Randy Larcombe Photographer For the cover of this year’s book, I chose an image from our collaboration with the Eyre Regional Development Board. This project was our perfect assignment. For Suzi, there was a large component of production and styling, and for me, one week in the studio shooting seafood then another week on location on the beautiful Eyre Peninsula, shooting portraits of the fisherman. Our favourite assignments are those which require a lot of our creative input. This one and also the shoot for Jamshop/Uni SA (opposite page) are good examples of working closely with a client to develop a look that becomes the signature of a campaign.

Another highlight for me this year was working on the fashion for the Advertiser Enterprises magazines. I am not widely known for my fashion work, but these magazines give me a platform to explore this genre with a lot of creative freedom. Working with Khai Liew and Alistair Trung was particularly rewarding and an opportunity to learn from Alistair’s ‘no fear’ approach, balanced with the thoughtful reflections of Khai. Over the last year much of our personal project time was spent developing the art of short films and working out the technical complexities this involves. I see this an adjunct to my stills work where I can explore my love of visual storytelling in other ways. I always have some kind of personal project on the go. Recently I have been documenting the electricity substations that exist below our feet in the city of Adelaide. I have a weird fascination for industrial architecture and this project was the perfect vehicle to satisfy that. Exhibiting some of these images in October at AP Bond Gallery was a great reminder that other people share this fascination and love finding beauty in strange places.
