Let CarePartners Estate Sales make this a smooth transition...

M

any of us have the same dilemma. A house filled with things that we don’t know what to do with. Some are treasures, some have more emotions connected to them than monetary worth, and some items just need to find new families to love them. Gleyn Hoffman had items inherited from various family members. “I didn’t want to have a garage sale,” she said, “And I was a little nervous about placing items on Craigslist. I knew that some of the items had more than just sentimental value.

Someone recommended that I call Brent at CarePartners Estate Sales. After our first meeting, I knew that their service matched our needs. The volunteers from CarePartners came to the house and carefully packed up the things and moved them to the showroom so they could be included in an upcoming sale,” she said. Hoffman was happy with the outcome. “One of the antique broaches that I thought was just costume jewelry was much more valuable than I expected.” “The estate sales are a new concept in fundraising,” said Brent

Wyatt, Estate Sales Manager for the CarePartners Foundation. “The service assists families that need to divest of belongings after the loss of a loved one, liquidate assets after a divorce, or just help people who want to downsize. We sell the items at an estate sale, and the proceeds are split between the seller and CarePartners.” The first step to selling belongings is to schedule an in-home consultation, which is completely free of charge. The estate sale process is not like an auction. “We work with three local appraisers,” Wyatt said. “That way the seller and the foundation know exactly what we are selling and can get the best price.” The days of the estate sales are posted, and items are sold at a first come, first serve basis. Some of the more memorable items that have sold at the estates sales are a Roycroft vase, a pump organ, and a toy cap gun. What they thought was just your run of the mill toy cap gun turned out to be a limited edition, Gene Autry cap gun with ivory handles. “This is why working with the appraisers is so important,” instructs Wyatt. “That piece could have easily been sold for far less than what it was worth.” The estate sales conducted by the CarePartners Foundation aren’t like any other estate sales.

Furniture, antiques, housewares, and paintings are all placed in room specific vignettes composed by volunteer Judy McCracken. “Judy has the vision, and we move the furniture to create her vision,” quips Sally Crutchfield, special events director for the CarePartners Foundation. Judy McCracken started volunteering after her father passed away. “It’s a way for me to pay hospice back for all of the care they gave my father,” she said. After my first day, I was hooked. My husband even volunteers,” she notes. Both Hospice Treasures and the showroom for the estate sales are located at 105 Fairview Road. The space is just off Sweeten Creek Road in Asheville and is almost twice the size. “It’s a great space for us. The showroom is centrally located and has plenty of parking for Estate Sales and Hospice Treasures,” says Sally Crutchfield. The proceeds from the CarePartners Estate Sales and Hospice Treasures go back to the community. It assists with Health Services, the Rehabilitation Hospital, In-Home Nursing, Hospice, and Adult Day Services. For more information, visit the website at carepartnersfoundation.org, or contact Brent at 828.277.6840 or 828.777.0773.

A

cup of coffee enjoyed in the garden can make for a relaxing morning. However, that java can also be a pick-me-up for your landscape. Coffee and tea byproducts can be used in and around the garden to act as a slow-release fertilizer and a main component of compost. Like leaves left to decompose in the garden, coffee grounds when dispersed thinly in the soil, can be an amendment and add nutrients back into the ground. Consider these uses for grounds:

Like leaves left to decompose in the garden, coffee grounds can add nutrients back into the ground.

• Add to compost piles (filters and all) along with tea bags to make an all-natural, rich source of energy for plants. • Dilute with water to make a fastacting fertilizer. • Use in soil for houseplants or in

vegetable beds. • Some people believe that coffee grounds can help repel pests, such as snails and slugs. • If your garden needs more nitrogen, definitely turn to coffee. Nitrogen is essential for plant leaf development. • Plants that thrive in acidic soil such as pines, evergreens, blueberries, raspberries, roses, azaleas, gardenias, ferns, rhododendrons, lily-ofthe-valley, and even marigolds, can benefit from coffee grounds which slightly lower the pH of the soil. • Feed the coffee grounds to garden worms. It seems they love to consume them. Worm excrement in the garden is beneficial, as is the aeration provided by tunnelling worms. ■ METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION

