AREA HISTORY

Before European settlement, the area around Pine was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Shoshone and Bannock. European Americans began exploring and settling the Pine area in the mid-19th century as pioneers ventured westward in search of new opportunities. The discovery of gold in nearby areas, such as the Boise Basin, attracted prospectors and miners to the region.

The late 19th century saw a mining boom in the Pine area, with the discovery of gold, silver, and other valuable minerals. Prospectors flocked to the area in search of riches, leading to the establishment of mining camps and towns, including Pine.

The Pine area’s rich forests also played a significant role in its history, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries when the timber industry became a major economic driver. Logging operations flourished, and the area’s abundant timber resources were harvested for lumber and other products.

Alongside mining and logging, ranching and agriculture were essential to the local economy. The fertile valleys surrounding Pine supported ranching activities, while farming operations cultivated crops such as hay and potatoes.
