DRAFT VIEW OF SCHEME

NEW WEMBLEY MASTERPLAN LONDON

Client: Quintain Estates & Development Plc

New Wembley is the project driving the regeneration of 55 acres of land surrounding the Wembley Stadium in north west London. Working alongsideRichardRogersPartnershipforQuintainEstates&Development, RSA has formed the landscape strategy for the public realm and all external space across this site. The strategy aims to create a new cultural destination for north west London, a vibrant new quarter and a setting for the National Stadium. The landscape strategy, establishes a hierarchy of external spaces: the streets, squares, gardens, parks, courtyardsandfootpathsthatmakeupthe public and private realm. The strategy seeks to achieve a choreographed experience. Arrival at a key area such as the Stadium or Arena should be a memorable culmination of a sequence of experiences. Routes across the site read as a clear axis, linkingtheprinciplepublicspaces, formingapedestriandominatedroute through the site.

ARENA SQUARE WEMBLEY, LONDON

Client: Quintain Estates & Development Plc

At the heart of the vision for Wembley lies the new elegant city square for Wembley Arena and London. This is intended as a new cultural destination, a ‘South Bank in NorthLondon.’Thesquareprovidesadramaticsettingforseasonal and cultural events, Arena warm-up shows and celebrations, as well as a permanent ‘people watching’ space in continuous use by people living, working and enjoying themselves. RSA worked with architects Richard Rogers, engineers Buro Happold and special features designers Pyott Nicron to create a design focused around a central interactive fountain. High quality materials are used throughout and combined with elegant detailing. Special effects are focused on the theatrical lighting of the Arena facade coordinated with the fountain, lighting columns and audio effects. Banks of steps define the square and form an informal amphitheatre. A temporary stage can be placed over the central fountain for special events. Central to the vision for Arena Square is thatofflexibility, therebyallowingforarangeofdifferentfunctionswithinthe square as the surrounding infrastructure develops.

LANGHAM HOTEL LONDON

Client: Langham Hotel The Langham Hotel was opened in 1865 as Europe’s first Grand Hotel and has hosted royalty, foreign dignitaries and celebrities in luxury for over 140 years. ThisVictorian landmark has been restored and expanded to incorporate 21st Century luxury and contemporary spaces over the years. RSA designed a green layer to the stone facade by importing mature trees from Italy and adding extensive planting. Recently RSA were appointed to create an English Rose wedding courtyard garden for the hotel. The brief was to provide a flexible space that could accommodate a central wedding marquee or alternatively be laid out as a cigar terrace. The bland open courtyard has been replaced with a series of intimate spaces which have been created by moveable planters and benches.Tall decorative metal obelisks and standard bay trees create an evergreen structure with year round interest. Roses and seasonal underplanting offer considerable colour, fragrance and charm.

Ian Simpson Architects

Client: Londonewcastle

Dollar Bay is situated at the east of the West India and Millwall Dock in London. The architectural master plan for Dollar Bay creates a slender urban marker in the form of a tower which is composed of two angled forms. In response to the architectural masterplan and the context of the development, the landscape proposals aims to enhance the public realm and provide improved views across the site and beyond. Proposals are for creating a visually stimulating, practical and usable space for residents and children including aspects of integrated play, seating, bike stands and outdoor cafe space. A private garden rich in planting is proposed to provide space for passive recreation and promote biodiversity. The waterfront promenade housing the cafe at the tower base and a planted edge provides an opportunity to enrich and animate the quayside.

RSA were commissioned in March 2010 by Nativeland and Grosvenor Estates together with John McAslan Partnership as consultants to provide landscape and urban realm services for the prestigious Campden Hill residential project overlooking Holland Park. The design seeks to achieve an elegant, calm, balanced and a well proportioned composition, which responds well to the site context. The strategy is to create a formal landscape at the centre of the site which responds to the requirements of residents for visual and functional amenity. Towards the edges the site becomes a more informal woodland by extending the qualities from Holland Park. The courtyard at the heart of the site is ordered, formal and symmetrical with an elegant reflecting pool. All ground floor apartments face out onto private courtyard gardens. KING’S CHELSEA CHELSEA, LONDON Client: King’s Road Ltd

The development of the former King’s College site bounded by the Fulham and King’s roads has given RSA the opportunity to design a series of highly decorative courtyard spaces and a substantial urban park with private and public spaces. The size and location of the site and the presence of listed buildings make the development an important and sensitive issue for the residents of the surrounding area and the local planning authority (Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea). Careful application of design skills in the treatment of the listed buildings was vital to deal with all the local issues. Thedevelopmentrequiredincorporationofpublicaccessandthelandscape proposals were developed to comply with this requirement while also maximising the opportunities for the enjoyment of the open spaces for the residents , and also preserving the setting of the historic buildings. GREENWICH MILLENNIUM VILLAGE PHASE 1B LONDON

Client: GMVL

Greenwich Millennium Village is one of five projects chosen for a gold Building for Life Standard award that recognises design excellence and is sponsored by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE). The main public space, while being a means of access and a place to sit and play for the occupants, is also a rich, verdant space to benefit the flats above. The area is shaped by an undulating lawn and an arc of self bound gravel and wood deck, punctuated with decorative stone.

COMMUNAL FOCUS FOR RESIDENTS

GREENWICH MILLENNIUM VILLAGE LONDON LONDON Client: GMVL

The concept has taken the most successful elements of the design created by Desvigne and Dalnoky within the Central and Southern Park, the axial hard landscape, structured native planting, grid woodland planting and a hierarchy of street furniture.

RSA were invited to develop a landscape masterplan for an existing under used open space on Chatham Waterfront.  Key factors for the masterplan were the redevelopment of the waterfront to establish a mixed use development to include residential, commercial, retail with the incorporation of a new a feature building, a Theatre.  The area also had to incorporate a new transport hub which would coordinate buses as well as reorganising cycle and pedestrian connections from the riverfront to the town centre.   The concept developed by RSA established five integrated areas for the masterplan which would establish a series and variety of destination within the Park which would regenerate the character and spaces of the park as well as maintain the connection with the water.  Also incorporated into the design were the key landscape features of the existing site.  These landscape features incorporated historically significant landscape elements to the site which included a scheduled ancient monument.

GREAT COVERT PARK HAMPSHIRE

Client: 8CU

The residential-lead mixed use development of Great Covert Park provides some unique opportunities. The design will provide 1,050 new homes developed around the concept of a Hampshire village. The landscape design follows the village concept by developing the built form of the site around a focal open space of a village green, which links directly with a village square bound by offices, shops and a pub. The design also includes extensive facilities for use by residents and the existing local community including a health centre, primary school and nursery, horse riding school, play areas, sports pitches, allotments, public gardens, a leisure centre and an indoor swimming pool. All of these new facilities will be connected by a network of cycle ways and footpaths, which will be integrated within the whole development area. The sustainability of any new development is of paramount importance and Great Covert Park provides the opportunity to take a new and fresh look at how best a new housing development can be planned and executed. The development is established in a woodland setting, the concept of developing a new village also takes into consideration the latest Government advice with respect to an Urban Extension.