Do-It-Yourself decorating techniques

R

achel Ashwell, designer of Simply Shabby Chic, shares a few common home-decorating pitfalls and suggests easy ways to combat them. Find the Light Turn overhead lights off, and purchase an array of lighting such as table lamps, sconces, and floor lamps. A trio of light sources, positioned at different heights, will create flattering pools of light. A mix of lighting styles will provide brighter wattage for reading and a softer glow for ambience. If you do choose an overhead light source, install dimmer switches so you have the flexibility of going from romantic to practical. Pack Rat Tendencies Once a year, make it a priority to nix the clutter. If you don’t use it, lose it. If your heartstrings tug on an item, remind yourself that by donating it to charity, someone else can enjoy and benefit from it. When de-cluttering your home, keep beauty, comfort, and function as your criteria. There are many attractive and affordable storage solutions that work within a budget. Items such as decorative boxes or storage ottomans serve as double duty, adding to a room’s decor and helping to keep the room organized. Measure It A tape measure is your best friend. Before heading to the store for decorative furnishings, measure the space you are intending to place your purchase in, as well as doorways and halls, which will allow for an easy move-in. Proportions are also an important consideration. A huge bed will overwhelm a small room, just as a little table against a vast wall can look lost. When you add measurements to your shopping list, you’ll be happier with the end result. Furniture Flub One of the most common home-decorating blunders is to place furniture against walls. Leave some space between the wall and pieces of furniture so

they can “breathe” and allow the room to look larger. Clustering chairs together creates an intimate setting. Simply Chic Less is always so much more. Invest in a few key pieces, but don’t buy things just to fill space. It’s always safe to purchase large furniture in solid colors. Variations of color, tone, and texture are more interesting and soothing than jarring prints and loud, diverse colors. Let complementary hues on walls and neighboring textiles tie everything together.

Add unique, personal touches with decorative pillows and colorful artwork. Look to the Windows Curtains or decorative window coverings are a beautiful way to define the tone, style, and palette of a room. For example, whimsical lace panels create a different effect than silks or plush velvets which evoke a warm, formal feel. If your windows are nonstandard sizes, place each curtain’s tension rod at the same distance from the ceiling to create an illusion of windows at the same height. Details

are also important. Rod pocket curtains, blinds, Roman shades, and drapes help define a room’s feeling. The color of the hardware

Healthy gardening

S

Thanks to raised bed gardening systems, it’s nearly effortless to assemble a raised garden bed and is easy to maintain.

Create a tranquil feature with a koi pond

Dig a hole, fill it with water, and watch your koi grow. That’s the secret to your koi pond, right? Actually, much like a pool or indoor aquarium, koi require some work. In fact, koi are quite sensitive fish that require a carefully maintained environment for optimal health. Koi are colorful fish that go by the name nishikigoi in Japanese. They are a specially-bred form of carp, not oversized goldfish, enjoyed for their vivid coloring. In the 19th century,

Japanese farmers began breeding decorative carp, selecting brightlycolored specimens to ornament gardens in luxurious fish pools. The Japanese consider koi good luck. There are certain varieties that are preferred over others. Kohaku — the favorite — are white-skinned koi with a red upper pattern. Tancho are white koi with a red dot on their heads. Koi are cool-water fish that prefer a deep pond. In the warmer

weather they will swim to the bottom of the pond to avoid the heat. When planning on establishing a koi pond, keep the temperature in mind. You may also want to plan your pond in an area that is shaded from direct sunlight to moderate the water temperature even more. Think about installing a koi pond as you would a home aquarium, complete with a filtration system. This will help you maintain a clean environment for the fish. Routine skimming of the water surface can catch debris that falls into the water which can contaminate the delicate ecosystem of the pond. Koi should be protected overhead from predators. Therefore, koi ponds generally feature lush foliage for their protection. Rocks or overhangs under which koi can hide are features you should include. An algaecide is also a necessity

