between the two houses allow quick changes from house to house.

water natural cooling Water from the wash is collected in a watertank and provides the water for the water basin inside the tower. The wind, which gets catched on the top of the tower in a huge opening with a controlling mechanism to regulate the air-flow, goes downto the base of the tower. There it makes the water evaporating and is used for cooling the houses. The water gets filtered and is used for a swimming pool and after this it goes back into the ground and recharges the groundwater basin.

P

inside the houses a opening for ventilaion connects the houses to the wind catcher tower, lamelles control how much the house is ventilated. A opening at the outer wall sucks the exhaust air out. Lamelles at the windows provide shades and protect from the sun and still allow the view over the valley.

Sodafabriek

MSc 1 Heritage & Architecture Studio teachers: Alexander der Ridder, Wido Quist 21

Project Description The Sodafabriek was built in Schiedam in the beginning of the 19th century as warehouses and was used during the centuries as a malt house and later as the name giving soda factory. The location of the complex is situated on the river Schie in a backyard of a residential area.

22

The riverbank gets activated by placing the entrance and a cafe with a roof terrace there.

The two warehouses contain platforms with workspaces

The current roof is in a very bad condition and had to be replaced. I decided not to build the roof in exactly the same shape like the old one, because it should be visible that the building contains new functions and the roof

Work

The two warehouses contain workspaces for creative industries, the conept is that a small start-up firm or a single person can rent a platform or only a desk and they all share the common areas and functions, like secretary and bathrooms and a workshop. So there can be a lot of communication between the firms under one roof. Next to the warehouses is a cafĂŠ under the terrace and restaurant, so there is a relationship between work time and after work time.
