Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established as the Gulf Stream Hospital Association in 1947 to support Bethesda Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1959 and has grown to be Palm Beach County’s most comprehensive hospital. Its purpose is to assist the Hospital in accomplishing its mission through the acquisition, management and disbursement of philanthropic assets and by building support of the Hospital within the community. The Foundation is raising funds through its “Caring for Our Community Campaign” to maintain and enhance Centers of Excellence including the Bethesda Heart Hospital, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Cornell Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, Driskill Endovascular Center, Center for Women & Children, Orthopaedic Institute, Center for Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery and the creation of Palm Beach County’s newest hospital, Bethesda West, set to open in 2013.

The Bethesda Hospital Foundation is proud to recognize gifts received from October 2010 through September 2011 in this publication. Profiled below are Donor Recognition Society Levels. Gifts may have been given outright, as those provided through our Annual Fund and Special Events. Gifts for Capital, Endowment and Restricted funds may be given outright or through a pledge of up to five years. Gifts are recognized in the year they are given/and or pledged.
There are two listings in this publication. The first list recognizes annual gifts and pledges of $100 or more made in the fiscal year, which ended September 30, 2011. Centers of Excellence The Bethesda Hospital Foundation was established originally as the Gulf Stream Hospital Association in 1947 to support Bethesda Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1959 and has grown to be Palm Beach County’s most comprehensive hospital. As the flagship of Bethesda Healthcare System, Bethesda Memorial Hospital is a 401bed, fully accredited, community, not-for-profit hospital offering a full array of healthcare services including 24-hour emergency services, cardiovascular services, maternity and pediatric services, general and specialized surgery, orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitation, radiology, and comprehensive cancer services. Since opening in 1959, Bethesda has served the community with a mission to provide quality health services in a caring manner. Bethesda has a medical staff of more than 600 doctors and 2,386 employees at the Hospital.

Nationally ranked for its high-quality outcomes by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the world’s most foremost authority on measuring heart outcomes, Bethesda has exceeded the national average in the area of 30-day readmission rates for heart failure, placing Bethesda among the top 117 hospitals in the nation and among the top 9 hospitals in Florida for achieving this quality standard in heart care for our patients. We completed 457 open heart procedures, including 236 open heart surgeries and performed 1,430 cardiac catheterizations, of which 489 received an intervention.

Bethesda Women’s Health Center
Designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, Bethesda provides women’s diagnostic services including digital mammography, breast MRI, osteoporosis screening and wellness education. Bethesda continues to help women be proactive with their breast health, providing 13,373 screening mammograms and 7,777 diagnostic mammograms in the last year. As a participant with the Susan G. Komen Foundation to help medically needy women, we received grants totaling more than $300,000 to help women with their breast care.

Located at Bethesda Memorial Hospital, this 39-bed, all private room “heart hospital within a hospital” provides comprehensive cardiovascular services to our community. Led by a team of world-class cardiothoracic surgeons, the experienced medical professionals of the Heart Hospital are dedicated solely to cardiovascular care, working together in

Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute and Accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, the Bethesda Comprehensive Cancer Center has been providing patients with innovative treatments, state-of-the-art technology, education and support since 1985. A highly experienced team of specialized physicians and medical professionals assist patients and their families from diagnosis through rehabilitation.
As one of the areas most experienced maternity centers, Bethesda helped to bring 2,800 babies into the world in the last year. Bethesda offers specialized care to families in our community with services that include specialized prenatal care, an Obstetrical Triage Unit, prenatal education classes, certified lactation consultants and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which in the last year provided care to more than 355 critically ill and premature newborns. In addition, the Bethesda Children’s Center offers comprehensive care for children including a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department.