to prevent the overgrowth of algae in the pond. Consider special water additives sold at pet stores or on-line that can enhance the water environment for your koi. Because koi generally like to swim unseen, their type of food is a floating pellet, which encourages the fish to come to the surface. This way you can assess whether the fish look healthy. Koi can even be trained to recognize humans and take food from your hand. Start small with your koi pond. One or two fish is adequate. Experts recommend one small or mediumsized koi per 500 gallons of water. If you have too many fish, their waste can contaminate the water if not properly filtered. For more information on caring for your koi pond in winter, there are many helpful tips on-line.

A koi pond can be a relaxing hobby and a wonderful accent point for your backyard. ■ METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION

Green cleaning

W

hile green cleaning products might be the new trend, green cleaning really begins with basic cleaning techniques. Prevention is key. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) recommends the following tips to help keep dust, soil, and contaminants to a minimum and decrease the need for cleaning products: 1. Use entry mats outside your home, and always wipe shoes before entering. 2. Remove your shoes at the front door. 3. Vacuum at least twice a week. 4. Use a high-efficiency HVAC filter (not fiberglass), and change every month. 5. Have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year by a qualified specialist. 6. Get water leaks fixed immediately to avoid mold. To locate an IICRC-Certified Firm, call (800) 835-4624, or visit CertifiedCleaners.org.

Sunroom basics

A

garden can brighten your mood and be a perfect place to relax. Gardens need not be reserved strictly for the outdoors. Creating a sunroom garden can bring the beauty of the landscape inside your home. Sunrooms, solariums, all-season rooms, or Florida rooms as they are sometimes called are popular spaces in many homes. They enable the homeowner to bring a touch of the outdoors inside, even when Mother Nature does not cooperate. Sunrooms can serve as a transition between the yard and home or simply be a tranquil place at home in which to retreat. Outfitting your sunroom with plant life is much like planning your garden or potted plants around the house. There are a few steps you should take. 1. Measure the area—You

want to have a balance between plants and furniture without overwhelming the space. Don’t fill the entire room, otherwise, it can seem cluttered and confusing. 2. DeterMine sun concentration—Depending on where your sunroom is located, you will have to address sunlight. Sunrooms facing south or west will get a lot of strong light during the day. Rooms facing east will get subtle

Helpful Home Hints

A

morning light, while those facing north won’t have nearly as much light. Once you determine how much light your room receives, you can choose plants that will thrive there. 3. choose your colors— Sunrooms will be enhanced mostly by the colors of foliage and flowers. Thus, keep the walls and other decor neutral in nature so that you won’t have clashing patterns. Many people choose to use wicker furniture in sunrooms, but you can put a comfy armchair or a durable sofa in there as well. A tabletop water fountain can add the effect of a babbling brook. Decorative pillows and blankets can make the room seem lived in as opposed to being a glorified porch. 4. choose containers— Remember, most of your plants will be potted plants, and thus you should allow for ample growth by choosing containers that are larger than your plant; ones the plants can grow into. Choose the same material in pots or go with a similar color palette. Container plants will need to be watered more frequently than plants growing right in the ground. Specimens that receive a lot of sunlight may need even more water. Use the finger test in soil to determine when plants need to be watered.

Choosing the correct potted plants is an important part of creating a sunroom that’s sure to help homeowners relax and relieve stress. 5 . u s e w i n D o w t r e atMents—A sunroom doesn’t have to be exposed all of the time. Sheer window treatments, shades, or blinds that can be pulled closed allow you to create privacy when you desire it. Feel free to sit in your sunroom even when the sun sets. A vented gas stove can be lit on chilly nights if you prefer to use the sunroom year-round. 6. Purchase no-fuss

Plants—Many varieties of plants are perfect for individuals who simply do not have the greenest of thumbs. If you need some inspiration and help getting your indoor garden to grow, consider these plants. * Cast Iron Plant (Aspidistra elatior) * Christmas Cactus (Zygocactus) * Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderian) * Snake Plant (Sansevieria) * Pothos (Epipremnum) * Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) ■ METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION

Get in the Zone You may be better able to win the race for (storage) space within your closet if you heed a few hints. Although everyone’s closet storage dilemmas vary, a systematic method of organizing your stuff can lead to the highest level of efficiency. Besides, when your closet is clutter-free, your mornings can run more smoothly, giving you the right mindset to tackle your day. • As you begin to sort through the contents of your closet, remember the 80/20 rule: You wear 20% of your

clothes 80% of the time. The rest just takes up valuable, reachable space. • Arrange your collection by category, grouping shirts, pants, suits, dresses, and so on. Depending on the nature of your wardrobe, you can also separate casual clothes from those you wear to work or on special occasions. • Add a center tower of shelving on each wall for frequently used items. It creates a place for folded things such as T-shirts, sweaters, and denim.

• Pants, shirts, and dresses can be kept on hanging rods, making them easier to access. • Upper storage shelving (above the highest hanging rod) can be designated for seasonal clothes you use less often as well as pieces you rarely use at all. • Personal and activity items such as your everyday watch, wedding ring, wallet, keys, and phone can stay within arm’s reach on a waist-level shelf or drawer. • Shoes worn most often should be the easiest to reach. Keep special party shoes or rarely used running shoes on the floor or way up high. • When space in other areas of the home is tight, keep luggage and other items tucked away in your walk-in. These occasional items can be hidden away and pulled out when you need them. • Don’t underestimate the power of closet accessories. Closet organizers, which can be found easily on-line, can be outfitted with drawers, doors, cubbies, jewelry trays, and pullout rods, putting every last inch of space to work. ■ NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE

Even those with a green thumb might not remember the differences between types of trees. For those who need a cheat sheet, the following is a breakdown of some of the more common types of trees you might have around your property. • Dogwood—Dogwoods boast colorful autumn leaves, making them a favorite of those looking to trees to add aesthetic appeal to their property. • Maple—Maple trees are very common throughout the milder regions of the northern hemisphere. Leaves are similar to those depicted on the Canadian flag, and these deciduous trees are most commonly grown as medium to large trees. • Willow—Willows are most common in moist areas, along floodplains or riverbanks. Willows grow rapidly and boast very simple flowers that lack petals. • Birch—Birch trees produce separate, abundant, tiny male and female flowers in dense clusters. Birch trees are generally most common in arctic regions in the northern hemisphere. • Ash—Characterized by small, greenish flowers, ash trees in North America have been subject to disease for several years, rarely living beyond 10 years as result. ■ METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION

A window of opportunity for energy savings

M

ost energy experts agree that in an average American home, windows are often a significant factor in home energy loss. Most people know from experience that windows also contribute to uncomfortable winter drafts, even if they are still in very good condition. This is because even windows that are relatively new and structurally sound may not be very

energy-efficient. Unfortunately, many homeowners think the only way to solve this problem is to buy expensive replacement windows. But there are better, more cost-effective options. A newly-released government study indicates that simply adding storm windows to existing windows can make them just as energy efficient as new, high-end replacement options — at a fraction of the cost.

Storm windows have been proven to reduce energy costs, and newer models can now be installed from the inside. That’s good news for homeowners. An average size storm window may cost $50-$70, whereas a replacement window of the same size could easily run $300-400, plus installation. Storm windows are easy to install, without the need to pull out windows and tear into walls. While storm windows have traditionally been installed on the outside of a house over existing windows, a new model has recently been developed that can be easily mounted from inside the home. According to June Eng of Larson Manufacturing, makers of the Insider (inside) storm windows, it’s simply a matter of a few small screws to put up a track on the inside of the window frame. Then the windows easily slide in and out each season.