Centers of Excellence Bethesda Orthopaedic Institute As a complement to our Cornell Institute and Outpatient Rehabilitation programs, the Orthopaedic Institute celebrated its first anniversary this past July. This 24bed, all private-room unit is located on the 4th floor of the hospital and provides a state-of-the-art facility for patients requiring back, hip, knee, hand, shoulder, foot or ankle surgery. The Orthopaedic Institute offers a specialty trained orthopaedic nursing and rehabilitation staff, a state-of-the-artrehabilitation gym and a private dining room for patients. In conjunction with our inpatient, outpatient and sports medicine programs, this world-class comprehensive Institute provides high quality care to help our community members regain their quality of life.
24-Hour Emergency Department and 24-Hour Pediatric Emergency Department Staffed by Board Certified Emergency Physicians, Bethesda reached a new record in caring for 60,000 patients in the Emergency Room during the last year while still beating national benchmarks in emergency care, seeing patients in less than 30 minutes with a team of healthcare professionals treating every emergency quickly, accurately and with compassion.
The Battjes Vascular Institute Accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL), the Institute uses a multidisciplinary approach for comprehensive, quality care for patients with vascular disease.
Bethesda Centers for Advanced Imaging Providing the latest in all digital imaging technology, Bethesda services include: MRI, PET/CT, CT, Cardiac CT and X-ray, Bethesda provided 7,200 MRI procedures at the Hospital and 1,460 at Bethesda Health City while performing 959 PET/CT procedures and 27,100 CAT-scan procedures in the last year.

Centers of Excellence Outpatient Rehabilitation
Sleep Diagnostics Lab Bethesda provides diagnostic sleep studies that help diagnose sleep disorders in adults and children five years and older. Our sleep diagnostics lab received a renovation this year and offers new and beautiful sleep study rooms, making it easier for patients to slumber. Bethesda performed sleep studies in the last year for nearly 700 adults and 200 children.
Stroke Center
Bethesda offers four convenient locations for outpatient rehabilitation, staffed by licensed professionals, offering therapy programs in aquatic therapy, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, the Center for Pediatric Development, occupational and physical therapy, speech, audiology and incontinence. Bethesda’s outpatient rehabilitation programs continue to exceed national standards. In fact, our patients make bigger gains in our clinics than if they had gone elsewhere, as reported by Focus On Therapeutic Outcomes, Inc., (FOTO), which compares our patients to 144,000 patients in outpatient clinics around the country.
The Bethesda Stroke Center is dedicated to helping patients and their families better understand strokes, advancements in treatment and the steps that can be taken to prevent stroke. As a Joint Commission designated Advanced Certified Stroke Center, Bethesda is prepared to care for stroke patients 24-hours-a-day, 365 days a year. Our team of dedicated healthcare professionals works to ensure that our patients receive the most comprehensive level of stroke care and rehabilitation. The Bethesda Stroke Center is also proud to be recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s as a recipient of the Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award using evidence-based guidelines. This prestigious award recognizes Bethesda’s commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients. Together, with the Cornell Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, the Bethesda Stroke Center provides a comprehensive range of treatment options to help patients achieve their full potential.
Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Program Offers a progressive approach to traditional wound healing including hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Every patient is evaluated and an individualized treatment plan is developed just for you. Wounds that do not heal can keep you from the activities you enjoy. A wound that is slow to heal is almost always a symptom of an underlying health problem. We seek out the cause of your wound and work with you on approaches and treatment plans to fix this underlying problem. While healing the wound is very important, we are just as committed to eliminating its cause. In this way, we can help you avoid future wounds.

Centers of Excellence Center for Surgical Weight Reduction Since 2004, the Bethesda Center for Surgical Weight Reduction has been changing lives. When other medically supervised methods have failed, surgery offers the best option of long-term weight control for those with clinically severe obesity. The Center offers Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass, the LAPBAND® System and Sleeve Gastrectomy surgical options, as well as pre- and post-surgical support to help patients live a healthier life.
Cornell Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine Our Cornell Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine has just completed its sixth year. This 28-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit provides comprehensive programs for orthopaedic and neurologic
rehabilitation. This year Bethesda saw more than 750 patients in this unit, with an average length of stay of 12.7 days. Thanks to the great teamwork of the Cornell medical staff, patients are able to return home quicker than in other inpatient rehab hospitals. Our community can be proud because the Cornell institute has a consistent return home rate of 83 percent, compared to the national average of 74 percent.

Through one-on-one mentoring, Bethesda’s Care Coach works with every healthcare provider who provides direct patient care. In the Center’s sixth year, Bethesda certified 182 more graduates in the additional training in the last year.

Opening in early 2013, Palm Beach County’s newest Hospital will be an allnew, 80-bed, all-private room hospital that will provide 24-hour emergency services, general medical and surgical

Bethesda is one of only 19 other hospitals in the country to provide cardiothoracic surgery using robotic technology. Bethesda Memorial Hospital also became the FIRST hospital in Florida to provide its surgeons with a da Vinci Skills Simulator, enabling them to master the highest level of skills needed for robotic surgery. Simulation in all forms is becoming an important part of the learning experience for surgical technology. By providing a controlled re-creation of critical steps in instrument control, simulation allows surgeons to practice their skills in a non-clinical environment.

Eloise Kimmelman Foundation Eloise and David Kimmelman were supporters of healthcare in our community during their lifetime. Married for 48 years until Mrs. Kimmelman passed away in 1997, Mr. Kimmelman was a patient at Bethesda during the last decade until he passed away in 2005.
Bethesda West Hospital and Bethesda Memorial Hospital will have one medical staff. In addition, Bethesda West Hospital expects to have 300 full-time employees and volunteers.
The Foundation would like to recognize the Eloise Kimmelman Foundation's generous pledge in the last fiscal year to create the Eloise Kimmelman Center for Interventional Caridiovascular Treatment and Research at the new Bethesda West Hospital. The Foundation remains grateful for the Kimmelman’s continued support including previous support of services in the Bethesda Heart Hospital.
Philanthropist Society Mrs. Thomas A. Murphy
Mrs. Thomas A. Murphy, and her late husband, have given their support to Bethesda for more than 30 years through various ways including planned gifts, special events and most recently to help with the Benefactors Pavilion Unit renovation.
Bethesda created the Benefactors Pavilion, a private VIP wing that combines world-class medical care with the comforts of home and five-star hotel amenities, 10 years ago. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Benefactors Pavilion, Mrs. Murphy stepped forward to help with the renovation of this very special unit. We are pleased and proud that Mrs. Murphy saw the Benefactors Pavilion as a worthy recipient of her philanthropy. The Foundation recognizes Mrs. Murphy for her continued kindness to Bethesda.

The 11th Annual Women of Grace Luncheon was held in November 2010 at The Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach to honor women in our community who are making a difference through volunteering with charities in our area. The event benefited advancements including lifesaving technology for Bethesda’s Center for Women & Children, which includes a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Wells Fargo again served as the Title Sponsor and the Magnolia Society continued support as a Platinum Sponsor. The 27th Annual Quail Ridge Golf & Country Club Day of Golf was held in January 2011 to benefit Bethesda’s Center for Radiation Oncology and the Bethesda Heart Hospital. Over the years, this event has raised more than $3 million to support Bethesda.

The 56th Annual Bethesda Ball celebrated An Evening at the Oscars with dinner, dancing and an auction at The Breakers in March 2011. Jan Kucera served as Ball Chairman and Foundation Board of Director Vice Chairman Peter Blum was recognized as Honorary Chairman. Lady Sheila Germain served as the Title Sponsor of this spirited evening, which benefited Bethesda’s Centers of Excellence.
The Foundation hosted a Women’s Wellness Symposium and Luncheon at Aberdeen Country Club in April 2011. Guests attended a wellness expo and gathered to hear presentations from Bethesda’s physicians.

Bethesda Next The Foundation’s “Bethesda Next” young professionals group presented “Lite Bites and Summer Nights” at the Hospital in the summer of 2010, a fall social at Tryst in Delray Beach and a Mini-Masters Golf Tournament at Putt’n Around in Delray Beach in February 2011 to raise awareness and support for Bethesda. Since its inception in the spring of 2010, the Bethesda Next group has raised more than $5,000 for the Foundation’s efforts to support the Hospital.