The Insider is perfect for people who won’t or can’t install outside storm windows. “Some types of homes don’t work for outside storm windows,” says Eng. “Plus, these are perfect for people with "crank-out" windows and can be comfortably installed even when it’s freezing cold outside.” Like all storm windows, they help save energy, reduce drafts and, as an added bonus, make homes much quieter. So if your existing windows are not leaking, rotting away or warping, you might want to look at storm windows as an economical answer to rising energy costs. For more information on the government window study, visit stormwindowssavemoney.com. Both inside and outside storm windows

are available at most home improvement stores. ■ NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE

Math Insurance Service knows success

B

T

here’s a quiet revolution under way in homes across the country. From the kitchen to the nursery room and the bedroom to the bath, more and more families are questioning the presence of chemical products in their homes and taking decisive steps to replace them with healthier alternatives made from harmless ingredients. The shift comes in response to news that too many household cleaners, personal care items, cosmetics, and other consumer products contain potentially toxic ingredients that haven’t been tested for safety. Recent reports link common household chemicals like Bisphenol A and phthalates to cancer and other illnesses as well as chronic health problems such as asthma. “There’s no question, we’re in the midst of a sea change,” says renowned pediatrician and author Dr. Alan Greene. “People are starting to understand what’s in these products and how their family’s health is affected when, say, they breathe air filled with cleaning product vapors or absorb residues through their skin. At the same time, they’re realizing that just a few simple changes can make these problems disappear. And it’s often just a matter of making smarter choices when we shop.” That means opting for the many nontoxic alternatives available on supermarket shelves. Experts say that when safe and naturally effective alternatives are purchased, they protect more than just your home. They make a big difference in the health of the world around us. Products with biodegradable formulas don’t introduce hazardous contaminants into the environment when they’re used. Their ingredients don’t poison the water or pollute the air, which has a larger impact than most consumers realize. In Los Angeles, for example, common household products such as cleaners and cosmetics are the region’s No. 2 source of air pollution after automobile exhaust. “The benefits are so great in so many ways,” says Greene. “Once people realize how good natural products have gotten and see that using them doesn’t involve choosing between safety and effectiveness, they never go back. And that’s good news for everyone.”

Generators designed to weather a power outage Experiencing a power outage can be a real threat to a homeowner’s peace of mind. It’s estimated that 3.5 million Americans experience power outages each week. Over 70 million people have experienced an outage that lasted over 24 hours sometime in the last two years. According to the Edison Electric Institute,

the majority of these outages are weather-related. There are steps homeowners can take to protect their family and property from the damage and discomfort caused by a power outage. Portable generators are designed with user ease in mind that can be a short-term source of emergency power. For example, some models come in a variety of sizes with either a recoil starter or electric starter. Contained in a steel frame with wheels for easy relocation, these generators are powered by gasoline stored in a provided gas tank. Those looking for a more permanent alternative may consider a stand-by generator. This system is hardwired into the home’s electrical system and connected to the home’s natural gas or propane supply. In combination with an automatic transfer switch or generator-ready load center, the generator will func-

tion as a completely automatic system, without the homeowner having to be home to turn it on. When the utility power goes out, the generator-ready load center senses the loss of electrical power and turns on the generator. The generator then powers all of your emergency circuits. You can back up just a few rooms or a whole house. Once the utility power comes back on, the load center will automatically switch back to utility power. If you aren't home and your power is out, you wouldn't even know the difference. Stand-by generators don’t require much maintenance and can sit outside next to your air-conditioner units. Depending on the size of your house and how many rooms you wish to back up, a different size generator will be required. Most homeowners can justify the cost of a standby power system with just one extended power outage. Get a standby power solution for your home today. ■ NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS SYNDICATE

Specialty Outdoor Equipment and Welding “sells the best and services the rest” My name is Jim Davidson, owner of Specialty Outdoor Equipment and Welding. Many things have changed with my business over the years — different locations, different lines, different employees, even different product names — but one

This is our way of business. We want products we can feel confident to stand behind. We have weeded through many lines to get where we are and now have what we believe are the best lines of Outdoor Power Equipment available. Our store sells a wide variety of outdoor equipment lines including Stihl, Hustler, Little Wonder, Billy Goat, Bearcat, Snapper, Snapper Pro, Simplicity, Wright, Honda, and we have recently introduced the Scag line — a brand that is truly top of the line. Because we have such a variety of lines sold, we have become the “one stop shop” for all our customers. Not only that, but we provide the very best service possible for a practical price. People have a choice as to where they shop, and I know that if they are to become repeat customers, I will have to earn it. My staff and I are prepared to do just that. Helpful Home Hints

Merits of synthetic grass While synthetic grass has evolved over the years, the principle of providing a realistic and aesthetically appealing alternative to natural grass is still the same. Synthetic grass: • does not need to be watered or mowed, helping to conserve water and fuel — a synthetic lawn might help homeowners save more than 20,000 gallons of water per year • does not require the use of potentially harmful pesticides to maintain its aesthetic appeal • can last anywhere from 15 years to several decades, making it a potentially more attractive option than many homeowners might initially think

lons per month for a family of four, chances are good that you have a leak. Walk around your home with eyes and ears open to find leaks, and don’t forget to check pipes. Reveal a silent toilet leak by adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait 15 minutes without flushing. If bowl water changes color, your toilet has a leak. Flush afterwards to avoid staining the bowl or tank. 2. Fix Leaks—Many times, fixing leaks can be done yourself and doesn’t have to cost a thing. Both faucets and showerhead connections can be tightened or sealed. For leaky toilets, the rubber flapper inside the tank is often the culprit. Over time, the flapper decays, but replacing it only costs a few dollars. If you don’t feel comfortable with these repairs, a licensed contractor can help. 3. Save Water—Dripping faucets can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year, a showerhead leaking 10 drips per minute about 500 gallons per year, and running toilets 200 gallons or more each day. Fixing household leaks not only saves water, it saves energy and money on utility bills. If you need to replace plumbing fixtures, replace them with WaterSense-labeled models. Rock your world with river stones Looking to punch up the aesthetic value of your yard? Try adding an inviting stone patio, pathway, or border. Stone blends well with all architecture and landscape styles and is far more appealing to the eye than boring, bland concrete. Rocks and stones have been used in landscapes for centuries. They add timeless style and enduring beauty. The longevity of the paving stones on the island of Crete, in place for thousands of years, speaks volumes about stone’s durability in a landscape. Adding stone to a yard naturally enhances the beauty of the landscape and brings balance between organic and inorganic materials. Creating a stone path once required a large amount of time and sweat. Today stone landscapes can be created quickly and easily with a product like Easy Gardener River Stones. These natural stone forms are made with Indonesian river stones. Stones are permanently attached to

strong net and rubber backings with eco-friendly adhesives. The forms retain their shape and can be used to make stone pathways, patio surfaces, flowerbed borders, and accents. Square tiles, rectangular mats, and long, narrow borders are available in five colors — blush, onyx, pearl, slate, and sunset. Check them out at your local lawn and garden retailer or visit easygardener.com. The thought of adding a new stone walkway or patio can be overwhelming. It can be tough to visualize what it will look like when finished. Achieving the final look before permanent installation is simple with River Stones. Place tiles, mats, and/or borders on top of the ground in the planned patio or path area. If the configuration falls short of the envisioned addition, move the tiles, mats, and borders around until the look is picture perfect. When the desired look is attained, grass can be removed and the River Stones placed in position.

If the stone needs to be moved in coming years, relocate by lifting and moving to a new site. Small splashes of stone can make a big statement when accenting existing structures. Use individual tiles and mats as doormats or planter holders. Multiple mats can be positioned as a runner down the center of a rustic outdoor table. A stone walking strip between a pool and existing concrete patio creates a natural, elemental transition between the areas. Applications are not limited to outdoor landscapes. Stone can be used for indoor decor too. The River Stone tiles can be applied to indoor areas with the same techniques that are used in ceramic tile installation. Want a stone floor in your shower? Or a stone backsplash over your kitchen sink? Virtually anything is possible! Stone tiles add the timeless beauty and durability of stone to indoor decor and outdoor spaces. ■ METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION
